Stayed here for 3 nights in early august. On arrival the wardens were friendly and helpful. Pitch was of a good size and water taps situated every couple of pitches which was handy. Toilets and showers were were pleasent and clean. Only criticism I had was the showers were of the push and release type, now I know a lot of sites have these but these ones only seemed to last a few seconds before you had to push the button in again to get more water. Only a small thing I know but I found it a pain. There's a playground to keep the kids happy but its situated at the top corner of the site which means from most of the pitches you cant see the playground which for us was a problem with having younger children. There's a small shop including reception that sells the usual everyday essentials and a pub opposite that done the usual bar meals and also cooked up a full english breakfast in the mornings. A great campsite if you visiting flamingo land, eden camp or castle howard as they`re all only a few miles down the road. Overall we had an enjoyable couple of days at this site and would go back again.

Just returned from an 8 night stay at this well laid out level caravan park. Generous size pitches. Very friendly and helpful staff. Clean ample shower/toilet block. Dog walk on site plus bridle way nearby for a longer walk. First time at this park and would definitely go again. Booked this stay by telephone, very efficient and was e mailed confirmation within minutes. Was not disappointed on arrival.

I spent 3 nights at the Black Bull campsite for the Pickering steam show, my second visit there. Telephone booking was friendly and efficient and I liked the backpacker rate. Although it is near a main road, the site is sheltered by trees and hedges and I didn't hear traffic. The site is very well run, and when I asked to borrow a shovel to clear up something, the owner came out and did it himself. The mens' toilet is kept sparkling clean and the other facilities look good. The Black Bull pub by the site is useful for food (including breakfast) and drink. Pickering is a lovely small town for big city dwellers to enjoy.

Nice size level pitches. We booked with family who brought their tent and very helpfully were pitched next to each other. Some pitches bit too far from facilities block if you have little ones with you. Nice little play park for the children on site. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There are supermarkets in pickering. There is a nice pub adjacent, child friendly serving good food at very reasonable prices with a nice beer garden.
The site is very handy for Pickering and we also visited flamingo land, just a short drive from site. We would recommend this site and would return again.

Stayed at the site on a whim as we were passing from staying near Whitby. The price was £16 for the night for the two of us and three dogs excellent value. The hardstanding pitch was excellent plenty of room the whole site looked in great condition. The toilet and showers were great and their was a warm welcome from the wardens.
We went for a meal in the on site pub which was great and washed down with four lovely pints of Black Sheep. Across the road is another bar and restaurant which we didn't try but gets good reviews. This is a site which is a great base to explore north Yorkshire at a good price, the only slight proviso is you will need to be slightly organised shopping wise but the lovely staff will get you a paper whilst you recover from the Black Sheep!

Very briefly: I picked this campsite last min because it's close to north yorks moors and as my son was travelling with us, decided the kids play area would be a big plus. I did have some reservations. I normally avoid places more geared up for caravans.
So firstly, it's a very caravan site. Regimented bays - like hotel rooms. This works fine for the tourers but with a tent I dislike being told where to pitch my tent. In fact, the bays in themselves are bad enough but being given a specific bay sucks. The bay itself has plastic down to help with wear and tear. Not natural and potentially very uncomfortable, a good job we had airbeds. Then these bays here are laid out like a terrace street and to add to the feeling that you would actually be better off in your own terraced house, in your own terraced street. The noise from the road down my own terrace street in the middle if a city is actually much much quieter. Being close to the main road can be a good point, but not when the sound pollution from the main road is ruining the feeling that you are getting away from it all then basically it's too close to the road.
Talking about pollution. Although we only booked for one night. The site didn't bother to tell us when we booked that on this specific day, there would be some industrial site work going on to fit a pipe or something. This basically meant that a generator or something similar was blaring out. We were planning on staying on site on day one but ended up going out for some peace and quiet. If only the site had said this was going on today, I would have picked a different site of course.
Now then, going back to the reason I picked this site over the other 3 or 4 I was checking out. The children's play area. Climbing frames, a slide and a couple of swings. It has never been a big deal to me - but now I have a young family I understand the benefit of having this feature. It means while one of us us cooking, our child can be distracted with the play area leaving him uninterested in the gas hob or the BBQ. If course this area is currently cordoned off for some maintenance work.
I can't really complain about the road. It's on the map, I just neglected to add two and two together, but paying full fee for one night only when the site knew well that the site would be as loud as a building site and that the children's area would also be the subject of men when power tools and out of bounds for its normal clientele is actually shambolic.
Hey it might only cost £18 but it's £18 that could have been spent at a different site.
Oh there was one redeeming feature: the shower and toilet block are good and clean- however you can't control the heat and the shower was much too hot for my little boy. I thought it was ok, but his unhappiness of the situation kind of outweighed my approval. I couldn't even cheer him up with a ride on the swing en route back to the tent.

What a great site this is, we were greeted by the friendly and helpful wardens on our arrival and shown to our sheltered hard standing pitch - couldn't believe our luck! Pitches are a very generous size and very well kept, with a dividing hedge to separate you from your neighbours.
Toilets and showers were kept to a high standard of cleanliness, and despite the park being full we never had to queue once.
The kids loved the games room with the table tennis, table football and pool table to play on with the friends they'd made on the site.
Ideally situated on the edge of pickering so you can day trip to whitby or Scarborough within half an hour no problem, as well as being close to Dalby forest which is a fantastic day out.
Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this site to anyone and I'm sure we'll be returning again in the not too distant future

Second visit and not disappointed. The site takes both tents and caravans and whilst we were there over the bank holiday weekend and it was virtually full it didn't feel like it. Pitches spacious, nice clean shower block with strong and hot showers. Small games room.
Very convenient for Dalby forest and the bike trails which are excellent
New bar and restaurant opened up over the road. Forgot the name but it did the spread of Pizza/Burger and other food. Extremely reasonable and nice.
Looks like this will become one of our regular haunts

Had a fabulous bank holiday weekend camping at The Blackbull Caravan Site.
We were 2 tents with electric hookup with a family of two adults, a 13 year old and 10 year old and another family of two adults and another 10 year old.
The site is a smallish site - but just the right size - not too many pitches which means not a noisy site which is important for tents, as all tenters will know - sound travels in a tent! The site was lovely, the low buzz of a few families in tents barbecuing and enjoying themselves and the rest of the pitches were mobile homes and caravans, which was just the right combination for a quiet site. It caters for all ages and has free wifi (so my 13 year old was happy).
We asked for two pitches side by side and this wasn't a problem when we booked. The pitches are flat, well maintained and individually defined by a small Hawthorne hedge, which ensures no one else creeps on to your pitch! I wish more sites did this! The prices for pitches and hook ups reasonable.
The toilet blocks were clean and were constantly being checked by the friendly site staff, which was really nice to see. They were heated so helped us warm up after the temperature dropped down to minus 4 on the Friday night - who would have thought that at the beginning of May! For those campers at the other end of the campsite (which we were) slightly away from toilet block, there are two handy porta loo's which were surprisingly clean and nice (handy for those middle of the night wee's!) There were around 6 large shower cubicles in the toilet block (which may not sound a lot, but was adequate even on a fairly busy bank holiday weekend as we didn't have to wait for a cubicle once) with endless free hot water. The sink units were clean and there were cloths provided to clean the sink down after you had used it, which everyone seemed to do, staff were also popping in and out to check everything was clean and cleaning up too. There was a baby changing facility also.
There was an adequate clean washing up area with around four or five sinks (which may not sound a lot again, but was adequate even on a fairly busy bank holiday weekend, we only had to wait for a sink once for few minutes but this was down to the fact that it was the Bank Holiday Monday and everyone had breakfast early and at the same time so that they could leave by 12 noon).
There was a launderette room too, but we didn't need to use that, so can't comment on this, but nice to know there was one if you needed to wash or dry anything out.
The small site shop had all the basic provisions you needed as well as a selection of camping equipment. They sold ice creams too and you could order warm croissants and newspapers fresh every morning. Again the staff in the shop/reception were very friendly and helpful and only too willing to give you advice and help. There was also a petrol station quarter of a mile down the road for anything else you may have forgotten ie firelighters for our BBQ etc. There is also a garden centre just down the road for camping equipment too.
There was a large games room for the kids with an air hockey table, pool table etc, along with two tables set up for the smaller ones with colouring pads and colouring materials (a nice touch so that all ages are accommodated for). Inside the games room was a vending machine (handy if you needed anything to eat or drink after the shop shut), and lots of local leaflets and guides on places to go and see, takeaways and places to eat. There is also a children's outdoor play area with swings and a large climbing tower with wooden bridge. The site staff do ask the children to leave the play area when it goes dark or 10pm which ever is first, which keeps the noise levels down and shows consideration for other campers. The staff also walk round the site at 11 pm to give a friendly reminder to those still making noise ensuring the site is quiet and those in tents can get to sleep! This is very welcome and I wish all sites adhered to this!
The Blackbull pub is 100 yards from the site entrance (no noise at last orders time either). There was a good basic menu and everything was reasonably priced and staff friendly. Black Sheep beer on tap so the men were happy! The portions were fab especially the steak pie (with half a cow in it) and the Yorkshire Pudding with beef was the size of a small boat! There is also another restaurant across the road calked Spencer's which is meant to be very nice and also reasonable, but we didn't have time to visit it. We ordered an Indian takeaway from Spice For you and drove 5 mins into Pickering to pick it up.
Only a short 5 minute drive into Pickering (about a 20 min walk), or a short bus ride ( bus stop just outside the entrance). Lovely butchers, bakers, tea rooms and gift shops, a Lidl and a Co-Op too. There is a short stay car park opposite Lidl and a long stay car park (ideal for parking while you go on the trains) down the side of Lidl opposite their car park. On certain weekends there are steam train gala's, so look out for these. We caught the steam train to Grosmont, changed tracks and caught the train to Whitby for the day, which was superb!
Lovely walks in the area in Dalby Forest (there is a daily charge there), but we went to Cropton, and to Keldy Forest on a lovely walk (map bought from the shop), saw slow worms and Great Crested Newts! Well recommended!
The only recommendation to improve at all, would be a couple of wash cubicles, but I used the disabled cubicle with the sink in - which was adequate.
All in all a lovely site! We will be back! I hope this review helps you. Thanks Jane.
