I have been going to this campsite every year now for about 3 years for the summer solstice and on most occassions it has been fantastic. The only faults I can say are: 1) When we paid to stay in the barn, people who were camping kept using our private toilet and shower, but I think this has now been resolved by people in the barn being given a key to keep these locked 2) Last year we were kept awake till 3am by some noisy campers who thought everyone would love to be kept awake by the sound of them playing guitar and singing. This really wound me up and I got virtually no sleep that night and felt like I had wasted money staying there when my reason for staying there was that I needed somewhere close to the stone circles to sleep. But after reading comments on this site, I will go and complain to the owners if this happens again when I return next weekend. I'm all for people having fun but there is a time and place for it and when there are lots of people there, some with children, it is selfish for people to keep others awake till dawn Toilets ok, fairly clean showers - I never use these are they are not private. Staff great so far

Used this site over the May Day bank holiday. Found the site itself to be really quite pleasant with plenty of space, with much of it fairly level. As the site filled up, however, all the level pitches soon went and all that was left were very sloping and only suitable for smaller tents, trailer tents with some form of leveling device, or Duke of Edinburgh scouts who seem to be willing to put up with anything.
The surrounding area was really pleasant and the village of Birchover has two (apparently) decent pubs within walking distance of the site. Good walks up on the hill behind the site are worth a go. Close to the bigger centres of Bakewell, Buxton and Ashbourne, the site is convenient to find and easy to obtain essential supplies.
Didn't see the owner but the lads collecting money on the site were very pleasant and helpful. The site is very much a working farm with the sights, sounds and smells to go with it! If you stay here you will either love or loath peacocks by the time you leave.
My only real criticisms are the pricing - £7.50 per person over 7 years old, and the quality of the washing, showering and dish washing facilities. At this price people will (and should) expect better. A number of shower heads in the separate cubicles didn't work properly and this is early on in the season. Communal showering isn't to everyone's taste either. At the prices being charged, things should be much, much better than this.
Would I go back? Only if I couldn't find anything else available in the area. (At £30 per night we couldn't afford to stay much longer than three nights anyway).

We stayed at Barn Farm for a couple of nights last April. It was a good basic site with plenty of room. The area by the toilets and showers was very busy and crowded, so we opted for one of the larger fields. This meant we had to spend a few minutes kicking some cow pats out of the way, but did mean we had lots of space, a fairly quiet corner, and wonderful views.
I think the site is popular with Duke of Edinburgh and suchlike. There was a group staying there whilst we were, who all seemed very pleasant and turned in at a reasonable time.
As other people have said, The Red Lion is a good pub, which served food whilst were there.
A great location for exploring the Peak District. We'd definitely stay there again.

I highly recommend barn farm, we had great weather and the staff are all very friendly. Barn Farm has some very noisy peacocks but it made our stay all the more unique. There were plenty of toilets to use, so there was never any queueing, there was a refreshment machine, payphone, washing up facilities, showers and a sauna. It is also situated next to Stanton moor which is great for walking on especially when the weather was so fine, It was an all round great campsite and will definitely be going again.

I find this a very nice campsite to stay on - love the sound of the peacocks, this makes the campsite quite unique. The views are lovely and the facilities are good (nice big toilet & shower block although showers not for the shy). We have always camped close to the farm buildings on the more closely mowed grass, the open fields look a bit rough under foot. I have never booked when using this campsite - the farmer is always friendly and welcoming and always manages to find us a good spot. He often walks around to check everyone is okay and is always on hand to iron out any problems (ie - any campers making too much noise or playing music too loud) but this is done without creating strict rules but by simply encouraging everyone to respect there fellow campers. Over-all I enjoy staying on this campsite - its friendly and laid back and has some unique qualities (ie - peacocks). Being in a village an advantage is having a pub nearby to stagger to. This is also a good base for checking out the Nine Ladies Stone Circle - with footpaths leading from the campsite.

Nice site in very beautiful location with pretty village a few minutes walk away. It was very busy when we arrived on the Friday evening so we chose to camp in the overflow field which was a little rough and ready (and exposed to high winds as we soon found out!). The campsite's facilities are quite basic but they've recently installed a free sauna which was great when the weather was pretty miserable outside. On the whole OK if you're prepared to rough it a bit (which we were) but overpriced compared to other sites in the Peaks.

A very nice basic site - plenty of toilets, shower block, washing up and laundry facilities - all housed in authentic stone farm buildings. I liked the site as it is reasonably small and has a rural feel - it didn't have that hectic and crowded 'holiday camp' feeling you can get on a very large site. Possibly slightly pricey at 7.50 pppn though. Was slightly concerned about being woken up early by the peacocks but they seemed to like a lie in too! Lovely views of the surrounding 'rolling countryside' (maybe not 'world class', but still lovely :) I didn't notice it being particularly muddy as noted on a previous review (but anyway its a field?!?). Get there early to bag a space at peak times as a good part of the site is on a slope. The nearby red lion pub had a reasonable choice of beer and pub grub (very tasty veg sausage and mash) but they did stop serving earlier than their advertised time, so get there early if you want to eat.

I feel bad as there are so many good reviews but I can only think some of my fellow campers have very low expectations of facilities and cleanliness. Stayed over BH weekend and showers etc were not cleaned at all! When a member of staff was asked about this he said it had been to busy to clean. Woken up every night of a five night stay by riff raff. Who can wash up in cold water?

Fantastic site if you like the open countryside and walking. The owner Gilbert is a very friendly chap and a little eccentric, he invited us in for a welcoming cup of coffee and played us his favourite song . '' Brown girl in the ring'' by Boney M . The pub which is about 5 minutes walk away, although quite nice, will not prepare any food, not even a sandwich, after bang on the stroke of 9pm. Stanton Moor is well worth a visit and whilst we were there, a group of ''friends of the earth'' were campaigning to save the area from the quarry men and there was a caravan perched high up in one of the trees' their mess, left a lot to be desired though. We will definitely be returning, even if only to see Gilbert.

We stayed at the Barn Farm campsite on Friday 2nd of June 2006 for one night and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. £15 for the night for the two of us. Large open fields to camp on so always a place to find a quiet spot although the large field is on a big slope. The toilets and showers were clean and tidy at all times with good washing up facilities. The views from the site over the dales were amazing! Watch out for the peacocks which roam the site, they are friendly enough though. Matlock bath and the heights of Abraham are only a short drive away and well worth a visit offering shops, restaurants, bars and activities for all ages
