We camped here last year and loved it and so we booked up to go back this year with relatives who have never been to Northumberland. Sadly I have to say the site was disappointing this year and didn't seem as nice as last year.

We arrived to quite a rude reception, sarcastic comments about our 'massive' tents and then snapped at for not following his unclear instructions when being shown to our pitch.

The site itself is nice, pretty big and level. We were pitched in the far camping field which wasn't too full. We had plenty of space but other tents and particulary caravans looked very squashed in places.

The toilets and showers were always kept clean, though the ladies frequently had no toilet paper in any of the cubicles. For the size of the site though there are not enough toilets or showers especially at peak times where you usually had to queue.

There is no shop on site or nearby but the owners sell milk, eggs, juice and pop, and a dozen free range eggs for 85p is a bargain!

The Cottage Inn pub is just along the road, the food looked delicous and they have a lovely big beer garden which is great as they don't allow dogs in the pub.

The site is ideal for exploring Northumberland, Craster is a nice place with lovely walks and the beach at Embleton is fab. However I can't see us returning to this site again which is disappointing as last year it was one of our favourites.

What a find, a real gem of a site. We were allocated a pitch in the middle field with EHU, in same field were tents, caravans and campervans a real mixture.

No facilities for kids but this didn't stop families having fun, lots of different families joining in for football, chase etc. just like the 'good old days '!

Dog friendly, the only negative we could find was that the 'doggy waste bin' was on country lane 5 mins walk from the site entrance, which was a bit of an inconvenience.

Site has fantastic walks to Dustanburgh castle and Embleton ideally situated for Alnwick, Beadnell bay, Lindisfarne etc. We found a beautiful bay called Embleton bay next to Newton by the Sea a must for dog lovers, about 3miles of beach with an amazing view of Dustanburgh castle.

The toilets and showers were old but immaculate, clean at all times of day, didn't use the washing facilities but looked clean as well. All rubbish was recycled in separate bins.

Stayed for just one night en-route to Scotland. Planty of space, we were in the far camping field, nice and flat with open views. Toilet block a little walk from there, quite basic but perfectly functional and very clean.

Very friendly owner, who showed us to our pitch. You can also buy a few basic on site such as milk and eggs. The latter much cheaper than you can buy at a supermarket.

About a 15 minute walk to Craster which is beautiful. The pub in Craster doesn't serve food in the evening but the Cottage Inn nearest the campsite does and it was excellent.

Would definitely return to the site and restaurant.

This was our first camping trip to Northumberland and we were very impressed with the area and the campsite. We visited during the whitsun bank holiday week and although the site was very popular with a mixture of tourers, motorhomes and tents the toilets, washrooms and showers were always clean and surprisingly we didn't need to queue. The owners were very friendly and helpful and took obvious pride in their site.

The walk to Embleton beach is quite a stride, being around 3 miles by my reckoning but is along lanes and cycle paths that are closed to through traffic so very safe and quiet. Turn left out of the site then take the first right and follow the lane upto the farm. From here you can either follow the cycle path to Embleton or take the footpath to Dunstantonburgh Castle and the coastal path.

There's not much in the immediate area in terms of shops but there is a large Sainsbury's supermarket just off the A1 junction to the south of Alnwick.

We visited Alnwick Castle and gardens over 2 days but could have easily squeezed both into 1 day. We wish we'd had more time to explore the local area and farther afield but at least we have an excuse to return to proctors stead.

We stayed on this site for a few nights recently, in a tent. We were a bit surprised as the site was larger than we'd expected, with a lot of caravans/trailer tents (we tend to prefer smaller sites), but we were directed to a tents-only field at the edge of the site and it was great - tons of space and nice flat ground. The site is divided into several areas, so the caravans are in one part and there are two fields for tents - one for people with kids and one that was just for adults. We really appreciated this, as our field was nice and peaceful while kids could run around as much as they wanted in the family field.

The site is in a great location - about a mile's easy walk from the centre of Craster, where there is a pub, a couple of cafes, a tourist information centre and a harbour, and the start of the footpath to Dunstanburgh Castle. There's also another pub about 5 mins walk from the site - they do food, although we didn't try it so can't say what it's like.

There is no supermarket or anything in Craster so make sure you buy food and things before you arrive. The campsite sell eggs, milk, juice & water all day.

The toilet/shower block was extremely clean and seemed to be checked regularly. The showers take 10p pieces and last for quite a while - 20p was more than enough, and if the money runs out the shower goes cold rather than stopping completely so if you've nearly finished you can grit your teeth and rinse off in cold water if you have to!

Overall we were really impressed with this site, it's bigger than the ones we normally stay in but that wasn't an issue at all as it was very quiet and divided up well with lots of space. We'd definitely stay here again!

This site is an extremely flat, well maintained and a quality site.

We had problems finding the site initially but on arrival were taken, by a pleasant man (owner?) on his bike, to our allotted hook up point.

As it was first time we had been to a campsite for around 25 years and the first time we had hired a Motorhome he took time, despite the rain, to explain about the campsite and all it's facilities.

The facilities were very clean and well maintained.

Basic produce, milk etc, are obtainable from the owner.

The site went very quiet about 10.30 pm and remained so until well past daylight.

There are many walks for people and dogs a short distance from the site and are easy to find.

There is a pub a few hundred yards away from the site.

Would I use this site again if I was in the area? Yes - it is ideal for a short stay but probably not for much more than a few days.

On arrival we were shown to a patch of grass just in the opening of a field full of tents / caravans. There appeared to be nice pitches backing onto hedges but we were not lucky enough to get one of those.

Appeared reasonably quiet when we arrived but everyone arrived back from their outings about 5 o'clock which made the site very noisy and busy. (We admit to preferring a much quieter and spacious site).

Facilities were clean and plenty. Take plenty 10p pieces for your showers though.

It's a good site for children as there were loads! There is a sign saying no balls/frisbies but a lot of people must have missed it!

The warden is friendly and takes frequent trips around his site on his bike, giving it a bit of a 70's feeling :-)

The Cottage Inn is a lovely pub and only 5mins walk away. There is a fab wooden play area and huge beer garden. We had a spare couple of hours between sites and even managed to park our tourer in the pub carpark! (Enquired if it was OK first just to be polite and they said no problem).

We may try this site again but out of peak season as we went during a busy bank holiday and it was a little too packed for us.

Go to Seahouses and do the boat trip round the islands if you have time. We did the 1 and half hour boat trip which cost a family of 4 £38. Quite pricey but worth it as the kids loved it!

We had a lovely time here, for 6 days in September. Weather was brilliant, a bit windy and cold at night but great in the day and lots of lovely walks right from the site. There were far more caravans than tents on the site (not sure if this is usual or just because of the time of year, the summer campers have gone) but no queues for the showers etc. The showers and loos were fairly old, could maybe do with a bit of modernisation at some point but absolutely fine for us and always nice and clean. We thought the owner was nice, he wasn't rude at all, more 'a man of few words'!

We had our dog with us so we couldn't go into he pub in the village and it was too cold to sit in the beer garden at night really but we were always tired from mammoth walks to all of the castles around! Dunstanburgh castle is only about 15 mins walk across the fields. Seahouses we thought was a bit run down but Bamburgh was a nice village and the castle and beach is fantastic - dogs seem to be allowed on pretty much all of the beaches. Morrisons in Alnwick is probably the closest big supermarket so stock up there. We went down to walk a section of Hadrian's Wall which took over an hour to get to but was definitely worth it, we also went across to Lindisfarne and around the abbey (ruins) which is lovely.

Overall this isn't a site with lots of facilities but it is close to the sea with lots of beautiful beaches and walks all around, the facilities it does have are fine, it's a well kept site and there's a pub nearby, EHUs are available (several sites in this area don't have them) and it's a good base for exploring the surrounding area. We will go back next time we're in the area.

What a fab site! We couldn't get on the year before as the owner wouldn't book us an electric hook up as 'it was bank holiday and they might get busy'? This utterly confounded us, but we tried again and were able to book (not BH this time!) and it was well worth it.

You can see Dunstanborough castle from the main entrance and there's lovely countryside all around. The facilities were extensive and clean. Miles from the tents, but that seems often to be the case. Nice flat field with a very countryside feel. Quiet and peaceful. The pub in Dunstan served nice food. Nearest supermarket was in Alnwick. Must see attraction-Alnwick gardens, they are fabulous!

Had a great 4 night stay at Proctor's Stead at the end of August and it was brilliant. I used these reviews in choosing this site, so thought I'd add my comments too! It was the first time that my wife and I had been camping together (although we both grew up camping) so it was great to have such a good experience.
Excellent location. About 10 minutes off the A1, and the country lanes aren't too scary. Although you'll need to remember your lefts and rights! Very close to the sea but not too breezy.
We were in a two-person tent in the second field, and were given plenty of space. Found it generally very quiet. Paid £16 per night. Facilities were spotless. Very clean toilets & showers. Was a busy site but only had to wait for a cubicle once. 10p in the showers lasted about 5 minutes, but very good & hot!
Milk, eggs and 'pop' for sale (honesty box) on owner's doorstep which was very handy. Freezer to put blocks in too, 10p per block.
Great access to lots of attractions. Alnwick Garden was well worth a day, as was the town itself. NT Cragside was about 40 mins drive and beautiful (even in the drizzle). Holy Island about 40 mins too. The walk to Dunstanburgh Castle from the site, then back via Craster is a must. Cottage Inn only 5 mins away, and serves great food and beer.
Would recommend the site, and use again.
