An easy-to-find site directly off the Woodhead Pass. It's down a hill in a valley with a woodland site at the bottom around a mill pond, a large flat field going down to the river (the one that's only got permission to be used for 28 days a year), and a grass field at the top of the hill (apparently, more steep than it looks when you pitch your tent).
If you want EHU then you'll need the pitches in woodland. I think they have a limited amount of available pitches as there are quite a lot of seasonal / long term pitches (not the eyesore that other reviewers claim, in our opinion. Yes, some have set up little gardens, but no-one was unwelcoming). The disadvantage of this part of the site is that the pitches are quite close together but it doesn't seem to be the type of site that has riotous parties or is noisy. Most of the pitches on this part of the site are hard-standing.
The toilet blocks were spotless. The new set have family bathrooms (which we didn't use) and the usual shower block below has spacious showers (the type where you can get showered without getting your towel or clothes wet). The older set, although decorated in the 80s, weren't dirty, just a little outmoded, fashion-wise. I must point out my utter joy, however, that both shower blocks were blissfully warm. The older block has a child step by the sinks and the family bathrooms have child steps.
The staff were very friendly, giving us a choice of pitches, and the shop is well-stocked with a wide range of essentials and a good range of beers. I thought the prices very reasonable given the location. The shop also has a very good range of local information, including transport. The owner gave us a good tip about a tearoom (Emma's tea parlour) in Holmfirth which we visited and really enjoyed. We got the bus in to Holmfirth (don't get it from the Woodhead Pass, ask in the shop for details of the local bus which you get from over the river).
The site has two children's play areas (one by the shop and original toilet block and one by the new toilet block). Both were in very good repair, and one looked to be brand new. Our daughter enjoyed playing in both. What she loved most though was the ducks and ducklings which wandered around the park and were happy to let nosey toddlers get very close.
It's not the sort of site where you can leave your children to wander about if you're pitched in the woodland bit at the botom. At this time of year, the road, which snakes through the lower part of the park (where the EHU is) isn't busy, but there simply isn't that much room for them to run around without being on other pitches. Others have complained that this is a cramped site. I take their point, the pitches aren't 6' apart, but we found everyone friendly and / or considerate, so it wasn't a big deal for us. When the bottom field isn't in use, children can run off energy here though.
There were quite a few midges on site at night so you might want to bring some repellent as I imagine they could get worse as the weather warms up.
We chose this site because we wanted to try out our new drive-away awning. I'd come back, but I'd go for a no-EHU pitch down by the river. Having said that, the price for the pitch with EHU and awning was £19 per night which we felt was good value. We enjoyed an afternoon in Holmfirth on Saturday and spent a canny few hours pottering around. By the way, Domino's pizza delivers to the site if you're as disorganised as us! Overall, we felt that two generations of this family were working together to update and improve facilities.

We stayed here not really knowing what to expect as I found the reviews to be somewhat mixed. The site is only about 35 mins from us so we came just for the weekend after school/work on the Friday. When we arrived my first impression was how busy it was, there seemed to be a great deal of caravans, vehicles around, I think we had all arrived at once! It was one of those places that my first impressions were not too good, but by the time we had set up and had a look round I was in love with the place.
As for the comments regarding some of the older caravans on the permanant pitches, it really wouldn't have been something I would have ever picked up on. The pitches are all fairly close but I've seen a lot worse. The lake/pond looks beautiful in the evening with the lights of the tents and caravans around it and there is also a lovely little stream that runs at the back of the park. There is a newly built park and newly built washrooms which had the best showers I've ever seen. They were always immaculate and quiet throughout my weekend stay. The shop was very well stocked and the staff were all lovely and very informative. On the Saturday archery lessons were on offer so we signed my son up and he loved it, the guy who runs this was fantastic with the kids and the adults! There are a couple of pubs within walking distance as is Holmfirth itself. All in all a lovely little place that I would readily return to.

Needing a local site at the last minute for a spur of the minute decision for myself, daughter and two grandchildren on mothers day weekend, to have a one nights first trip of the season. We had almost given in on the firday night after trying every site within distance on this map, most were closed the ones that weren't were full, or didn't reply. Although only 14 miles away it isn't an area I know so last shot gave it a go.
Am I glad we did.
One top tip DO NOT trust your SATNAV with postcode search, ( took us down the worst dirt track ever to a dead end, had to bump car onto a nearby housing estate, no idea how my car survived, so glad we were only in a car and not towing as once you get onto the track I have no idea how you would ever reverse, that is the only negative thing I can say about the trip and hardly the owners fault.
After contacting the site we got great directions and thankfully arrived in one piece, pulled into the parking area and went to find the staff. Were shown to choice of two pitches, one near caravans and tents (we prefered or one by the river bed, but were told we would have to park on the bavnking and carry our gear down a few steps then park car away from pitch. Granddaughter really wanted to pitch by the river so wearilly we agreed after a ten year old pouted). So glad we did, beautiful private pitch, have the same spot booked for next weekend.
Kids both aged 10 went to explore while we pitched, something we don't usuallly allow but felt so safe we let them, by the time we pitched and had cuppas going kids returned with a friend. The site has an amazing new play area where children can gather. The shop (so sorry to the poor lady who was in there that weekend as the kids must have driven her nuts in and out for sweets), but they loved her, said she was really lovely with them, the shop itself is cheaper than my local shop and sold everything you could need, from fresh bread and eggs, to beer and tobbacco, plus the bits of kit you always forget. Lots of local information and leaflets.
Toilets and showers, best I've ever seen, brand new and free including hairdryers.
As we were only there one night didn't use laundrette, but looked well equipped and clean.
Washing up area, elsan points all spotless
Staff were always around, more than enough but not obtrusive, yet available and smilling and willing to offer advice or to chat. Especially for the kids who constantly forgot the code to loo blocks whilst out playing.
Area beautiful on the site itself, again can't wait for next weekend to explore the local area more, we didn't venture off site as it was only a one night last min crazy decision to have our first trip of the season.
Some people have mentioned the permenant caravans, yes they are there, complete with pets and garden ornaments etc, but they all seamed friendly, the friend our children met was staying with one of the premanent residents, and for me they looked great, kids loved them, something different.
Ducks and wildlife also made the kids stay, squirrels, ducks roaming they spotted lots, and it was early spring.
We didn't have any issue with electic, had to use the sites extension as our cable wouldn't reach, but that was sorted when we chose the pitch.
Will definitely be a site we use throughout the year for weekend trips everytime we have a free weekend, looking forward to many many more

We stayed here for 2 nights in half term - it was a long overdue return visit as we have stayed here before but hadn't been back for ten years.
We were delighted to find that the campsite retains it's original charm: the lovely pond, the ducks, the excellent facilities and friendly staff. The setting is spectacular in Autumn with all the trees changing colour. We were pitched near the duck pond and loved watching the ducks' antics. We also had a lovely walk along the river bank trail, just outside of the campsite.
The toilet block next to the camp shop/reception needs some updating but is spotlessly clean. We didn't see the new block on the inside but the outside looked fantastic and there is a lovely picnic/table area which will be great for tent campers in the summer. The shop itself is well stocked and has lots of useful information on the area including leaflets on a woodland trail which our son would have enjoyed had we had time.
There was a quiet and friendly atmosphere throughout - I had read some reviews mentioning 'permanent' caravans detracting from site but please don't let this put you off, they didn't detract. The playground is small and old and is due for refurbishment next year but with woods a mere 50 yds away we didn't need a playground.
Holmfirth itself is a great place to visit with interesting independent shops, lots of pubs, cafes and eateries. We will come back again as soon as we can.

Just returned home after a short (fri-Sun) weekend break at this campsite. We used the site as a base so we could attend the food & drink festival held in the village. On arrival we were shown a couple of pitches with ehu, but none offered were big enough to accommodate our tent (tigris 800). At the time of booking (5 weeks ago)I did request a pitch next to the duck pond and was told they had no other bookings for the same wkend requesting ehu so I was disappointed to see lots of caravans on the said pitches I had booked, leaving only small pitches.
After turning down 4 suggested pitches due to the size, the lady did offer us a pitch in a large flat field but asked that we keep to the outskirts of the field as the field is only used for 28 days of the yr which had already been used up. We did as requested but then found our electric cable wasn't long enough so we had to ask for an extension which the lady was more than happy to lend us. The lady who checked us in was very polite and friendly. The pitch was great, right next to the stream with a field to ourselves and a added bonus of a picnic bench & no scruffy vans to look at. So think we ended up getting a better pitch after all. The field was also level and dry.
It was a lovely site with ducks roaming around which can be rather noisy during the early hrs so take ear plugs. The little pond is also very picturesque but do feel I should mention the statics that are sited here are somewhat of an eyesore. They are in need of a good clean, revamp or ship out! this is something the owners should insist on as it really does have a negative impact on the site. This is such a shame as the site could be beautiful with a few changes here and there. The children's play area was a definite no go for my children- disaster waiting to happen. Very run down and needs pulling down and replacing with a new climbing frame etc.
The shop appeared to have everything you would need if forgotten anything but didn't actually purchase anything- just went in for a nosy.
The toilet and shower facilities are immaculate and the new block is fantastic.
We did sample the bacon butties one morning but was very disappointed in them. The owner had just purchased the van and told us he had run out of most things, but the quality of the cooking was poor and the egg on my butty was a mush of egg white that looked like it had been cooked in a dirty pan and the bacon was undercooked- it didn't even look appetizing when the hubby brought it back- however the dog enjoyed it! So given that the owner had only just purchased the business I will buy again on our next visit in the hope they have pulled their socks up.
We did have an issue with the electric during our 1st night, seemed one of the touring caravans was using something too powerful for the usage and blew out 3 times during the night and once the following morning- the said van owner kept flicking the switch so thought this was a bit inconsiderate to other users, as they clearly knew what the problem was!
If your a light sleeper you will hear the traffic from the main road. Like I did, which again is a bit of a shame as you wouldn't expect this given the location.
Plenty of water holes and refuge places scattered around the site. We paid £22 p/night with ehu and given the facilities I think this is a little steep- no children's playground and the run down vans. Can only presume the price is high for this site due to the new shower block which has recently been put in.
We didn't spend much time on the site due to heading into Holmfirth for the festival but I will stay here again same time next year, again for the festival as it only takes aprox 40 min to walk into Holmfirth via the main road or 30 min via woods (with children). I just hope that maybe there will be a few improvements by next year.
Overall the lady who checked us in was nice and I loved the pitch we ended up with. Will just turn a blind eye to the scruffy residential vans if the situation hasn't changed come next yr.
So if your coming here to do nothing other than relax after a walk or spot of fishing then book this site. But if you want a site with plenty going on then forget this site. Our two boys played football and rode their bikes and enjoyed it but they would have been fed-up after a day without a playground or if we hadn't taken them to the festival. The site is dog friendly and they don't charge for the dogs. See you again same time next year Holme Valley!

We visited this site and stayed for 3 nights from 22 August. The facilities were great. It was rather cold weather for the time of year, but the showers soon warmed us up. The new toilet block is really nice with the best showers I have had on a campsite. The only downside was the constant tripping of the electrical fuse on site due to the number of units. Definitely going to this one again.
Holmfirth was really nice with a large supermarket about a mile and a half away. Within striking distance of the national coal mining museum. Well worth a visit.

Nice friendly welcome. New toilet block is very good and a great improvement upon the old one. Touring pitches do not have pitch boundaries marked so we found ourselves regularly encroached upon with people sleeping overnight in a vehicle just 1. 5 metres from us and another car parked too close the other side! This situation arises when a campsite tends to cram too many units into an area and needs much better site management. Quality of campsite marred by excessive number of untidy static units. Unlikely to return here especially at weekends.

Disappointed with this site. We were given an area close to the pond that was not a pitch, it was a pathway. Kids and fisherman thought it was their right of way right across our pitch throughout our whole stay, we had no privacy at all. Our friends had a layby next to us but it was the strangest layout of pitches I've ever seen. They don't seem to keep any distance between units and we did think that maybe we didn't get such a bad deal when we looked around. There were cul de sacs of units that I'm sure were fairly noisy at night.
There are some sited caravans that looked like they had permanent residents in them - rabbits in hutches and hammocks hanging in trees. Their units looked dirty and none of them acknowledged our existence so wouldn't say it was the friendliest of sites. Most of the staff did not say hello either. However there was a young man that I felt went out his way to help us find the cider press. He ran over to the shop to get us directions which I was impressed with. There was also a friendly staff member that came over and was interested in our camper vans and asked if he could take some snaps for his Facebook page! Of course we obliged!
Lots of kids running around with bikes in the early evening, the play area looked tired. The shop was well stocked and the prices were pretty good. There is a snack wagon on site that we did not try. Worth noting that it doesn't open on a Bank hol Monday. The site was quite peaceful in the mornings though and you weren't woken by people moving around early.
The showers were a problem. The water dribbled down the pipe in front of you so you could collect it in your hands to throw over yourself. I was quite lucky that the water that dribbled in mine was warm, but my fellow campers did mention that they had cold ones. I think they overloaded the site with campers over the a Bank Holiday weekend that put pressure on everything. But the toilets were kept clean and on one occasion did not have toilet roll. They charge if you would like access to a family bathroom. We thought the charges were expensive and maybe should be reduced, however we did think the price was okay £17. 50 for a pitch with electric so the price is a fair one I believe.
The site is in a good location and is just over a mile from Holmfirth. We walked it a couple of times along the main road and we were sure this was quickest way although maybe not the most scenic. There is also another pub called Travelers Rest that is about 15 minute walk from the campsite and I would say that it looked popular and the food looked good. We stayed for a drink but think we would revisit for food.
We all agreed that we would not revisit this site. Shame really, it has the potential to be good place with some improvements.

Nice location next to the river. I stayed here for one day and would go back again. Shower block and facilities are of extremely good standard. The pitch was quite good and lots of space pitches to choose from. Price was good also at 6 pounds a person for small tent. Owner was accommodating as we didn't check in till late.

We stayed at the site for 3 days earlier this month during a visit to Holmfirth and the surrounding area. The site is set in lovely area around a small lake. There are several picturesque walks around the area. Holmfirth is a nice walk along the adjoining river.
The new shower block is of the highest standard, very clean and well maintained.
There was no wifi available at the time, and due to the many surrounding trees TV reception was limited to a couple of channels. Nonetheless we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would return if in the area.
