Taking advantage of the 21 degrees plus(!) April weather, we headed down to Dorset for an early season weekend away in the tent. A pre-arranged bike ride in Wareham Forest, and a planned visit to nearby Monkey World, lead to the choice of Wareham Forest Tourist Park as our camping venue. It was certainly well placed for access to the Forest and Gore Heath and I'd recommend the location as a base for biking and walking in this area (take a map though!).

The campsite, sorry tourist park, met expectations - clean, organised. And expensive. Not many (<5!) tents meant that we had a choice of area to pitch up in, and they were all flat, grassy and nicely surrounded by trees (watch out for the pine cones!).

Staff were friendly. Toilet blocks were clean. Showers were great, and free. Closest pub did good food.

Pricey though. If you just want to camp, go to the toilet, have a wash, be a bit relaxed about your departure time. No complaints apart from that though.

We stayed for two nights at this lovely campsite to meet up with friends that were camping. The pitch size was good and the facilities nice and clean. We even had a swim in the pool, although it was a little chilly! The shop was fine if a little pricey. It is a great site to take bikes as we cycled into Wareham and back through Wareham Forest. A word of warning, the cycle maps and signs on the gates are not easy to follow, we got lost! Luckily we found some people with a good map and found the road. A great site I would recommend to people with young children.

Just returned from this site having had mixed weather.

Site is really peaceful with beautiful surroundings. Staff are very friendly and helpful - lady on reception got me some paracetamol from shop even though it was closed and warden let my 3 year old sit in his tractor - you can imagine the joy!

All facilities as advertised and there's so much to do in the area. You do have to drive but it's worth it to experience the diversity - slate and fossils to beautiful coves and sandy beaches.

Everyone we spoke to in the area was helpful and friendly and did not feel we'd been subjected to the usual seaside rip-off.

Would definitely recommend and will be going back - the dog will need a month to recover.

This was our fifth visit to Wareham Forest and once again we had an enjoyable stay despite 5 solid days of rain!

The site is extremely well run by the owners and the team of Wardens - many of whom we recognise every year. All the facilities are clean and well maintained with plenty of hot water. The grounds are well kept and clean and tidy. The site was extremely quiet at night in the caravan area.

The pool is large and warm - ish! There is not a lifeguard but they are very strict about parents accompanying children and sticking to the sensible rules.

The shop is well stocked and there is a daily delivery of newspapers, croissant etc.

The tent area is less regimented and tents were pitched randomly with no clear spacing - this did seem quite crowded in places. After the rain it was also very wet in places too.

There is so much to do for families in the surrounding area without having to travel far.

On the downside the tariff seemed quite high with annoying extras for the awning and dog.

This is a five star site. Professional staff and top-notch facilities. In my opinion design of shower block really fantastic and should be a model for other sites to follow.

Only 'downside' for us was that it was just a bit too good as in pricey. We don't really need the sort of sophistication that this site offers e.g. pool. I cannot remember what we paid but it was the most I have ever paid for camping (including £2.50 per night for our very wee dog who did not use any of the facilities).

Staff on site were friendly and professional - always keen to help and offer advice.

Watch out for getting caught for speeding. Dorset is awash with speed camera's (mobile and fixed). We went out for a pleasant evening drive as it was too early for bed - result £60 and 3 points - just south of Wareham.

We visited Wareham Forest at the end of August, beginning of September 2010 and found the site to be excellent.

The pitches are large and level and the overall site is kept in very good order.

There is a good outdoor heated pool with a smaller paddling pool ideal for babies which is located next to a well stocked shop which sells fresh croissants etc. Every morning. There is a games room adjoined to the shop with access to the pool which has table tennis tables to occupy people.

There are plenty of dustbins which are emptied regulary and a very good recycling area and lots of fresh water taps around the park.

One day a week a mobile fish and chip van arrives at the site and they are very nice.

The toilets, showers, pot washing areas were always immaculate and we never had to wait for the showers.

It is an ideal base for visiting Dorset.

This is a very nice site which I would highly recommend and will definitely use again, the only thing I will say is take a torch as its very dark at night and you will need rock pegs on the hardstanding. 10/10

We visited this site in the summer holidays having read numerous reviews. I am newish to camping and although we had a thoroughly enjoyable time, it wasn't quite as I'd expected from the reviews. I have stayed on a few other sites in the past and this was probably good rather than great, in my opinion.

There was a well stocked shop selling freshly warmed croissants and pain au chocolate for breakfast every morning, which was fab.

There was a lovely swimming pool, which although we had mixed weather we did manage to use a few times and the kids loved it. It was warm, clean and also had a little splash pool for the tots. There was no life guard.

In trying to get two family tents next to each other, we had to pitch about as far from the toilet block as you could get. With several little ones this was an absolute pain. I think maybe the site could have been designed a bit better, with at least one of the two blocks a bit more centrally located.

They are both towards the entrance. Having said that it was in a nice open area and you were free to pitch where you liked, although there is a strict rule about having tents 6 metres apart, which we got into trouble about.

It was nice and peaceful in the evenings, with all the older children generally disappearing from the open area in front of our tents by the time darkness fell at about 9:30pm. People were generally quiet after that.

The toilet blocks were reasonably clean but were a bit grubby by the evening. However, it was quite a damp few days and this doesn't help the situation. There was a mop and bucket on hand to wipe down the shower cubicles and I did see someone giving the whole place a spruce up late one night. We generally used the main block, which is getting a bit tired now. The smaller block is newer looking and fresher feeling.

There's a nice short trot along a woodland trail, which even the 2 year old managed. This was a slow amble over the course of an hour. It wouldn't satisfy an intrepid explorer though! The Sika Trail is close by, but we didn't manage to use this.

One of the main disappointments was the children's play area. It is quite basic (a climbing frame, 1 baby swing and 1 grown up swing). It is not at all fenced in which would have been safer feeling for the little ones. It is a long way from the main pitching areas. The main problem however is that they have used what appeared to be building sand, with grit in, to lay under the whole place! Knees, clothes, feet and hands were getting into a terrible mess every time we used it! Not at all child friendly. It didn't seem to be well used any time we visited.

Good local places to visit: Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove, Tower Park in Poole for rainy days, Tyneham Village (very interesting but only open on certain days).

Overall, we had a lovely time but I would probably try somewhere else next time.

This site has a number of very good features. There are numerous flat pitches with an option to camp in the woods if you want.

The speed limit is 5mph and the wardens will have a word with people exceeding it. This makes it very good for kids and there were lots riding their bikes around the site.

It also has a reasonable play field at the front of the site - so good for kids to play on without disturbing everyone else - the downside is that it's further away from your tent/caravan so for younger ones you may feel more need to supervise them playing.

The location is very good for walking in Wareham Forest which also has many cycle trails.

Wash rooms were very good, weren't spotless but it was a very busy time and they were cleaned regularly.

Downsides were fairly minor. One is that both washrooms are at the front of the site which can mean a long walk if you are at the other end of the site. The second is that the site is fairly expensive for camping in high season.

When we were there they seemed to be having trouble with the drains - this manifested itself with an unpleasant smell in the vicinity of the toilet block and on one day over most of the site. Being charitable I'd assume this is a temporary problem but if visiting again I wouldn't risk pitching anywhere near the toilets just in case it's an ongong problem.

Some of the things that the site offers are:

Swimming Pool – There is an outdoor heated swimming pool on site that was always busy, there are not any lifeguards. The pool was constantly checked and corrected if required.

Shop – There is an excellent little shop on site, which has a good stock of food and drink, along with the usual caravanning items.

Toilets - There were 2 large toilet areas, with plenty of toilets, showers and sinks all were very clean, even in the 1st week of the school holidays they were never that busy.

Play area - The Play area is pretty good, with a huge field for playing ball games, a half pipe and a rather large fort type building.

Other facilities include a games room, Wi-Fi (which is useful as the phone signal was non-existent). There is also a very poor TV signal. I actually had the whole week without phone or TV (and I felt so much more relaxed for it).

There is a Chip Van that turns up on a Tuesday, there were big queues for this, in all honesty you could go into Wareham and pick some up in the same time it took to queue (and the quality from Wareham was considerably better).

There are plenty of staff on site who are always polite helpful, the site reception has a wealth of information of things to do locally.

Position - The Site is located around 3 miles outside Wareham, right in the middle of Wareham Forest, The site really does have a forest feel to it with some little walks around the site, but also a get at the back that takes you directly into Wareham Forest which is ideal for walking or Biking. If you don’t take bikes, you can hire them and one company will deliver them to site.

You do need to Drive to get to everything, but there is an abundance of things to do and places to visit, including:

Weymouth, Swanage, Poole, Durdle Door, Wareham, Tank Museum, Monkey world, Corfe Castle & Railway to name a few.

I love the fact that it doesn’t have a bar as it really was peaceful in the evenings, I never heard any noise from anyone else, a very family orientated site.

To sum up, it really is one of the best sites I have visited and is centrally located to visit such a great area.

We could pitch anywhere on the field, which was quite nice as we could take up as much space as we liked but not sure how it would be in the height of the season.

The outdoor swimming pool/area was well kept and we were lucky with the weather as we spent most of the day there. Toilets and showers were OK, but did tend to get a little bit grubby by the evening.

Site was great for children to run about but as there's so many trees it obviously attracted midges so the evening was a constant act of waving your hands in front of your face (I'm sure this isn't a problem if you're happy to sit inside in the evening)

Would we go back? Yes, now that we have a caravan that we can sit in the evening!
