Stayed at this site a couple of weekends ago for 2 nights. Upon arrival, reception staff were very friendly and explained where the pitch was. We got to the touring area which was really large so finding the pitch was a little difficult (some hook up boxes clearly state the pitch number, others don't, guess which one we got lol!).

The site was very clean and quite well laid out but some of the pitches will require the use of blocks to level out your van. Luckly, other tourers are only too willing to help and are very friendly!

Toilets were very clean and well kept, toilet paper well stocked too! There is a £20 deposit for the toilet, fire extinguisher and barrier pass which you get back upon leaving.

The on site shop is very reasonably priced and stocks most things for a comfortable stay. Supermarkets are only a short drive away if other items are needed. Gas is sold on site if you run out.

Play area was geared up for over 3's but is ok as there are a couple of toddler swings.

The waste disposal points can seem a little far if you have a full waste master/cassette toilet to empty.

Good location for touring Southport.

I would stay here again

Just returned from a long weekend and riverside. I will try to make this review as honest as possible! We arrived late on the Friday evening, we checked in and collected our key card for the barrier and key to the toilet. We found our pitches (where a party of two tents) the pitches where fairly small, the ground was very rocky and unlevel.

We had ehu which is near to the site facilities, there is no water or elson points near to the pitch they are situated at the toilet block. The toilet/showers are basic, as gas been said before there is no shelf to put your things although there is a hook with a shower curtain to cover - so remember to take your things in a bag! The toilets and showers where grubby the whole time we where there.

We never saw a warden patrol at any time and noise levels where quite high late at night - we also had people chasing the cockerel at 5. 30am! The cockerels do wake you very early!

The little shop on site was basic but had most of what you need at reasonable prices. The arcade was ok for the kids - most machines seemed to be working.

We popped to the club the one evening but it was full to brimming so we ended up sitting outside! There was a Michael Jackson tribute on which was quite good! And the kids flashing toys where well priced.

The site is situated approx 10 miles from the town of southport. Southport is a lovely town and gas s Sunday's for the kids. Ainsdale beach is beautiful and a must to visit!

We booked this site for a 9 night stay over the August bank holiday weekend. We chose this site because we had stayed at another Harrison Leisure site previously and found that one to be of a good standard.

A few days before we arrived I telephoned to ask something about the pitch we had been allocated. The young girl I spoke to was absolutely no help so my husband called them back a few minutes later and spoke to a different young girl. She was equally unhelpful so we gave up.

When we arrived on site with our caravan we got to meet the lovely young things we had spoken to on the phone and they were just as we expected them to be. Uninterested, and just not what you want to greet you when you are arriving for a break away with the family.

Anyway, we found our pitch and set up our awning with the help of some lovely people who were already pitched behind us (caravanners are fantastic people). The site was absolutely packed and felt very crowded indeed but this was to be expected for a bank holiday weekend. The area around the playground and the main toilet block was teeming with kids so we were very glad that our pitch was in a fairly quiet location.

The toilet blocks were dirty. Many of the toilets had no locks, the wash basins were dirty, the floors were dirty and always littered with squares of toilet paper. The toilets in the main shower block seemed to be the worst and the showers were the worst I have experienced on a campsite. There were 8 showers in total on the site, so always a queue. The blocks all had signs on them saying what time they would be closed for cleaning but even if you went 10 minutes after they had been cleaned they were still filthy.

The kitchen tap in our caravan broke on the first day so we had to use the dishwashing facilities. The water was just lukewarm and there was always food debris and grease in the sink and on the draining board that had to be cleaned before you could start washing your own dishes. This is mainly down to inconsiderate campers who don’t clean up after themselves.

The elsan point at the main wash block was always completely awash with sewage and no hose pipe to swill down or to fill your chemical toilet.

The rubbish skips by the main toilet block were full to the brim at all times of the day. I don’t know when they were emptied but they always seemed to be overflowing whether you went first thing in the morning, during the day or last thing at night.

When we arrived we were given a leaflet for the kids’ club activities (Riverside Rascals) and I took my daughter one afternoon to join in the treasure hunt. The girl on the greeting desk could hardly look up from her Take A Break, the room was full of broken toys, litter on the floor, grubby soft toys, colouring pencils with no points on them, a little portable TV in the corner plugged into an extension lead that was trailing on the carpet just ready for someone to fall over it. I stayed for a little while to make sure my daughter was settled and I didn’t see any of the entertainment staff crack a smile once and their interaction with the children was dreadful. Needless to say my daughter didn’t want to go again after that visit.

The arcade had a few penny slot machines but most of the slots were blocked up with 2 pences that were stuck. There were a couple of pool tables in the arcade but no cues. We popped our heads in the Lounge Bar (adults only) and it reminded us of the dive bars that we don’t go in at home because they are always sticky and grubby. The Family Entertainment room was inadequate the one time we visited. Standing room only, a queue a mile long at the bar with just one person serving, a children’s magician using inappropriate adult innuendo. It was a quick about turn for us and back to the caravan for an early night. Obviously I will not return to this site again

Second time at this site, not through wanting to stay again though, as my first 3 choices were full and had promised the kids to go camping, so ended up at riverside again. Was not quite as bad as the first time we went here last year, we picked a bad bank holiday weekend then (it was hell), this time was less busy.

Small shop on site has the basics, could do with stocking more meats/bbq stuff and meals but better than nothing. Kids enjoyed getting ice creams from the shop as it was hot when we went. If like me you don't drive (hubby drops us off and has to work) its really in the middle of no where so cant walk to a supermarket or anywhere else. The showers were dirty and very busy, trying to shower a 4 year old is near impossible, they really do need to sort somewhere in the showers to put dry clothing, the shower covers the whole cubicle so you need a bag to keep your clothes dry, I tried to shower mid day when less busy. The toilets were clean by the tent field, although need cleaning more than once a day, but the toilets in shower block at other end were dirty as they were used more. The first couple of nights we didn't sleep because of selfish people up all night drinking and noisy, luckily it was quieter the 3rd night as lots of people left and it was lovely then that one day and night, wish it was always like that.

There is a cafe on site but we didn't use it so I cant comment on that. There is two nice parks for the kids to play in and there is always lots of space around the tent for them to play too, although the first day lots of teenagers took over the park so the little ones couldn't use it (like last time), once they went my kids loved playing on it.

The site is easy found as it's on a main road into Southport but once on site you hear very little road noise. At reception you are allocated a pitch & a barrier key (£20 refundable deposit required). The site has 2 camping areas and over 300 touring pitches, all are hardstanding with an electric and water point, pitches are in regimented rows.

There are a number of toilet blocks but only 1 shower block for everyone, all of which could do with upgrading.

Likewise there is not site lighting at night so you'll need a torch.

On the plus side you are close to Southport.

We regularly stay at Riverside as we don't live too far away and its easy for us for a quick weekend get away.

During quieter periods its a fantastic campsite facilities clean and site quiet, tents spaced out.

During busy periods it can be really hectic and cleaning needs to be done more so to reflect the higher influx of campers as they are only done once a day in an afternoon.

The tent field is slightly exposed but there are some trees you can shelter your tent near for natural windbreaks.

One word of warning I wouldn't camp too near the play area in busy periods as some people have no concept of the 6metre rule and you may go out for the day to find some idiot pitched right on top of your tent on your return.

We have stayed here many times and only once have we seen prescence of a warden it really needs to be policed more in busy times as many rules are blatantly ignored.

Avoid this site like the plague during 2 weeks in June and a week in September as they allow a large rally to descend and they literally take up 90% of the camping fields leaving the small field surrounding the play area so you end up pitching on top of one another. (The site really should restrict people camping during this time but they don't so you're rammed in like sardines its seriously not safe).

The shop is well stocked and now under new owners who have hiked the prices up massively which is a shame, the garage up the road is cheaper. The cafe is still quite reasonably priced and good food plus free wifi. We never visit the bar due to having a dog with us so can't comment.

Overall its a really good site for families which is why we still go, in busy periods it definitely needs a warden on regular patrol though as every single rule is broken.

Just returned from a week here, very noisy one night did not manage to sleep until 4. 30 in the morning due to a crowd of people playing loud music. Another night screaming. Couldn't use the showers because I had a three year old to shower and dress which was impossible. Only 8 showers. No spaces between caravans, I could hear next door turn over! No entertainment for the kids (16 yrs old and 3 yr old). Southport was no better, the splash pool was only open in school holidays.

Just stayed the one night due to the bad weather.

On arrival the staff were very helpful and informative.

We were positioned on the top field, which can be very windy and open to the elements.

The toilets were ok, and the showers were usable, however no dry area and these were with the toilet area.

The washing up area was good and the cafe and chip shop comes in handy for a quick meal or snack.

The playground was very busy and the play areas were well used.

We would stay again - overall it was good.

Chose Riverside as our first taster of camping and, on the whole, wasn't disappointed. Campsite staff friendly and welcoming, and site itself clean.

Shower and toilet blocks clean and good enough for purpose.

As others have said the on-site shop is small and basic but has enough of what you need to get by.

Our kids (aged 15) were a little disappointed with amusement arcade as many of the 'machines' were out of order.

Only real complaint was that, despite being relatively quiet, with a number of empty pitches, the pitches issued were all on top of each other. This said I found pitches adequately sized, with enough space between so that we weren't disturbed by our neighbours.

Stayed here for two nights with a few friends. Initial thoughts of the site were that it was large; there was plenty of space for us to pitch and the tent area wasn't too crowded. The fields were flat and seemed to be fairly regularly mown.

There was a shop on site, along with an arcade, cafe and bar. The shop was fairly well stocked with sweets, drinks and toys as well as some basic groceries, milk, sausages bacon etc.

We visited the arcade in the evening on the Saturday night, we'd only intended to have a game of pool, but the whole area was off putting and one of the gaming machines was broken and was making an awful racket. The entire thing looked unloved. Pool cues and balls were obtained from the bar area which was dark and dingy. There was only one cue that wasn't broken, and we were the only ones playing pool.

The toilet block closest to the pitch was ok, was cleaned once a day. There were two showers in there but they were just in the toilets in plain view of everyone (further inspection revealed that they weren't plumbed in!). The main toilet block was clean enough, but suffered again from only being cleaned daily. On a smaller site that would have been enough but on a site as large as this one it wasn't enough.

The site is on a duel carriageway which can cause problems getting out if it's busy as it's a one way (I will admit that we went over the weekend of the air show so the traffic was much heavier than usual).

Overall, if you aren't expecting too much the site is fine. If you're going with kids there were a couple of decent sized play areas and plenty of space for games. If you're going for the holiday park experience with the bar and arcade it's not worth it.

As it's pretty much the only site in Southport I'd go back, but if it were anywhere else I wouldn't.
