This is our third visit to Birchwood Farm. We only live 7 miles away but do so enjoy it. Carol the owner is a lovely lady aways making you feel very welcome. She can't do enough for you to make your stay enjoyable.
The site itself is first class. There are hardstanding and grass pitches with electric hook up and water supply next to the pitch or very close by. The are also large fields for tents. The site is kept clean and tidy at all times. There are two toilet blocks and a shower block which are kept spotless. The showers are on taps and not the annoying push button type and even during busy periods there is always plenty of hot water.
The reception also incorporates a shop which stocks an excellent variety of food and caravan/camping accessories.
We will always return to Birchwood not only because of what I have mention above but also it is excellent value for money.
We've already booked two more visits in August but can't see us waiting until then before we return

Well priced and a great site to stay on. We had full service pitch which was £18 a night. Weather and scenery is excellent.
The site is set on a working farm enclosed by pine tress (note: TV does not work on this site no signal at all)
Good walks all around to whatstandwell, cromford, matlcok.
On site shop is well stocked.
The site could have done with a bit of a tidy up ie. Wooden pallets left at the side of pitch. Rocks not moved from paths and roads. Leaves covering waste toilet and had to move them to empty my toilet. The showers are hit and miss - the first shower only came out cold, the 2nd one had split and went everywhere, the 3rd attempt worked ok. Lampposts with no lights on the end so its all dark.
Overall the site is cheap, its scenery is beautiful but site could do with a tidy up with pot holes filled in on the road leading to the site. Its been 5 yrs since we last visited and it seems tired and not as well looked after.
We will return as we like the area but hope the site gets its heart back.

Originally planned to stop from wednesday til sunday but stayed and made a week of it.
Surrounded by woodland with a drive through the woods to the site started the holiday.
We had camped there a few times before on the tent fields but this was the first time on the hook ups (due to taking our 7 month old with us for the first time)
Staff were courteous and helpful and got us to our pitch without hassle.
we were in the top hook up grass field.
There's a main toilet block with 4 lovely hot showers which are free to use, a male and female toilet at the side of the 'pot washing' area near the reception and another shower and toilet block on the static van area (shhhh) though I never went to those.
The toilets were clean and the showers hot. The cubicles were a tad small but hey we are camping.
Baby changing in the mens toilet.
Small good priced shop on site with basics and equipment in stock.
Childrens play area and loads of 'dens' for the kids to play in.
Lighting in all the hook up sites from what I saw and plenty of fire points.
Numerous drinking water points on the site as well.
Overall view is that I loved the site.
Plenty of walks from the site to the High Peak trail or down into Cromford.
I particularly liked heading up through the moors to the top end of Black Rock with the dogs, woods person at heart I guess but I spent a couple of mornings taking in the views from my chair while smelling bacon cooking.
If you take the right out of the entrance and head towards Wirksworth, there's a pub called The Malt Shovel that does lovely food.
Plenty of takeaways from the nearby Wirksworth too.
As to the negatives to the site, well let me just say I grew up and have done a lot of camping in the woods. Just canvas and a fire kind of thing so bare that in mind.
The forest road down to the site is a bit bumpy and a few pot holes but with careful driving its no problem(the owners were doing repairs at various times) and the car and heavy trailer made it up and down with no stress.
I had read a few reviews on about noise from nearby campers but we didn't find it a problem. A few football games and some partying teachers enjoying themselves but everything quietened down by 11pm.
Most of the grass pitches are quite sloped but with a bit of common sense where you pitch combined with using levellers on the tables etc. Cured that problem.
All the caravans I saw had use some exotic caravaning folk law devices for levelling the vans so I would suggest any 'vanners' to take a few blocks of wood and chocks etc.
We had some heavy rain while we were there with local flooding but the field we were on didn't have any problem with drainage.
£17. 50 a night with electric hook up and two dogs with a vango diablo 600 tent. Cant go far wrong with that for me.
Will be going back that's for sure

Birchwood is a much larger campsite than we would usually use, we try to avoid sites with children's play area's and shops however I really enjoyed my week camping here during the Easter holidays. It was soon obvious what you get for the extra bit of money (not that this place is expensive, it's just that we go as cheap as possible) with warm showers, a washing machine and tumble dryer, a hairdryer and a really reasonably priced shop open till 9 at night.
Staff at the site were great, very friendly if you spoke to them but also happy to leave you to it. The toilet blocks were basic and functional - it's really handy to have two different toilet blocks - and there is an outdoor washing up area.
Although the ground isn't flat it is really easy to pitch a tent as the ground is soft and pretty much stone free. Slopes can be pretty much avoided at this time of year but might be more difficult in the height of summer.
As others have pointed out, the site is down a rough track however my little Citigo coped fine so as long as you go steady there shouldn't be a problem and I think the drive through the trees adds to the sense of adventure!
This campsite is a real gem if you enjoy walking, it has The High Peak Trail, The Midshires Way, The Derwent Heritage Way and Cromford Canal Path close by as well as many smaller local footpaths.
There are lots of attractions to visit locally such as Heights of Abraham, Cromford Mill, The Tramway Museum and of course The Peak District.
Overall a fantastic location with pretty views and everything you would need for a successful camping trip - would definitely recommend.

This was my first visit to this site, but unfortunately I can't say that I'd go again.
Approach to the site is via a badly potholed driveway, which if we'd taken our caravan I wouldn't have been happy to drive down.
Check in was easy enough. It was £14. 50 for the night in the tent field with no electric, which in hindsight is too expensive for what you get.
The site is split into different areas for EHU and no EHU.
We were in the tent field, which is very sloping, to the point where one of the dinner plates slid down the table and left dinner on the floor. It also made sleeping difficult as you spent half the night having to move the air bed back to the top of the tent.
I'm sure the toilets must get cleaned at some point, but from the state they were in for the time we were there I'm not sure how often it actually happens.
The site has a no noise after 11pm rule, but unfortunately it's not enforced, so we had to endure loud music and shouting to 2. 30am.
The only positives I can think of are the well stocked shop, the grass is kept well maintained, and the there's some nice walks from the site.

This site is accessed via a narrow, potholed road through a forest. Arrival was handled efficiently and warmly and we were directed to the pitching area which was in a field past the ehu and caravan pitches.
We had been warned that the pitching area was on a slope but didn't quite expect it to be as sloping as it was - most of the more flat areas had been taken already so we ended up on quite a slope - so much so that the sleeping bags were slipping down the tent!
That being said the site is in a wonderful location with plenty of space for the kids to play and have fun, the toilets and showers are cleaned frequently and the shop is well stocked.
We plan to return at some point.

We stayed at this lovely site for 3 nights and the only fault I could find was with the showers, or rather lack of them, there are only 4 showers for the whole of the camp to use, nowhere near enough ! They are so small as well and I didn't like the fact that they are unisex. The site itself is very nice and the views are fabulous, what a shame the owners are prepared to let the showers spoil it. A sparkling new shower block would make all the difference, also toilets need attention, not very clean at all.

Just come back from weekend stay here it's the first time we have ever been here but it was recommended by some friends the lane down is a little bumpy but if you take your time it really isn't that bad. On arrival was shown where our pitch was which was in the first field next to children's play area and across from the reception/shop the field does have a slight slope but again it's not a problem.
The site itself is fantastic and has to be one of the pleasantest we've stayed at kids can play till there hearts content and the pitch costs are very reasonable considering location and views. On reading other reviews before we booked about not been enough showers yes there are only 4 but if you plan around the usual busy times there isn't any problem. One thing I would say is tv reception is very poor ( or was on our pitch and surrounding ones) but we were rite at bottom next to the wood.
All in all a fantastic weekend we will visit again.

4 adults and 1 toddler stayed for 2 nights from Mid afternoon on Friday in our large, family tent with EHU and considering the site is close to the A6, you wouldn't know as its so peaceful!
The approach to the site is riddled with potholes and is quite narrow so care is needed in case anyone is coming the other way.
The site is clean and tidy but the toilet and shower blocks would benefit from a good deep clean.
There is a little play area for kids (probably more suitable for 3years+, but my 2 1/2 year old got round with a bit of help) and a well stocked shop that is reasonably priced.
Was a bit disappointed that the 'no noise after 11pm' rule wasn't enforced, even though 1 particular group seemed to go on until around 2am.
The biggest drawback with the site is that most of the pitches are on a slant but if you pitch up right, this is easily overcome.
With all that said, this site is still worth a visit and we will definitely be returning at some point.
