This was our second visit to this campsite and will definitely not be the last! All round excellent site, stunning views, great facilities, very child friendly, staff all very helpful and polite.

The under 5's bathroom was excellent as both my children hate showers so this was used most nights after visits to the beach and playing in the parks!

Bricks are very handy to find for use with disposable BBQs.

All facilities were clean and tidy, only thing I found was the showers were not overly hot and I used them at different times of the day, but not worth complaining about as everything else is excellent.

Finding this site was relatively easy, however I will say if your towing a caravan it is best to go nice and slow on the last few hundred yrds or so as you could easily miss the entrance and turning round is not an option. It would be helpful for the site to have a sign opposite entrance to give a clear indication to turn. On arriving to this site we checked in and was greeted by a very helpful kind gentleman who told us where to find our pitch.

We were very lucky to have been given a relatively flat hard standing pitch with beautiful views. However, is wasn't long before we discovered how fortunate we were in obtaining a flat pitch as some of the other pitches were sloped from mild to severe gradients. Some steep to the point where awnings could not be used. It said in the leaflet that pitches were to be 6 metres apart but most pitches once the awning was erected became more like 10 feet apart and remember your vehicle has to fit in that available area.

The site offered one toilet/shower/dish washing block which was positioned in a central/top location which meant a long walk for some but a hill climb for everyone, and I mean a hill climb. Not good for the elderly or expectant mothers (my wife was expecting on this occasion). The toilets were dated and showers were in desperate need of modernisation. I understand the need to conserve water in dry periods but the shower buttons only stayed on for a few seconds and was a down right hindrance to have to constantly keep pressing. Not fun when trying to wash a childs hair? Wash basins were fine and hand soap provided. There was one complaint I found quite disgusting, having a freshwater tap/water waste and chemical waste all in one small block next to each other with only a small 3 ft high wall separating them. No means to flush chemical waste other than a hose. The disposal point was simply a hole and that was it.

The site is positioned in a beautiful location overlooking the splendid views of the river Dart. Plenty of nice walks. Never mentioned in a lot of these reviews is TV reception or phone reception. Well I can tell you DVB (digital TV reception) was good and mobile reception was fair to good on most carriers. Maybe in time this particular site will take notice of these reviews and take on board the needs of the customers and insure a happy experience. We were lucky this time regards pitch location but the overall experience prevents us from wanting to return.
Management response: Many thanks for your review, we would like to respond to your comments.

We absolutely always have a minimum of a 6 meter gap between units, (and a 3 meter gap for group bookings), we have to ensure we have this for H&S reasons. Every customer is told about the necessary spacing between units & which way round to pitch before they do so by our wardens. We also constantly check this throughout every day to make sure we adhere to the necessary standards required. We also have specific measurements for each pitch, hence why we will never take a booking without the customers unit dimension. This ensures that we never go above a certain unit size for every pitch, to ensure the Correct distancing between units. It is something that we are very concentrated on because we know the important of the H&S of it.

With regards to our sloping pitches, our customers are always informed if their pitch is gently sloping, none of our pitches have a steep Gradient. We find all of our customers are more than happy to use their chocks to level themselves if necessary. We also have many new levelled hard standing pitches that are completely level. Unfortunately we can not do anything about the fact that Devon is hilly!

We turned up at Galmpton based on it being marked on a map in the location we wanted to be in – we didn’t do any advance research. We struck lucky as Galmpton is a delightful site, well organised and clean and with very friendly, helpful staff and wonderful views. On arrival we were warmly greeted by several staff and they were always willing to help when we had questions. We learned that they bought this site earlier in the year. We chose a level grass pitch with EHU by a fence that we could chain our bikes to, with the most amazing views down the River Dart. It was also a very short walk to the impressive bathroom facilities, washing machines, washing up and water supply. The choice of pitches varied – some level on grass, some on hard standing, some sloping and needing levelling blocks.

The facilities were well designed and always spotless. The number of loos, basins and washing cubicles meant that there were always plenty spare. The six showers were never all in use. What we really liked about the showers was that in each cubicle there were three sturdy double hooks (if only all sites took note!), a shower curtain in the middle, and a plastic stool which could be used either to sit on if needed in the shower, or to keep things on in the ‘dry’ bit beyond the curtain. Showers had good flow and were nice and hot – the sort that run for about 20 seconds before you have to push them on again. Drainage was also really good so we didn’t stand in smelly water, and the cubicle walls were very clean. Rubbish facilities and re-cycling were kept clean and easy to use.

The site was very child friendly with two superb wooden play areas and grass space (not level!) and there was even an outdoor table tennis table. There was a well-stocked information room and a small shop on site. Lots of local walks, and very dog friendly with bins around the site.

Galmpton is extremely fortunate in having superb village shops: the butcher was always incredibly helpful and cheerful and his meat is locally sourced and delicious. The village shop stays open long hours and has local cheeses (Sharpham Rustic is wonderful), interesting veg (purple carrots!), fresh bread and a good range of provisions and magazines. We didn’t shop in any supermarkets in our 6 day stay as the village stores were so good. Please support them!

There is lots to do in this area and we bought a 5 day ‘Jubilee Pass’ to use on the steam train that goes from Churston Station just up the road. Our pass worked out very good value and enabled us to go on coastal and river cruise, open topped bus and more – we took our bikes and used these to get around parts or walk, tour and explore.

Great site – highly recommended.

This is a great site and really well located. The views are really lovely and the staff very helpful too.

We were on one of the last EHU pitches before you got to the small tent area at the top of the site. Our pitch was a little small and we'd probably try to choose one of the other EHU tent pitches next time. However, it was level and for a TT that's a must!

The toilet, shower and washing up facilities were good. Clean, good showers, always hot and we rarely had to wait. Only criticism would be that they advertised a family bathroom facility which we have found useful in the past with 2 small children but we didn't realise until we got there that this was going to cost us a deposit (£5 I think) PLUS £2 a go to use it! We stuck with the showers - luckily even the little one was ok under the shower!

Play area was really nice for the kids. Site was well maintained and very clean. The pizza man comes twice a week with delicious pizza's which is a real bonus!

As mentioned the location was really great for seeing all the sights of Brixham, Dartmouth, Paignton etc.

We went on spring bank holiday week and one night we were kept awake by something going on down at one of the harbours - we never found out what it was and don't know if it is an annual thing or not.

Overall, we'd definitely go again and would highly recommend the site.

 What a gem!

This is such a well run site, with awesome views across the River Dart. The facilities are immaculate, spotlessly clean. There are individual wash cubicles as well as communal, which to us is a real bonus, and of course showers and plenty of loos. Lots of hot water too. The facilities block is closed for cleaning between 11 and 1. 30pm but to be honest for us at least that didn't present a problem.

Rob showed us to our pitch and he suggested the one next too us might be better due to the mud of the one allocated. He checked availability and it was free. What great service! Ok it was just outside main season but still, he didn't have to offer.

This is a really peaceful site, there were families with children around but there was little noise other than happy kids. The play area is probably the best we've seen.

Rob mows the grass daily and this really helps to keep the site looking so good. There is a small shop stocked with all the essentials, and you can order a morning paper, bread, croissant etc. Also a great little information room with ideas for walks - it is a fabulous area for walking.

To be honest, we simply cannot fault it and look forward to coming back next year. Happy campers!

This was our first time at the Galmpton Touring Park, and we had a very nice welcome. My folding camper was taken to the pitch and positioned for me. Only one toilet/shower block for the whole site, campers and caraveners alike, but this was not a problem as the pitch position we had was reasonably close. The toilet/shower block are cleaned every day between 11. 00-1. 30pm, but only the showers closed.

This is a very quiet, peaceful site with great views over the Dart estuary, get a good sunset and it is brilliant for the photographer in all of us.

We did have a few problems with the weather and the rain, the water collected under our awning carpet as the pitch was on a slight incline. A few more hard standing pitches would be good. All in all a good site, helpful with any questions I had.

I had a nice relaxing holiday and have no problems visiting again.

This site was great for the view, and for me, being close to the steam railway. To be close to the river and the railway is my dream ticket. The site was well maintained and the facilities could not be faulted. The pitch fee was a bit higher than we are used to paying but worth it because of the position of this lovely site. Plenty to visit in the area. A very efficiently run site. I would recommend to anyone.

Have just turned from a 10 day break at Galmpton and this was our second time here. We had booked a standard service pitch which had hardstanding for the floor and car plus grass for the awning.

On arriving we were told to put the caravan and the awning on the hardstanding. When this was queried we were told it was because six weeks previously it had rained considerably and we would have been begging to go on the hardstanding. We were told that we could not put our awning on the grass despite asking. I now have two holes in my new flooring because of the stones (too many to remove from pitch and I had two floors down).

The grass cutting is obsessive, starting at 8:30 until 5:00 every day rain or shine. Still no grass holder and you end up walking grass cuttings into your awning/caravan.

The use of the tractor to take people to their pitches in my opinion is ott. I live next to a farm and the the farmer doesn't use his tractor this frequently. The site is in danger of losing it's spectacular view because the trees need cutting.

Toilet/shower block is kept spotless. This is closed daily between 11:00 and 01:30 for cleaning. Please do not turn up at 10. 55 for a shower because you will be told that you will be longer than 2 minutes and basically go away.

At the moment the fare for the ferry to Torquay is 1 Pound each way.

The food at the Manor Inn is nice but if you want a good Italian meal I recommend Biancos in Torquay. Not cheap but the food is fantastic. The area surrounding this site is glorious and Plymouth is well within travelling distance being only 30 miles away.

As I said before this was our second visit but unfortunately due to issues mentioned above we will not be returning to this site.

Just returned from (nearly) two weeks at this site. Beautiful views across the river Dart. The site is sloping. My little girl kept ending up at the bottom of the bedroom in our tent, and we had to level off our cooker table by placing books underneath, otherwise oil, water etc was slopping everywhere. And the tent pitches are absolutely tiny. We had to park outside the tent next door to ours, as if we had parked outside ours, the people in the tent the other side would not have been able to access their pitch. The caravan field seemed more spacious, but the tent field is incredibly badly designed.

One shower/ laundry/ pot washing block at the top of the site and this was always spotlessly clean. However, this was only open from 8am until 10pm so if you are early risers like us, there was nowhere to wash the pots before 8am which is slightly ridiculous. And whatever you do, don't be in the at nearly 10pm or you'll be in trouble! Same goes for the toilet block if they're cleaning between 11. 00 and 1. 30. Also the showers are very small and it was difficult to keep your clothes dry while you were in the shower, but they are free and they are always hot. Nice kids playground; my children aged 9 and 5 both enjoyed it.

There is also a problem with the grass cutting. Seriously, does Devon have super fast growing grass or something because the tractor come down every day. And no grass collector on the tractor either so it gets everywhere.

Be warned, the views maybe lovely, but this site is EXPOSED. Ours and about half a dozen other tents plus some caravan awnings blew down in severe winds. Despite the site owners being made aware and having our contact details, no one had the decency to let us know there was a problem, so we came home after 7pm to find our tent flat. If they had bothered to phone us, we could have got back hours earlier and not had to sort this out in the dark. (I realise that it is not their fault that the tent blew down, my point is they are there to manage the site so manage it!) Thankfully our lovely neighbours in the next tent provided lighting and entertainment for the children while we did this (thanks Gemma and James, we owe you one, hope your tent stayed up! x)

The site is ideally located for Paignton, Torquay and Brixham, and Dartmouth is only a short hop on the ferry as well. Well placed for walking on Dartmoor (stunning) and the south west coast path. Loads of attractions close by as well, including Paignton and Dartmoor Zoos, Living Coasts and Dartmouth Castle. Great beaches such as Goodrington and Preston Sands are flat for young kids, and Blackpool sands is stunning although take beach shoes as this is shingle.

All in all the area is lovely, the campsite isn't! The staff don't seem to know the meaning of customer services, there are a list of rules that take up a full a4 page. The pitches are too sloping to be comfortable and it is far too exposed, especially on the tent field. The pitches are far too small. I paid for a super pitch, and feel like I've been ripped off. To give you an idea of how squashed in they are, the people in the tent behind us received a phone call and I could hear both sides of the conversation.

When you arrive Rob will take your caravan to your pitch for you and make sure you have everything you need, what a welcome, then there is the view, wow, the pictures on their website are for real and taken from the site itself.

We arrived just after heavy rain but the slope of the site meant the pitch was fine and we really enjoyed our stay. There is one amenity block which was clean and well looked after and the laundry was welcome but the machine we used took about 2 hours to do a full load. The dog walk area is small but adequate for first and last walkies.

Close by is Sainsburys for the regular stuff and you are close to Paignton and its shops anyway. Very close is Churston Farm Shop which is very well stocked with all the goodies you could want for holiday eating, their meat is excellent quality and the beef has been hung for at least 28 days making the rump steak one the tastiest I have ever eaten.

Galmpton (pronounced Gampton) is well situated for Torquay, Paignton, Brixham and most of South Devon we can recommend the railway journey to Dartmouth followed by a trip up the River Dart to Totnes.

The Dart is one of Britain’s most picturesque rivers and it teems with wildlife, the 3 to 4 hr river trip is a real treat, we paid £22 each for a Jubilee Rover ticket that lasted 2 days from Paignton Railway but you could do things cheaper by shopping around at Dartmouth or Torquay.

Sharpham Wine and Cheese on the west bank of the Dart is well worth a visit with tours and wine and cheese tasting it makes a very pleasant afternoon. There are lots of beaches around but for a real beach treat travel a few miles to Bigbury it is well worth the trip and has both dog friendly and dog excluded beaches.

One night we ate at the Manor Inn in Galmpton which has free WiFi. The food was good, reasonably priced and the service excellent even though they were understaffed.

We would not hesitate to recommend this site to anyone
