First time camping in over 30 years, having just sold our nice motorcaravan and purchased a really basic tent. The weather was absolutely lousy (the rest of the country was having good weather) but really enjoyed ourselves nevertheless. As previously stated, excellent location, two pubs, - the furthest away of the two is really friendly and has an amazingly loyal catchment from dog lovers staying in this inn (but main bar is dog free),- but the new shower block is out of this world. 5 star luxury. Only thing lacking was underfloor heating. Picking up on a recent review, we did more than visit the cafe, we spent a lot of time there with the weather being what it was, and the guy who seemed to be running it, (and was the chef) was extremely friendly indeed.

Visited on late May Bank Holiday 2008. Arrived on Friday lunchtime to half full site, unsurprisingly pretty full by dinner time.
Pros:
- Fancy new shower block, free showers, 20p hairdryer, kept pretty clean and plenty of cubicles, only ever queued for a half a minute.
- 'Corner shop' on site with provisions: food, gas/camping accessories, newspapers etc
- Very flat and dry.
- 10.30pm noise curfew was adhered to, mostly quiet after 9.30pm.
- Ideal location for Coledale horseshoe (walk from site), Skiddaw etc
- Two Braithwaite pubs within 5 minutes walk
Cons:
- No minimum space between tents, so a bit crammed in.
- 'No groups' rule didn't seem to be enforced, so one noisy group next to us, but to be fair did adhere to 10.30pm curfew.
- Road noise (A66) can be heard
- Handsoap in toilets would be a nice addition to save bringing some with you every time!
In summary, great if you want facilities, not so great if you prefer peaceful isolation.
Would go back.

We've just returned from a two night last minute stay at Scotgate not by choice but thats all we could find on the Friday evening.
The site is barely five minutes drive from Keswick and easily found.
Tents are separate from other units and the site itself is quite small but all level (ground did appear to be rock hard about 4 inches down). Size or lack of did become apparant on the Saturday when more arrivals took over the spaces that the children had used for playing as there was no where else for them to really go.
Facilty wise the showers etc are all brand new the shop was well stocked for the size and the staff were all friendly, did not use the cafe.
'Lockdown' as the kids called it was at 10.30 and it was very quiet after this.
Nearby pub ' The Royal Oak' was very nice.
No real complaints apart from lack of space for kids to play.

We have just returned from a weeks stay at this site. It was a late booking as we changed from a tent to a caravan. Finding the site was very simple as it is just off the A66. We found the site reasonably quiet despite being so close to the A road. Location was beautiful, views of Skiddaw and close to both Derwentwater & Bassenthwaite lakes. Local attractions include walks, pubs, Keswick was a short drive away. The site itself was flat and well mown. If you were in a caravan, pitches were clearly laid out. However if you were in a tent it appeared to be a free for all and very congested at times. Needed to carefully negotiate guy ropes when making way to toilet facilities at night. Camp was quiet by 10.30 every night. The staff were efficient and courteous. The cafe was clean and provided take away options. The toilet blocks. As said by other reviewers needed updating although they were clean. We were irritated by the fact that we had to pay for showers (this is not a cheap site to stay on). There was an open area for children to play on but no investment in facilities such as play equipment to entertain youngsters. There were appropriate washing up facilities & a laundry on site, open 6 days a week. Overall a pleasant site that was a good base for area. Main criticism is the dated shower block along with the charge for showering which we felt was an unnecessary irritation considering cost of pitch etc.

We haven't been camping for a long time, thirty years in fact, and because of some grotty B+B experiences we thought we'd give it another try. We found the site using the website but, like everything else, really have to see for yourself. We were very impressed with what we found. It was very easy to find and has a lovely 'cosy' feel to it. Tucked in next to the tiny village of Braithwaite, the surrounding views were gorgeous. We found the facilities on the site to be excellent. The toilets were spotlessly clean and although the showers were a little dated, were clean and perfectly adequate. The shop and cafe were well stocked and very handy. Just a short walk away we found a choice of two pubs, both very cosy and serving wonderful food. we were absolutely delighted with our stay there and will definitely be going back.

Just visited Scotgate for the Keswick Beer Festival, it is an OK site but wouldn't go much further. Location is excellent with great views in all directions of Skiddaw and beyond. On the plus side, the camping areas are flat and well kept, with a well stocked and reasonably priced shop and a good cafe/restaurant. However, I must have visited a different campsite to most other reviewers - the staff are probably the most unfriendly I've ever experienced on a campsite, especially the grey-haired man on reception and a lady in the cafe. Felt more of a hindrance than a welcome guest! The toilet/shower block would probably be out-dated in the '70s, never mind in 2007! They need more than "a little TLC". Have never liked the idea of having to pay extra for showers - definitely a personal bugbear. Also no handwash in the toilet block - on a campsite that's unforgivable! Would see what else Keswick had to offer before returning to Scotgate.

A very nice site that we have visited once before, hence our return! The staff are very friendly and helpful, it attracts really nice clientele,ie; no rowdys! It's flat and very well looked after, and near to both Braithwaite and Keswick for shops, pubs, eateries etc as well as having its own cafe and very well stocked reasonably priced shop on site The only niggle we would have is that the camping showers need a little TLC. As we have to pay for the use of them, the shower heads and pipework leak, and the timings are a bit out. Water pressure is good, if not a little TOO good! The amount of water coming out of the taps would shame the Fire Brigade! Half of it must have sprayed the floors and the clients, which is a pity as water is precious. If this pressure is reduced, then a lot of water could be saved, so cutting down on expense for the site owners. We would recommend the site to anyone camping and walking.

We have been to Scotgate twice, it is an ok site clean enough and good facilities (although many not available this time). The shower block was a good walk when you are desperate in the morning, as we were stuck on gravel pitches in the far corner and a 20p meter for the shower was not sufficient it took 40p for a decent one although they were hot. The water and waste drainage is in the middle of the central field (not exactly handy). Road noise quite bad as the A66 passes right through to West Cumbria. It was quiet at this time of year and a short trip into keswick with bus stop on the main road near the site. A lovely pub just up the road, plenty of walks nearby. We would use this site again for keswick if we couldnt get on the C&CC site which is more central.

I first went to this site as a child with my parents around 15 years ago, and stayed in the caravans on numerous occasions. I now visit the site as a camper with my girlfriend, I remember this site with fond memories as a child and it was great coming back. The site is excellent and I would highly recommend it. The site has excellent facilities and the staff are very friendly. The shop is good value and it also sells food in cafe. I love coming to the site to camp as it is an all round excellent experience. You can also usually get a good pitch, and the other campers are friendly too. Try it out, well worth it!

We have stayed here in a Static many years ago and so decided to stay there for our first camping trip, knowing that the facilities were good. We stayed here when the temperatures were really high 43degC on one day according to our car! So we needed a minimum 2 showers a day. Yes you do need 10p to heat the water for a shower for just 2 mins but that was sufficient, cold showers were free and suited my husband fine. The site is excellent, flat land and a reasonably priced shop and excellent staff. As a plus point the rules state that dogs should be kept on leads although not many people adhered to this but they were not allowed to roam free, which I was very pleased with. I definitely recommend this site, well laid out and an excellent base for all types of holiday, it was so good we stayed an extra night.
