Date of Visit: May 2013 Unit:  Trailer Tent
Reviewer: Craig9173 7 reviews from this member

I booked well in advance for this trip, it was organised with friends.

We turned up on the Saturday afternoon of the bank holiday weekend. This was a mistake, especially with a trailer tent and having booked a 9 night stay. Why? because there were no spaces left big enough for our tent on the standard fields, and the overflow field has restrictions on when it can be used. We ended up wedged under some big trees. We almost didn't stay because of it. I had made a big point about organising a group of us when I phoned to reserve a plot. The fact that we were a trailer tent had not been given any consideration (despite me making a fuss about wanting a hook up) when we booked. And there was literally only one tiny bit of the campsite left for us to stay on. We were offered 3 spots, one far too steep to level the trailer, one was blocking in 5 caravans (they wouldn't have been able to drive around the tent as it would have blocked the drive) and finally under the trees wedged in by the front lawn. This last one we took.

We did stay for all 9 nights and enjoyed the split personalities of the campsite.

On the bank holiday weekend there was an on site chip van and a breakfast van. There were around 200 tents on site and a lot of noise till gone 11 from people having mini parties. Tents were pitched everywhere, even on the lawns of the farm house.

If you come here you have to like peacocks. They too are noisy, if its light they are noisy. If people move around, they are noisy. Very beautiful and interesting, but noisy. Google the shrieking sound of a peacock.

The staff were always super helpful and very friendly. They kept the place very clean, the showers always had oodles of hot water. Even with the crazy numbers of people over the bank holiday the site still coped with portaloo blocks etc.

During the rest of the half term, the site had about 10 to 20 tents and caravans in it. This was blissful, the site is in a beautiful spot. Its not near any main roads, and only a 3 minute walk into Birchover and its 2 pubs. Book ahead for food on busy nights.

Its a great spot for exploring the peak district, we visited the caverns near castleton, the town of bakewell and all the attractions around matlock, not to mention walking along dove dale and over the stepping stones.

We will come back again, but we wouldn't arrive on a bank holiday Saturday. You can see our negative comments at the top, and they were so good, the spot is so beautiful and the facilities top notch, we will be back.

Good campsite, especially for families with the games room and play area.

No charge for showers and at less than £20 for a family of four could not be cheaper.

As per other comments, bit of a free for all for pitches with people leaving for the day only to find their car space gone and replaced with 2 tents when they get back.

Overall, a good campsite and would be happy to go back but probably not on a bank holiday weekend!

Our first camping trip since I was in guides (many years ago!) to see if we liked it and gladly we did! A friendly face on arrival who told us about the different fields we could pitch in. We drove round the adults only but there were lots of flies about so we chose the next field which was the family field which was quite quiet early afternoon. We pitched up with plenty space between us and the next tent, we had to drive out to pick up a new bike and on our return someone had pitched really close and we had to squeeze in to park. The field had filled up by his point and looking back the adults only field would have been a better option but that was our choice.

The toilets/shower block very clean, this was one of my main reasons why I haven't camped for years as I didn't think I would like using them but had chosen the site after reading the reviews and have to say they were right and it has only made me want to camp more! Good local pubs which we used the first night, the second we cooked in. Didn't have EHU in the field we were in and this would be the only drawback.

We would return and would certainly recommend this site, but for ourselves it is just that bit too big as we preferred a smaller site that we have since been to, but for families and groups this would be perfect.

Just visited for a weekend. Paid £7. 50 per night which I thought was very good value for all the facilities available. The place was bustling, but the bins were emptied regularly, loos were always acceptably clean, and there was plenty of loo roll, liquid soap in dispensers etc. The weekend bacon/sausage butty van was a welcome luxury! The little shop came in handy for a few bits too, and sells some toys as well as food and drink.

I was lucky to find a flat pitch at 3pm; field 2 seemed to have the most level ground, but became very busy, filling up fast from mid Friday afternoon. Weekenders wishing to pick a nice spot there would need to come early. There was one very loud, boisterous group near me, but most people settled at a reasonable hour, having young families - lots of children on site having a good time. The other field suggested to me was sloping, all except for one end nearest the buildings.

One thing over which the site had no control was the live music at the pub (Druid Inn or Red Lion, not sure) on Saturday night! I thought it could have been someone with a karaoke machine in the field, it was that loud, as the site was downwind. Other than that, a very pleasant family-friendly site, with good views over fields and hills in a scenic area.

We have just returned from a 4 day (midweek) stay here and we thought it was fantastic. We have never braved taking our 2 under 5's camping so we tried here to see if we could enjoy it and we weren't disappointed.

The site is lovely for views and facilities, it's just quiet enough but also with kids for ours to play with and a great playground. Toilets and showers were really clean and we never had to queue and our pitch was good (alot of the site does slope, but we were there when it wasn't really busy so got a good spot).

We did get a rude awakening on our first morning from a very loud peacock which sounded like a foghorn walking by (at 6am), but thankfully he didn't do it again on subsequent mornings. Also the shop didn't have milk when we tried to buy it on our first morning.

The Red Lion pub served good food and was just a short walk away (they serve good real ales too). The walk up to the 9 ladies stone circle leads from the site and takes in lovely scenery over the moors, and we enjoyed day trips to Matlock and the Peak railway on a steam train too.

We will definitely return here and can highly recommend it for families and couples alike.

Fantastic campsite, my family and I have just enjoyed a 2 night stay here. Beautiful surroundings and very good good value for money. The facilities were 5 star, exceptionally clean and maintained, hot water, showers, hair dryer & plugs for straighteners all free, absolute bonus.

Little village store up the road, selling basics plus store on site, Bakewell centre & Matlock centre both 5 miles away in opposite directions. Beautiful town very picturesque.

We will definitely be staying here again.

Lovely campsite.

Barn Farm is a pretty camp site, complete with peacocks, excellent facilities and helpful staff - but it can get very (too) noisy at weekends.

The shower blocks/toilet facilities were the best we had ever seen on a camp site. The water was always hot and the showers were powerful and spacious. They were cleaned very regularly. There is also a shop on site and a hot food van at weekends. Hookups are available for caravans and there were good recycling (although not cardboard/paper) and waste facilities.

The site has ample play facilities for children - with a playground, space for ball games and a games room. It also has some friendly alpacas in a nearby field which keeps kids entertained for a few minutes.

The village has two pubs with a reasonable selection of food on offer. We enjoyed our meal at the Red Lion. There is also a village shop.

Unfortunately, we were camping at the same time as a very inconsiderate group of campers who kept everyone else up well into the early hours. We certainly wouldn't return at a weekend or with young children. If you want a bustling campsite with first class facilities, Barn Farm is perfect.

If you want a cosy campsite this is the place to be. You need to arrive early to your campsite as it is a free for all in relation to pitches. We stayed on a weekend when the field was pretty full, therefore it was particularly noisy. The toilet/shower facilities are not cleaned regularly, on the first night the toilets ran out of toilet paper. The site chose on a very busy weekend to clean the showers and the toilets at 8. 30-9. 00 in the morning (the busiest time). There was insufficient facilities for the number of campers on site so this led to queues for the facilities. On a plus side the views are lovely however, be prepared to be awoken by cows in the neighbouring field. The local towns of Bakewell and Matlock are close by and well worth a visit. The shop is well stocked with both essentials and food. The site is value for money and worth going to if you have a large group who want to camp close together.

Spent a lovely weekend at this campsite

Great site with lots of space. We camped in the weekend field (this doesn't have electric hookups) giving the kids plenty of space to run about.

Lovely shower rooms and never had a problem with queues.

Wonderful for kids with a play area/games room and lots of space. And very handy for Matlock / Bakewell. Local pubs looked really nice but didn't try them. Hope to go again soon.

This campsite is wonderful; spotless toilet, shower and wash-up facilities. Beautiful views, good camping ground, lots of lovely walks and two pubs close by.

The staff are very friendly and there is security on site but they leave you to your own devices most of the time. The peacocks, alpacas and other wildlife are real characters and enhance the camping experience.

I would recommend this site to anyone, and myself and fiancée intend to visit again soon.
