Nipped off for a long weekend (Thurs pm to Sunday) without the children in our 8 man tent (oh, the space!). Beautiful campsite with spacious level pitches. It's lovely and quiet - we decided that we wouldn't take the children to this campsite as there are lots of 'no ball games' etc signs and no space where they could kick a ball about or just let off steam.
The surrounding area is amazing. Lovely walk down to Craster (set your alarm and walk down to the harbour to watch the sunrise). Seahouses, Bamburgh, boat trip to the Farne Islands (wear a hat, infact a helmet would be best and a coat you're not precious about!), Holy Island. Honestly, it's the most beautiful part of the country.
Walk for miles on the golden beaches, try the Copper Kettle at Bamburgh (cream tea to die for), see the beautiful memorial to Grace Darling in the churchyard and then get a piece of steak (T-bone was so tender) or whatever you fancy from the butcher and some salad from the greengrocers and go back to the campsite for a gorgeous bbq.
From Seahouses, the boats don't always land on Farne Islands in the morning but the people at the 1st ticket booth don't tell you, they just say they can't land so if you want to go onto the Island then ask what time they will be landing. I would recommend The Golden Gate (2nd booth) which is the boat we went on. If the National Trust man is at the harbour, he is really friendly and if you join you can land for free on the Island. There are loads of NT places here - Dunstanburgh Castle and Cragside, near Morpeth, is well worth a visit.
Cragside is an amazing house. Unfortunately we didn't have time to go round the grounds as we had to head for home (3 hours away!) but we did drive round the grounds and they are gorgeous. We had a lovely lunch in the restaurant. It's very, very steep (as in Crag- side) so you need to be mobile to get around or have strong arms if you are going to push a buggy around.
Sorry for such a long review but this campsite is the perfect base for exploring this most lovely part of the world. Facilities were always clean - make sure you have 10p's for the shower. I needed 2 x 10p's but my husband only needed 1 !

We spent 5 nights at this lovely quiet site. The site was well maintained, toilets and showers were always clean, the only grip regarding the toilets was there was no soap at the gents wash basins to wash your hands after visiting the loo, unlike the ladies. There was a great wee pub just round the corner serving good food. The warden lived in a bungalow on site and sold eggs, milk etc. Great base for visiting Alnwick Castle and other surounding attractions. We would recomend this site to anyone who enjoys a peaceful and friendly campsite.

Lovely site- me and my boyfriend and our dog stayed one night here and found it very easy to find. On arrival you need to book in at the bungalow on the left hand side. I found the owner to be friendly and very helpful (not grumpy at all like some reviews describe!) We were then shown to our pitch and given a choice of 3 areas to camp- each tent is well spaced and it didn't feel crowded even though the site was very busy.
There are 4 fields at Proctor Steads- the first has a few statics only, the second seemed to be mainly caravans and the toilet/shower block, the third larger field was a mixture of lots of tents/caravans/motorhomes and our field was the furthest away and also the smallest. We were in the far corner of our field with a large hedge and some trees behind so were quite sheltered which was good. There is a large paddock with cattle to the side of this field which our dog was fascinated by!
The showers and toilets were all extremely clean which was amazing as there were so many people on site when we visited! There is also a dishwashing room and seperate laundry area as well as taps for drinking water all over the site. A payphone is also near the entrance and as others have mentioned the bungalow has pop/milk/eggs and fresh juice for sale outside. Electric hook ups are ready to use all over the site, not sure about cost as we didnt need this.
It is only a very nice 5 minute walk along to the lovely pub, The Cottage Inn which looks tiny from outside but is actually quite big. We didnt have food there but it smelt fab! They do not allow dogs inside but have a few tables out front where you can sit with your furry friend or they will let you walk through the bar to sit out the back too. The prices where cheap (we thought so anyway) at £2.60ish for a pint of Stella and £2.35 for Bacardi and coke.
Its about a 5 minute drive to Craster where there is another pub, The Jolly Fisherman (which apparently lets dogs inside) and the famous kipper smokehouse too (but not much else really!) Check out the fantastic food from the nice Scottish man in the little van next to the tourist info though! lovely!
Had a really great stay at Proctors Stead and we will definitely be returning- paid £14 for our large tent and 50p for the dog.

One of the best sites I have ever used.
The site is immaculate without being regimented or overly developed. When you book in you are taken to your pitch in a way that ensures you have plenty of space without the worry of later arrivals being squeezed in and overcrowding the site - an increasing problem that has driven us from some sites that we had previously used for years.
The facilities are a little basic but very very clean and more than adequate for the number on site. The site bungalow sells the basics of milk, eggs etc.
The coastal walking in the area is astounding. The coastal village of Craster is just 1/2 a mile away with an excellent pub and the renowned Smokary for kippers, smoked salmon etc.
Fantastic!

An excellent campsite. Though it holds a significant number of caravans and tents, the site is large and the owner guides you to your spot and ensures a good spacing between units.
Ground is flat, and facilities are excellent; not only good showers and toilet blocks, but milk and eggs available from the owner - what more could a camper ask for?!
The area is simply fantastic for a weekend trip or longer. Craster is idyllic, Dunstanburgh striking, the local pubs are all excellent.

This was our favourite campsite on our 2 week touring holiday. The facilities are spotless even during wet weather. The showers cost 10p but you get loads of hot water for ages. There were never queues as there seem to be plenty of toilets/showers for the number of people, even when the site is full. The toilet/shower cubicles are also very spacious which makes it easy to use them with a toddler.
We had a sheltered pitch alongside the hedge and weren't put too close to our neighbours. However if you had a pitch in the middle of the field you wouldn't have so much privacy. Very peaceful at night. You can also walk to the coast and to a fantastic beach. I would definitely come back here.

Very clean and pleasant site. Toilets and shower block, although quite old, spotlessly clean. All pitches level and appeared well drained.Tuned up with no cash, roadwork's stopped us getting off the A1, but the owner was really helpful, let us park our van then gave us directions to a cash point. Nice cash point too, inside a pub!
If here was a fault, it was that we were sited in the middle of the site, rather than round the edge, but it was a huge field, so apart from no shelter from a wall or hedge, it was fine.
Nearest pub, Cottage Inn, was just a short walk away, but we found it quite expensive. A short dive to the Jolly Fisherman in Craster was much better, a sea side pub with a beer garden overlooking the harbour.
Will definitely go back to Proctors Stead, but maybe request a more sheltered pitch.

A very clean, flat site located in a wonderful area. The toilet and shower block was adequate although the toilet cubicles would benefit from having their own hand washing facility. If all the sinks are being used, you would have to wait to wash your hands after using the toilet. Eggs, milk and juice could be purchased from the camp office. The no ball games and dogs must be leashed signs, were generally ignored, although anyone carrying out these activities did seem to take care and it didn't cause any problems. The local pub (10 min walk) served good food and drinks at reasonable prices. A mile down the road is the harbour village of Craster. The village is famous for its kippers, and having tried them I can understand why, they are delicious. If you like walking, this is an ideal location. It is possible to walk for miles along the beautiful coastline. There are many beautiful beaches that have few people on them. The castle at Dunsborough is worth a visit but we preffered the one a few miles away at Warkworth. The Hermitage pub, at Warkworth, have a carvery on Friday nights. The food is excellent, the staff friendly and the prices are reasonable. To avoid disappointment, it is advisable to book a table. Unfortunately we could only stay for five nights but will certainly be back. The places that we enjoyed visiting as follows. Craster, Alnwick (Barter books and gardens), Warkworth and Alnmouth. Amble was a disappointment and lacked the charm of other places visited but the chippy next to the harbour did dish up some great fish and chips.

We have just returned from 2 weeks at this site. Robbie (owner and manager) was helpful and generally pleasant though the site is mainly aimed at those without children and ours were moved on from anywhere they could be. It has no play area and is therefore very quiet- especially at nights. We found many people not tolerant of children playing even beside our caravan using a swingball were asked to move! There are lots of permanent pitches and seasonals. These people get on together very well and are friendly, and this creates a bit of a oldies atmosphere. There is a way to the rocky beach around Dunstonburgh Castle and Craster is a walk away, but if you want sand, its quite a way. You can buy basics at the bungalow, but anything more from Craster. The next nearest site is the caravan club at Dunstan Hill and we met someone who had just come from there saying it was dirty (loos never cleaned) and knee deep with uncut grass. This used to be a more convenient site, but it is noisier as it has a play area and the children were playing until well after eleven.
