BRRRRRRRRRRR Just spent one night at Holmfirth it got down to minus 5 which tested both the tent and our resolve to try different sites and weather conditions
The site was clean apart from the fore mentioned long staying vans and on the whole it was ok
The shop was very well stocked and was open for a good part of the day
The toilets were clean and warm with a good supply of hot water
We were made welcome and given a choice of pitches one being the small field next to the river and the other being the main camping field
We chose the river site due to the ridiculous slope of the main field which had we pitched on it would have lead to us tobogganing down the slope in our sleeping bags when the temperature dropped during the night
The only thing that made the field next to the river accesible was the fact the ground was frozen otherwise as has been mentioned before we would have needed a tow to get both on and off
This site is clearly either a dry weather camping site or a caravan site with a spare field or two for hardy campers who don't mind the mud which is a shame because the location and the services on site are fabulous
We would like to return here when there has been a nice warm dry period and see just how good it can be in the right circumstances

This site is ideally suited several minutes from Holmfirth and Huddersfield. You could walk into Holmfirth if you wanted.
We wanted somewhere nearby to test some new tents and it's so close we could nip home if we needed to.
The onsite shop seemed to stock things that you might have needed and reasonably priced so that you weren't forced to find a nearby supermarket or shop.
We were sited in the upper field and we had to try and pick a flat space for both tents which was quite difficult as some of it is on a slight slope. We had images of someone rolling down the hill in their sleep.
The toilets/shower/shop were a short walk a way but were not always clean and I could see them being limited if the campsite was full.
There are some permanently sited caravans which didn't seem to be well cared for, which was a shame.
The local scenery was a joy, with a winding river running round the bottom of the site where you could walk as well as a fishing lake in the middle of the site.
I'm looking forward to returning early next year.

Just returned from a two night stay. The site needs some money spending on it as it looks very shabby. The resident caravans are filthy and create a grim and depressing atmosphere. The first thing we noticed was the horrendous smell (gas or the stagnant pond??)that seemed to waft around the site.
The shop was well stocked and cheap, the staff were helpful and polite. The sloping field was no real problem but the poor drainage was. The field was very muddy and due to the slope, some cars became stuck (one had to be pulled by a tractor).
Showers and toilets were clean and warm. Local pubs were good for eating out and reasonably close.

I think we must have stayed at a different site to everyone else. We arrived on the monday and were pitched on the newly renovated / turfed side near the pond, which was like a mud bath in places. Following a bit of rain the whole side was like a mud slide, even inside the awning we were paddling. In the end they had to fetch us some metal grates to put down and we were told that this was worse than before they had the new drainage system put in. I felt uneasy about my 5 yr old son going out as it was so slippy and I had a 7mth old with me as well.
The site shop was well stocked and staff in there pleasant. I feel the 'play area' was an understatement but we did find a nice playarea about 5 mins walk away.
The surrounding area is nice with nice areas to visit and the very friendly ducks wandering in and out the awning has my son amused and the visiting heron was a nice sight
Please dont think I am a moaner as I wasnt only one complaining about this part of the site and im sure when they have rectified the problem it will be better

Ok, I can't wait to go back to this site again!
It ain't 100% perfect but it isn't far off.
The shop on site is excellent and very cheap, eggs 14p each compared with cheapest egg in supermarket 19p - they are huge too. They sell their own label wine too at £3.49 a bottle and it is lovely. Even bread is cheaper than supermarkets. The kids were in their element with the choice of sweets.
All of the staff were lovely - helpful, cheerful, friendly and bent over backwards really to offer 100% customer service. Excellent!
The site is beautiful, the river flows to the rear of the site and is excellent for paddling. The lake is in the middle of the site and is so nice to look at. There are numerous woodland walks and a 10 minute walk takes you to the nearest village with fabby pub - pims cocktails a must.
The loos and showers were clean and very tidy despite the weather being very wet and the ground muddy - a mop was available in the ladies and to be honest I had no issues mopping the floor when we went in - this is a site that earns the respect.
There are 2 showers and 4 loos in the ladies and we never had to wait although my hubby had to wait for a shower in the men's - hmmm? He said the floor was muddy but it had rained and rained.
There were puddles and the ground was wet and muddy on the area that we pitched on - the rally field next door looked mud free and was a huge space for the kids to play.
The ducks - the highlight of our stay and we spent more money on feeding ducks than anything - so worth it though, they were entertaining. Don't let them creep into your tent though cause they deposit everywhere ;-). We loved the ducks, they were so tame they would eat out of our hands.
The playground - very basic, just a climbing frame with a slide - our kids didn't bother with it, too interested in the ducks. The stuff to do around the site compensated for lack of equipment in the playground - we could have spent a week here and the kids wouldn't have got bored even without a play area.
The only negative and it is a very small negative is pitch size - the pitches are very small, next door was close and we couldn't park the car next to the folding camper but we parked in front and to be honest it wasn't an issue - we had enough space - one other tiny neg was the ground which was very very muddy but it gets like that when it rains doesn't it.
I want to go back again soon and even my husband who likes to stay at a different site every time said that he'd like to go back again.
This is one of the best sites we have ever stayed at - beautiful!
Thank you to all the lovely staff!

We have just returned from a two night break at Holme Valley Campsite and we were very happy with it.
The field for tents had quite a slope on it but we arrived early and found a fairly flat part but you may struggle on a busy weekend.
The toilets were very clean and the showers (30p for 5mins) were hot and clean!
The shop is very well stocked and very reasonably priced and the staff are very helpful and friendly.
My only problem was with the people playing ball games near the cars and tents which did get pretty noisy (adults and kids!) and also loud music from other tents but I suppose you get this where ever you go.
On the whole a good campsite.

Larger units take care of the entrance (fairly tight)
Pitched next to the lake which was very nice but struggled to accommodate my Brothers larger Motorhome. He was moved somewhere more suitable without any fuss or delay.
Had a lovely meal at the Rock Pub 10 mins walk and very reasonable prices.(serves Carling)
Fishing was great, caught plenty of Skimmers,Roach and decent Bream.
Well stocked shop and not a rip off.
All in all a lovely site.
Going back in September.
Ducks are well Cheeky. LOL.

We had a lovely spot in the meadow, right next to the river, and being part of a large group, we had as good a time as we usually do when camping, which included a good old singalong with guitars.
However, we were soon visited by the owner, who informed us that we were being unfair and to 'pack it up'. I think there could have been nicer ways of putting it, as we were all apologetic and promised to keep it down. She said they had a curfew for noise at 11pm, but that was the first we had heard of it!
The next day, the area in front of our tents was transformed into a full-on Sunday League football game, and footballs were hitting cars, tents, and almost small children on several occasions. In my opinion, this was becoming a bigger problem than a bit of a sing-song on a night time, yet nothing was done about it.
On the plus side, the site is gorgeous, the shop is reasonable and well stocked, the bathroom facilities were clean and pleasant, but it is by no means the kind of campsite that a young group should go to. It's probably best for the older generation who just want a quiet break.

This is a very nice camp site with plenty of room to spread out, the top field can be a little on the steep side but overall it is well kept and clean and tidy.
There is a water tap in the top field by the gate to the toilets but can be tricky to find due to overgrown grass
On a night time there is plenty of lighting for the trips to the girls and boys room,(which are central heated) the only problem with this is you have to remember the bloody code for the toilet / shower block which at 4 in the morning can be trying to anyones mind.
The showers cost 30p (token) which are available from the site shop, which is well stocked with everything you should need with friendly family staff.
This site holds a small fishing pond which at £3.50 a day is well stocked with a variety of fish, and if you forget something you are only a 5 min drive away from the heart of the summer wine town, we would recommend the postcard pub which is on the main road in to town, which sells carling and for £5:00 you get a right platefull of food and will see you through to the next day
WILL RECOMMEND AND GO BACK AGAIN ! :-)

Although it is a couple of years since we stayed here, this is an excellent site. It is very quiet, because of the woods you cannot hear a thing from the road. The shop is more than well enough stocked for what you want. The showers and toilets (with key-pad entry) are always warm and clean. The 'Meadow' where you pitch your tent is good enough to not put you off if it has been raining as it is slightly sloped, just enough to get rid of the pesky water! There are some good walks by the river and 'Last Of The Summer Wine' country is very close at hand. Overall, a very good site with a lake in the middle for those fishermen out there. Never had a bad weekend there even at Bank Holiday.
