Was not to sure what to expect with the mixed reviews, but if you are a normal down to earth person it does exactly what it says. Nice steady option at a steady price, some noise, but it was the bank holiday and felt lived in.
3 fields to pick from, no marked pitches so can pick the best spot available, all fields slightly slopping but bearable.
On site shop very good selection and price. Toilets, showers and wash up area clean and practical, showers are limited to 5 on the whole campsite, but if you work round the popular times never encountered a problem.
The high peak trial is only a short walk away so this was excellent, no other facilities in real walking distance, so depends what your looking for on your trip

Some of the reviews for this site point to the inadequate facilities. I would support that view, we went in October for 2 nights and the site was almost empty so the facilities were good enough, however I do not think they could cope with a full site. On top of this the toilets, showers and washing up sinks were not cleaned during our 2 night stay. There was no toilet paper in the toilets and this was not replaced while we were there.
We were charged £17 per night, which seemed OK but I have just checked their website which states a charge of £15.50, so it looks as if we were overcharged.
On the positive side the location is first class being off the road and about 10minutes walk through woodland to High Peak junction and the Cromford canal. May use the site again on account of the location.

We booked this campsite for a week stay and I must say that upon arriving the view and first impressions were good, however they did make a mistake on our booking but this was very quickly rectified. Once fully pitched we walked around the campsite for a better look at the facilities, I was quite disappointed by the shower and toilets, there were only 4 toilets and 4 showers for the entire campsite even though we considered it quite a decent size campsite and unfortunately these were not in the best condition.
The small shop was lovely, had everything you needed along with very reasonable prices. Our 2 children liked the park, however there have been a few incidences of older children picking on the younger ones but this was sorted relatively quickly. The grounds are very well kept however the slope did become a problem throughout the week.
Agreeing with another member on noise, we did have a problem on the final night of the stay with a caravan having music on very loud until well after midnight even though there is a policy to stop the noise after 11, I feel more wardens should be in place or at least a number to contact, we had a look around the office area for a number in case of an emergency as such and non were displayed.
I am afraid to say that even though we had a nice holiday it would not be a site we will return to.

What a noisy site! I know it was a Bank Holiday, but there seemed to people shouting, dogs barking, kids screeching, tellys blaring in tents and music at some point throughout our 2 night stay.
There are 3 large camping fields which are all on slopes, the only flat bit is by the amenities and for caravans. Anyone camping in the furthest field had quite a trek to the loos.
There are 2 toilet blocks each for men and ladies, however only 4 showers for everyone, nowhere near enough for the number of people who were camping. They are at the end of one of the toilet blocks, in the open, so that meant a 30 minute queue in the rain. They are not very big, but adequate, water was nice and hot but didn't drain away very well. OH reported that there was no hot water in the gents taps for a shave though.
There is a very well stocked shop, play area and table tennis tables in a barn. Lovely walks through the woods from the campsite to High Peak Trail, Black Rocks and so on, but I'm sure the person who camped by the way through the hedge wished he'd chosen another pitch!
There is so much to do in the area, but if I was to go back I would look for another site

This was our first visit to Birchwood Farm. First impressions were very good (the kids loved the 'scary road' through the trees!
We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. All fields were very well kept with no litter on the site at all.
Facilities were very good too, the free showers were clean and tidy and the toilets were spotless.
What impressed us most though was the prices in the on-site shop. One expects (begrudgingly) to have to pay premium prices on-site but it is not the case at all here. The shop stocks just about everything you could need / forget to bring with you (in our case - drinking mugs) at very keen prices.
The kids enjoyed the playground, and the post-11pm no noise policy is adhered to by everyone on site.
All in all a very nice site. We will definitely come back.

Stayed at this site for just a couple of nights but would have been more than happy to have stayed on for longer.
Good facilities and a decent on site shop. Four showers to use which are free. Good toilet block and wash room and a laundry room, £2 for the washer and 20p for the drier, both good sized machines and 20p was enough to dry towels after showering.
Site wasn't that busy on our stay but we picked the week before the kids break up from school hoping it wasn't going to be too crowded on our first stay here. The large children's play area must make this site popular with families with younger children?!
£15. 50 inc EHU was good value. Pitches do have a slope in places but this aids the drainage which certainly would be needed this year!
More hooks in the showers is the only thing I think the site needs.

We have been using this site for many years. We now take our daughter who is 7 yrs and she loves it too. We only go for weekends 1 or 2 nights but because of the location we fill our time during the day with walks through the woods into Cromford and the pub!
The facilities are adequate, toilets are clean but in bad weather or busy bank holidays they do tend to get soiled. The showers are hot but there location could be better. 4 showers to the entire campsite is not ideal especially over a hot bank holiday!
The owners are always friendly and will do their best to put things right. The children's park is well maintained, however older children do sometimes take over but a word from the warden sorts this out! The shop is well stocked with day to day essentials. Noise can be a problem but over a busy weekend with lots of children running around you can't expect total silence and if you speak to the warden he will have a quiet word!We love this site and have just booked for May 2013.
We will continue to use this site as will our friends.

We stayed on this site during the first Bank Holiday in May. The site was fairly full. The facilities were clean and adequate. I feel that the showers could do with an update.
Our pitch was on a slope and required a lot of blocks to try & get the caravan level. We would suggest that the people who own the site 'police' it more as we were near others who 'partied' with load music which continued until after 11. 00 at night.
The site is quite a walk into Matlock/local shops. A site that would be ok as a short stay/base from which to explore the local countryside. The price was £15. 50 per night with EHU.

We have just returned from a 3 night stay. The staff / owners are extremely friendly. The site is excellent value for money. There is direct access to the High Peak Trail - ideal for bikes and walking. Toilets and showers were clean. Showers were warm and not the push button type. The toilet block and shower blocks were not heated though. If you are on the hardstanding some pitches require longer water and waster pipes - nothing major. It was quiet when we was there which did make it feel spacious. We will be returning next year due to its location and value for money and the views. One thing to be aware of is you need a satellite dish if you want to watch TV as even with the aerial extremely high we could not get a TV signal and most people appeared to have dishes. Meant we caught up on some DVDs with the children.

This is our sixth visit to Birchwood Farm and it just keeps getting better. We only went for the night but wished we had longer.
We took the walk through the woods to Matlock it takes about 1 hour but it is worth it, we did get a taxi back to the edge of the woods after sampling some of the beers at the beer festival. Can't wait to return next year
For those of you that don't know there is a further toilet and shower block down by the static caravans. As many campers don't know about these they often don't have any queues for them.
