Having to part with our camper van due to parking restrictions. We where keen to get back to camping, our only option was to borrow a 2 man tent from our daughter ( not the best for OAP`s as we were to find out ) and return to the New Forest, a part of the country we love.
We had never been to Roundhill before.
A very large site, with lots of walks into the forest, and Warden accompanied wildlife walks during the day and evening. Staff are friendly and helpful.
Toilet/shower blocks were the best we have ever seen on any site, took a few days getting used to the fact that the nearest one to you will be closed for cleaning for two hours, but many more blocks open a little further on the site.
Security during day and night is excellent with night time patrols.
A excellent site for all ages, loads of paths for riding bikes around the site for the young and older ones,
In all a great site, we will be going back this year with a bigger tent and trailer.

We spent 6 nights here 3 of them over the bank holiday and although the site was full it didn't feel that way. Lots of space with loads of little hiding places.
Our boys 7 & 10 loved it for riding their bikes and hide and seek. They made loads of friends and for a change didn't want to go home! Toilets are cleaned daily and where ever you park there is a block not to far away with good hot showers.
We were expecting the worse as it poured down rain when we arrived and didn't stop till the early hours, so the place was swamped, but it dried out really quickly over the next few days.
The main thing we liked was you could explore the new forest by bike straight from the campsite. Loads of routes nearby and the village of Brokenhurst is a easy cycle even for our youngest. The 4 hour drive to get there was well worth the effort.

Roundhill is a large campsite. But don't let that put you off. It is on the site of the old Beaulieu airfield. Just outside the village of Brockenhurst in the middle of the New Forest. Very easy to find.
Having booked in and collected stickers for the tent and car, we were left to our own devices to find a spot. We spent about 30 minutes driving round the site (very slowly) to get out barings for the site, and to find our preferred pitching spot.
We were on a 9 night stay, so we wanted to get the right spot. There was plenty of places to choose from, and we ended up back at the first spot we identified. We are a family of 4 with a 5 year old and 3 year old with a Outwell Montana 6 tent with front extension.
We had booked a standard plot. Although the ground is a little bumpy in places we found a pretty flat spot with excellent drainage, as we were to find later in our holiday.
The junior fishing lake (pond!) was closed due to low levels of water. But if you pop down to the waters edge with some very small pieces of bread you will see some pretty large fish coming up to the surface.
During our stay we didn't see any New Forest ponies, but saw plenty of horses, cattle, rabbits, deer and donkeys. Be wary of the horses. We left our boot open (with no food in it), but we found a horse with his nose on the boot of our car, rummaging through our coats until it picked up the packet of baby wipes! Very funny for all those watching! including our boys.
There are lots of children riding around on their bikes, although most had helmets on, there was lots without, and even more riding without any kind of lights as dusk fell. So just be careful when driving around the site late at night.
We found the toilet blocks more than adequate and cleaned on a daily basis, and there was a mop and bucket left out for use if the floor in your shower block got particularly muddy - which it did during my stay, due to a big storm.
The showers were big enough for me an d1 of my children to comfortably shower. But it is a tight squeeze for an adult and 2 children as I found when I had to sort both of them. There was also plenty of toilet roll to be found in each of the toilet cubicles. The wardens were very friendly (I was bit wary of them based on some previous reviews I had read), but they were ensuring everyone's safety by making sure everyone is a safe distance apart, and for the welfare of the animals around the site.
On the night of the storm, the wardens drove round at 4am to ensure that everyone was okay. In the early evening an ice cream van came around the site, which seemed very popular, unfortunately for us it usually came just as we were about to eat.
There were lots of families on the site, but we had no problems with noise, I would say that the site was pretty quiet by 10pm, and didn't get lively again until about 8am. There are loads of things to do nearby. Beaulieu motor museum, Portsmouth docks, crabbing at keyhaven, fishing in a stream (nets, buckets and crablines boudht in Lyndhurst) which the kids could paddle in at Balmer Lawn.
Nearest laundrette 15 mins away in Lymington. Ferry to Isle of Wight in Lymington. Nearest big supermarket we found was Waitrose in Lymington (better choice than the Tesco Express in Brockenhurst). The traffic around lyndhurst was always busy.
When packing up to leave we found that we weren't pushed to get out of the site, we ended up leaving just after 12:30. We will hopefully be going to this campsite again, our boys loved it, and we could have left our tent toys at home.
They just played football, tennis, and splashed in puddles for the entire 9 days. On their first camping trip. And we loved it because they were happy.

This is a good site and will be going back 2011 Roundhill is a lively campsite, and covers a very large area. The ground itself was reasonably level, and there was plenty of cover offered by trees and bushes if required. The site is ideally situated for getting into the New Forest, There were lots of families on the site, but we had no problems with noise, I would say that the site was pretty quiet by 10pm, and didn't get lively again until about 8am.
There are loads of things to do nearby. Beaulieu motor museum, Portsmouth docks, crabbing at keyhaven, fishing in a stream (nets, buckets and crablines boudht in Lyndhurst) which the kids could paddle in at Balmer Lawn. The facilities were very good and well maintained - although to be fair it was at the end of the season and wasn't busy at all. We'd stay here again for sure but think we'd avoid the school holidays, I'd imagine it's a very popular site and as such probably noisy and the facilities might struggle to cope with demand.
Wildlife freely roams the site and we saw donkeys, cattle, horses and ponies. No traffic noise and lots of birds. The site is picturesque and with direct access to the forest many walks can be had. The staff were polite and very informative.
This is my favourite Forestry Commission New Forest campsite to date but as said earlier it's probably very different at peak times.

Roundhill is a lively campsite, and covers a very large area. There are three toilet blocks which offer basic but efficient facilities. Pitches are unmarked, you camp where you want, but with the provisio that you leave 6m between yourself and the next tent. This rule was largely adhered to. We went over the August bank holiday, when the site was full. There were occasionally queues for the toilets, particularly the ladies, and also on occasions, the 'pot wash' area water was tepid at best. The ground itself was reasonably level, and there was plenty of cover offered by trees and bushes if required. The site is ideally situated for getting into the New Forest, although Lyndhurst is best described as a permanent traffic jam. We enjoyed ourselves but will probably look for something a little quieter next time. Also, watch out for the Donkeys and Ponies; they really can undo zips on your tent!

We have just returned from our three night stay at Roundhill with two children. The site really is in the heart of the New Forest with Forest Ponies wandering through the site along with Donkeys and Cows! The site is open with some shelter from the trees surrounding. You can choose your own pitch which I imagine could be a bit tricky if it was at capacity.
The toilet blocks are okay. They are a little grubby but it is from inconsiderate people not cleaning up after themselves after walking in with muddy boots (I think some people wore them in the shower!) The blocks are cleaned regularly. The site is very quiet and the noise rule in, most part, is adhered to. The staff were very helpful when needed and were more than willing to offer advice and were seen around the site checking everything was okay.
Please note that this site is built on an old airfield and therefore you will need suitable pegs.
But overall a really lovely site even in the pouring rain!

Really enjoyed our family's first ever camping holiday at this campsite. Found the toilet block very good with hot water and rarely had to queue. The site seemed very spacious even when full and it was nice that the tents, caravans etc were kept well spaced apart. We have a big tent but didn't have any difficulty in finding a pitch. We camped Sunday to Thursday night and the most noise was children playing which we like anyway. Some untidy people around with one incident of dog poo noticed - please take it home with you dog owners! Make sure you fasten your tent up when away as several people had the donkeys raid theirs. Great seeing all the animals close up. Take a kite with you as there is a great field to fly it in.

Having never been camping before I took the plunge and agreed to spend 3 nights with my husband and 3 sons at Roundhill, along with my in-laws. I can honestly say I wish I had tried camping years ago!
Roundhill is a lovely site with loads of space to choose from. Not everywhere is suitable to pitch on as it is a bit bumpy in places but we easily found a lovely big space to erect 3 large tents together.
The kids loved the fact that horses, cows and the occasional donkey trooped through in the morning and back through at night. Although you have to make sure that you keep your food well stored as my father-in-law woke in the middle of the night to find a cow poking its head around in the kitchen area!
The website stated that the toilet/shower block had recently undergone a refurb and I found them to be a lot better and cleaner than I expected them to be in the middle of the forest! There is a mop and bucket left out for people to give the floor a quick once over after they have used the showers and most people did use them (obviously there was the occasional person that didn't but I just gave it a quick once over before getting in).
The only thing missing was a play area for the children but then again with 500 pitches on site it would have to be a very big one! And my children made their own fun and never once complained that they were bored.
There are some lovely walks in the surrounding area and it is only a short drive into Brockenhurst to the shops for essentials. There is also a lovely fish and chip shop in Brockenhurst for that evening that no-one wants to cook as well as a chinese and indian takeaway.
Brockenhurst also has some lovely pubs for lunch/dinner and a lovely little tearooms for the obligatory cream-tea!
I will definitely be visiting again!

We had a pleasant stay at the campsite but I'm not sure if we'd use it again. My positive comments are: staff were helpful; ponies/donkeys wandering the campsite were brilliant; location is excellent.
On the downside - finding a pitch is really hard as the ground is so bumpy; you can easily bottom-out the car in a lot of places; toilets and showers were very dirty; the campsite has a lot of rules but they aren't enforced (people camping right next to you, noise at night etc).

Booked a 4 night stay at the beginning of August and had the best time ever. Nice welcome with the usual don't list from the rangers due to staying in the the national park and then let loose to find a pitch. Even though our tent was large found a great pitch by the water tower. Ground is uneven but you can find gems within the field. Facilities were great nice hot showers 4 in each of the 3 block, no problem even at peak times. Toilets cleaned daily and a mop and bucket left if you left a mess. Washing up room with 6 sinks and even dog showers. The best part was living with the wildlife, ponies, cows and donkeys. They didn't bother you unless food was left in the open, or they sought shelter behind your tent. Fantastic drainage on the fields, poured all day Tuesday, cleared puddles by afternoon Wednesday. A great 5 days in the wild.
