We have just returned from a four night stay at Dunstan Hill. It's in a nice location, surrounded by open countryside/fields/coast and close to the villages of Craster (Jolly Fisherman excellent for food and views) and Embleton, and a short drive to Seahouses which has great beaches and boat trips to the Farne Islands.
The staff are not overly friendly (more on the formal side), and there was a heated booking debate going on when we checked in (I'm sure it was just one of those moments). We also had to wait a good ten minutes before the chap who was to show us to our pitch could be located. When he turned up, we followed him to the pitch and he showed us the exact area we must occupy and not go over, before filling us in on other site rules and regulations - all rather formal again and not the warmest of welcomes but like I said, I'm sure they were just having one of those days.
(NOTE - pitches seem slightly random; we were confined to a single tent space with minimal room to park our car, while bigger tents and caravans seemed to be able to take up as much room as they wished with gazebos, awnings, trailers and vehicles).
The toilet/shower facilities on the site are very dated and quite minimal considering the amount of caravans, tourers and tents that are there.
There are two blocks; one for the top half of the field and one for the bottom half (where we were situated). There were three showers for the ladies (although one was out of order the duration of our stay), and only two private (lockable) wash cubicles with mirrors. There are three additional communal sinks beyond the toilets with a hair drying facility.
The buildings themselves are plaster pink exposed brick with beamed, wood cladded roofing - unfortunately this is home to a vast amount of webs and insects. Saying that, the toilets were fairly clean, and there was always plenty of hot water in the showers when we used them ~ it just pays not to look up when you're showering if you don't like spiders.
Other negative point that I feel I must mention is about the freezer packs - I asked at the office if they had facilities for freezing the spare packs we had brought but they don't - unlike many campsites they will not freeze the ones you bring, you have to hire theirs which I was a bit annoyed about.
On day of departure there was nobody in the office, so we ended up going home with unwanted freezer packs (and forfeited our deposit). This may not be a huge issue for some people, but you do feel they are taking advantage a bit when it would be easy enough to provide a small communal freezer and perhaps charge a small fee to let you freeze your own.
In all, it's a pleasant site; staff are polite but formal, there are masses of kids in the holidays not to mention dogs so it can be a bit chaotic during the day (despite this, noise levels died down round about 9:30 - 10:00pm each evening).
We personally probably wouldn't go back to this site as we paid full C&CC price (being non members) and know that there are sites with better facilities for about a tenner less per night elsewhere.
However we had a nice last minute getaway, making use of the site as a base to see the beautiful Northumbrian countryside and coast from.

Looking out of my window at the pouring rain I can't believe the wall to wall sunshine we had whilst staying at CCC site at Dunstan Hill. OK so its easy to enjoy yourself with such beautiful weather and it could detract from making a useful and interesting review but as my review name suggests I do try to 'tell it as it is'.
Wardens Friendly enough, we didn't need anything from them but others did and they seemed satisfied. Also the wardens did keep the site clean and tidy.
Site could be a little crowded when the schools are closed for the summer. We had plenty of room but site only two thirds full during our mid week stay.
Toilets plenty and clean, although there are signs warning about the very hot water at the sinks I wouldn't want a child to go on their own as I nearly scalded myself! Surely they could control the temperature.
Showers only three available (men and womens sides) but there are two blocks. Imagine there would be queueing at peak times. Although the showers were clean hot and free they could do with a bit of updating, pressure not wonderful.
Gorgeous walk about 15 mins gentle stroll to Embleton Bay. Lovely beach, take a picnic and windbreak and stay all day. Or carry on your walk along the historic golf course only a mile or so into Embleton village, with pubs shop and post office, then back across fields to site.
Also absolute musts are Alnwick Gardens, lots for children to do, you could spend at least half a day there. Also go to Craster walk through this beautiful village and head towards Dunstanburugh Castle along the coast, stunning. Then on your return buy some Craster kippers for the BBQ.
Already considering when we can return to this site.

I would love to give this site a poor review as I don't want everyone else going, but that just isn't possible.
It is a beautiful small site with very good facilities and an amazing location.
There are 2 toilet blocks - at the top & bottom of the site - which offer toilet, shower, laundry & washing up facilities. These were very clean & more than enough for everyone.
There is a 15 minute walk to one of the cleanest beaches around (but don't be like us and take the wrong route and end up with a 2 hour walk)
Embleton is a 15 min walk as well and there a variety of pubs. We went to The Greys Inn & the food was fantastic & good value for money.
The site as well is very well run & it now offers wi-fi.
Overall we had a fantastic stay & have booked to return at the end of the month.

This is the second time we've stayed on this campsite and it is one of our favourites. We have 3 dogs so the lovely sceninc footpath adjacent to the site is a real bonus, it's a lovely walk down to a dog friendly beach. I have read the various comments regarding how how crowded the site can be, also about the shower block and the staff - we were at the site at a busy time and I didn't think it was overcrowded, also the staff have always been really friendly to us and placed us on the site away from where all the families with young children were, which was appreciated.
I found the shower block to be perfectly clean, I never had a problem finding a free shower to use - the showers have fairly low water pressure, but good adjustable temperature, and they are not push button type, which is good.
We had fish and chips from the van, there was some comment about it not being very good and having small portions - ours was really good, the fish was freshly cooked and generous portions of chips.
The location is lovely, nearby Alnwick has the best bookshop ever, Barter Books, it also has an excellent cafe. There is poor mobile phone coverage, but I don't see this as a negative - it's nice to get away from all that as far as I'm concerned.
If we go to Northumberland again we would definitely stay on this site again, we love it, and it's one of the best we've found if you have dogs.

Lovely site, up to CCC's impeccable cleanliness standards. Showers weren't great, too hot and not vey powerful but we should have guessed this by the fact that it is cheaper than other club sites.
There is a small children's playground. Nice views from pitch. Drive to Craster and had lovely walk to Dunstanburgh Castle - probably could have walked from site but we didn't have time as we were there to visit family.
Very good location near sea but still only half an hour or so to the Cheviots, and we would return.

We chose this site for our maiden caravan trip and were glad we did. The site was peaceful, clean and friendly. The toilet and shower blocks were clean. The kids playground was adequate and safe. The site was well maintained and within a 30 to 40 minute countryside stroll of Dunstanburgh golf course, castle and beach and a short walk to Embleton which has three good little pubs and a great play park for the kids. The site got a little crowded, but this wasn't a problem and was a reflection on its popularity. We will definitely return.

Just returned from 3 days of a 4 day booking. The campsite is just as described in the reviews, really well kept but the most cramped site I have ever stayed on and that was in September. Goodness knows what it must be like in school holidays. It really needs double the area for the people who are using it.
We had to leave as there were huge winds and our tent can do up to 40mph but no more than that. As there is no mobile reception we struggled to find out when the wind would abate, there was no weather provided by the site or warnings given by the site staff. However one lovely member of staff used their internet and gave us the outlook.
I won't be returning but am quite sad about it as the spot is lovely and it could be a super site. Went to have a look at the other camping and caravan club site further up the coast and it was little more than a lay-by on a busy road so will have to keep searching for the perfect Northumberland site.

We stayed here at the height of the holiday season, I agree with other reviews about the 'friendly staff ', We had just came from the Charmouth club site so this site was very poor compared to that.
We arrived at 12 after an 8 hour drive to find a note pinned to the door, toilet cleaning they would be back by 12.30!
The site is really a very large field with 5 rows of pitches, many people had huge tunnel tents and caravans with awnings plus a pup tent so the pitches were used to the maximum, every bit of space seemed to be used if they could fit a backpacker tent on to a grass verge they would.
There are 2 toilet blocks but only 3 showers for each sex in each, 1 washing machine/ dryer and 1 parent and baby room. While the facilities were clean due to the number of them there were long waits to use the facilities. One very small children's play area so no room to play my children played on the path just outside the campsite making dens.
We were near the toilets at the bottom, and I assume they used a soak away which got a bit smelly but cleared after it rained
Fish and chip van visits the site once/ twice a week and a newspaper van delivers mon- sat. On site shop sells bread, milk, bacon and fresh orange juice
Despite the campsites failings my boys really liked this site they made loads of friends, and enjoyed the location overall
The surrounding area is superb though which makes up for the campsite, its about a mile walk to the beach which is along farmers fields / footpaths etc, and you can walk across the fields to the village ( 2 pubs, small shop/ post office and garage) Lots of castles in the area if you are a member of NT OR English/ Scottish Cadw heritage lots to see and do.
Alnwick which is about 20 mins away has the nearest large supermarkets ( morrissons, Sainsbury's and Lidl) I did see a Asda van deliver to the site one day.
The whole area is very quiet even in Peak season, we went to Alnwick gardens - fab, Edinburgh for the day ( pre book tickets if you booked on the day tickets were £33 per adult, I pre booked and for 4 of us it cost £20), Bamburgh is lovely, seahouses for fish and chips and boat trips, walked the walls in Berwick, Cragside NT was the best NT site I've been to, Liked Holy Island

I did a little tour last year and stayed two nights at this Camping and Caravan Club site.
The location was lovely, the site well kept and the staff friendly. The toilet blocks was immaculate and plentiful but the biggest plus for us was the walking.
There's a pathway from this site down through woodland and onto the nearby beach and we spent a fair bit of our day down there, it was gorgeous and very relaxing.
Just a few minutes walk from the site was a nice pub doing lovely meals. This was just our sort of place, scenic and relaxing but plenty of interest on the doorstep.

We stayed for 7 nights (mid August)- 2 adults in a tent. We are members of the C&C Club- our first visit to one of their sites since getting a tent, having used them previously when we had a campervan.
A friendly welcome and shown to our pitch, in first field, by warden on bike. Said they’d put us there, because we were a couple, and there were fewer children in that area. There is a children’s play area in the second field.
The site is on a gentle slope, pitches in the first field seemed level. The road runs round site through both fields in a figure of eight. There are hard standings adjacent to the roadway. The first field seemed to get the sun in the afternoon/evening, but much of the second field appeared to be in the shade by then. EHU to some pitches but not all. Some EHU points were a long way from pitches. We were lent an extension (and our lead is 25m) to reach. Water, waste water point, bins in several locations.
The showers/toilets are very clean- each block is closed for cleaning at a set time each day. The showers and toilets are in separate rooms, so you have to go outside to get from one to the other. There are two blocks (one in each field) with three showers, toilets & sinks, two sinks in cubicles in each block. There was also a hairdryer (20p) but nowhere to plug your own in. The laundry, disabled washroom and family washroom are in these blocks with the CDP at the side. Also the washing up room is in the block – very small with three sinks, but difficult to get three people in. There was always a queue to wash up.
The field was quite soft underfoot on the grass and the area to the side of our tent never dried out all week, despite there being no rain until the day before we left. Half a day of rain flooded the roadway (several inches of water to paddle through to get to the toilets) and the area outside the gents toilets in first field was even worse. The wardens were out next day with chipping to fill in the holes on roadway.
A fish and chip vans calls at the site on Wednesdays and Fridays. They weren’t that good and the portions were very small. Reception has a small shop selling essentials, but only open limited times. There is also an information room with maps and leaflets. The village is about a mile along the lane.
We walked to Dunstanburgh castle (about an hour) via the beach (thirty minutes) from the site. The footpath runs alongside the site and is the dog walk. I would also recommend visits to Border Bookshop in the old Alnwick railway station, Alnwick castle garden, Cragside house and Lindisfarne castle.
Would we return to the site? Yes, if we wanted to stay in the area.
