This site is the only one we have visited that we can say is practialy perfect! The staff are friendly, the shop is well stocked and reasonably priced.
The showers and toilets are clean and the waters always hot. The pot wash is covered so no being soaked through when you are trying to wash up in the rain. The laundry area even has books so you can amuse yourself while waiting.
The bottom field is flat and next to a small river that the kids can play in in summer, it can get very fast flowing in wet weather. Only problem with this field is its not open often enough. The overspill field is ideal for those who want a bit of r&r as it is no kids allowed.
The surroundings are amazing and you can walk for hours and not see another person in some places. Pubs, shops and takeaways are all within walking distance. The only bad thing I can think of about this site is the top field that is very sloping and can get very crowded. Overall 10 out of 10.

Set in 'Last of the Summer Wine' country on land once occupied by a water mill, this campsite is both quiet and peaceful. There is a small but well stocked shop on site which also doubles up as the reception. There is level hard standing for caravans and motorhomes but the main camping field is on quite a slope.
Finding a sufficiently level pitch was tricky as the site was full to capacity when we arrived! There is a large rally field besides the river which is much flatter but this was being used for caravans at the time of our visit.
The shower block is a bit dated now but it was still clean despite how busy the site was. The solar powered water was piping hot too.
There are woods all around the site and it is easily possible to spend a couple of hours walking in the woods or down by the river.
The site is popular with pleasure anglers as coarse fishing is available in the old mill dam and trout fishing in the river Holme. The river here is a great place for children to catch their first ever fish!
The site would make a nice base for exploring further afield. Holmfirth is just a couple of miles away with plenty to see and do and the comparative metropolis of Huddersfield is a few minutes drive or bus ride away.
We first visited this site 7 years ago and we still enjoy coming back to it every time.

This was a nice site for August Bank Hol. The site was well laid-out, near to Holmfirth and sheltered in a nice, secluded valley. The site shop was well equipped and the wardens very helpful.
All local facilities, restaurants etc are within easy reach.
As is usual with British sites the toilet and shower facilities whilst spotlessly clean, were in need of renovation. The token system for showers seemed a bit arcane for 2010.
There are numerous ducks that are completely human friendly- they will get in your tent and have nosey round if you leave the door open and unattended. Good fun though.
The stocks of camping gas were depleted- perhaps because its was the end of the busy season.
I would recommend this site and use it again.

Just come back from this site after a couple of nights here, the setting is great. We pitched our tent in the bottom field next to the stream which was great for the children to paddle in, the only down side of this is at night you can hear the flow of the water and didn't half make me want the toilet but earplugs soon stopped that.
The toilet and shower block was very clean, maybe a few more showers needed but didn't have a real problem with it, entry by a number pad and if you have stubby fingers like me you may need a couple of go's to get the door open!
The shop was well stocked and very reasonable and staff very peasant and friendly, so to were all other people on site.
There were lots of ducks, bats and birds to watch, which kept the children busy along with the big field for them to play on so there was no need to use the tiny slide.
Will definitely go again.

Just spent a weekend at the site, there were three families all together and all on the lower field, the field was perfect in every way, flat, easy to peg, tree's all around the perimeter and a nice stream running down the side, perfect.
All comments from previous reviews are fair, toilets are ok, a few dirty vans etc etc and the top field is on a slop, but we will stay here again next year, as it's only 1 hour away and makes a perfect base to tour the area. We went into homeferth which we walked at about 2 mile and got the bus back, a nice day out for all 12 of us.

We went here last weekend for a couple of nights and enjoyed it so much that we went this weekend for 3 nights as well. Having read the reviews after we had booked, we were a bit worried about the negative comments. However, we found that most of them seemed a bit harsh and had a really lovely, relaxing time ourselves.
The ladies (we were served by 3 different females, 1 of them the site owner) were really friendly and helpful. Upon arrival we were asked if we would like a place on the quiet field. We said yes, our kids are grown up and some R&R is what we had gone for, so welcomed this idea.
We pitched next to the riverbank, on a little field on the edge of the woods that has 5 tents only. It was magical. On our first morning we saw a kingfisher, some dippers, wagtails, robins and a cheeky squirrel that dropped it's husks on our heads. We also saw a red kite and at dusk, the place comes alive with bats. If you're into nature, this spot was perfect.
Yes, the facilities are a bit basic and the toilets and showers definitely need an overhaul, but the positives of the surroundings made up for these shortfalls. It was our first camping experience as a couple without our kids, and it was perfect.

Mixed feelings and comments about this site really.
Just returned from a 3 night stay there. The entrance is not very clear from the road and you are almost upon it when you see the small sign (which could do with a wash or be made bigger). The entrance is split in two, one in and one out so I had to reverse back up the A6024 road and then swing the car and caravan around. The track down to the site is steep and full of pot holes.
We had to park up at the side of the pond and my wife walked around to the shop where she checked in. We then settled down on a hard standing pitch at the side of the pond and were soon greeted by an army of ducks!
The people who run the site work very hard are very polite but the whole place needs a facelift. The shower/toilet block is accessed by a keypad (ask for details at reception) and showers cost 30p and run for five minutes. The shop is well stocked and very reasonably priced.
There is a small community of vans under the trees and they are all looking a little worse for wear and could do with cleaning.
Plenty of walks locally and a stream that trickled along until the downpour came and it became very fast moving.
Holmfirth is okay with some small gift shops as well as the café and Norah Batty’s house from Last of the summer wine. We also drove to Marsden to have a look at the longest canal tunnel in the UK.
Now the tricky bit…………on the day we left we were parked pondside adjacent to the shop. I hooked up the caravan and started to drive off.
On turning right, in front of the shop there is a tree which overhangs the track and I almost sliced off the top of the caravan! I backed it up and tried again but in the end had to unhitch and use the mover to negotiate the tight bend and to be honest looking at where I started to turn the caravan I would doubt that it could be done without unhitching.
The road back to the M62 is a challenge too and very steep with many sets of traffic lights on steep hills. I think I took about 5000 miles off my clutch!
Would I go again? Maybe but would need to have my wits about me and have my caravan opposite the shop on the other hard standing area away from ‘that tree’.

Just had a lovely weekend at this site.I was very concerned by some of the reviews as we had booked the site before reading them but it was a delight - helped by good weather and good company.
Our pitch was in a square hard standing area that sites about 10 caravans but it backed on to the river which was safe for paddling / fishing nets which meant our kids were happy for the entire weekend. We were able to place our table and chairs by the waters edge which was great.
There are loads of ducks around the site and I thought the shop was inexpensive and well stocked. The people there did their best to accommodate us (in caravan) and our friends who were in a non-electric tent and although they have separate pitching areas we ended up being only 20 meters apart.
We used our own facilities but there were ques for the showers and washing-up areas due to the site being full and only 2 showers in each of the mens and ladies. The play area is poor to be honest but there is a ball games area and with the river there was no need to use it.
The site has an informal and relaxed feel but is well looked after and I would definitely recommend this site to friends - it is much better than some of the reviews suggest however I also appreciate that in winter / wet weather it would no doubt get a bit muddy.

4th visit to this site. There is something about this site that we love. The kids are like magnets to each other as there are no amusement arcades or play areas to entertain them.
They are always playing games of footie, rounders, baminton and tug of war. The stream by the side, is shallow enough for them to play safely. (with supervision). The bottom field, which isn't always open, is flat and big.
The shop is always well stocked with most things that you need, including bottles of wine, but you must dig down into the baskets and boxes on floor to get a good one. Shop stayed open while gone 9 although sign on the door says 8.
The staff are very pleasant. Didn't use the showers this time so cannot comment. Some nice dog walks around the area. Will be going again.

This was our second visit and once again had a lovely weekend. We camped in the top field, which is quite sloped in places and difficult to get car off when grass is wet. The owners and all reception staff on both occasions were very helpful and polite. The shop is well stocked with long opening hours. The toilet block which included 2 showers were adequate and kept exceptionally clean. The water is solar heated so either shower very early or mid/late afternoon to get hot water. The site was very clean with regular emptying of dustbins. There are some very steep and narrow steps from the top field to the toiles/shop, so anyone with mobility problems needs to pitch on the bottom field, which is next to the river. We really enjoyed both stays and will go back in the future.
