We visited Birchwood Farm, for a long weekend with our new tent. We wanted to stay reasonably close to home for our return to camping. We had the most fantastic time.
The kids loved it, making lots of new friends. They loved the playground and enjoyed the freedom of going to the well stocked shop by themselves.
The site was busy, but we had no problems with noise. The facilities were clean, showers were warm.
All in all a really great site, very reasonably priced. We will return.

Visited this camp-site at the end of August, the campsite is very nice, with a well stocked shop. Lots of space for your tent. The campsite is very big and well populated during summer holidays, but we had no problem with noise. Apart from a loud family next to us, but this isn't the campsite's fault.
The lady who owns it gave us a map of the surrounding areas, which we tried to follow but kept getting lost, so not sure if this map is correct.
We came to the campsite without a car, as there was a bus route near the campsite, but wouldn't recommend coming without a car as the bus stop is quite far away. However, during the end of our stay, we did find a trail through the forest that lead to the bus stop, which was a lot easier.
Could do with a new shower block, as the cubicle is very small, but relatively clean. Toilet blocks were clean, but could do with being cleaned more regularly.
Cost us £50pp for the week with a tent, which we thought was reasonable.
Lastly, the young girl (owners daughter I think) who works in the shop is very kind, pleasant and helpful. She is a credit to the owners and has a lot of knowledge about the campsite.
All in all, a very nice camp site and would visit again.

We stopped here as our first trip out in our folding camper and wanted to be close to matlock bath as my partner had an event to attend on his classic bike.
The site doesn't allow motorbikes but were happy to let us park it out of the way and cover it up.
The site itself is a big bumpy and you have to go through the 'creepy woods'. We had no trouble getting our fc level. The shop is excellent and very well stocked and prices are very reasonable. The park is basic but is the place to be for the kids. Our kids loved it and made loads of new friends. When the rain comes, the kids hang out in the barn/ping pong arwa.
Toilets were clean and had plenty of toilet roll. Showers were compact but warm and working. No queues when we went at around 9 on a saturday morning. Site was busy but there were no problems with noise etc when we were there.
Prices are reasonable and we would visit again.

Stayed May Bank Holiday. Well stocked shop and lady very friendly when we arrived, then it was all downhill. About 8 rubbish skips all overflowing when we arrived Friday evening still the same when we left on Monday afternoon. Grass very long. Water was hot in showers but there was only 4 so was queues from about 7. 45 til 10am. Also they were about as big as 2 broom cupboards, reminded me of camping 1960's style no heating and no where to put shampoo etc. Toilets were adequate but although not filthy not overly clean. Water not very hot at washing up sinks, and although it's not the sites fault people left them filthy, bits of food and dirty suds left in them, don't know how people can leave them in such a state. We were pitched against a big hedge the children played in it and built dens which wasn't a problem until some of them started climbing it and breaking branches off right above peoples caravans, and to make it worse they were watched by their parents who were even taking photographs. I know the site is not overly expensive £48 for 3 nights but would rather pay more for better facilities.

The approach to the site is very narrow, bumpy and rough but at the same time very scenic. The best part about the site is it's views and woodland walks.
The site takes group bookings which is good in some ways but it doesn't adhere to the 11pm quiet rule, one group outside caravans were wooping it up on the Sunday night until at least 12. 50 when I eventually fell to sleep. On speaking to the owner she was oblivious and said she had been out several times and it was quiet, well I walked around the site at 12. 30 to see where all the row was coming from.
They also allow ball games around caravans and tents, which is also something I dislike in a site, for obvious reasons.
The pitches were on long grass which was o. K as the weather was dry, levellers are needed but this wasn't a problem.
There are quite a few areas for children to play but as with the previous review we encountered the children at the back of us.
They asked when we booked if we were adults so not sure why they didn't put us over the other side of the roadway and put the people with children by the shrubbery where it is evident that they play as there were rope swings and dens. Because of where we were pitched there was a constant stream of children running back an forth within feet of our door and our dog. There wasn't much chance of a relaxing afternoon.
I think the site would benefit from having an adult quiet area.
The toilets were o. K though very busy at times we didn't like the look of the showers so used our own.
Although I liked the views and space of the site it wasn't for me, I felt on edge and I like somewhere I can relax, Ive been there and done that when my kids were young.

We stayed here as a group of 8 in 2 tents, this is large well kept site with several fields, electric hook up is available and there is a shower block of 4 individual showers which a are moderately clean and adequate. Site is child friendly and has a decent playground and kids are safe to roam. The site has an excellent shop open early and shut late stocks a range of food sweets and camping accessories. Toilets are good and clean but with size of site get dirty floors late but that is expected. The pitch we had was quite uneven and sloping but ground was well maintained. Good locations with access to matlock and the peak district, all in all value for money and great for family camping.

Just returned from a 6 night stay. Not too busy when we arrived, but certainly picks up at the weekend with lots of arrivals Thursday and Friday. One or two nights were quite noisy but the 11 o'clock rule seemed to be adhered to, so you can't complain. Didn't stop us getting an early night or two. Playground was a good meeting point for the children and all got on well. The pitches are sloped but nothing unmanageable. The showers were hot and there was never a queue.
We did the usual tourist trips, Dovedale Trail, Alton Towers, Heights of Abraham and Carsington Waters.
Had a great week and would recommend this site for families, and especially value for money.

Just had our first nights camping on the birchwood site. With four children under 12 we wanted a family friendly site that wasn't too noisy, but we chose the hottest weekend of the year so far so it wasn't as quiet as we had hoped with a mass game of cricket going on till about 11pm. But that being said it was still a lovely site with a very good shop and friendly owners. Plenty of walks for the dogs and space for kids to play even though site was quite full. Will be returning in a few weeks but maybe try mid week to see if its any better for noise!

We stayed here for five nights during Whitsun Bank Holiday. A bit 'hairy' driving in. Particularly when you meet another car & caravan on its way out. But nothing my hubby couldn't handle! Nice site. Very children friendly! Nice play area & woods for them to explore! Smashing site shop well stocked and reasonably priced with friendly staff! Toilets were adequate & clean! Showers were good. Only four of them (unisex). But sadly only two working on our visit. Which for a bank holiday was a bit disappointing! Pitches are a reasonable size. & drained well as we had rain! Would definitely return. Kids loved it! Very reasonably priced! Nice area. Lots of places to visit! Matlock. & Bakewell well worth a stroll round! :) xXx
