We have returned from a 2 night stay on this lovely site. All the other positive reviews are spot on. I didn't mind the unisex facilities, there are plenty of reminders to leave them clean & tidy. Loved all the little touches such as the radio & bunting!
There was plenty of hot water & big spacious shower cubicles. Everywhere was clean & tidy.
Fantastic location. Great for Harrogate, Ripon, Knaresborough, York. Lovely owners who were great to communicate with via email when booking. They welcomed us on arrival & checked we were ok with the fire pit being lit that night as we were one of the closest pitches. We didn't object, but as the site had some really big family groups we decided not to join in.
I'm a bit of a stickler for rules & was pleased that the site had a 'no noise after 10. 30 rule'. I believe in camping etiquette, and respect for my fellow campers is a value I hold strongly. However, on our first night people were still talking loudly round the fire pit & playing music at 11pm. However, one text to the owners & they were on it straight away. Things quietened down significantly.
I will definitely recommend this site & will return. Just perhaps not on a bank holiday weekend & not during the school holidays.

Just home from a great weekend at this site
It was so lovely and peaceful.
Views was magnificent and the field we stayed in was clean spacious and well kept.
He children in our party loved it here lots of space to play and they loved the fire pit which was lit at night.
The owners was away themselves so the couple looking after the site showed us down to our pitch. They was very friendly and helpful
Our family party thoroughly enjoyed our stay as we were able to pitch our tents together and have a gazebo up between them.
The only downside to this site was the shared toilet and shower block. It was immaculately clean, decorated beautifully and even has GHDs. I just felt uncomfortable in a mixed block and as there was only 2 toilets and 2 showers we were at very close quarters with people doing the most private of things.
Please give us ladies a separate loo please and we would definitely return.

The site was lovely, set in the countryside, all the pitches had a view of the dales with large fire pit in the centre.
Toilet/shower block really clean and well stocked, unisex which was really great for our family, large showers. Loads of hot water. Good washing up facilities.
Close to variety of places to eat in Harrogate or there is 2 pubs in Killinghall.
Lovely places to go and visit including Ripley Castle and Brimham Rocks lots of leaflets on the site.
Owners really friendly and helpful.
We will be returning very soon!

The Cud Life August Bank Holiday Weekend 2013
A group of Friends with young children (10 adults 5 children)
This site offers good sized pitches, most with electric hook up. The camping area is fenced off, offering a safe environment for kiddies running around, and the site is fairly small, enough that children are generally always in sight. There is a lovely tree swing which our children loved!
The dishwashing, WC, showers and other facilities where excellent. The hairdryer, straighteners and radio made such a difference. We loved the unisex idea as it made family shower time very easy.
These facilities where very clean upon our arrival, and the general day to day maintenance of this seemed to be the responsibility of the campers which I haven't come across before, but worked reasonably well in the short term.
The owners were very kind to one family in our group after the first nights flash flood, kindly washing and tumble drying their sheets seemed no trouble at all, and we where very touched by their kindness.
Being a large family group on a small site it was difficult to enjoy our evenings due to the very strict 10. 30 no chatting rule. There where a small minority of guests that had gone off to bed, and at 11pm on the Saturday night, and there had been a complaint.
The firepit is an excellent idea to bring the entire campsite together, and it did! It was well stocked by one of the owners in the afternoon, and we lit the fire just after sunset at 9pm. Around 90% of the campers gathered and got acquainted, chatted exchanged stories, from children to adults it was enjoyed by all. However this socially orientated concept is not suitable for this campsite, as it is tempting for campers to break the 10. 30pm no chatting rule. So, unfortunately we where all sent back to our tents at 11pm by the owners with a rather large flea in our ear!
It was also briefly mentioned in a note that the noise in the daytime of children playing had been unacceptable.
Just as constructive criticism, maybe the owners may have politely steered our group away at the point of booking. With a suggestion of a more suitable site nearby. We spent £300 on our stay between the five tents, and this site was not suitable for us, we are a respectful and friendly, family orientated group. Unfortunately we were made to feel exactly the opposite by the owners and a very small minority of other guests. We where not the only guests feeling this way.
Maybe the site is more suited to couples only?
All said, this is, however, a truly lovely site, and you can't please everyone. But for the reasons mentioned we will not be returning or recommending. Such a shame :(

I can recommend this excellent site which is set in lovely countryside with great views and quiet yet very close Harrogate (near to bus route so no need to drive there), Skipton and the Dales.
Slightly sloping ground and no hard standing which could be problem if wet. Plenty of hookup and spacious pitches.
Extremely friendly and helpful owners.
Toilet block is very clean and modern with 2 toilets and 2 good sized showers, however, the block is unisex, shared by men and women and this won't suit everyone.
Village has pubs but no shop (or garage) so planned farm shop will be a bonus.

We have just returned from this campsite, on what was our first holiday with our caravan. We were not disappointed at all. This is a lovely small and friendly site, the owners are very friendly and welcoming, giving visitors a tour around the farm.
Although there is not a playground, our son made lots of friends, they all enjoyed playing together, then having toasted marshmallows and various other delights around the fire pit that was lit on the Sat night.
The toilet/shower block was spotlessly clean, the pitches were well spaced out.
We will definitely be returning to this site, but for longer than 1 night next time.

This was our first time out with our caravan so we chose somewhere fairly local. The site is in a good location, the field is fairly flat and the views are lovely.
The toilets and showers are huge but there are only two of each and they are unisex which I really, really don't like. Whilst we were there a group of 7 adults and 8 children arrived with just two tents, they only took up two pitches but as they all went to the washing up sinks and toilet block on masse no one else could get a look in for ages.
I have two issues with this site
1. The fire pit, we were looking forward to this being lit by the owners, it is a huge pit probably near 4' wide, on the Saturday they piled up loads of large logs next to it then went out for the evening, aforementioned group of people lit it and by 11 o clock it was about 3 feet above the top of the fire pit itself, it was breezy that night and the pit is not central it is near two pitches (of course I had to be staying on one of those), stray sparks were flying about and could easily have ignited a tent or awning or gas canister. Despite rain overnight it was still going at 5am.
My second issue is leaving the site with no one to contact in event of a problem and not checking with people when they are leaving if all was OK. Campsites do not run themselves

Management response: We are very upset to read on here that you were not happy on our campsite. I am sure you will understand we can't possibly know if people are not happy with other campers unless they tell us so that we can address and resolve any issues? We had limited space and funds for a toilet block, we thought it better to make them unisex as often gents toilets are empty when more than one lady may wish to use them and likewise with the showers. Families have been very happy that they are able to shower together and this saves on waiting time. We have a radio so that you can listen to music instead of other people, male or female! Regarding your issues with our Kadai (fire pit), David takes the wood on a Saturday afternoon/evening, he can't give a specific time to do this as it has to fit around farming but he tries his best to talk to everyone to ensure they are happy and we find that guests usually work together to decide who will light it at what time and if they would like a simple fire or to toast marshmallows or even barbeque on it - it is never to be used as a dangerous fire. The wood is properly dried and untreated so as not to spit to ensure clean burning. If you were not happy with the amount of wood, we are confused as to why you didn't talk to the other campers about it at the time? There are fire buckets and extinguisher and plenty of water if you wished to put it out, both of our mobile numbers are on the confirmation letter that we ask you to bring with you, David's number is also clearly written on the campsite reception sign which is displayed at all times. In addition to this David's father, is always onsite so we never leave the site unattended or leave no contact? We completely agree with your comment that campsites don't run themselves as we both work VERY hard 7 days a week with phonecalls, emails, administration, grass cutting, cleaning and meeting/greeting for The Cud Life Campsite as well as running two full time businesses and two holiday cottages. We sincerely wish you had made your comments known to us at any point during your stay and given us the opportunity to explain, apologise and most importantly put right as it really truly matters to us that ALL our guests leave here happy and I for one have lost sleep over this review thinking that you did not enjoy your stay. We feel we are very open and approachable, David always walks the campsite twice a day, enquiring how everyone is enjoying their stay while asking for suggestions on how we can improve - we don't understand why you didn't mention anything to him then unless you didn't want it sorting out and just wanted to leave a bad review? |

We have just returned from a lovely (if not wet) weekend at The Cud Life, Harrogate. I have to say this is a truly beautiful setting for the site and they seem to have got everything right. It`s small enough not feel overwhelming and the firepit in the middle is a lovely gathering point, yet if you don`t like socialising you don`t feel you have to sit around it. I am not one to use the shower facilities at all, but at this site I did, they were spotless, warm, well equipped and kept to a high standard all weekend. The site is just outside of Harrogate and only took us about 5mins to get into the centre of town by car. We will definitely be returning again with friends and family, and our kids ( ages 13 and 9) loved playing frizbee and footy etc on the field.

We have just returned from our second stay at The Cud Life and again had a fantastic time. Lovely site, clean and spotless facilities with hot spacious power showers with private cubical area to get dried/changed. Radio, hair dryer, GHD's, baby changing something for everybody.
There is a central fire pit which was lit on the saturday night and is a good meeting point to make new friends.
Would definitely come back again

I stayed here for one night mid week. The camp site is gorgeous, surrounded by beautiful countryside and close to Harrogate town centre. There is a bus that runs from the road outside the camp site into town. The shower block was immaculate, even had a heated towel rail. Its all been very well thought out, and I will be back with my family for a visit. Probably the nicest facilities I've ever come across at a camp site
