We stayed here after this site being recommended. We are new to caravanning and was looking for a site near to home for weekends and this one being only half an hour away would be ideal. We arrived on the Friday, my friend and her family also booked in for the Friday night keen to test their tent out for a festival later in the year. The check in was fine very friendly and the little shop attached is fully stocked with all essentials and more. We also hired a electric cable which I think was £5 for the weekend and a £30 deposit. The site had two pools for fishing and two parks one filled with sand for the toddlers and a bigger one with a great slide for the older ones and a football pitch next to it. The shower block was fine, managed to have a warm shower and there was another toilet block nearer to me which was handy. There is also a little take away shop, but was told that they do shut early if they sell out, so not to be relied on heavily but there was local takeaway menus up in the dish washing facilities and told there is no problem with delivery. We had a barbecue both nights we stayed. You can not fault the site but unfortunately for us our son had some boys mean to him on the park after our friends had left on the Saturday, so this put us off but would definitely go back with friends.

This is our 2nd visit this month and we have enjoyed it on both occasions.

The only negative I have is about the shower facilities as there is only one shower block with approx. Six showers available to females and I presume the same for men. There are two toilet blocks (one within the shower block). In my opinion there are not enough for such a large campsite and experienced queuing at peak times. They appeared dirty/muddy and could definitely do with being cleaned more often and updated.

Now for the positives which definitely outweigh the above negative:

The online booking system is great and very easy to use. You select your pitch from a map and you can finalise payment via PayPal - easy peasy!

You arrive at Reception which is also a well stocked shop with food essentials as well as toys, games & a small selection of camping equipment.

The receptionists are really helpful and friendly. They give you advice on how to pitch your tent correctly. You are also issued with a map and entrance card. There is also staff available to help on site that are easily located as they drive around in buggies.

We have an 8 man tent which occupies 2 adults and 2 children (aged 6&2). Our pitch was very large and offered more than enough space for our tent and gazebo. The pitches are also well spaced out. You have access to drinking water points and Elsan points that are well placed around the campsite.

There are two playgrounds which are 5* in my opinion, and are great for keeping the kids entertained. Both parks are well equipped with sand pits, swings, slides, climbing frames etc and are fenced off. Our pitch was close to the playground and we were able to have a clear view of them playing and making friends from the comfort of our tent.

Also on site is a take-away which offers chips, burgers, pizza etc and also has ice creams, sweets and cans of pop etc.

The washing up facilities are good with many sinks available. Within this area is also a large freezer.

This was very relaxing experience for our family with stunning views to enjoy and is value for money.

We will be back again and again.

This was our second camping trip to Pillaton Hall Farm in Staffordshire, located between Penkridge and Cannock. We rarely revisit campsites but we weren't disappointed with our second trip (apart from the stormy weather!). We booked online and chose two adjacent electric pitches within view of the children's play park; we had plenty of room and privacy. Since our last visit the owners have built a second play park for younger children. This one was nicknamed 'The Sand Park' by my kids because it was completely covered in play sand. As a result, my kids had been banned from The Sand Park by the second day of our trip.

The toilet facilities appear inadequate for a site of its size, only four showers for ladies and five toilets (in the main block; four other toilets were available around the site). However, I never had to queue for a shower, and only for a minute or two for the toilet. More consideration for fellow campers would've helped in that respect (some parents weren't very aware of what their children were up to). The toilet facilities weren't kept especially clean, again that was down to inconsiderate campers rather than the site managers. The site managers were very visible on site, rather strict with respect to BBQs and campfires. If you're not cooking on a fire you can't have one at all (they said, although we were 'allowed' to keep our firepit). Just make sure you burn charcoal and not wood, and have some sausages handy!

During our stay we visited Coalport, the location of some Ironbridge Gorge museums. We had a trip down the Tar Tunnel and a walk around the Jackfield Tile Museum. We had a great meal at the Half Moon pub on the River Severn. Instead of revisiting Blists Hill Victorian Town, we spent a very wet day at the Black Country Living Museum, where we also had a trip on the Dudley Canal through the tunnels. I finally got my wish to visit Lichfield, and we had a walk around the cathedral and Dr Johnson's birthplace. A great location for a family camping holiday.

We stayed here for the weekend with friends, the pitch size was good but after booking our pitch online, so we were next to each other, when we arrived someone was in our pitch once we found them as the pitch number was on the ground and the paint really needed going over as they were very worn. The toilets and showers were cold and filthy. When we checked in we were told that you had to be centrally to the pitch and that if you wasn't you would be fined! think this is a bit harsh, the fishing was fairly cheap and plenty was caught over the weekend. You had to keep an eye on your equipment though, my partner took the dog for a walk and when returned someone had move his stuff and took his place, he wasn't gone long. The site had plenty for children on, which for us was a downside as the parents on the site didn't keep eye on them so most children were just running wild (parents seemed more interested in getting drunk). The village was lovely with lots of shops and a big market on saturdays. We got some food from the takeaway on site and it wasn't the best, its only open on a weekend yet didn't have a lot of the menu available. The staff were rude and unhelpful. We wont be visiting again as the site was not for us,

Our first stay and what a great few days and only 1/2 hour from home, just what you need when you finish work late on a Friday. The site is very clean and tidy. Staff are helpful and friendly. The pitches are well spaced so you have plenty of room. We were not too sure about the site when we looked on their website because it looks out dated, but how wrong was we. Lovely views across Cannock Chase and we walked into Penkirdge to the Saturday market and popped into some lovely pubs. This is a site we will be going back to very soon

Really enjoyable weekend at this site. Very friendly reception staff. Nice big site with plenty of space between pitches. Like the online booking and being able to choose which pitch number you want if it's available. 4 fishing pools which were quite busy with fishermen when we visited. Plenty of room to walk the dog. Only negative is the toilet and showers, they are a little dated and could do with updating so used our toilet and shower in the caravan. All in all good site and will use again.

When we arrived I thought we were going onto an industrial estate.

We had to drive half a mile from the reception to the pitch, I felt we were overlooked from every angle. We asked to move to 106 which was much better, the staff were very accommodating and friendly

We overlooked the fishing lake, very nice and well kept grounds.

I was uncomfortable going to the toilets later in the evening as the teenagers seemed to think they were a meeting point, on the Sunday when the many had left it was lovely and peaceful.

Downside. Shower cubicles could do with a scrub and cleaned more often when busy.

All in all it was ok for 2 nights

Have camped in UK for years. This has got to be one of the best campsites I have ever been on. Visited site with newly acquired FC. Plenty of space between plots. Beautiful outlook. Extremely well kept site. Specific enclosed dog walking area. Showers etc clean and plenty hot water. Extremely helpful and friendly wardens patrol the site and are on hand if you need information and help, especially with myself, dippy female not able to work jockey wheel. Will definitely go there again. If there was a downside, it is noise from M6, but that is only in distance. Don't have children, but there are a couple of play areas and plenty of green space. There are fishing lakes on site, obviously, so children must be supervised.

The wife and I have stayed at Pillaton three times now. Back in 2009/2010 for a couple of nights in September of those years. Then the site closed for a year and reopened for 2012 I believe.

We went back for the Whitsun bank holiday in May 2013 and found much similar to 2009 and a few changes. The reception is now in a different area and often open later than before. Our arrival was handled in a very friendly manner despite us being quite late at 9pm.

The pitches at Pillaton are a half mile from the reception and shop, not as large as some sites but should be big enough for almost all units. There is a marked area where you are asked to place your tent/caravan/motorhome and I assume you spread out any other equipment (tables etc. ) next to this. Seemed to work for us with no complaints from the staff.

The site itself is beautiful with mostly flat grass pitches, the fishing polls and a fair number of trees and hedges. The grass and road areas are kept nigh on immaculately. For facilities there are two kids' play areas, a takeaway and three toilet blocks - one of which also has showers etc. The main block is quite modern and is heated whereas the outer toilets seem to be older and un-heated but still perfectly adequate.

The only real problem was that two out of three mornings I had to take cold showers. By 8am there was no hot water, nor was it available at 11am or 4pm. The staff, who were otherwise lovely, seemed to think this was 'what to expect on a busy bank holiday weekend when we are full'.

Now I accept they were almost at capacity, and I would not have minded waiting a while for a shower but there was no hot water whenever I tried. My wife was told that they have a hot water tank heated by an oil fired system and it takes time to reheat after it's run out. The only other site we visited where water ran out, the proprietor was so concerned that he personally apologised to all the campers and invested in a new water heating system for the next season.

I would still say it's worth staying here, especially if you have children or enjoy fishing.

Overall, very nice site for a weekend camping. We went with our friends and had pitches 84 & 85, plenty of room for the kids to play between and around the two tents (and we have big tents anyway). If we were to return, it would only be however because of it being close to home and for the fishing.

Its worth noting that The little Fryer on site is only open over the weekends, we only had fries from there one night and they were expensive for the size of the portion. We ordered a delivery from the Wing Fat Chinese one evening and the food was good, average takeout prices.

Positives -

Fishing, hubby and boys loved it and there was plenty of choice of pools, reasonably priced.

Most pitches grassy and flat.

Beautiful views across the fishing lake and we were told we could pitch facing any way we wanted, providing we used the marked out area as the central point.

Shop on site providing essentials if you needed(although Asda superstore is very close and easy to drive to in 5 minutes and of course much cheaper!).

Negatives -

Main toilet block is looking a little tired and could do with a repaint.

Smaller toilet block during our stay was not cleaned properly, in four days of our stay, the same grime at the back of the seats remained, together with both blood and 'other' unsavoury things spread across the cubicle walls of the ladies, cleaners should take a closer look!

Hot water ran out on a couple of occasions during the busiest part of the bank holiday weekend (however, when we let reception know they did look into it straight away to see if there was a problem with the system). It was resolved by the following day.

The only thing that would put us off going again is the lack of flexibility on extending your departure time. We said we wanted to stay another night initially due to anticipated better weather for packing away a dry tent, afterwards however, when the weather changed we ended up only leaving 2 hours over our initially booked time. We were still however made to pay for another FULL night stay. The site was at this point fairly empty so it could not be said 'they'd possibly lost a booking on account of us being there late'. There are many other sites that offer newer, cleaner and nicer facilities that charge for an extra 4 hours, half a day etc, much more reasonable and this sort of customer service is more likely to make me want to return to a site.
