We've only been caravanning since September but have already been away a lot. This site was by far the worst we have stayed at, so much so that we left early. On the first night there were powercuts every 15 minutes or so, supposedly due to the people in tents using too much power. Don't allow that many tents to use hook up would be the logical answer to this but we quickly discovered that logic is definitely not a main player at this campsite. The 'family room' was accessed from a door outside which was completely blokes by smokers, great for my 2 year old to walk through. Once inside we were greeted by the sight of around 15 children playing on the dancefloor with bubble guns which thrilled my son, he adores bubbles and asked for one. I told him he could have one if they had them in the shop, went to the shop, found a load on the shelf, queued to pay for it only to get to the front of the queue to be told they had been banned as a girl slipped on the bubble mixture on the dancefloor a few night earlier, I explaine that this was all very well and good but there were still kids out there playing with them, he said they had been bought before the accident. Again, missing logic, take them off the shelves and ban them from the building altogether. This was made even better when as I was leaving the shop a man went in and was allowed to buy two refills of bubble mixture for the gun. Brilliant. After spending a long time explaining to my devastated 2 year old why all the other kids could have on but he couldn't even though they had them in the shop we gave up and went back to bed. Next morning went to the only shower block which was a mess with clothes, toilet paper, grass, mud and people. I queued for a shower for 10 minutes. Once in there is a hook covered by a shower curtain to stop your clothes getting wet, however only one hook. Shoes got wet on the floor and I hung my clean clothes over the door which were pulled off and chucked on the floor on the other side by children. Pressed the button for the shower and no water came on my head out the shower head but dribbled out of the button below. This also happened in the men's showers to my husband and another ladies shower to my mother in law. Long story short - one night toilet block totally flooded and unusable by children. Park unsafe for kids as fences to road don't actually prevent children running across to the park on the other side. Dogs in the playarea harassing children. Kids as young as 2 totally unsupervised. Arcade machines nearly all out of order. Late night noise. Lots of rules but none are enforced. Only good points- shop relatively well stocked, some friendly seasonal pitch owners. Staff when dealing with our complaints as we left offered us a free weekend back there. We won't be taking them up on their offer!

Splash world in Southport centre was brilliant for the kids, there is a big pleasure beach but didn't go. Formby beach isn't far which is gorgeous however we did see nicer campsites in the surrounding areas.

Been visiting this site for many years but park is now so neglected it is becoming a serious health hazard. My wife and I arrived at our touring caravan last weekend to find our pitch completely flooded along with many others. The filthy mud that was pouring through our awning smelt like sewerage from the static caravans behind us. (We were on pitch 104 at the top of the hill). The other caravans around us had been supplied with pallets to raise the flooring in the awning above the influx of mud so they were OK. We had a hard standing under our caravan that was under about two inches of brown, slimey water throughout our whole stay. We went for a shower, of which there are 8 for the whole site, to find the shower block door lock broken. (They have been all year). Two young lads in the shower block pointed out that somebody had laid a brown one in one of the cubicles and pushed it inbetween the cubicles under the wall where the drain runs. I looked in the other cubicles to find a scene of utter destruction in every cubicle. This problem has been getting worse over the last few years, and now the shower block really should be demolished and rebuilt. I opened the cubicle for the disabled to find that somebody had used a brown one to draw a picture of the sun on the wall. I went to the office to report the problem to find that the groundsman was on his own on what proved to be one of the busiest weekends of the year. He told me that the poo problem was an ongoing thing and that he would have to close the office and clean the mess up himself. He said that as there is no security on site and has not been for a long time the touring and camping side of the park is pretty much left. After many years of staying on this site as store and stay users we decided to pull our van off at weekend. When driving round the park on our exit it was sad to see peoples tents underwater, kids covered from head to foot in mud, the play area totally wrecked and the shower block door locks still not repaired. So some questions that I might be asked.

1. Will you be returning soon. No. I would rather peel my eyeballs with a rusty spud peeler!

2. Have you enjoyed your stay. Up until about two years ago, Yes. Then there has been a steady decline into a slum area.

3. Do you recommend the park. I would rather recommend swimming with pirranah fish.

4. Do you have any advice. Yes. Go caravaning in Lybia. DO NOT GO TO RIVERSIDE CARAVAN PARK. SOUTHPORT.

We stopped here for an overnight stay on our way back from Scotland.

We had seen some of the reviews just after booking and thought people were overreacting.

When we arrived at our pitch, which we paid for the gold pitch. The grass needed a cut, the hard standing pitch had a slope to it and was very small. The toilets were dirty and in need of some TLC. The park was full of unsupervised children until the early hours. The security guards finish patrolling the site at 10:30pm, after that you have to phone to get them out. There was a lot of caravans that have not moved in a long time, it felt like a housing estate really. We were just grateful it was a stop over and not a weekend or week's holiday.

We have seen this site times in passing on way to Southport and decided to book as knowing it's proximity to Southport and also that Stan Boardman was on in then club so fairly decent entertainment without having to move from the site.

Pro's

Easily accessible
Plenty of space
Pitch good and spacious

Cons

Litter bins overflowing
Toilets dirty, full of grass and never cleaned from when we arrived to leaving
Sat at back of club and couldn't hear entertainment clearly enough to enjoy the act

We won't be going back as the park felt tired and in need of updating and didn't feel well managed.

We have stayed here before (At Halloween when we were very impressed by the children’s entertainment), but this time we noticed that the site seemed tired and in need of some TLC.

We arrived after Reception had closed and a note on the door advised us to call the Touring warden, who arrived within five minutes to check us in. It is worth noting you have to pay refundable £20 cash (no cards) as a security deposit for the barrier pass and toilet/shower key.

We originally started off with our touring caravan on a grass pitch but ended up upgrading to a hand standing (superior) pitch as the ground was so boggy and muddy. There had been some rain in the days previous but we felt that the drainage could have been improved, especially as the site had only just reopened after a two week shut down.

The hard standing pitch included water and electricity. The pitch size was certainly a good size, but we felt that had the grass pitches been level and drained these would have been more than sufficient. Friends were joining us for the weekend and we had asked to be located next to each other which was arranged without problem.

The café has just been refurbished and one morning we enjoyed a very nice, but slightly over priced breakfast.

We only sampled the entertainment in the family room one night during our five night stay and this was okay. There was a children’s disco followed by a cabaret singer. The drinks prices were reasonable for a holiday park. I don’t remember last time around there being a Children’s entertainment team, but this time there was. There were a lot of static vans on the site and these people all seemed to know each other and the entertainment team.

I mentioned earlier that the site needs some TLC, there are lots of buildings including the now closed swimming pool which appear to have been abandoned. So much more could be made to utilise these and tidy the site up. There are lots of caravans that look like they have not been opened up in the last ten years! The Management could really do with getting a grip of this situation as it makes the site seem scruffy.

Southport also seemed to have gone down hill in recent years, all the places I remembered so fondly from my childhood, the fun fair, the boating lake and the miniature railway were derelict. There has been considerable investment in other areas though and there is a large leisure and retail park, and Splash World (get your 20% discount voucher on Money Supermarket) is great fun.

Would I visit again, not sure? We had a lovely time away and Southport does have some good attractions, but the site is tired and I think if we came back to the area I’d try a different site.

When we arrived on site the staff at the reception were very friendly and helpful although once we found our pitch we were disappointed.

It was hard to find as the pitch numbers weren`t very well highlighted and the pitch itself was small. The back of our tent ( 4. 2 X 3. 6 meteres) was about 6' away from the back of the caravan on the pitch in front. Felt like we were camping on a car park.

The pitch was level though. This was the ehu section. We had a walk around the park and the non electric field looked lovely, lots of green space and well away from the site roads which ran about 2 feet in front of our pitch.

The toilets were modern but needed cleaning. Didn`t see them clean over the weekend we stayed. The dog walk was good as was the shop, which had reasonable prices and friendly staff.

Enjoyed Southport but wouldn`t go back to this site

We stayed here in a caravan with our 3 year old and 18 month old.

Pro's:-

Close to Southport

Toilets clean

The disco for children at weekend wasn't to bad.

Con's:-

Pitches were difficult to get the caravan onto because of how tight the opposite pitches were.

Dish washing area was dirty and bins overflowing.

Children not allowed in the bar midweek which meant a rather boring week.

Arcade was useless - nothing worked nearly every machine had been rammed with 1&2p coins and were broken.

We had to travel home to give the kids a bath because the showers were totally unsuitable for little one's as no temperature control.

Staff were rather unhelpful, we asked to be moved to a pitch closer to the play area as there was at least 3 or 4 free and we were told the pitches were already booked but they were empty the entire week and the day we left.

Play area was useless it was completely flooded.

Will not be returning to this site but Southport is well worth a visit.

We have just returned from a fabulous weekend at Riverside. We were in a tent without ehu, which meant that we had a huge field to pick our spot. Family also came with a trailer tent with ehu - this area was much more tightly packed.

There was loads of room on our field for ball games. Two lovely play areas for the children. The shop was well stocked, and the toilets were heated and clean.

The site called us before we left to warn us that the fields were water logged from overnight rain - fine when we got there but we were impressed by their concern.

There were a few campers by use that needed to learn a bit of camping etiquette! That certainly wasn't the fault of the site though. A fab weekend all round.

 Good Points:

Good playpark.
Reasonable prices in shop.
Staff reasonably civil.

Bad Points:

Site very dirty with litter
Too many tents on the site - pre-booking makes no difference you still find yourself surrounded at close proximity
Toilets and showers adequate but dirty.
24 hour loud radio 1
Wardens totally overwhelmed and not enforcing any rules whatsoever
Lots of traffic all over the site including motorbikes. Felt unsafe for kids

Checking in staff were helpful and check in was easy. Refundable deposit needed for entry key fob. Booked non-electric camping field which was lovely and green with lots of space to pitch - not overcrowded - but arrived on a Monday. EHU pitches looked overcrowded and among the caravan pitches, glad I booked non-electric pitch.

Pitched near to the play area and toilet/shower facilities for easiness with having 3 little ones.

Showers and toilets closed for cleaning everyday, really tidy. Pot washing sinks outside but under cover with plenty of hot water.

Lots of room for the kids to play footy etc and the 2 play areas kept the kids amused for hours.

Used the on site cafe once and it was reasonably priced and the food was good. The shop was ok but I prefered going into Southport for food shopping as there is an Asda, Morrisons and Sainsburys etc.

There is a bar on site which we used just once.

As our first camping try out, to see if we liked camping it was great, the only let down was some rowdy people arguing into the earlier hours on more than on occasion. Friday seems to get busier and noisier so we were glad to be heading home. We would visit Riverside again but only during the week again ie. Monday-Friday.
