This is the best of campsites and the worst of campsites. Fabulous location and the ponies are a delight but I felt the sheer size of the campsite meant it was too hard to manage.
It would greatly benefit from one more toilet block as at peak times we were queuing for 30mins for showers. They also needed more frequent cleaning as they were not up to the usual caravan & camping club standards.
As for noise we had 2 quiet nights followed by 2 extremely noisy nights.
Hurst Castle is well worth a visit, it is a lovely 2. 5 mile walk from the village of Keyhaven & you will be rewarded with stunning views of The Isle of Wight.
There is also a friendly & good value taxi boat service to the castle & back. Also The New Forest Visitor Centre at Lyndhurst is a small but interesting place to find out more about the area.

Just back from a lovely half term break at Roundhill and can highly recommend it!
The site is very large and feels very spacious.
There is a great mix of open land, small copses, shrubs, and very easy to pick a spot which feels fairly private, even during the school holidays.
The wardens are visible, and very strict about the 6m rule (fire risks), and helpful, about local pony trekking/bike hire etc.
The 'quiet after 10.30/11' rule was adhered to by everyone within earshot, and after 11 it was silent, apart from the owls - really lovely.
Apart from a short queue at peak times, the was lots of access to the spotlessly clean toilet/shower/washing up areas, and beautifully hot water all the time!
There were also a lot of well placed drinking water taps throughout the site.
No formal recreation facilities, but cycle hire locally will deliver to the campsite, and local village including lovely tea shops, Chinese takeaway and chippy, as well as tesco express within 5min drive. But all uphill on the way back.Suggest avoid grocery shopping by bike!
Our children (10,7,3) spent most of the days on their bikes, making dens, climbing trees and enjoying the wildlife in a very Enid Blyton sort of way.Perfect childhood holiday! We spent a happy few days drinking lots of tea and rescuing the 3 year old from trees he had been shoved up by the other two!
Would definitely return again and again and again.

A lovely open site where you can choose your pitch - so get there early! There are numerous rules to observe but this is to ensure safety so didn't feel it was a problem.
Horses wander freely on the site and will visit your tent if you inadvertently leave food around.
Great walks and cycle rides from the site.
There is no shop on site or children's play area so if you want these type of facilities this campsite is not for you.
My only complaint relates to the toilet blocks. They are badly designed (Toilet doors open virtually on to each other and I got hit a couple of times by people coming out) and they were VERY dirty. They are only cleaned once a day and at peak period (bank holidays/school holidays - the time we went) this is not enough.
There was mud on the shower floors, toilet paper on the floor and the area around the sinks got waterlogged. If they would clean more regularly it would be a great campsite.

We were a large party and received a warm welcome as we entered the site. We paid on arrival. The site adds extra on if paying by credit card.
We were allowed to pitch our tents where we liked. The campsite requests that guests do not pitch tents after 10pm. Unfortunately a couple within our group were delayed in traffic and didn't arrive until 9:45pm. They were subsequently still pitching their tent at 10:30. We received no complaints.
The ground is a little undulating (even for a campsite). We had to choose carefully where to go. There are lots of ponies around and the campsite therefore requests that windbreakers are not attached to tents, that tents are a minimum of 6ft apart and that there are no more than 6 panes to a windbreaker. This is all to ensure that ponies sustain no injuries from getting trapped. We followed these rules carefully and were pleased to have done so, as were visited by ponies the following morning at breakfast!
The campsite also asks that all food is kept within containers. We saw several ponies take advantage of the free food when people had not followed this rule.
The facilities were relatively clean. There were long queues at times and the facilities were a little muddy.
There was plenty of space for children to run around. Plenty to do in the area. BBQs are allowed, as long as they are raised off the ground. No wood or BBQ logs were allowed. They also allowed us to have a visitor, although I think they are quite tight on this normally.
Overall, a very pleasant stay.

Just returned from a 5 night stay over the Bank Holiday weekend. Had a brilliant time wished we could have stayed longer.
Glad we arrived on Thursday evening, much easier to find a good spot, it was very busy by Friday evening. Wardens on hand to keep the 6m rule.
Toilet blocks busy but always clean, showers busy at peak periods, usually clean, but other campers need to learn how to use the mop provided and leave the showers how they would wish to find them! Pot wash busy at peak times but site was full and Bank Holiday weekend. Water always hot.
Take a windbreak, you will need it.
Bike and walking trails all start on site or very close.
Brockenhurst close for daily essentials, shops, pubs etc.
Ponies and cows roam the site. Keep all food hidden, the ponies will go inside your tent! Our neighbours were sitting in their doorway and the pony pushed in and stole a bag of apples, caused great amusement, but they are wild animals and can get aggresive.
The site was full, yet at 11.00pm all you could hear were the owls.
Overall very good, would return, could probably be made even better by a children's playground, but that's only our opinion with 7 & 9 yr olds.

Stayed here as part of a bike ride. I think they usually prefer longer stayers but seemed happy enough to take us at short notice.
Reasonably priced, great location, feels like the middle of nowhere and you can pitch up wherever you like in the woods, so its not like a lot of the larger commercial sites with rows of tents everywhere. Not too far away from the next village either.
Would recommend to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway.

We stayed at this site for 4 days, 3 nights and it was fantastic. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and the facilities were good. There are only 4 showers so we did have to queue when the site was really busy at the weekend, but this wasn't a problem.
The site was stunning, it was so peaceful with just the birds, cows and horses. An ideal campsite for families as children could just run around to their hearts content.
I would definitely go back to this campsite again and would recommend this to anyone.

First time campers. Just my son and me in a 3 man tent. Didn't want anything complicated and planned to eat out rather than self cater for this first adventure. Arrived Friday evening. Left Sunday morning.
Roundhill is easy to find. Both from the Lyndhurst road before getting to Brockenhurst and also when in Brockenhurst it is signposted so if you overshoot one you get a second chance.
The 'meet and greet' on the entrance was welcoming. You are given a small map of the site which looks confusing but after a tour round in the car and a short familiarisation walk it all makes sense even to a novice like me. There are 3 toilet / shower / pot washing blocks which are fairly basic but functional and, when I was there, clean. One of them will be within a couple of minutes walk wherever you are on site. Waste and recycling areas are also at hand. Potable water on tap.
We set up within 20 yards of a couple of rabbits and were visited by horses and cattle over the weekend. Other crawling and flying creatures abounded in the scrub and woodland around so naturalists would be happy. Watch out for the cowpats and other large droppings.
The campsite is only 90 minutes from home so bugging out was a calculated option. Completely unnecessary as it turned out - we had a blast.
After a hot shower at site we went into Brockenhurst on Saturday morning and found the bakery did a meal deal - baguette (large), cake (large) and can of drink/bottle of water all for £2.20. Breakfast sorted. Venue was Mudeford beach which is less then 30 minutes away (don't go via Lymington) where we parked in the car park and spent a very warm day strolling along the LONG sandy beach and pushing one another towards the water. After overdoing the sun we went into Brockenhurst and ate at Palio 2, a very nice Italian next to the station. I had been there before with my wife so was wise enough to book earlier that day. Food excellent.
Great campsite. Lovely area. Will return to explore more and possibly for longer. Don't feel such a novice now.

Stayed here once on the last weekend of the season and it was great! It's a large site and has a mix of heathland and forest. It's located adjacent to Beaulieu Heath and encompasses some of the old RAF Beaulieu Heath airfield.
The facilities were very good and well maintained - although to be fair it was at the end of the season and wasn't busy at all. We'd stay here again for sure but think we'd avoid the school holidays, I'd imagine it's a very popular site and as such probably noisy and the facilities might struggle to cope with demand.
Wildlife freely roams the site and we saw donkeys, cattle, horses and ponies. No traffic noise and lots of birds. The site is picturesque and with direct access to the forest many walks can be had. The staff were polite and very informative.
This is my favourite Forestry Commission New Forest campsite to date but as said earlier it's probably very different at peak times.

Simply stunning. The site is hidden in the trees of the New Forest but easily accessible and close to Brockenhurst village and excellent rail network. There are no dedicated pitches and you simply are spoilt for choice of where to pitch- loads of lovely spots and enclaves behind shrubs and trees. The site is massive so never feels crowded. You are joined by the wild ponies of the forest and the herds of cows simply wandering around the sites- it is after all their grazing field. However the ground is rock hard so no problems with muddy fields. The toilets and showers are ok- hot and plentiful. No hook-ups but you can see why. This is organised camping at it's best- chilled staff, minimum rules and great outdoors.
