Great campsite right on Coniston Water. Basic but great for the weekend. Very helpful and accommodating staff (we arrived quite late but they waited for us). No booking system which is a bit unfortunate. No set pitches either, but this was helpful as we could choose where to locate and how to orientate the tents. Toilets kept clean and stocked. Can't comment on the showers, we were only there for 2 nights so didn't bother! There washing up facilities are useful. Only 1 tumble dryer which was a bit of a problem as the weekend we went there was torrential ran and it felt like everyone wanted to use it! Would definitely use again.

This is obviously a marmite site. Potentially it could be the best site in the lakes without doubt. It has size, terrain, natural beauty and location. All it needs is some TLC and a couple of rules that would make it universally appealing. I found the reception a bit unfriendly and sadly the facilities were not up to spec for me. Groups rule here and can be a little intimidating for the family unit. Luckily we found a spot next to a rough bit of ground so we had a little room to stretch. The lake is yards away and you can forget the downsides to the site as soon as you look at the views. I have to admit though this place would not be so popular if it did not have something going for it which is proof that one mans meat is another mans poison. Id rather pay more and see some investment but might avoid it for a while yet.

Returned to Old Hall second weekend in June with 2 mates on a mountain biking holiday. Last time I came was with my parents some 24 years ago! Nothing has changed, which suits me just fine.
As others have said, great location, simply brilliant. As bikers we are spoilt for choice.
You cant book, as all they ever say is just turn up, they never turn anyone away. We arrived on the Thursday, so had plenty of choice to pitch. Rock pegs are needed as the ground is very rocky.
The site is very big and extends into the trees at the far end so you will always manager to get a pitch. There are no hook ups.
The toilet block, whilst old, is clean and has plenty of showers, toilets and sinks. However, if you pitch at the extremities of the site it can be a bit of a walk to get there.
From the entrance to the site, there is a level path all the way into Coniston Village, we cycled into the village every night to sample the real ales on offer at the Black Bull (home of Coniston Bluebird Ale) and had no problems returning.
The site gets VERY busy on weekends and is popular with groups, there is no enforced rule for silence after a certain time (which was great for us).
I would think twice about bringing my kids here as it can get a bit 'lively', but for a group, it cant be beaten.

Situated alongside the breath taking lake Coniston with a background of jawdropping mountain scenery, it is probably the most beautiful campsite you will ever visit. No need to pre-book as this is a fairly large site with no fixed pitches.I arrived on friday during the half term holidays and the site was very busy.It is a case of finding a place to pitch your tent when its a busy weekend as this site is very popular with return trade.
From previous experience I try to pitch on the higher ground becouse if it rains heavily ,you will get flooded on the lower parts of the site.I also suggest you take plenty of extra strong tent pegs to penetrate the very hard ground ,inorder to errect your tent.
The location is perfect and it really is within easy walking distance of Coniston town centre. The spar shop at the local petrol station is very reasonably priced and well stocked(15 x cans of Carling 440 mls £7.50 bargain). I also highly recommend Harrys Bar in Coniston for a superb meal.
The facilities are adequate at this site but dont expect luxuries! At £17 for 2 adults and a 3 year old child( per night ) you may expect better facilities but remember this is a working farm and farmers dont like spending money. Also try getting a smile out of pat butcher who runs the reception/ shop as I could`nt.
In the reviews for this site I have seen a few comments regarding rowdy behaviour at this site.I think this is a little harsh as you are always going to get abit of noisy behaviour where ever you go to becouse people are on holiday to have fun.
I will be going back here soon and know that weather permitting I will have a good time.

My girlfriend and I stayed at this site during the last Bank Holiday in May 2008. It is a decent site in a good location with excellent scenery across Coniston water and with nearby pubs and grocery amenities in the village. The Spar in Coniston has it's own butchery - good fresh meat for barbecues albeit a bit pricey. Moreover, the Sun pub is a good spot for a quiet drink, just above the village centre.
However, I would caution those thinking about staying at this site during peak periods. The number of people and tents allowed on the site seemed well in excess of the site's capacity. As such, be prepared to trawl about for a decent pitch on this open site and become very friendly with your neighbouring occupants at these times.
We decided to pitch towards the sheltered area, through the woods, at the back of the site. The pitches are quite stoney so bring a mallet if you opt to situate yourself here. To our disgust, the toilets and washing facilities here lacked maintenance, unlike the facilities on the main site which were kept clean throughout. On each of our three mornings there was either no or limited (trickling) water at the rear site facilities with peak demand resulting in a failure of the water pressure. Consequently, it was a rather dire situation with regards to flushing toilets, washing dishes etc. Don't expect toilet paper either. I imagine that this situation is only limited to peak times but perhaps could have been avoided by not accepting so many campers onto the site.
The site is perhaps a victim of its own success and therefore needs greater controls on the numbers being allowed to set up camp. The ambience was more Festival like in nature rather than the desired calm typically experienced at other sites in the Lakes. Despite this, I will certainly go back outside of peak times as it's prime location is why we went there in the first place.
Essentially, it is an ok site in an excellent location but don't expect to feel relaxed here at peak times.

This is a handy site for visiting Coniston as it is only a 15 minute walk from the town.
It is a very open site set at the side of Coniston Water.
You can camp anywhere as there are no marked pitches however near to the toilet block (half way down) seems to be a popular spot. The clean showers take 50p pieces and last quite a long time and are a good shower. However there isn't soap or hand drying is the toilets! There are pot washing facilities and a washer/dryer for clothes.
The shop seemed to well stocked but there is a petrol station just outside town with a shop attached that is better stocked and cheaper.
For a meal and drink go the the Black Bull which does great food and also brews the local Coniston Bluebird Bitter. Well worth a look.

We really enjoyed this campsite. We visited in April 2007 and we had amazing weather. Really spacious campsite and you had the freedom to pitch where you like not like some sites where you have a numbered pitch, after all camping is all about freedom! We pitched as close as possible to the lake for enjoyment of tranquil evenings, and we wernt dissapointed. The site is a bit hilly so take your time looking for ground with a flat level. The shower block was at a good standard, nice warm showers and clean too. The small shop on site will give you change for the shower 50p and the shop and site people are really friendly and helpful. The site is on a working farm and you have to walk or drive through various breeds of creatures when entering or leaving the site, cows and peacocks etc.
Coniston is a short 5-10 min walk along a flat path crossing a few fields with sheep in them so best keep doggy on lead.
Pubs are fab and coniston pier is worth a visit too.
All in all , no complaints and looking forward to visiting again.

Coniston Hall is a very large campsite. We arrived for easter weekend in 2007 and it was very busy. However we kept on driving through the campsite and came to wooded area at the far end where we pitched our tent in a spacious area far enough away from the nearest tent. The advantages to camping in the wood are that it is a lot more sheltered and because it's further away from the facilities, many people choose not to camp there so you can find a good spot. There is a washing up point and toilet block in the wood so you don't have go back through the campsite. If we needed to go to the campsite shop etc, we got in the car and drove back through- simple! Some people wouldn't do this but hey, a 20 minute walk or a 1 minute drive. Can't say anything about the showers etc because we didn't use them, say what you like but we were content with a wash in the toilet block in the woods. We were only there 2 days.
If you plan on using this campsite as a base for walking then prepare for a good walk to get to the main road before your big walk. The campsite sits on the other side of a whacking great big field which you have to go through to get in or out. Oh, and it's on a slope too (down to the lake) so if you're on your way out, you have to walk uphill to the main road. Again, we drove, even on the day we went up Old Man, we drove into the village and parked up. Just much easier that way.

Reading the other reviews here and maybe we were just very unlucky.
We camped here on a summer weekend and it was absolutely packed out. This would have been ok if there weren't several loud groups - one particular group were up and noisy till about 3:00am on both nights.
The facilities are central but as it's a very large site that can mean you are a long way from them. They were also in pretty grim condition - filthy dirty and with the showers working intermittently, though still swallowing your 50p. After spending £1.50 on failing showers my girlfriend resorted to washing the soap off her in the sink.
The location of the site is very good - right on the lake and a short walk to Coniston village. I will definitely avoid it during school holidays though.

Visited this site during the busy bank holiday period! Big mistake! People just kept coming and coming, there didn't seem to be any restriction on how many campers were allowed. It was far too busy, too many tents all squashed together like sardines. No privacy, too much noise, the road in and out of the site was like the M6! Toilet/shower facilities though ok are just not adequate for the amount of people. Continuous queues for showers and basins, only 3 plugs for hairdryers which were in constant use. Big groups allowed which added to the noise factor. In fact the site seemed to attract those who like playing their car radios out loud whilst sitting at their tents! Deep joy. Only once bank hol monday was over and the site emptied a bit did we realise we could actually see Lake Coniston through the trees, before then tents blocked the view! On the plus side, you can walk into village from site easily, Scenery beautiful, site owners friendly, (weird little shop on site which sells really random things!) Quick booking in and out. Not sure if we would go back.
