Set in beautiful Derbyshire countryside, ideally placed to visit Matlock and Bakewell etc, Barn farm must have been a working farm at some point and has now been converted to a dedicated campsite.
It consists of 3 fields - 2 'normal' sized and one massive one - seriously, huge. The biggest one is only open during peak seasons and weekends. The fields are well kept, with good drainage but they do slope! In fact, on both of the smaller fields, you'll have a job finding a spot without any slope. It's a shame because it spoils an otherwise almost perfect campsite!
The toilets and showers are very well kept, indeed the newer separate shower block has shower rooms like your bathroom at home, big enough for the whole family to shower together. There are odd toilet blocks and older shower rooms dotted about the site and even a 'rugby' style communal shower room in the toilet blocks themselves (which is normally empty when everything else is busy and you can have it to yourself!).
There is plenty of washing up space and even a modest games room. Everything is kept clean and tidy - you really can't fault the facilities.
A family of peacocks wandering around completes the idyliic scenery over the hills.
There is a village shop within walking distance and two pubs. We ate twice at the one at the bottom of the road - very friendly and good food and beer!
Upon enquiring, we weren't offered the opportunity to book and were just told 'oh, there's always plenty of room!'. Now this was actually true when we arrived, and we managed to camp in the second of the smaller fields on flattish ground, but what we weren't told was that there was a Pagan festival going on a few days later. This meant that the big field slowly became packed, leading to the two smaller fields filling with everyone else.
Actually, it worked out fine for us. It made for a somewhat party atmosphere, especially when the drumming started in a barn in the evening, but it was all quiet by 10:30 and was actually quite fun. But it did hint at what the site might be like during a BH when it's busy - the facilities started straining with that many people using them and I'm amazed at the angles people were prepared to pitch their tents at!
To sum up, an almost perfect site, if the site is not too packed and you find a flat pitch. Unfortunately you can't book so this is going to be a bit of a lottery. Hint: Ask them if there are any festivals on at the time!

We picked this site due to the good reviews, we weren't disappointed, there were 19 of us in 6 tents, we arrived around 5.30pm on a Friday and were directed to the big field (open at weekends) We managed to pitch in one corner of the field with plenty of space. Up side was it was fairly flat, shortish walk to the toilets/showers, down side we were near the very noisy peacocks, ear plugs needed I think!
There are plenty of showers and toilets, the new block has the best showers. While we were there the wasn't any hot water for washing up. We were very lucky with the weather as it was the freaky hot weekend we choose, the kids all had great fun on the big field having a water fight, so as others have said, not a quiet site and it certainly was packed full on the Saturday with D of E kids, but the site still quetened down by 10-10.30pm.
The small catering van on site for breakfasts was popular with our group too. We are already planning to go back again next year, lovely site

Stopped for Friday and Saturday night at the end of July/beginning of August weekend.
Well managed site, plenty of staff around, very clean and as mentioned never at a loss for a loo roll. Showers were some of the best I've seen on a campsite.
Lovely views, a couple of the fields were quite hilly so you may have to do some searching for a level pitch. But there's always something you can roll up to make your table steady etc!
The site has a lively feel to it, while we were there we had entertainment in the form of Pagen's drumming and a live band outside one of the barns. Both nights curfew of 10.30pm was adhered to. Obviously this may not appeal to everyone but we enjoyed it.
We will go back !

This site is in a beautiful location with stunning views over the Derbyshire countryside.
The toilets and showers are luxuriously fitted but sadly were not kept as clean and stocked as you would expect. The showers were flooded, which could be quite dangerous and there was often no soap or toilet paper in the loos. We were on the big field at the far end which was a long way from the facilities. We chose to pitch there as we thought it would be quiet - huge mistake! We were kept awake until nearly 3am by drunken youths playing football, shouting and starting cars. I was very scared and kept waiting for Security to arrive but they never came - their main job seemed to be checking we had paid!
Maybe we caught them on a bad weekend with a shortage of staff and they were perhaps busier than they expected.
Would not return to this site, particularly with children as there are no facilities for them except an expensive Games Room.

We had a great time at barn farm. We were there for a single night, and there were 3 families with 6 children under 3. The buildings and facilities were fantastic, and the food cart was a welcome surprise for evening and breakfast solutions. The park is fantastic for young children and the campsite itself had a great number of other families with whom we spoke.
Unfortunately during the night there was some sort of 24hour rave and loud, heavy beating/bass music was played throughout the night into late morning. And we're not talking background music, the floor was thumping.
In the morning we used the wash facilities which are very clean and the shower water was very warm. The local area is beautiful and there seems to be a lot of great walks.
We will certainly return to the site again, which is perfect for families and adults alike. We'll just attempt to find out dates for raves/parties in advance and avoid!

Came home yesterday from a fantastic weekend at Barn Farm. It was my first ever camping experience with my family, (husband and a 4 year old and 16 month old). I can not stress enough how fantastic this camp site is, we pitched up in the big field, where at first I was a bit reluctant too as some other reviews had said it was quite noisy etc. But we found this not the case at all. Just sounds of children and adults, lots of laughter and generally families having fun! There is a 10.30pm noise curfew and this really is the case, everyone respected this and it was lovely to hear the campsite come alive again at 7am.
All the staff were friendly and helpful and they all seemed to work really hard to keep the whole site really clean. Rubbish bags etc from the fields were collected at least every hour so no smelly rubbish bags were left by the bins. Although there is not an 'on site' convienience store there is a shop in the village which is only a 5 minute walk, however, there is a little stall which sells essential camping items and games for the little ones, and the staff there were so friendly too!
All in all we had a great weekend and we are already making plans to return before the summer is out!

Our first camping trip. We enjoyed our stay here lots to do with two children age 4 & 6.
We booked a hook up which had not been noted however we still managed to get one, we pitched in the dog field to get one, it appeared quieter in that field. The amenity's were clean and modern. We would advise anyone with young children to be watchful as its a very open site with rope swings and woods that little ones disappear into.

When we tried to book, we were put off a tad because we were told just to turn up but when we arrived we could see why.The place is enormous.
We were fortunate enough to find a spot away from the BIG field which is only used at weekends. Our spot was peaceful. It sounded very noisy over at the BIG field in the morning.
The facilities were good and well looked after. Plenty of them!
The staff worked hard to keep the site tidy on this busy weekend. Not sure I'd like to visit on a bank holiday, as I prefer things a bit quieter!
A beautiful village only 2 mins walk away with two lovely pubs.
Tried to book a pitch with EHU and they said that all were taken so we were surprised to see lots of unused hook-ups when we arrived.
Oh yes, almost forgot. Security patrolled at night, ensuring all was quiet! Great!

This site has good facilities, plenty of clean toilets and a chuck wagon. It seems geared towards families.
The village is a short walk away and has a couple of decent pubs.
On leaving we were asked for our receipt, which we had not been told that we would need to leave.
Plenty of noisy peacocks stroll around the site. There is a late bus back from Matlock too. The field that we were in has a bit of an incline. Reasonable base for exploring the peak.
Overall, recommended.

We stayed at this campsite in early July 2010. We were a big group getting together from all over the country (10 tents - 19 adults, 17 kids) and this site was one of the few who would accommodate us.
We thought it was fabulous. We camped at the bottom of the main field, there was a bit of a trek to the toilets but not too bad. There was plenty of room for us to pitch together and even though there were notices around saying no fires, we'd brought a fire pit and they were happy for us to use that.
The facilities were very clean, a separate unisex toilet block and then mens/ladies showers and toilet facilities. There was a games room which some of our older kids liked.
At night, it is patrolled by security - we were asked to keep the noise down a couple of times after 10.30pm (we weren't rowdy, just that there were so many of us!) but the security guard was lovely and we had a nice chat to him.
It's a 5 minute walk into the village which is very pretty. We ate at the Red Lion (we'd prebooked) and the food was very nice. We spent a nice afternoon sat outside in the sunshine! There is also a shop in the village. No cash point though, so make sure you take enough cash with you.
All in all, we really liked this campsite and will definitely return at some point.
