Great site for families and children. Our two children spent hours on the play equipment and made a few new friends. The shop was well stocked and competitively priced. We were there for part of the queens jubilee weekend and the site was busy but we still had plenty of space. The other site users were generally mindful of families with younger children.
The facilities were well maintained and very clean. Plenty of toilets and reasonable pot washing areas. Didn't use the showers so can't comment except to say they were on the caravan part of the site and a long way from the 2 main camping fields.
Unfortunately for the site owners/ operators this site is about 200m from a quarry and about 600m from a stone processing facility (situated to the south). The noise was not noticeable on Bank Holiday Monday but it woke me up at 6am this morning (the wind was coming from that direction).

We stayed at Middlehills farm from the 25th to 27th May 2012. We arrived late afternoon and went to the reception. I was greeted by the friendly proprietor who directed me to our pitch, which was an electric hook up. We were on pitch 2 in the smaller field as you enter the site.
The site has 3 fields, 2 of which are large and give plenty of room for tents and caravans. There was a small shop near to the toilets/washing up area. The shop stocked some basic items in case you run out or forget (like I did).
The goats, chickens and pigs were nice to see, the chickens roamed around the site, whilst the other animals were in a pen near to the playground.
The playground was great for our 8 year old Son, he loved it. We had a BBQ on the first night, I saw people hiring fire pits and gas BBQ`s. All in all a good site.
The showers and toilets were always clean and tidy. The showers cost £1 for 5 mins which was just enough for a quick shower. This meant that there wasn`t a queue for showers when I went.
Nearby there isn`t a lot, but you are ideally placed to travel the area. There is the Holly Bush Inn for a drink and pub food which is just down the road. We went into Matlock Bath and went to the Heights of Abraham, which we all enjoyed. We will be returning soon.
A good site to go to.

We have visited this site a number of times in the last couple of years and found that it is always clean and well presented. The shower block is excellent and clean, and is currently building a new toilet and shower block that should be ready for June 2012.
They have a new shop for 2012 which supply the basic essentials for a camping breakfast.
The site is well placed for local attractions such as Matlock bath, Buxton and Carsington water.
The owners are extremely helpful and friendly.
I would advise any wanting to explore the peak district to use this site as a base.

We have just returned from a 3 night stay here, we booked very last minute as we were due to go to badminton horse trials that was cancelled!
We stayed on the field where the play area was - this was the best play area ever according to my 8 year old son. Nice big field for ball games etc, lovely views, owners were very cheerful.
Goats and cooni cooni pigs great too.
Ideal base for walking and tissington / high peak trails. Pub down the road, sainsburys 15 mins away.
My only complaint is that 3 ladies showers isn't really enough for such a big site and they were very slow, but hot!
Toilets clean and well kept, good shop in site, we would definitely stay here again. Great value for money.

Has come back from our short stay at matlock and stayed at middlehill farm
Cost - thought the pricing was fantastic very reasonable. Only £6. 00 PPPN.
Location - very east to find. But a bit far out from anything this has good points and bad the good point is that it is extremely quite at night. Bad point is that the nearest shop is about 4 miles down the road ( not to bad if you drive wouldn't like to walk it lol ) sainsburys is about 10 mins 15-20 mins in a car. As wea wear on motorbikes the road near by was fantastic. There is a pub 5 mins walk away. (very quiet we when in at 8pm on a Saturday and we was the only people in their. The owner was very nice had the fire on and with internet access.
Facilities - to be honest what more do you want? clean toilets and some wear to get water and have a wash they wear very clean.
The man we spoke to on the phone and hen we got their was very polite and very helpful.
Would definitely stay again.

This is a lovely popular site which we are planning to return to again next week.
There are separate shower and toilet blocks which were both kept very clean, even during a dirt bike racing weekend that was being held there, which was free entry for us and it was excellent fun and we are now hooked. This event did not impact on the weekend in any negative way, ie noise / disturbance etc, in fact it enhanced the stay for us.
There is a park for the children which is quite large and well maintained and is next to some of the farm animals which you are able to interact with.
There isn't much nearby apart from lots of green fields, a pub about 500 yards down the road, there is a quarry nearby which you can hear in the distance late at night if you are outside but this didn't interupt our sleep at all in the caravan.

Me and the missus stayed for a couple of nights and found it a really nice friendly site out in the sticks (don't follow your sat nav. Ours got us lost by taking us up the road before, missing the site entrance by about 200 yrds)
The facilities are clean and looked after.
The missus was glad for the heads up on the shower and making sure you are ready to jump in before putting your £1 (for 5 mins) in as it does start straight away.
The site has plenty of space to pitch the only down for us with the pitch was that the grass had just been cut and was getting where water couldn't.
We didn't take the kids with us but the playground looked fab for them and they would have loved the goats, pigs and chickens.
We choose to stay here as we wanted to have a campfire and you are allowed as long as you use a fire pit (we used our bbq) Other than that you have to get permission from the owners. Logs available locally at £2. 50 a bag, however we found the smoke from them too much to handle. The sainsburys in Matlock itself sells crackle logs for around £2 each which we found loads better.
We will be definitely visiting again.

This was our first trip in our caravan so we were all very excited. On arrival we checked in at the reception which was clearly marked and were greeted with a very warm welcome. They told us we could choose our pitch which was nice.
The price was reasonable and electric was cheap.
The site itself was perfect for us with a children's play area we didn't need to keep such a close eye on our son which allowed us to relax too.
The views are amazing and the local area is fab. Gullivers Kingdom is literally just down the road and the local sainsburys too is close.
We will definitely go back and recommend to our friends.

We've just come back from a 2 night visit to this site and am very impressed. The whole feel of the place is very laid back and friendly. Even though it was quite busy you never actually felt crowded.
Absolutely lovely to be able to have a campfire. It was first camping trip for one of our friends so a nice way to start off, toasting marshmallows on the fire.
We realised after the first evening that the portaloos in the top field are a no go zone after around 6 pm, but then it's only a short walk to the main loos which were very nice and clean. I would highly recommend this site and hope to be going back very soon. The owners and people that work on site are very warm and welcoming

I chose this site after reading the other reviews here on UKCS, when looking for a site for a cheap short break. To summarise, the plus points are:
Great location in the Peak district for lots of tourist activities to suit all tastes and budgets
Nice rural location
Warm welcome, relaxed vibe, few rules (just the essential ones for safety and mutual respect). No set pitch layouts, so friends can “group” together
Dogs allowed (on lead)
Nice adventure play area for kids (including what looked like a hobbit burrow!)
Lots of other space for kids to play games
Fires allowed ( off the ground)
Nice real ale pub the Holly Bush is a short stroll down the road
The bits that detract from the experience are:
Showers and loos are in two separate blocks, quite some distance away from each other
No disabled access facilities (not even a seat in the shower; one of our party had to take own camping chair in or showering would not have been safe)
Showers are coin operated (£1 for 5 mins) but the slot machine is outside the cubicle ( so you need a big towel to drape yourself in to do the coin manoeuvre and then leap into the cubicle to get your money’s worth) and water temp was a little variable
Little hot water in the pot washing areas ;we boiled the kettle to get greasy pots properly clean
With only 4 loos and 3 showers per gender there occasional queues at some peak times (given that we were there on a sunny weekend in the school hols, the site was very busy)
The cement works in the distance started up at various points and the sound was a bit intrusive unless you had other things to distract you (we had ipods, banjos, and silly rhyming games!)
So on balance I would say it was fine for our purposes and we would use the site again when we want a value-for-money break on a very relaxed site (£6 per person per night). However it is not top-notch and if any of the listed negatives are deal-breakers for you then maybe you need to think again. As you can see, we managed to work around the potential problems so we had a great and above all very chilled time here.
