Just come back from a weekend break at Birchwood farm, our first camping trip with our children (5 and 18 mths) as a tester for a week in August near the south coast.
After driving past the opening (so did the car behind us) we managed to find somewhere to turn around about 10 mins drive away, the best advice is as you pass the entrance to what looks like an entrance to a holiday village, the campsite entrance is another half a mile or so on the right (assuming you are coming from the A6)
On arriving at reception after a bumpy drive along the site's road, I have to say I didn't get the best feeling or best customer service from the staff, I felt if I was in their way and receiving the basic 'pitch your tent in field 2 or 3' and that was that.
The site is on a slope unless you have EHU so be aware of this and they don't hide this from you as it clearly states it on their website. In fields 2 and 3, you basically pitch where you want/can but note that field 2 has the water tap and field 3 is a good 5 mins walk to the facilities.
Toilets were OK, seemed clean whenever we used them and the site was very busy ! There's only 4 unisex showers, so expect que's at busy times. The shop is very small, but has most things you need or have forgotten.
Most campers started to quiet down around 11 PM but you always get a few groups that fail to respect everyone else, especially those with young children, but this often back fires when the youngsters are up early and playing football etc. By 7 AM tee hee hee !
It's a picturesque site but unless you make friends or go as a group, it's more suited to be a base for activities in the area as there's not much to do unless you just want to chill out and let your youngsters on the tired looking play area.
Would we go again ? maybe if with a group or a few friends.

I am surprised that there are so many positive reviews about this campsite.
As it got closer to the weekend more and more campers arrived on site. The noise was awful and was never controlled. One night there was a drunken man shouting across the field and a dog running around out of control. Not nice with two small children in tow.
The toilet blocks were basic, showers were 'stable' style so the door to the outside had gaps at the top and bottom making it really cold getting in and out of the showers. The shower curtains needed a clean and a few more hooks needed putting up.
The icing on the cake was the family who camped near to us. There was a big group of them and when they left they didn't take their tent down and left all their rubbish lying around. This situation was not dealt with for over 24 hours.
We would camp in the Matlock area again but not this campsite.

Stayed 3 nights over BH weekend. You will tell from the number of reviews it is a busy site. Mostly tents. Agree with others, staff great - taught us the knots for our guy ropes, and lots of space even when busy. Several largish groups so some noise until about midnight. Toilets clean, only cold water for dishwashing (maybe just a bad time). In morning 9 people in queue for only 4 showers, so pick your time. Beautiful area, loads to do for young kids. Great value site for exploring. Would return.

Our first camping adventure as a family, we decided to stay local and Birchwood Farm was 20-30 minutes drive from our house.
Clean facilities, large camping areas, plenty of room for the kids to play with frisbees and footballs.
We had fun going to see the cows in the barn in one of the non-EHU fields.
Staff in the shop/reception very friendly and spent time getting to know their customers, where they're from etc.
The only downsides were that the fields for the non-EHU pitches were on a bad slope and it made meal times very difficult and the shop, although quaint and stocks a lot of items, is too small for more than a few customers to get into and that's if you're slim.
We will be going back again though as we really enjoyed it and I've already recommended it to a member of my family.

My family and I have just returned from a very enjoyable three day stay at Birchwood Farm. The site is spacious covering several fields and we were allowed to choose our own pitch, which enabled us to have a spacious plot, but one that was on a slight slope. It didn't take long for our children, boys aged 7 and 9, to make friends and they spent most of their time at the play area, which looked recently new, or exploring the extensive surrounding woods.
The site's shop was very small but seemed to store everything we'd forgotten to pack, and at very reasonable prices. Ice packs could be refrozen for 30p each. The staff were friendly with a warden regularly patrolling, dealing with queries. Another employee, when not litter picking was cutting the grass, so it always looked tidy.
The toilet blocks were clean and always had a supply of hot water. There were only four unisex showers for the whole site so queueing was frequent and although I used two different showers during our stay I never fathomed how to get a constant flow of hot water, therefore this is a possible area that could be improved.
Places of interest: Matlock, Matlock Bath, Bakewell and Chatsworth House were a short car journey away, so it's situated in an ideal spot for exploring Derbyshire. Additionally as it's situated on the side of a valley the views of the surrounding woodland looked fab. I would recommend this site to others, especially families and would be happy to stay there again as it was great value for money.

Great setting as right next to woods for exploring, canal and river in walking distance through the woods, as is Matlock Bath so you can avoid the traffic on busy periods. Nice open fields for tents so loads of room even on bank holiday weekend. Very far to the toilet/shower block from the camping fields, although facilities themselves were fairly clean, modern and with plenty of hot water.
Would definitely go back here for the location.

Just got back from Birchwood Farm after a short break over the Bank Holiday weekend. It's a picturesque location above the Derwent Valley, with some very pleasant views of the surrounding countryside, and boarded on the north side by a wood. The site, at least the overflow field that we pitched on, had a slope to it - but nothing that was unbearable.
There are three camping fields and an overflow field right at the top end of the site. Next to the farm there is a barn for children to play on and a decent looking playground. There is a shop, although we did not go in so cannot comment on how well it's stocked. There is also a washing up area.
The toilets were okay, pretty clean and modern, and clean for a bank holiday. The showers were okay - there are four shower rooms - really just a shower, and an area to stand and dry yourself, which are accessed separately from the toilets. They are also free to use. Water pressure is apparently a problem. Overall they're nowhere near class leading, but neither were they the worst I've ever seen.
The site was very busy - as expected on a bank holiday - but there was little noise after about 10:30. The pitches in the lower fields were marked and had EHU, but in the upper fields, it was a case of pitch where you like. As we went in a group of four families, this really suited us. None of the pitches were really tightly packed, and this meant a far bit of room for the kids to play.
So, in summary, a good, clean and quiet site despite being very busy!

We arrived around 6.00pm and booked in for one night. We found the staff very helpful and friendly (unlike the reception we received at the nearby Haytop site)in spite of the fact that the site was very busy
We basically just slept over so did not explore the site much but found the toilets and showers very clean (and this was a busy bank holiday weekend) and the water was lovely and hot.

Just got back from Birchwood farm and thought it deserves a review. The owners I found to be very friendly and helpful, they advised us on the dog friendly places to visit and the woods was a great place to walk him. We had booked 2 pitches with electric hookup , (not normally used) these where next to a greenhouse where you can buy flowers from the lady there. The main camp field at the far end of the site does slope quite a bit but the pitches with EHU are more level. There's a nice playground for kids but beware if you camp down there it does get noisy, kids being kids just having a good time. There's a small shop which sells the basics and the toilets are clean and tidy, the showers are great, hot and free, these are at the end of the toilet block and not actually in it. The only thing I would change is the indoor table tennis area this does need updating , but having said that it didn't bother the kids who played on them .The site is good for venturing out with Matlock not to far and there's a lovely walk through the woods, down to the canal then towards Cromford . On the whole loved this site and will be going back, at £13 a night with electric over the bank holiday I would recommend to anyone.

I took my family to the site this month for their first camping trip and I have to say they loved it.
The view from the site is breathtaking. Everyone there was totally friendly, my children made friends from the 1st day there, even though my eldest seemed to talk to the cow on the farm more than she did people and they all want to go again.
My Wife found it tranquil and relaxing and can't wait to return for another stay and the best thing for us is the site is pretty local so it is great for a last minute plan.
I recommend the site and will go again.
The Facilities on site are male and female toilet blocks and showers there is a small site shop and a children's play area it is surrounded by lovely countryside.
If you want a night time drink (Alcohol) it is a case of bring your own which I prefer as it keeps site fees down.
