I have mixed feeling about this site.

A busy site with lots of tents and caravans most had children so that was good

A big problem for me was the play area. This was right next to the main entrance on the road bit quite a busy area, the fence was right next to the forest which is a great big drop off the end and no barrier and the kids play area very basic lots of kids kept coming in and out of the area crossing the roady bits to the barns which were good had table tennis and free bats just the balls to buy

Shop ok very basic we didn't need to use it though cause only stayed one day and took all the food etc we need

The area itself is lovely a nice walk at back of park and through a forest and the people seemed nice didn't really see many workers

There is pot washing facilities

2 loo blocks I would say not enough loos only 3 in one black and 4 in the other and there are 4 fields for camping it really is a massive site and there are only 4 showers clean and warm but were busy all day at 7am they were ok though!

I think for what you pay its fantastic we paid £13 a night and there was enough to keep us occupied just for me it lacked something like I say I have mixed feeling I think I would go back but just because where it is and how close you are to matlock, trains tram world place etc but wouldn't rush back

Had a great 3 night stay at Birchwood with other family members in x2 tents. Toilets very clean at all times, however showers really need updating but loads of hot water and free. Good pot washing area, did run out of hot water for 1 camper who informed owners who must have switched the boiler back on as there was instant hot water so not a problem. Had EHU pitch near to play area as requested so we could keep an eye on children who thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Camp field without EHU looks a bit sloped in places but have seen worse. Good drainage, we were there on a VERY wet weekend! nice woodland walk. Staff very friendly, general good atmoshere amongst everyone. Would definitely return. Nothing in walking distance but not a problem. 10 mins in car to Ripley or Matloc bath for bigger stores.

Nice site, very nice surrounding. There was a nice forest style walk below the site on the hillside.

The site was ok although make sure you take your levelling chocks with you. Our rear legs were out to the highest and the hitch was resting on the ground.

Even though we didn't have any kids there did appear to be enough for them to do, play area games room etc.

The only criticism we have is the showers. All though they was fine (individual cubicles stone built and free) there was only 4 showers for the whole site. There was lots of people queuing so if you gonna use them, get in early or late. Will go back again.

On arriving at the site which is situated in the middle of a pine forest, we were met by a very laid back owner in the small well stocked shop and told to take our pick of a pitch which we did.

The pitches where a good size, ample for our 8 man tent with EHU too. There was a slight slope but we coped. The site was in good condition very clean and no litter, the two toilet blocks where very clean as well. There was also a laundry and showers but we didn't use them as we only stopped two nights.

Our two kids 9 and 11 enjoyed the park but our friends 4 year old struggled to play on it as it was too big, there are also 3 table tennis tables which are ok but need updating a little. We had a good laugh playing on them as the kids just sat and watched!

Matlock bath and Matlock are only 10 mins away by car. We read that you could walk it but the sites map was hand drawn and hard to understand so we didn't try it out.

The shop didn't open on time which was a pain if you wanted fresh milk, also it closed for a few hours Monday afternoon which I thought was strange and then didn't open when it said it would.

Overall though even with the few negative comments we really enjoyed our first camping trip and would definitely return.

We paid £15 for 3 adults and two children per night.

Arrived on a wet Friday, staff were very friendly, we were on field one with EHU, paid 13 pounds per night, for the 2 adults and 2 children.

Large play area for the kids, also covered area with table tennis if its raining.

Theres 2 toilet blocks, a small one near the entrance and one a bit further up.

As to the comments before about the showers, there was never a que, and the site was quite full, they were always clean, also there was no extra charge for using them.

The little shop on site, is open all hours, and has everything you can think of, you can also order papers for the next morning.

About 10-15 minutes drive away is a Sainsburys.

Also about 5-10 minutes drive to Matlock Bath.

Theres plenty to do in the area, if you like walking, biking, or other outdoor stuff.

All in all had a good weekend away.

Please note though, if you want EHU pitch, then you need to book in advance, as field one was full.

Just got back from our first ever camping trip and had a fantastic time, good company, not too bad weather.

Campsite was lovely and safe for my kids to explore, toilets were nice and clean and bonus a hairdryer.

Site was on a slight slope and only gripe was shop didn't open when it said it would be open, being our first trip I forgot lots of stuff.

Spacious site for tents with non EHU, nice play area and forest walks for kids. Pub with good food only few minutes drive away.

Toilets clean but a bit of a walk from the tent field.

The only downside was the noise at night. The campsite requests no noise after 11pm but this was not enforced and spoilt our stay.

We got a friendly welcome when we arrived the shop had everything you need the only down side was the showers they were dirty so we went without. We only stayed 1 night so we were ok. The area is very nice and you can go on some lovely walks. We will go back just hope the showers are better next time

We arrived at the site Wednesday dinner, and the place was nearly empty. Fantastic. Quiet and peaceful. Very clean and owners very helpful. Come Friday things changed dramatically.

Site became very very busy and noisy with kids running everywhere. Owners said that weekends were always busy. 4 showers for about 200 people, in only one toilet block, which after a few busy hours became messy. My advice is to go in the week for a peaceful time or go at weekend to party party

Just returned from a two night Friday-Sunday stay at this site. Party included two families of 2 adults & 2 children, so 8 in total.

Found the site to be large with plenty of room to pitch your tent without being on top of each other, good clean facilities with more than enough toilets and showers and ample hot water for dishes.

Childrens play area in field 1.

Small shop on site.

Small plant shop with plants grown on site.

We were in the second field without EHU not the most level of sites so be careful where you pitch, some bits very steep. Good walks in the area but you will need a car to get to any of the local towns or villages as you are a bit remote.

The only real problem is that the area near the forest side of the site contains wood ants, and lots of them, they are straight out a Hollywood `B` movie and some of the largest ants I`ve seen in this country. The onsite shop does sell ant powder so must know of this problem. The in-laws ended up surrounding the ants nest in a wide arc at the back of their tent to stop them getting in anymore on the Saturday.

Apart from that an enjoyable weekend.
