I visited Middlehills last weekend for what was my first camping experience. I took my two boys ages 2 and 3 for what was definitely their first experience, I went with 4 friends (one a seasoned camper).
I read the reviews prior and wasn't convinced but I gave it a go anyway, and I am glad I did. We stayed in the largest field furthest away from the farm buildings (still only a 1 min walk to plat area/ wash rooms etc and had plenty of room, this was a warm July weekend and it did not feel crowded.
The boys hared around the large grass areas and made me visit the really good play area at least 6 times during our 24 hour stay. The owners were great, let me blow up my airbed in their log cabin as my in-car adapter wouldn't work.
Toilets were ok, (I wasn't expecting Savoy standard anyhow. Washing up sinks did run out of hot water but then again I was using them at 8pm on a Saturday (peak time I would think).
After the kids were asleep we stoked up the fire (in our own fire pit) and sank a few beers until 1am, we weren't too noisy and neither was anybody else, the odd shriek of laughter from fellow campers and the ambience of real fires everywhere was great. Not sure if it is all campsites but this one attracts people who launch hundreds of chinese lanterns - really nice to see.
My two boys thought it was fantastic and want to go back ASAP, as they are both under 4 it only cost me £6 so at those prices I might just take them back! And the brownie points from the wife (who will never go camping) are invaluable.
Ps. Farm animals are a great attraction for small kids, not much to do near by and the pub down the road looked a bit ropey from the outside.

We enjoyed our 2 night stay with 2 kids but did breathe a sigh of relief when the rain caused some noisy kids to go back to their tents.
I was surprised that such young children were causing a nuisance after 10pm but waited until the 11pm curfew before I started yelling back as noisy kids passed the tent where my 5 year old had been in bed some time. We will return but plan to camp further from the kids play equipment next time.
We didn't use the showers, the toilet block seemed fine, and 'the stall' selling camping essentials and bric a brac was very good value.

Very friendly and helpful with organising our booking so we could put the tent up next to the caravan for the kids.
Loved the laid back feel of the site and the boys (14, 12) thought the play areas were great. The quarry noise is noticeable but it stopped at night.
The prices were excellent value for money, the facilities are a little basic but that said they are perfectly serviceable.
We would and will go back.
The only criticism we would make is that the toilet block could do with being updated to the same standard as the showers.
There is plenty to do in the local area and at low cost too.

We arrived on site to a very friendly welcome by the owners. There are 3 fields, and one for EHU. We hooked up which was a smaller field, busy and a bit crowded as the kids were off school. The field was gently sloping so we had to ensure the tent was aligned so we didn't slide off the bed.
The toilets are in a portable cabin at a separate location from the showers. They were fairly clean even though they were basic.
Showers (x 3 in each) were hot but the pressure was poor. There is a fridge-freezer in reception for milk etc for those non EHU which was a nice touch.
However,as we settled down at night the quarry (less than a mile away which you can see from the EHU field) exploded into the night-shift. Lots of grinding, crushed-rock noises with added HGV rumbling for effect.
Matlock Bath was nice to visit and the cable car up to Heights of Abraham was great, although £37.50 for a family of 4 was pricey. They did allow dogs up there.
No shop anywhere near for essentials, so pack them before you go. Or prepare for a drive to Sainsburys at the other side of Matlock. They do sell eggs at the site but had sold out when we asked.
The kids loved the play area as it was extensively equipped.
I wouldn't return to this site as it's a little far for us to travel and too remote from any shops etc.

We visited in June 2011 - campsite was good and tidy - nice and quiet
The pot washing station was good and the staff were nice and friendly.
The children's playground was basic but good, we
Walked for a few miles and didn't really find much except one pub that didn't except cards and didn't do food, so a bit disappointing on that side.
There is a horse and stabble at bottom of hill, very good and our son loved stroking the horse and feeding him grass
Is on a fast road so be very careful with younger ones as you're walking on a 60mph road. !
A little too quiet for us but good for walkers

I really wanted to like this site when we pulled up to a beautiful location with a really welcoming, helpful and friendly lady on reception. Very reasonable rates and the site seemed fairly level and first impressions of the toilet block were good - basic but clean.
However, there were just a few too many niggles that would prevent me from going back again. I know it was a bank holiday weekend, but the site just got busier and busier, resulting in frequent queues for the facilities. The showers were only open until 9pm, and although hot were pretty feeble.
Our kids loved the play area, but the adults were really worried by the huge unfenced drops off the walk ways and everyone was disturbed by the extremely loud teenagers hanging round the play area until very late at night.
Some lovely walks from the site, and Gullivers Kingdom is a nearby fun day out.

Just back from a brilliant 3 night stay at Middle Hills.
2 camping fields with lovely size pitches as not regimented. 1 field for EHU's
Farm animals, Brilliant play park, Campfires-what more could we have asked for!
Fingers crossed going back this weekend too.
Loads to do in the surrounding area.
Quarry was active but it did not hinder our break away at all.
£1 for 5 mins in the shower, basic but well kept toilet facilities, no shop but just means you have to be organised!
Brilliant.

Just returned from two nights at this site. Beautiful location with lots going for it. Pros and cons as follows:
Site is located close to a working quarry which although not busy all the time, was active all night during our first night. Not a horrendous noise but noticeable background hum. Blasting during the day, however not something that would spoil the trip.
The toilets are fairly basic portacabin type although cleaned regularly.
There are no shops nearby - not even a farm shop - so no quick nip out for a loaf, although the site do sell free range eggs.
Our pitch was invaded by a large family group which pitched tents and parked cars all over the place.
Showers are £1 for 5 minutes which would be reasonable if power showers etc but a bit lacking.
Lovely, welcoming owners.
Fire pits are provided so that you can have a proper campfire which is excellent and a reason in itself to go there!
There are a few animals and a great playground so fab for families.
Reasonable rate per night etc for facilities.

Overall a nice campsite. Very relaxed feel - pitches not regimented. Lovely views and in a good location for visiting around Matlock, Bakewell etc. 2 large camping fields and a smaller one for EHU which did look more cramped. Toilets were basic but always clean even though it was busy. Could do with more sinks in the ladies - got very busy when people wanted to brush their teeth! It was quite lively with several groups camping together, but they were strictly told to quieten down at 11pm all went quiet then so no problem. Kids enjoyed the play area and meeting the horses. Only downsides - no shop easy to get to, so need to make sure you have the basics - we ran out of milk. Plus no hot water for washing up all weekend. I am presuming this is because it is so busy for the bank holiday? Pot washing was also outside so wouldn't be very pleasant in poor weather. Some of the field is slightly sloping, although there seemed plenty of flat areas. All in all, good value and we preferred it to other more expensive sites we have been to in the Peaks. We would go again.

We stayed on this site over the Easter holidays and found it to be a very friendly campsite staff very helpful toilets and showers very clean and well kept. This is down to wonderful Barbara who does the job exceptionally well. The park is very nice for the younger 1s the pigs and chickens were a delight too. Although this campsite is very good we felt it could do with a little shop. We did wander to the pub down the road but was told they were only doing meals for the residents of their cottages which was disappointing as we were looking forward to a nice Sunday lunch. All in all I would recommend this site to friends and family.
