We really enjoyed are stay at this site and we hoped to go again. W e got put on the top field and we were told to go at the top in case it rained though LUCKILY it didn`t! We had BRILLIANT weather and really enjoyed are stay!
The shop was good and sold a lot (though it was small.)
The pub was very good and we had are tea there on one night, It is only a 5 minute drive and about 30 minute walk, Which is do able ( though we drove.)
We hope we will go again sometime.
One good thing about this site is that you are allowed to have fires.

Just got back from a 3 night stay at this site. Very clean, big pitches, not too bad showers, the toilets were always clean and plenty of loo roll.
There are a few bad points we stayed Wednesday which was ok for the first night but had some 1 pitching there tent at 1 oclock in the morning using there car lights woke us all up, which he said sorry in the morning
Thursday night was very quite and at 11 oclock every 1 was tucked up in bed, great nights sleep
But then, the Friday, the site got overly busy, with tents, people drinking till 2 oclock in the morning being very loud. Nothing got done about this as there didn't seem to be any managers or security on the site, to tell everyone to be quite
Would go back to the site, but think I would pitch in the 3rd field hoping for a bit more piece

This is the second year that we have camped at Birchwood we met up with our son and his family as well as out daughter and her family. It was nice to see the new reception/shop area. The site was quite full with a lot of families meeting up, the reason we had met up at birchwood was to celebrate our sons birthday(40th) by a strange coincidence the family next to him the guy there was celebrating his 40th as well.
The kids enjoyed the play area as did the rest of the kids on the site
The lower toilet near the entrance could do with a update a better hand drier but that's just nit picking
The staff at Birchwood are easy going value for money we would give this site a 9 out of 10 and look forward to using it again

We have been going to this campsite now for the last 12 years and have seen it flourish. This is a fab campsite, lots of space, clean toilets and hot showers that are free. There are some good walks from the site and a lovely atmosphere.
We had to queue for the showers, but not for too long. It was a full site and a hot day, but still only waited for 10 mins max.
We will definitely be returning.

Just returned from spending 3 nights at this great campsite. Spacious pitches, which are a little sloped, but not really a problem. We had electric and agree that you need a long extension, we had to use a different hookup to the one allocated to our pitch. Not a problem but could be when site full.
Owners very helpful and the site, although not full was busy, and very quiet at night. There was silence by 11 and not a lot of movement or noise until about 7.30am.
Didn't have to queue for a shower or washing up and always hot water. I felt the showers a little cramped for washing a child in (making it even more of a chore!) and the loo's whilst adequate, could have benefited from a little more regular cleaning.
We took our son and his friend and they loved the space to play, especially the trees and woods. They also bought table tennis bats from the shop and enjoyed this.
Great area to explore. We had promised the boys Alton Towers one day and this is about 45 minutes away.
Great site, fabulous price.

This is our favourite site local to us for travelling. As we had to cancel another site, due to illness in family, owner very good to fit us in at short notice, [as we are one of her regulars. ]
This site offers many combination of walks of the area. The site has a play area, showers with hot water. Toilets, and pot washing. Close to matlock, [sainburys] wirksworth, belper. Morrisons in matlock bath. Good fresh cook to order food [please be patient when busy] at charles, we dine there when we can. Also a nice little pub with good food close to river derwent [DERWENT HOTEL], which is about 15 mins walk down through woods and along main road. Can recommend this site for anybody, as we have been here many times with tent and caravan.

We arrived at the site on a beautiful summers evening. We had two tents in our group, one with electric hookup and one without but were still able to camp together. The pitches were sizeable and although the site was busy we did not feel hemmed in.
It is very sloped, but this is the Peak district and we had lovely views from our pitch. You do need a long hookup lead and you need to pitch carefully else you'll roll out of bed!
We did queue for the showers, but not for that long and there was always hot water, although the showers did seem to go a bit hot and cold.
We never had to queue for the toilets (there were 6 or 7 ladies toilets down by the reception and I think there may have been even more in another field, I am not sure).
There was a queue for washing up at peak times, but this was no big deal.
The shop was really good and the staff kept it open very late while there was demand for it. It sells pretty much everything and is not a rip-off price wise.
Both the shop and the play area are near the entrance to the site, so you do need to make your children aware of the roads, although every car we saw seemed to be driving very sensibly and slowly so it was not a big problem.
You are in the middle of nowhere down a very long bendy lane, so be prepared to drive if you want to visit any of the local attractions. You can get trains and buses, but the train station is quite a hike with kids (about 2 miles) and once we had got to Matlock Bath there were no taxis to get back. There is a nice park with sand and swings in Matlock Bath, but apart from that and The Heights of Abraham I would not say the town was especially good for kids. We did not do The Heights as at £11.50 per adult and £8.50 per child we felt it was a little pricy.
The kids preferred playing ball games (away from others tents and caravans I hasten to add!) and loved the wooded areas all around the site. There are some stunning walks around here and it is a beautiful area.
We had lunch near the station at Whatstandwell at The Derwent Hotel. Nice food, kids play area and good value although the service at the bar was a little grumpy. We paid £13.00 for 2 adults and a child and this was for proper food not a sandwich.
I'm not sure how much you would enjoy the site if you were not with children - we really saw only families (of which we were one). We did not encounter any problems with noise at night.
We would definitely return and explore more of this loveley area.

Arrived on a Thursday evening and seemed a lovely site. Owners really laid back. Prices very reasonable. Showers and toilets nothing to shout about but adequate. However, the locality and walks are stunning. Try a walk down to the Cromford canal or up to Black Rocks.
However, once Saturday arrived the hoards descended. The site was marked full and although not packed back to back it was very busy and noisy. Queues for the showers, parties well into the night, although these did start quietening down about 11.30pm. It was worth a visit for the surrounding countryside but I doubt if we would return at a summers weekend or school holiday.

We arrived mid afternoon on a Saturday (following Bank Holiday) and the site was busy. We were free to select our own pitch from the areas that were available.
The staff were friendly and offered advice. There was never any queues for the toilets or washing up - we didn't use the showers as we only stayed overnight before we went home.
For £11.50 for one night we were very please with the facilities on site and will definitely be returning as we are keen walkers and it would be a great base for walking in the area for a weekend.

This was our first time camping - myself, husband and nearly 2 year old boy. This was a nice quiet site (although we only stayed Tuesday night through til Thursday night). The toilets were clean as well as the showers and didn't ever have to queue for them - but the site was quite empty when we first got there.
Shop sells bits and pieces and can freeze ice packs (30p per pack). The ground is all sloped so you need to choose your pitch well if you have the option.
Our son loved the play area, but it is really for older children so young children would need close supervision in case they fall off the bridge.
We drove to Morrisons in Belper which didn't take long and then our last night drove to Cromwell (I think) to get fish and chips which didn't take long, although the roads were really narrow and bendy.
This site is only about 5 mins drive from the Tramway museum which is great for families.
