It rained lots but although there were puddles the ground drained quickly. Lack of mud has been a key feature of camping this year!
It is a huge site but you cannot book in advance. We were here just before the holidays and it was fine. You decide where to pitch and I saw no restrictions. Just make sure you can get the tent pegs into the ground before you pitch.
The facilities are old but clean and plentiful. The clothes dryers were a useful feature. They work on 50ps. There is a little shop on site for essentials and the walk into Coniston is lovely. It is along the Cumbria Way - well signposted and good underfoot.
We will return to this site, probably off peak as it must be popular with families and we are old grumps.

Went with a friend and our teenage sons, weather was sunny we found a perfect pitch on a hill looking down at the lake with a woodland for the back garden brilliant.
It was the first time camping for us and we had not brought much just ourselves and the dog, the other campers were fantastic, helped pitch the tent and gave us a morning cuppa tea.
Hired a boat one day and went horse riding up the old man on the second perfect. Came to relax with nature and was not disappointed.

Stayed at this site for 1 night. The site is quite large and natural with one side running parallel with lake coniston, although you can see the lake you are separated from it by a field. You can pitch were you like which we prefer. There are some great pitches and the site is plenty big enough for you to have some privacy and distance between tents.
The toilet block is to one end of the site and can be a trek. The showers are 50p and give you plenty of time to have a shower. The shower cubicles are quite small and my clothes got a little wet by the shower spray which was annoying. There are quite a few showers in the block and it would be better with fewer showers and larger cubicles with perhaps a bench. The block was clean but felt quite old and bare but it did the job.
Short walk into coniston 15 min, little village with a few pubs and served good quality food.
Would visit this site again due to its close proximity to coniston but could be better.

Second time I have stayed at this site, I have read bad reviews regarding this site in the past but have found them without grounds. I find this site, set in a spectacular location, is a well run site with excellent bathroom facilities.
Visited in July last year and again in Ma this year ( went to minus 3 on the first night Brrrrr!) Stayed for three nights, site owner gave us the option of paying nightly in case we couldn`t cope with the cold.
Ideal location for walkers, boaters, swimmers, and also a short walk to the village where there are a choice of pubs with local brews to warm you up. Will be visiting again in July ( Hope it`s a bit warmer )
Site fee is £8 per person, refundable £5 deposit for the barrier to access the site.
Well worth visiting.

An impromptu trip to the Lake District lead us to Coniston and Coniston Hall Camp Site for one night. We arrived on a whim, paid £16 for two adults and a car and left a £5 deposit for the car-barrier system.
As it was the back end of the season, we had plenty of choice as to where to camp. The first day was very warm so the ground was ok, but after a night of rain, it did become muddy quite quickly, so I'd imagine it could get quite bad if the site was busy.
Didn't use the facilities really, but the shower block looked like it did the job and pot-washing sinks were available outside.
As other have said, its a very relaxed site which suited us very well. I personally prefer the very basic 'farmer's field' sites that act more as a base from which to roam around rather than be the main focus of the trip so was very pleased.
There's a direct pathway to Coniston village which took around 15-20 minutes. Coniston is small, but great for pubs. The Black Bull, with its own 'Coniston Brewing Company' brewery out the back suited our real ale needs, whilst other pubs were fairly quiet.
I would imagine they have a great atmosphere in the height of summer. We had a reasonably-priced meal at The Black Bull, although we gave The Sun round the corner a miss due to its slightly higher prices(it looked like a bit more of a 'foodie' place in all honestly, so if that's what you like, it would be good).
Overall, a basic campsite that does the job in a stunning setting. If you look for a more 'holiday camp' feel to your trip, then I'd avoid, but is a great place from which to explore the Lake District.

We stay at this site every year at the start of October to do the Lakeland trail run. Normally there are very few other campers as the weather is usually a bit poor that time of year. The toilet block is up a hill so it can be a bit of a walk. They now charge 50p, although they used to be free. The block is quite old but clean enough.
This year the weather was quite good so the site was quite busy. There was a real issue with noise. I recommended this site to my sister a few years back; she went at a more peak time and had the same problem.
There is no policing of the site and they do not say they don't accept groups - so if you want lively camping this might be the place for you!
Great location, next to Coniston Water. Great walking and biking nearby.
Car barrier with a £5 deposit for the access card. 4 washing up sinks.
Short walk to one pub, Coniston is a bit further away but worth the walk along a traffic free route.

Good site for camping - I mean proper camping. No EHU means no noisy tellys next to you, but the 'group' aspect can be a problem. We had to ring the site manager at 3 in the morning to get them to quieten down one group from across the site.
Lovely location, great for kids if they like the water. Toilets were clean and adequate. My gripes would be so many lazy people driving to the toilets (not the fault of the site) and the amount of small pieces of litter left around. The owners do not seem to check the ground for bottle tops, sweet wrappers, old pegs etc. Charging a £1 for a kayak is a first for me too.
Overall worth the location.

Why do people go to the lake district? For the fantastic views, small villages with good pubs and lakes that's why! If you want a site that can deliver all these things then this is it!
Sure it can get busy, yes the ground is hard, the toilets are basic (clean though), the shop is tiny yet seems to sell everything, but above all, on a morning when you wake up, you can see the old man of coniston behind you, wander to the lakesdide with a cuppa and stare across the fantastic views of bluebirds resting place.
I have been going to this site for over 20 years and yes nothing has changed, that's why I like it so much!

We went to Coniston Hall camp site as a last minute decision to go camping in the lakes. Arriving on the Friday there was plenty of room during a busy weekend in the first couple of weeks of the summer holidays. Saturday and Sunday it did start to get very busy as you would expect.
The campsite is very large and well situated near to Coniston town. There is a path through the fields to nearby Coniston where there is an excellent selection of pubs (Black Bull is excellent for food and beer, as is The Sun) and shops (Tesco express, Co-op). It is well located to explore Coniston lake/Old Man/coppermines and other walks around Coniston and surrounding lakes. The site is right next to Coniston lake with small beach type areas which were lovely in the sunshine, lots of kids and adults were swimming, boating in the lake.
The facilities were fine, I'm not sure if they have electric hook ups as we never use it so didn't ask. The shower blocks and toilets were big and clean - standard camping facilities as you'd expect. You pay 50p for a shower, which is fine as the campsite itself is quite cheap, and you get plenty of hot water. There is a shop at the farm selling groceries and camping bits and pieces like torches etc. The staff were friendly, offering advice and directions of where to visit. You do need to pay £5 deposit for a card to get on and off the site with your car - you get this back when you leave and it makes sense to control who is coming and going.
I disagree with some reviews on here that say it is like a music festival, it wasn't like that when we went at all, it was busy with some chatter and music but we were asleep for 11/12 with no noise problems.
Overall, really pleased with the campsite; great central location; good value for money. We would definitely use this site again.

Been to this site quit a number of times. I like it. The site is on the shores of coniston lake. Very good location.
I don't think it's for everyone though. Would not take kids their.
the facilities are next to basic. Like I mentioned, not for kids ( family's )the best time to go is when kids are at school.
Coniston is about 3/4 of a mile away. It takes about 20 minutes to walk into the village from the site. The village is only small but their is a few nice pubs / inns to visit. I like the black bull inn. Good food and good beer. In this inn they have a micro brewery where they brew their own beer.
Coniston hall is a good campsite in a very nice place but be warned it's not for everyone.
