On arrival offered the 'overflow' field as some large groups were booked in and we have a small < 2yrs child. Very nice touch.
We were staying as Kirklees light railway (a few miles away) were running a "Thomas and Friends" weekend which I can highly recommend as a morning/day out with kids.
The overflow field is overlooked by some houses, which not intrusive does seem a bit 'weird'. Nicely sheltered though being in the bottom of a valley.
Nice clean and well stocked shop with good prices. Also recommend nipping into Honley for small co-op etc. Toilets small but generally clean. (with small child I was up nice and early so no rush for the showers - I don't know how busy they get!)
Per previous comments there are a lot of old grimy year round tourers there, they are also very cramped together (unlike the tent fields which are spacious).
There would be a nice woodland walk if it wasn't completley (and I mean completely!) overidden by dog poo (from campers dogs and local residents dogs). Unfortunatley this means you have to travel off site to enjoy some countryside.

This is the second time we have used this site and we won't be coming again! Although the site is well run and popular, it is very cramped. Units are parked too close together and access to many pitches is very narrow with lots of overhanging trees, cunningly positioned to remove aerials from the roofs of caravans and motor-homes. The entrance track is long, winding and only just wide enough for a caravan in many places, it is also bordered by drystone walls. Although the owners accept units of all sizes, owners of big, twin axle vans or large motor-homes should be very wary. We hit a wall whilst negotiating the tight, narrow left hand bend at the entrance to the site, causing some £600 of damage to our 8 metre caravan. We also saw a motor-home lose its TV aerial to a overhanging tree whilst leaving the park.

I have recently stayed on site at Holme Valley camp site. What a great shop and really nice staff. The site has good toilet and shower blocks that were clean and warm! The real down side to our stay was that the site is very small and most of the pitches are allocated to long term rentals who do not seem to take care of there caravans which makes the site look very scruffy. The pitch we stayed on was right in front of the pond which was very nice until we were woken by fishermen sat right in front of our van being quite loud and drinking cider out of a bottle! Not a nice sight first thing in a morning. Overall the stay was ok but I think the site just need to revamp its rule for on site long term letting and get the owners to keep there vans in a better state of repair!

September 2005 Me, my husband and 2 sons all enjoyed this site. My eldest son enjoys fishing so this was a plus, the toilet and shower block was clean and warm, well stocked shop. The town of Holmfirth is a lovely little place, a pleasant weekend all round, will definately use again.

August 2005 We spent two nights on this site - only the second time out in our Dandy camper. I didn't want to leave and will definitely be back. With the exception of the occasional passing siren the site is really peaceful. Shop good and well stocked. Toilets clean, warm and secure and the staff really friendly. One friendly member of staff off duty showed us the way back to the site when we got lost on a walk. Definately be back, hopefully in October. The only downside is that the small tracks on and off the site are easily missed.

August 2005 Just returned from a 2 night stay, and to be quite honest, I hated every minute of it.
There are 2 fields for tents , the RALLY field which is nice and flat, but some way from all facilities and the sloping field, which did look quite uncomfortable for the the campers sited there.
The site is credited as having 62 pitches, which is an understatment. There might be 62 available pitches after the permenantly sites vans are allocated, but as we went when the site was more or less full, the facilities cannot accomodate that amount of people. Also very noisy due to main road next to camp site and also in a flight path for either LEEDS BRADFORD or MANCHESTER Airport.
Dont get me wrong this is a nice well presented site, Very nice owners , Well presented & well stocked shop.
I just found with the amount of noise and amount of people on site, I could not relax.
This has the potential to be an excellent site, but there needs to be more control over the amount of noise generated by the youngsters after a certain time limit.
Had no problems with earlier reports of discoloured water
All in All probably would make a nice weekday retreat but busy at weekends.
The Ducks are brilliant to watch in the mornings as ther trail from tent to tent looking to see if there is anything for them.
Anyway probably wouldnt return, but could make a decent retreat with little time and effort involved.

July 2005 Lovely site not far from the busy town of Holmfirth.Great for kids and dogs, river and lake on site. Play area only really for small kids and over by the shop and toilet out of sight of the camping field. Very helpful staff and very friendly... we will be returning.

July 2005 I took my 2 children to this site for 2 nights last weekend. It was quite a last minute thing and I phoned on Friday morning. The lady on the phone was very helpful and I would'nt have found the site had she not told me where the entrance is as there is only the brown and cream sign at the top of the lane. When we arrived we were told where the field was. It is on a slope and by Saturday afternoon I was fed up with things falling off the table! After we had pitched the tent we went for a walk round.
There is a nice walk by the river. When we got back I was slightly puzzled that cars came into the field then went again, however the children said later that the rally field had now got tents in too. Had I known this was available we would have been better in this field, although it is quite a way away from the toilets it is nice and flat.
The campsite is quite near the main road and noise was a bit of a downside. The police station was not far down the road and they like to use their sirens.
The shop is well stocked and open all day. the toilets although looking a bit tired are kept clean. Some soap dispensers would be nice as you don't usually carry a bar of soap each time you go to the loo. Having to remember a 6 figure code to get into the toilet block can be a bit of a nuisance also we ended up writing it down on our arms so we could remember it.
There are quite a few caravans on the site that don't look as if they've moved for a few years and that looked a bit grotty as their awnings were dirty from being under trees and they all seemed to have containers of flowers etc outside. My children took their bikes as they can usually ride around on site but I did'nt really want them going on the track as I could imagine it being a bit dangerous and there was'nt really anywhere to go in the field. All in all this is a reasonable campsite, it's cheap and ok for a couple of nights away. I would'nt recommend for any length of time though.

May 2005 We visited for 1 night to try our folding camper out for the first time, Holme valley is only 30 mins drive from our house. We couldn`t belive how wonderful the site is. It has a fishing lake in the middle and a river surrounds it. The owners are very helpful and take you to your pitch. The shop has very reasonable prices and stocks all the usuall things you might need.Showers and toilets are spotless. There`s a small playground suitable for small children. We were unsure if our cooker would work as we hadn`t tried it at home so we ordered a fantastic takeaway from the local Indian and they delivered to the site. We only went to try the camper out but found a ideal spot to visit on a regular basis, we`ve already booked our next visit.

April 2005 The access road to the site is very narrow and is in need of repair, it is also very tight to get to the so called hard standings. One of our party damaged the van because the hawthorn hedges have not been cut back. The hard standings are in desperate need of renovation along with the rest of the site, it rained when we were there and our pitch turned into a mud bath (some hardstanding) The pitches are more suitable for smaller vans, we had to turn our van sideways because the a frame was stuck out into the road. There are only three toilets and two showers in the gents and four toilets and two showers in the ladies this is no where near enough for the amount of pitches on the site. Part of the site looks like a shanty town with caravans that have been there so long that the vans and awnings are green. The whole site has become dated and is in need of renovation and up-dating. We will not be going back.
