Just returned from our 5th visit in 2 years and never fails to disappoint. Arriving on a very wet and miserable day Peter the owner was there to meet us, as usual and offered a much needed helping hand to erect our new awning.
Unfortunately the weather didn't improve until the day before we left but we still enjoyed our stay due to the relaxing environment of the site. The facilities were as usual spotless and the friendliness of the owner and his parents was second to none.
It will not be our last stay at Wagtail, it is one of favourite places and plan to go at least once a year.
A big thank you to all. See you next time!

A Gem Of A Campsite!
We stayed here for a fortnight in May and certainly would have no hesitation in recommending or returning! The site is lovely and location for exploring York and surrounding areas perfect. If you are looking for a site with lots of facilities - playground, clubhouse etc then this is maybe not for you. However if you are looking for a pitch overlooking a lovely large fishing lake, plenty of space for children to play and a great 'open' feel about it (we stayed over the bank holiday and it never felt 'cramped' on the site) then this is the place to be. We stayed with our 3 year old boy and he loved the site. We took his bike and he spent many an hour doing 'laps' of the lake on it and running around freely with the other children on site. The shower blocks were lovely and clean and we found them always available and the washing up facilities to the rear of the toilet blocks again are clean and there is always washing up liquid and cloths if you require them. The owners are friendly and extremely helpful, with lots of local knowledge to share. Huntington itself is a lovely village, with a great pub for food and several takeaways, and the drive into York is short. All in all a perfect site for those looking for peace and tranquillity rather than gimmicks - not to be overlooked!

(Couple - late 40's/early 50's - look for peace, quiet and tranquillity, but with a few mod cons).
Stayed 2 nights - Fri 28/02 to Sun 02/03
Booked the day before by 'phone. All went smoothly. Site was easy to find (1 turning, and 1 minute, from the main A64). Informal but informative reception was had, and we were left to settle in with no fuss, no pack drill. Just how we like it.
It was Feb, so obviously quiet, (Just us and one couple in a 'van) and lacking in colour and vibrancy, but the grass was green, and in all honesty, the ground was better than expected, as we'd had a lot of rain (nationwide), half the country was still flooded. It was wet, but far from boggy or patchy. The only squelchy ground we witnessed was over the far side of the fishing pond, which isn't camp ground. And besides, it has a slab path all the way around!
It's stony ground (on the pitches) below the 2 inches or so of soil/grass, so Rock pegs are advised. I was aware of that, and had them, and came away with not one bent peg, and they all held firm. Certainly at this time of year, a better pitch could not be expected! There's ample water points and EHU posts around the perimeter.
The site barrier comes down at dusk, but you get a swipe card for that, and a key for the loos, so no concerns about 'uninvited guests'!
A more than adequate amenities block. In the gents. 2 very large showers, with a chair and hooks (screened from the actual shower, so stays dry!), 2 WC's, 2 sinks and urinals.
Unlimited hot water, no coins needed for the shower, just a push button. Underfloor heating, which was set just right. Comfortable, no draughts, and spotlessly clean.
Around the back, there's a covered washing up area, and info/leaflets etc, and also ample bins and recycling facilities.
There's also a separate loo for the anglers, which obviously helps with keeping 'ours' clean.
The owners showed their faces at regular intervals, checking all was clean and stocked, and coming for an amiable chat to check all was ok. Which it always was.
There were 3 or 4 anglers show up on the Saturday morning, so although the pond (small lake?) looked a bit drab, I'll put that down to the time of year. There were fish in there, because I saw one being reeled in!
The site has quick and easy access to both the A64 for the seaside and/or North York Moors (we opted for the wonderful Whitby, less than an hour at a steady plod!), and the Monks Cross retail park/supermarkets (5 mins, max!), which also includes the Park & Ride into York itself, so an excellent location. There is a bit of traffic going by the site entrance, and it can be heard, so if you are sensitive, ear plugs may be advised for sleeping. But, it isn't excessive, and soon becomes just a background hum. It is not a main road!
All in all, This isn't the most picturesque camp site we've been to, or have the most breathtaking views, or woodland birdsong, but I'm fully aware that it was winter time! And besides. It is much beyond 'basic', better than 'adequate', and for anyone looking for a base for York, or who finds a trip from home to the North York coast or moors just that bit too far, it is perfect, and for that reason alone, I don't see any reason why we would not return.
Despite my seemingly lack of excitement, if you can come away from site on a cold, wet, winters weekend, and have absolutely no complaints whatsoever, then they are clearly doing something right!

We visited site end of Nov/early Dec. Met by family who were extremely helpful. Site facilities immaculate. Washrooms exceptional, however it was low season and I hope the facilities will accommodate a full site. Fishing available on site. The owner suggested places to eat (Blacksmiths Arms served great food), also places to visit around York and further afield. Lots to see and do. Retail park close by plus Toby Inn, Chinese and Indian food. Definitely will revisit.

We have just returned from a weekend stay at Wagtail Park and it was perfect for what we required. We were met by the friendly owner who showed us to our pitch and also gave a guide to York leaflet, which came in very handy. The toilets and showers are probably the best we have come across and were exceptionally clean every time we used them.
The site is perfectly placed for those wishing to explore York as the park and ride at Monks cross is only a few minutes drive away. We also visited the York Motorsports village where we raced go-karts which was fantastic! We have an 8 year old and a 14 year old and we all had a great time.
The site is very well maintained and the owners very friendly, highly recommended.

This is a wonderful site. Very well kept with a fishing lake. We didn't fish because we were just there for 2 nights to visit York, but for £5 a day we would of if we had longer. The Gentleman on the next pitch was a regular and had many a good catch.
It was very busy the Saturday with a lot of family groups and single sex groups, so the first night was very noisy. Gangs of young lads messing around the toilet block and girls shouting at 1am, but this is no fault of the site owners. The Gentleman on the next pitch said it had never been that noisy before so we won't let it put us off coming again.
The shower block even though it was busy was spotless and we never had to wait. Even though we had all the information we needed told to us when we arrived along with a map of York and information on the park and rides, there were menu's for local restaurants and takeaways and other information in the toilet blocks that we found very useful.
The next day when we came back from York the site was a lot quieter with 6 other vans and a few fisherman. It was so peaceful I wished we could of stayed longer.
We would definitely use this site again and would recommend it to anyone who wishes to visit York or just spend a few days fishing.
Peter and his Mum and Dad should be congratulated for providing such a wonderful site and for being such friendly hosts.

Wagtail Park is worthy of the comments and reviews posted on UK campsites.
Our stay was for the last two weeks of July and the weather was very kind to us, warm and sunny.
The site is spacious with good sized pitches, with plenty of EHU points and water taps, there are currently 20 pitches, for caravans, camper vans or tents.
Wagtail Park is a new site that is enjoying its third season, so the facilities are new and very modern, full credit to Peter and his parents, they keep the whole site spotless.
The park was full during our first weekend, but during the week the site was less than half full, which surprised me as the prices are not over expressive, especially as the site is well positioned for York, with park and ride just over a mile away, as is Monks Cross shopping centre. Although the site is so close to York it is far enough off of the ring road not to be effected by road noise.
The site at one end has a small lake that is well stocked with fish and enjoys 25 pegs, this was well used, and the landscaping and grass is well kept over the whole of the site.
The owner’s family were very friendly and offered advice on the surrounding area and places that were well worth a visit, although we stayed for two weeks we still did not manage to fully cover the area, there is much to do and see.
Whilst a resident at Wagtail Park, you were offered free membership of Huntington’s social club, free entertainment on Sunday was provided, we enjoyed three wonderful evening there,
We are experienced campers of many years, I would highly recommend Wagtail Park, it is such a pity that we live over fours hours away in Kent, but will revisit this site in the future.

This was our first visit to this small and relatively new site on the outskirts of York. The owners (father and son) visited the site more than once a day and always stopped for a chat which resulted in a friendly atmosphere throughout the site. The facilities are modern and clean with plenty of hot water although a more thorough clean once a week may help maintain them to a higher standard. The grass was being cut as we arrived on the Friday afternoon which meant it did trail everywhere. This could be easily resolved by cutting the grass after the weekend when the site is quieter.
There is a fishing lake on site which is used by campers and the general public for a daily charge of £5. 00. The majority of visitors had a fisherman amongst them (us included) but it didn't feel like it was just for fishing enthusiasts. The general public using the lake did not cause any issues as the lake felt quite separate to the camping area.
The site is about a mile away from Monks Cross, an out of town shopping centre, which has a Park & Ride service to the city centre and two decent supermarkets plus a good selection of high street shops. The village of Huntington is just over a mile away where there are a few pubs and plenty of takeaways (menus are displayed on site). It is a shame there is not a bus service closer to the site as this would be a real asset but it is on a link road so unlikely to happen. There are taxi services advertised on site.
This is a site where you can get away from it all and enjoy some time outdoors with the benefit of a city not being too far away if the weather is poor or entertainment is required.

This is a great site, perfect for a long weekend. We were a group of 15 people staying in 4 tents. There was no problem about us being able to be grouped together and the owners father who was extremely helpful, met us on arrival. This was a bank holiday weekend and although it was fully booked, it didn't feel like it as there is lots of space and privacy.
We had already decided to go to York races on the Saturday and the owner was very helpful and had negotiated a good price with a local taxi company which took us from the site directly to the racecourse.
The site itself is very pretty and well maintained - the toilets and showers were very clean. If you are looking for place with on site entertainment etc. , this site isn't for you but if you want s bit of peace in a beautiful setting, it is ideal.

Stayed late May bank holiday and found this to be a lovely, small friendly site. It is doesn't have a shop or children's play area but that suited us. Maybe something to consider if you have children that need entertaining.
There is one shower block with a ladies and gents at either end. Inside there are two large level access showers, three toilets, three sinks and one hairdryer (20p) and I believe the gents was the same. Although the site was full we had no problems or had to wait. There was a covered veg prep area around the back along with the bins/recycling. There is a fishing lake making a nice view for those pitched beside it. Easy to get into the centre of York which took no time at all.
I thought the site fees expensive for such a basic site, (£25pn +£3pn awning) even taking into consideration it was bank holiday and it's closeness to centre of York. The site owner tells us that he is in the process of putting in more EHU pitches, if so I wonder if the present shower/toilet facilities would be adequate. If you want a peaceful quiet stay then this would suit. We would return.
