This was our third stay at Beach Wood in our camper van, it is definitely a” must go back to site”. The camp site is situated in a remote part of Derbyshire near Matlock, and is a working farm. It is ideal for walking or just relaxing.
The farm and camp site is a family run affair, which makes it very friendly and welcoming, this is contagious and all the visitor are very friendly which gives it a lovely atmosphere.
The site itself is well a cared for, with a shop for basics, a play park for the children and clean hot showers. When staying at Beach Wood farm you will need to take provisions for at least the first night as there are no shops, pubs or restaurants close by.
Also consider taking book games or d.V.Ds as you are unable to receive a television signal.

We visited this site over the Easter weekend with my two bothers and the kids 10 in all,and found the site to be perfect for all our needs.
There was plenty of room for the all the kids to run around and not get in the way of other campers. We all enjoyed the walk through the woods both day and night.
Could do with some extra showers as these can get a little busy at times, but still managed to ok.
There is a small shop on site for the basics which was great but a bit pricey. The pub down the road The Malt Shovel served a great pint and also some fine pub grub.
All in all a great place for families young and old and look forward to returning soon.

Two adults, five children, 1 dog & a tent.
Unfortunately there is always one that bucks the trend.
Just got back from White peaks, went last minute on the Saturday morning and had a great afternoon at the Heights of Abraham (make sure you get to Matlock early if you want to park).
We took a list of campsites with us, after searching the campsite guide.
We didn't book because it then gave us the option to go home if the weather turned.
Anyway got back to the carpark in Matlock and rang around the campsites, second on the list was Birchwood Farm. Brilliant could fit us in, and were very helpful with directions.
Got to the site, although looked ok but wasn't the sort of site we would normally stay at.
Set over three fields, first field split into three levels with marked pitches.
Very friendly and helpful on reception, It looked like the site was about half full and quite busy.
Found a nice pitch at the furthest lower corner of the last field (we prefer to be away from the hustle & bustle)
Evening was great up until about nine o clock when party time started!, the impromptu performances came from various groups of tents, and included Karaoke (with microphone and amplification), Fireworks and the obligatory various types of loud music, I have to say that after half a bottle of red wine I fell asleep at about eleven with it all going on, but was informed in the morning that it kept the kids and wife awake past twelve o clock.
Just to set the record straight I am neither old, boring or grumpy, I prefer to respect other peoples space and peacefulness.
The toilet facilities would be adequate if the site was a quarter of the size, and I guess at certain times of the day are reasonably clean but as they are so limited they quickly became unusable (no toilet roll, 2 out of 3 blocked) After visiting the toilets we knew that morning showers were not going to be an option.
After saying all this if the site was quiet and had 20% of its capacity I am sure it could be great.
Will be going back to the Peaks but unfortunately won't be going back to this site.

The nicest drive into a site I have ever had! You drive through some woods on your way in and it relaxes you before you get on site.
The welcome at reception is really nice and the wardens are nice and helpful.
There is a large shop on site which is well stocked, but be warned, they didn't sell booze and it was a fair drive to the nearest garage that did and that was expensive!
So there are not many shops close by! So take plenty of booze!
There is a very good play area on site so that's the kids sorted!
The woods are also nice to walk in.
The facilities are adequate and very well looked after.
So its a nice well maintained site that's ideal for seeing the peak district. Though I probably wouldn't return, that's not to say I wouldn't recommend it.

I have only just discovered ukcampsite.Co.Uk and wanted to leave a review of this campsite we used for a weeks holiday last summer.
With 3 kids and 2 dogs in tow, this was an ideal campsite for us! the kids and dogs had loads of adventure space in the adjacent woods and there was also the play park on site for the kids as well.
There wasn't strict pitches and the fields were a little uneven but we found a decent spot no bother in the less busy second field, right next to access to the woods and woodland walks.
The facilities were well kept - washing up facilities and toilets/showers were clean and there was never huge queues when we were there so ample for the site. The small shop was useful although slightly expensive.
The campsite is close to Matlock and Matlock Bath which was great for stocking up on supplies and playing by the river. Abraham's heights was close by which was a fun day out for us all.

We stayed at this site on probably one of the worst weekends weather wise but this did not change a thing about this site!
The owners were very friendly and helpful, the site was very clean with a lot of space to run around on, although this may be different in peak season. We were shown where to pitch our tent and it was on a slight slope but nothing major.
There were two toilet blocks and 4 showers all clean, plenty of loo roll and baby changing facilities and when one of the loo's was blocked it was dealt with straight away. Plenty of hot water and even a little hairdryer, showers were free although a little drafty but it was October and very wet and windy.
The washing up area was undercover with four sinks and drainers.
The play area was ok burnt a bit of energy and the walk through the wooded area was great fun for the children.
All in all a great site, great value and will be going back next year!

Been going to this site for years. Went 5 times this year (2010) we always go with other caravanner taking the children. This is a proper camp site based around a working farm.
It has showers, toilets, pot washing, kids play area, table tennis inside a barn. And electric hookups. With grassed areas and hard standing. We always ask for pitch B, it has its own waste/water and electric and overlooks the park and is close to the shop.
The site is surrounded by pine trees which is very nice and makes the place feel great. The down side is no one can get any tv. In all the years I've been going to birchwood I've never got a tv signal.
This year they have opened up a brand new shop that sells all the usual stuff from food to camping stuff.
Love the site and I'm sure we will be back as usual next spring all the way through till September.

Just returned back from a weekend camping on this campsite. It is located in a beautiful place with lovely surroundings, we had a brilliant time but that wasn't really down to the campsite. I have to say I think four showers to over 100 tents at least is a bit silly, we were pitched on the third field and as they was only one toilet block which was located near reception it was a fair old trek to get there especially with children who need to go to the toilet every five minutes and the overall cleanliness of the place wasn't great. On the whole staff seemed very friendly

Stayed at this campsite over the bank holiday weekend and in my opinion the facilities had problems dealing with the volume of people on site. We estimated 750 people. Having said that we would stay at 'off peak' times due to the local countryside on offer. The site was crowded with lots of groups with 10 or more people. Lots of noise after 11pm. I was kept awake until 3am on all nights we stayed. We were staying in the 3rd field and people were partying until 3am.
Facilities were limited as there was 1 toilet and shower block and a toilet and wash area the other side of the shop. Queues for the showers were very long, we experienced queues of 30mins or more due to the volume of people on the site, One of our party went for a shower and found families were holding the showers for other members of their family. We witnessed a group letting off Chinese lanterns and nearly set a tent alight. This was at 9:30pm when kids were sleeping in tents. (We then saw the owner go around and tell everyone to put out their camp fires as this is not permitted).
The campsite
In the 1st field there were level pitches, field 2 and 3 are a distance from the shower block. Prepare for a walk. Fields 2 and 3 are sloped pitches, some steep. Shower block is limited and cramped in the mens 3 sinks, taps not working properly, but better in the ladies (I've been told). There are 4 showers in total (unisex) for a very big site. We did not get to use these as they always had big queues but in off peak times I'm sure they are fine. The shop seems to be adequately stocked but pricey. The kids liked the climbing area but it was a long way to walk from where we pitched.
Surrounding Area
Great for walks or families who want to explore. We found on the last day a pump house and a railway museum at the bottom of the wooded area next to the campsite.
Conclusion.
I would go to this site again but at off peak times and I would try and get into field 1 as this would save the walk to the toilets and play areas. Maybe as the site was going to be so busy (august bank holiday) they should have got some portable cleaning facilities as this would have sorted the problem. I think, the price they charge reflects the facilities on offer.

Just returned from 2 nights (Sunday and Monday). A really nice 'family' site with mostly families (but not all).
Toilets spotless, never queued. Only very minor thing I could moan about was the overflowing bins.
Site is down a long windy road, but is easy to find. You wouldn't want to be there without a car though.
Kids (3 and 7) loved the play area, nothing flash but safe and fenced off. It's near the road, but then so are all the tents. Even more fun were the woods - we were making dens and whittling sticks in no time and the kids enjoyed that more than the swings! There's even a rope swing if you head down the path towards the bottom of the valley.
For 11.50 a night it was great value and we will return.
Pitches are mostly a bit sloped in the second and third fields, but the ones nearer the shop / entrance looked better. Not a major problem if you pitch wisely.
