Just returned from a two week holiday on this site. Our first visit to Northumberland and it won't be our last. The site although quite full is very well kept, grass is cut and bins emptied regularly. The toilets and other facilities although showing there age are spotless. Even through the worst of weather the staff kept showers and toilets maintained to a high standard.
Lovely walks to the nearby beach and a little further to the castle ruins. Embleton has a petrol station with a small shop attached and several pubs. We used The Greys who allowed entry to us and our three greyhounds without any problem. There are so many gems in this area, Craster is lovely and top quality fish can be bought direct from the smokery in the village. Newton by the sea well worth a visit, the Ship pub overlooks the beach.
With so many unspoilt beaches and Castles to visit we will be back.
If I had to make one criticism it is that the wardens need to cheer up a little they can be a little dour but were helpful when required.

We really liked this site. Staff are great; pretty relaxed about things as long as you pitch in line but that does give the site a more spacious feel with channels of green where kids can play. Facilties were always clean and as long as you don't mind a short wait for showers at peak times (high season) then not a problem.
The site is a pleasant mile's walk from the best beach around (take bodyboards and wetsuits) and 2 miles from Dunstanburgh Castle (lovely ruins but overpriced unless you are a NT or EH member). Craster is worth a visit and there are good coastal walks from the site so you can leave the car behind.
Reception sells bread and milk; no good shops nearby so we had to keep tracking down supermarkets which could be difficult for large groups as we were(6).
Otherwise it is a fab area to visit; a week is about right as it is quite remote and can get challenging in bad weather. Lindisfarne, Farne Islands and Beadnell Bay are all a must to visit.

A very mixed review. The location of this site is outstanding, you can walk to the beach (which is beautiful) or Dunstanburgh castle from here.
The facilities are clean and thanks in part to the consideration of other campers a pleasure to use.
However. The whole design of the camp site makes you feel packed in and it does resemble a refugee camp.
There is no room for children to play and only a token play area is provided.
Depending on which member of staff you speak to determines whether you are met with friendliness / helpfulness or indifference.
I would probably go back there as it is in a beautiful location and the site is clean and well maintained, but it is by no means my favourite campsite.

We booked in advance and had to politely refuse CCC membership. Pricey as all CCC sites are. Checking in was efficient if a little officious for our tastes (had to politely refuse CCC membership again).
We were shown to pitch options by a chap on a bike and we felt a little pressured to decide instantly. We were highly amused by the pitching instructions 'tent must be centred on the white pole & against the fence.'.
The site is well run and spotlessly clean, the staff are friendly and conscientious. Shop is basic but local villages have plenty of shops; fish & chip van visits site 2 evenings in High season, newspaper deliveries each morning.
Toilet blocks are immaculate and stacks of hot water. Washing up & laundry facilities. Single parent/child room is well thought out & subsequently very popular. Lots of rubbish bins but no recycling options.
Only slight niggle was I got locked into the ladies at cleaning time which I didn't find funny as despite being there well before the advertised time there was no friendly 'warning' the door was about to be locked.
THINGS TO DO: Obviously the beaches in Northumberland need no introduction! The site information room is packed with info although no takeaway menus for Alnwick (Indian is excellent).
20 minute walk direct to Embleton beach, footpath to Embleton village and also to Dunstanborough castle, all off road. Embleton has several pubs. Craster & Castle lovely on a summer evening. 20 minute drive to Alnwick. Don't miss a trip to Barter Books - great for a wet day or any day if you are a book lover. Castle & Gardens well worth a visit, Garden particularly. £10.50/adult for garden but worth it, take a picnic.
If you have children also take full waterproofs and spare clothes to gardens as water features are brilliant although The Poison Garden presentation is a real disappointment to a plantsman. Farne Islands trip well worth money, landing is pricey if not NT member but does pay for puffin wardens, Inner Farne trip includes a boat tour round the islands to see the seals which isn't made clear on the info.
A nice site, well organised and well run & immaculate. We will return if we head back to the area again. Popular with families, quite a few dogs but no issues. Staff need to chill a little but should get credit for a great site. I last visited 28 years ago so it was a real trip down memory lane walking my own family to the beach!

Although I would recommend this site for its location and typical CCC quietness and cleanliness, I was not impressed with the less-than-friendly welcome we received on this visit.
We arrived at 5.00pm on a Saturday. I had not booked a pitch as I'd rung up previously and a very friendly woman told me they never turn backpackers away, so I was expecting a courteous welcome. There were five members of staff in reception but it took over a minute before we (both with heavy backpacks) were even acknowledged.
The staff were more interested in carrying on their conversation than booking us in, and they did not know the price for member backpackers was lower than for non-members.
As other reviewers have said, although the person who showed us to our pitch was very friendly, he was very strict about where we should place our (tiny) tent - in the dead centre of the pitch, which was not in good condition as the ground was bare and compacted. The toilet block, although clean, is in need of updating. The hot water is scalding hot.
The area is fantastic, and overall we had a pleasant stay, but the welcome at reception could be improved and investment in facilities would not go amiss.

We absolutely love this site. We have stayed here a number of times now both in a tent and caravan and can't fault it.
We recently bought our vintage 70's caravan Doris and took her on her maiden voyage here because as absolute caravan novices we new the staff would bend over backwards to help us if we needed it. And we certainly did!
It is the location of this site which makes it such a winner. A really lovely walk though the woods to Dunstan Steads and the beach. Embleton just across the fields. I would recommend a glass of vino sat outside the Sportsman Inn as the views are beautiful. And walking distance to the fabulous Ship Inn at Low Newton.
We don't live too far away and love being able to get away at short notice. The facilities are lovely and clean and this is a great dog friendly site. In fact just an all round friendly site. I would highly recommend.

Spent six nights on this site during the second week of June. Lovely weather. We’re CCC (Caravanning and Camping Club) members but not stayed on this Club site before.
Registering on arrival was a very formal affair. We weren't asked anything other than to confirm our booking and personal details and we weren't provided with any information about the site or the area.
We were shown to our pitches by one of the staff on his bike. Again, it was very formal. We have stayed on other CCC sites before but this was more regimental in terms of where to pitch and the boundaries e.G. Rear and middle of units must be smack bang in the middle of the marker post and should be facing in such and such direction.
Following the formal arrival, the remainder of our stay was fine. Other staff we met were informative and helpful.
The site is looked after. The facilities (built in 1986) on site are well-maintained and the toilets, basins, showers, pot washing and laundry areas are kept spotless. Lack of heating wasn’t an issue for us as the weather was so good.
The site appeared to be popular with dog owners. Not an issue if the level of behaviour we encountered is anything to go by. I’ve never known so many quiet and well-behaved dogs in a busy place. I guess they were all tired out by a fully day's walking.
The site shop stocks the minimum of goods. A newspaper van visits the site every morning. There is also a fish and chip van on-site on a Wednesday and Friday evening.
Bear in mind that as with other CCC Club Sites, if you have no fridge and are camping using a coolbox, the CCC Club Site policy does not permit you to freeze your own freeze packs. You have to pay a £2 deposit and then rent their(small) freeze packs at 50p each. Each time you freeze one pack it will cost you 50p.
Adjacent to the site shop is an information room which has absolutely loads of leaflets, maps, guides, advice sheets and details of places to visit. There is also a folder with details of restaurants, places to eat and takeaway delivery services in the area. In addition, there is also a pay phone.
Mobile reception isn’t good. They do have a raised mound of grass in the car park comically called ‘Mobile Hill’.
Embleton, a mile away, has a decent shop within the petrol station and a handful of pubs. Alnwick, 8 miles away, is the nearest town with supermarkets i.E Morrison’s, Lidl and Sainsbury’s.
The site’s location is good for exploring the area. There are three public footpaths which intersect the site at the rear of the lower facilities. One leads down to an excellent beach and walks to Dunstanburgh Castle and onward to Low Newton or Craster. Another leads to Embleton thereby avoiding the mile or so walk along the main road. The third takes you along fields towards Dunstan Hill.
Travelling further isn’t difficult. Alnwick (you’ll need a bank loan for the castle and gardens), Seahouses (Farne Islands trip a must), Bamburgh Castle (stunning) and Holy Island (check the tide times) are all easy to reach by car. If you don’t want to drive then there’s a bus stop literally opposite the entrance to the site which is the Berwick-upon-Tweed/Newcastle service. The timetable for which is in the information room on the site.
All in all, would consider returning as the location is good for what we want and the site well maintained.

When we arrived it was in the middle of horrendous winds. We were shown to our pitch and advised not to pitch and to sleep in the car. We tried to put the footprint down and it was ripped up by the wind. We decided to go home and come back the next day. When we told them we were going they found us another pitch and also helped us to put the tent up which was brilliant, really good service. The wind dropped for the rest of the week but it is slightly windy most of the time.
The site is lovely with views over to Dunstanburgh and a 1 mile walk to the beach, great dog walk.
Shower block isn't particularly modern but it is clean and the fresh flowers in the toilets just shows how well it is kept.
Fish and chip van good but we have had better from local chippies.
Overall lovely site we would vist again.

Just returned from a fantastic 2 weeks at this well cared for site.
I found the wardens very helpful and they kept the site clean and tidy. The toilet blocks were well kept and clean at all times.
As for pitch size there is plenty of room as for other comments if rows are removed it will make it very hard to get a pitch due to the popularity of the site.
It was full every day during our stay but it was always peaceful.
The surrounding area is very nice with good walks from the site the only negative is the dog mess on the woodland paths near the site this is no reflection on the site as they have provided waste bins.
The local pubs are very good with some fantastic local brews well worth a try. As for the Kippers at Craster out of this world also sells very Good Scallops.
Seahouses boat trips are well worth taking.
The National Trust at Craggside is also worth a visit.
As for local shops the butchers at Seahouses is very good and a really nice owner. The butchers in Bamburgh is also very good can recommend the Bamburgh Bangers (home made sausages)
Will return to this site

Dunstan Hill is in a great location, the photo in Caravan & Camping Club book looks very spacious when in fact it is overcrowded, caravans in the field where we were pitched just looked at the back of other vans which were very close. It would be good if they took out 4 rows, then everyone would get the real camping feeling !
The wardens are very friendly and do a good job keeping the site and facilities clean and tidy. The shower blocks are dark and dreary, ready for refurbishment.
There are good walks from site and quaint villages and pubs close by, we will return to area but not to this site.
