As we wound our way deeper into the most beautiful countryside we felt we had made the right choice. We called in after a quick preliminary phone call to see if they had space, no problem they said. It was a Wednesday, middle of the school spring bank holiday week and the site had lots and LOTS of space, and it was beautiful in a beautiful location. We found Barn Farm easily as we carefully drove through the village of Birchover. We booked in for four nights and the chatty cheerful chap on reception gave some sweeties from a bowl to the kids, they liked it straight away.
We chose a cosy corner in the main field with a spectacular view, but this was soon marred by the distinct smell of dog poo wafting by with each gentle breeze, we re-located to the opposite corner, and, whilst almost finished putting up our large family tent a boy, aged about 12 casually allowed his dog to poo approximately 3 metres from the side of our tent. I politely asked him to take it with him, but he disappeared. I disposed of it myself.
The showers and toilets are impeccable, fantastic in fact, and the staff are visibly busy cleaning and re-stocking the facilities on a regular basis, there is also regular drinking water taps located around the site. We went for a meal in one of the two village pubs, and enjoyed a lovely family stroll back through the village to the campsite, to be met by the strong smell of more dog poo, this time it was too dark to find it. In the morning I spotted it as it was being sniffed at by another dog and was able to dispose of it, now pretty fed up but fortunately this didn't happen again for a couple of days.
The site is perfectly located for a drive to Matlock Bath. On the Thursday we took the kids to Gullivers Kingdom and the Heights of Abraham. When we arrived back at the site the clientèle numbers had increased probably 5 times whilst we were away. By Friday night it was very very busy and more like a mini rock festival than a camp site and we couldn't help thinking that many people were using camping as a means of cheap accommodation for a boozy weekend away from home. There was a lot of noise Friday and Saturday night, and kids running around shouting until late whilst adults where sitting in large groups drinking and bellowing across the field to each other, and even though having said this we still found our immediate neighbours to be very friendly albeit very noisy. We had hoped for peaceful evenings over a *quiet* glass of wine whilst our 3 and 5 year olds slept, but this was impossible to achieve with kids, frisbees, and footballs darting back and forth only feet from the porch of our tent until approximately 11pm.
On the Sunday we woke up to the strong smell of dog poo again as people were emptying their dogs before driving them back home, it is of course possible the dog poo smell was exacerbated by the exceptionally warm weather, but why can't everybody bag it as it is still dangerous to small children? To sum up, beautiful site, kind of rugged, but smart at the same time, with fantastic staff, just too crowded, and a little to much like a holiday camp at weekends.

Had the best weekend yet. The site was well tended, The staff were very nice and helpful, Toilets and showers were spot on, The only small let down was the hot water ran out on Sunday at about 11.00. But great location, two good pubs within 5 minutes walk. Excellent location for walking and cycling. The views are stunning.
Sat nav takes you to the centre of the village but it is well sign posted to the site so you cant go wrong.
Oh yes the village shop is open from 7 to7 and is reasonably well stocked.
You can also get a full English for £4.50 so if you don't fancy cooking then it's well worth it.
Will definitely go again.

Stayed for two nights (Fri & Sat) in mid June, site is well run and caters for almost everyone, from groups of kids on school outings to families. Facilities were clean and always plenty of toilet paper and handwash, showers nice and hot.
We arrived at around 7pm on Friday so all of the best pitches were taken, we didn't fancy the main field as it seemed to accommodate the school groups etc so we chose one of the other fields that unfortunately both slope and this explains why the tents in gentler sloping parts of the fields were packed in.
Location wise this site is excellent, just a couple of minutes walk and you're in the village which has a small shop selling all the essentials and a couple of pubs serving food - we tried the food in The Red Lion which was really good and only £5 for a main with generous portions, highly recommended. The towns of Matlock Bath and Bakewell are both close by and the Tissington Trail also a short drive away with nice flat cycle / walking paths.
On the downside we found the site to be too noisy for our liking, we returned from the pub at 10:45pm and felt like we'd walked onto a Haven site with teenagers running around screaming and adults sitting around drinking and shouting across the field to one another, not sure what the security guards are supposed to do in situations like this, not sure they even have a noise curfew in force? Also woken up at 3am by very loud music which went on for at least a couple of hrs.
Nice Site in a great location but perhaps not ideal for those wanting to relax in quiet surroundings.

A great camp site. The site was well organised, clean and plentiful toilets. Many shower areas which were regularly clean. Staff very friendly and could help with any queries.
Two nearby public houses which got very busy, best book if you intent to eat as gets booked very quickly.
It was a very busy weekend but still plenty of room. Loads of nearby walks / attractions for daytime activity.Considering it was the bank holiday weekend the noise level was quiet after 10 o'clock.
Great site and certainly will return

After a nasty trip up from Devon in hard rain and wind was a delight to arrive at barn farm for our final week.Reaching barn farm could be a little tricky due to the fact this site is on top of a hill, through a village where cars are parked on either side of the road and even opposite each other but was worth it for the view it offered.
We where pitched near the small shop they have on site run and owned by Sheila & Alan, the 2 nicest people you could ever want meet helped us out with so much information on where to go and what to do.
There where 3 units in our party which was small due to the fact the camping field was packed with a meet, must have been well over 50 units so rallies are not a problem here.
Showers where nice, when we found the right ones as my son and I went in the communal showers until we where told there where some other more private ones(lol)
Sauna on site which needed to be booked a few hrs in advance which the wife and I used on a few occasions and was lovely and hot.
We enjoyed this site that much we went back there for a new yrs meet also in 2009 only to get stuck going home due to a very quick but harsh snow storm.
Village shop with good rates and the pub served lovely food and ice cold beer.
Matlock and Bakewell nr by and lots of walks even one nr the site called 'The 9 ladies'
Will we return here,yes.

Been to this site twice this year and enjoyed it. The main field was full when there in August and there seemed to be a few large groups of teenagers, no problem with that but maybe you should know. Went again at the end of September and was in one of the smaller fields past reception and to the left, very good and looking forward to 2010 to go again. Also went to the Druid Inn and had a very nice meal. They also do takeaway bangers and mash etc for £6 if you can't be bothered to cook.

Ten of us and eight cars arrived at Barn farm and all managed to camp together. This was the best site we have been to this year, and will certainly be visiting again for a re union. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Plenty of toilets and showers all well kept. We had a short walk into the village where we came upon the Red Lion pub. What a gem! a brilliant campsite and a pub that's food was really really fabulous. Ale to match! Camra would have been proud. Maybe I should not write this review as the next time I want to book it will be full.

The campsite was very well maintained and there was plenty of space. It felt very spread out and spacious even though there were quite a few people there.
The toilets and showers were absolutely fine and there seemed to be a good number of cubicles and toilet roll!
The surrounding area is rather 'flat' (in comparison to the high peak) but there are some tough walks within easy distance and a walk direct from the campsite to some great views over the local towns.
Matlock is not far at all which is very useful for the supermarket and also for getting the train up from London on a Friday.
The Druid Inn Pub was a particularly good pub. The food was very good indeed - so much that we went back for lunch (the sandwich portions were very large and good value). The Red Lion was nice but not as impressive.
The local shop has everything you need for a good fry up after a night at said pubs!

Bank Holiday weekend was extremely busy, and the main camp field was full.
Great location and many good walks nearby. Birchover village only 2 minutes walk, and the local shop has everything you need. The first pub is the Red Lion and is very relaxed and friendly (welcomes walkers and dogs), The Druids Arms on the other hand is much less so.
Facilities on site are really good and staff very helpful.
If you want a camp site with no restrictions over where to pitch and have a large party who want to stay close together - this is the perfect site for you (suited us great). If you prefer regimented pitches then look elsewhere.

Just spent bank holiday weekend at barn farm me, him the three kids n the dog. Loved it! excellent, clean and well stocked facilities, helpful staff who are always on hand either emptying bins, cleaning toilets or helping people out! There is a local village shop just outside the site. The pub is nice although food is good it was a little expensive. We did not even get a look in at the Druids arms as tables were usually booked up, which was disappointing as it came highly recommended! there were a couple of walks we went on up the moor which was nice, the weather could have been better, far too windy, but at least it wasn't wet!
The only area where I think the site could be better is the introduction of a play area for the kids, there seemed to be lots of families with kids but they seemed to stick to there tents I think it would be beneficial to the site and the kids! Would definitely return to Barn Farm, it has a great friendly and safe atmosphere!
