Just returned from a weekend at Scotgate, our first visit. Overall, we were very impressed. The facilities block is amongst the best I've ever experienced on a campsite. Lovely and warm despite oustide temperatures of -3 C; and hot water as soon as you turned the tap.
Hardstanding pitches for campervans and caravans - most of these were a good size, although there was one area specifically for motorhomes where the pitches did look on the small side.
Shop and cafe on site but these were closed for the winter when we were there
The site is in a great location. Views of the fells in all directions and endless possibilities for walking without moving the van. It is also well located for mountain biking at Whinlatter.
We ate at the local pub, 'The Royal Oak'. Friendly service and good pub food - excellent portion sizes. We didn't have room for pudding despite having spent all day walking in the cold!
Only slight negative is that there is some road noise from the A66. It's close proximity to the A66 makes it really easy to get to but does provide a bit of background noise.

We spent a weekend here in December and it's perfectly suited to winter touring. There are lots of hard standing pitches and the shower facilities are superd. Some pitches have personal waste and water supplies, as well as TV hook-ups.
On site there is a shop and cafe, although they were closed in the winter season. Nearby the two pubs offer a warm welcome and decent meals.
This is perfect walking country, with some of the best mountain scenery on the doorstep, as well as being just a few miles from Keswick.
Excellent site. Will certainly return!

Didn't book in advance so there were no hardstandings left - camped on grass which was quite boggy.
However the campsite was reasonably priced and well kept. The main thing was the toilet and shower facilities - which allow for all year camping. They are warm, clean and allow you to get sorted during bad weather in the lakes.
The nearby pub in Braithwatie is fine for evening meals/drinks. Within minutes you can be in the beautiful and hardly visited Newlands Valley which is excellent for walking, mountain biking and kayaking on Newlands Beck if there's enough water.

A word to describe Scotgate. Vallhala,
Shangi-la, Avalon. Heaven on earth?
In terms of camping experiences, this ones biblical, so be prepared to get all emotional and dewey eyed.
For a start off. Its flat and free draining. And Skiddaw is front and centre. Its off the A66 and 10 minutes from Keswick.
Well stocked shop, licensed cafe(with wide screen tv's), world class toilets/showers, all perfect for newbie stay-cationers.
And as for us hardy extreme campers. I never new love like this before.
No electric hook up for tents. Don't know how I survived.
One of the best in the UK.

An excellent site with excellent facilities. My partner was a 1st timer at camping and this was a great site for someone trying camping for the 1st time. We had mixed weather during our stay, Sun, rain, wind and cold over the Agust bank holiday week end. Its a popular site so timing is everything. It great if you want to go mountain biking, wallking or shopping in Keswick. Its not a cheap site, but its worth it.
It is easy to find and it is near the main road which leads to the motorway. Its not a biggest site nor is it the smallest.

Booked the site for a weekend away to try the new van. Only booked here as the camping and caravan club site in keswick was fully booked.
We will return to this lovely site - very quiet, excellent facilities - some of the best I have seen. Facilities also included a small cafe which seemed popular although we did not use. Staff were very friendly and helpful and very apologetic that we had to move pitches although this was no hardship at all. Nice field for tents and excellent hard standings for caravans and campers. Lovely walk into Keswick (arounf 40 mins and flat) Very peaceful and has really changed our opinion of commercial sites.

We stayed at this campsite for 3 nights at the start of our holiday. I couldn't fault it. The site was lovely and clean and the staff couldn't be more helpful. When I couldn't get a picture on my TV, the lovely young man managed to keep a straight face when he told me there was no longer an analogue signal, and then promptly helped me to set up my digibox. I would thoroughly recommend it!
The site is on a public bus route into Keswick, although on the second day, we did take the lovely walk through the fields into the town.

This was the furthest North we have camped in the Lakes so far, so were looking for a site with plenty to do around it without driving. We arrived checked in and were escorted to our huge pitch by very help full and chatty staff then shown where all the facilities were.
We usually camp on grass with no services as it feels more natural but our stay was meant to happen in December but we had to postpone it*.
After reading all the reviews on this site we had a good idea of what we were going to be doing each day and plenty of backup options if the weather came bad! This site is the second nearest to Whinlatter Forest so we spent a day walking around there before calling off at the pub for tea.
The facilities were good for the price we paid but we often had a no loo roll situation or door lock broken but the site was full and there were plenty other toilets to use! On our last morning we treated our selves to a full English at the on site café to set us up for the day which was great.
You can hear the main road all the time when on this site. I would also suggest speed bumps around the site as cars were flying round and we saw two near misses with children on bikes. There were also a number of commercial vans sign written on the site which was also a let down.
*on a side note, when we rearranged our booking the member off staff I spoke to was not very helpful and told us we would be squeezed in between two tourer pitches for our stay. Which I questioned as it sounded to me like we were going to be parked on space which was not usually used for camping!
Before we set off I confirmed our booking over the phone and queried whether we would have enough room for our awning. To be told no that it was not included and our pitch was not big enough! I stated that my van was only 5m long and my awning smaller so I would be occupying the same (if less) space as a car and caravan. The lady couldn't get her head round this so I gave up!
On arriving at the site the chap who showed us to our pitch asked us which side our awning went on, so I told him we were not allowed to have an awning! He looked shocked then we realised why! Pitch number 2 one of the biggest! Enough room for two of my vans with awnings and space to sit out!

Stayed here for 3 nights. Can see why people keep on returning. There are 2 pubs and a restaurant all within 1000metres of site. Bus stop outside.
Very clean - did not try food on site. I am not a hiker but like a 2-3 mile walk and found 3 of those very easy. Walk to Keswick very safe and pedestrianised just over 2 miles.
Walked along stream at back of site to pub at Swinside very nice walk partly along a road but very quiet only saw 2 cars. Another walk was over bridge at side of site slightly up to hills for about 2 miles then we veered left and ended up at swinside again.
The bus dropped off hikers outside of site so obviously this area is a starting point for more serious walkers.

Just returned from this campsite after a 4 night stay. I looked in at Scotgate, where I've camped before, and was put off by the crowded tent fields, now that more caravan space has been designated.
So I decided to book in at Braithwaite Bridges, Scotgate's 'overflow' site. I didn't regret it. The site has 2 main areas: a front field which is sometimes used for D of E/Scout groups for one night at a time, and a huge back field which is pretty and very quiet.
During the 4 days I was there, often there were only 5 or 6 tents in an enormous space, giving a great sense of freedom and peace. I know it gets busier in the school holidays though.
The fields are well screened by trees and quite sheltered from the wind, though midges are are problem in the evening as there is a stream nearby, but then where are they not a problem in the Lakes in summer?
The facilities block is very good, with about 10 toilets each for ladies and gents, and 3 showers in each, with about 8 washbasins, hand driers and a socket for hairdryers in the ladies (as I camped alone I don't know about the gents). It is kept spotlessly clean. The showers were free with plenty of hot water at any time, though be warned, put your shoes up on the bench with your clothes or they'll get wet as the water runs down the tiles!
There looks to be a site office and small store in the block which is only open at peak season; I had to walk up to Scotgate, about half a mile, to book in, buy supplies or hire/exchange freezer blocks for the coolbox.
They hire these at £1 deposit each, and 20p for a re-freeze exchange, which I think is good value. Of course if it's pouring with rain you could go in the car, but as I had 4 nights/5 days of good weather I always walked up.
The main shop is well stocked and also licensed so if you fancy wine or beer with your meal that can be bought, and the beer and white wines come chilled. They also have a cafe at the Scotgate site which I didn't try but it looked really good and prices seemed reasonable.
July counts as Peak season even before the school holidays, so it cost me £11. 85 per night for one person, one tent and a car, not the cheapest fee, but for the quality and cleanliness of the facilities I think it was acceptable.
There are loads of lovely walks both high and low level from the gates of the campsite. Keswick is 2 miles away, close enough to walk, and has a good range of shops/restaurants.
There are also 3 pubs serving food within about 15 minutes walk: one at Portinscale and 2 at Braithwaite. I cooked for myself some of the time but tried the meals in the Farmers Arms and the Royal Oak, both very good home cooked food.
Overall a lovely site. The 2 groups of young people who stayed one night each were no problem; they arrived tired, pitched, cooked, messed about and went to bed early, and were up and off the next morning by 8. 30. Besides, camped on the back field I was quite a long way away and couldn't be disturbed even if they'd been noisy, which they weren't.
I shall definitely return to this well run and peaceful site.
