Arrived early afternoon Friday and was offered the option of the top field. We had noticed this was very sloped and asked if there was another choice and the girl in the shop offered to show us the quiet field. The quiet field is very small and shaded. On the walk back to the shop my husband and I um'd and ah'd about which was the best choice and opted for the top field as it was basking in sunlight. The girl said 'well whatever you choose.

So, we pitched and about 6pm went to the shop (out of courtesy) to let them know we'd chosen the top field (the girl wasn't there) and were told. 'The top field was never an option for you, we have a large booking on Saturday night and there isn't room for you' I gently advised this was not the case we had actually been offered the top field first and we had been pitched for more than 3 hours. There was no way I was moving.

Any way, having said all that I have to say that the same person in the shop was more than pleasant for the rest of our stay.

Location: very close to Holmfirth, the bus H4 stops just at the end of the lane and cost us £1.80 for 2 adults to travel into Holmfirth.

There is a lovely walk along the river into Holmfirth, which will take a reasonable walker about 30 mins.

The site is situated around a lake and river with lots of friendly ducks, so take bread!

The top field is sloped but you just have to pick your spot (and level out the cooker). The quiet field is beautiful but is very shaded by the surrounding trees; the field at the bottom seemed ideal but was busy. There are a lot of caravans on the site that I assume have been there years, some of these are very dirty and let the appearance of the site down. I think the owners of the site should encourage these to be washed.

Toilets: are clean and at busy times were moped almost constantly. The showers are 30p for 5 mins and tokens can be purchased from shop. I was a little bit disappointed as the shower/toilet block wasn't great and I’ve used nicer facilities on sites charging a similar pitch fee per night. However, I have used much worse. The water is HOT. There are 2x plug sockets free of charge for hairdryers etc

Shop/Reception: The shop is also the reception, and shuts 8pm Mon to sat and 6pm on Sunday. The prices are really reasonable, but it was a shame that there wasn't any fresh meat to buy, ie all they had to cook (if you aren't in a caravan with working oven) was frozen burgers, frozen sausage or egg and bacon. However, the coop is a short bus ride so not too much of a problem. Ice pack can be frozen free of charge.

Overall we enjoyed the stay and probably will go back, the atmosphere on the top field was lovely, kids playing, a couple of dogs joining in, and even a group effort to jump start a car, there is a pub a 5 minute walk away and the bus stop is opposite which makes it attractive for visiting Holmfirth, this campsite has so much going for it that I think the owners might be missing.

I.E. Better customer service, cleaning the place up a bit, investing a bit into the toilets (there are only 2 showers for the whole site), tents are an afterthought and the site seems really more geared toward caravans and the tents come second. Trees are absolutely beautiful but maybe cut some back around the lake as some areas of the site never caught the sun, despite the weekend being glorious.

Visited this site in May. First impressions were of the many touring vans with permanent residents. They looked dirty and rather off putting and not what we expect for a holiday site. Shame they were right near the shop / reception and couldn't be somewhere else on the site where they wouldn't be so obvious! It would have been nice if this particular area could have been developed for the touring vans of holiday makers.

Toilets and showers rather small and could do with an update but otherwise clean.

Well stocked shop which obviously does well from the permanent residents.

Lovely area, but don't think we'd revisit.

Just returned from a weekend on this site, we went for the fishing, which I must say for winter months was not bad. We were pitched right next to the lake, which was supposed to be hard standing, but this was extremely muddy, due to the fact there did not seem to be enough stones to stop the mud coming through on the pitch. There is a well stocked shop, toilets and shower block were clean and warm. Possibly the only downside, there seemed to be lots of permanently sited caravans and motorhomes, some of which were really dirty and made the site look a bit unkept. We came from up North on a Friday teatime and the traffic through leeds and Huddersfield was horrendous, adding another hour onto our journey. Would we return, possibly not although the setting and surroundings were lovely, just a little bit too much of a hassle for the journey down.

The site is located on the outskirts of Holmfirth and although we walked back from there one afternoon it is a bit further than we thought.

The site itself is set in a great location in the valley bottom and surrounds the small lake which can be fished, and has a selection of hard and grassed areas for pitching and include EHU, there is a small well stocked shop on site and sells everything you could need and the prices were surprisingly low for a site shop.

There was quite a lot of caravans that looked like permanent residents but I didn't see any statics on site and because the site is set within a wooded setting some of these vans looked scruffy an dirty as they were covered in green algae and foliage debris.

The toilet and showers were to a reasonable standard, they were kept clean, and the hot water was hot and plenty of it (30p tokens required for the showers).

If you like to visit the local pubs then the nearest one is The Rock a 5 or 10 min walk away ( brisk walk in the rain one way, dry steady coming back )it serves good Thwaites ales and serves great food.

The only negative point I can make is that we were adjacent to the lake next to the reception and although we were on hard standing because the area tends to get frequent visits from all the ducks it was very muddy and dirty around our van and we found it very difficult to move around freely without blathering ourselves and the van in muck.

All in all not a bad little site, give it a go.

Did not get off to the best of starts, arrived just after 2pm and the office was closed, met by a gardener/handyman who gave us the choice of 3 pitches. We went fot the one overlooking the river as the others were a bit dark/hemmed in and I am fighting the winter depression as it is! We were told we would need to park close to a caravan already there as HE had parked in the wrong place and they needed to get 2 other caravans in the same row. (We were made to feel in the wrong due to our neighbour pitching in the wrong place - how does that work then??) And to make matters worse we were watched by the gardener/handyman into the pitch to ensure we didn't get take extra space! I hate being watched when pitching!

Small is not the word I would use for the pitch sizes here. We were so close to the next van there would have been just enough space for our porch awning if our neighbour didn't mind having it right up to his window.

None too happy on seeing how close we were to our neighbour I paid the reception a visit once it opened at 4.30pm. She came to look and agreed we could move over 6 feet but was not very forthcoming in doing so.

We were made to feel in the wrong due to our neighbour pitching in the wrong place - how does that work then??

Entire afternoon wasted and just about got settled in before darkness fell.

Toilets okay, used caravan shower so can’t comment on them. Looked only to be a two and it’s quite a big site. Disliked the keypads on the entrance doors, which are very fiddly to use, and some would find them a challenge. Looked to be a very well stocked shop but didn’t need any provisions whilst there. We always visit Hinchlifffe’s when in this neck of the woods which is a working farm with shop, butchers and a restaurant. Their award winning pork pies and sausages are the best!

And if you fancy dining out somewhere a bit special go to the Three Acres in nearby Shelley but make sure you book its very popular and you will see why!

Walk into Holmfirth is 1.7 miles not a mile as stated, worth bearing in mind if attending a concert at the Picturedrome. Check who is on as they get some great artists, its one of my favourite music venues, and you can pay on the door space permitting. We were there to see The Zombies, wow Colin Blunstone still has an amazing voice, however I digress!

Take plenty of bread for the ducks; they were the high point for us on this site!

2nd trip to this site, and this time had to pitch on the top field as we arrived on a thursday and bottom field wasn't open til friday. The top field is well slopped and struggled cooking as had to constantly hold the pans as failure would lead to pan falling off. Spilt loads owing to slope. Will not pitch on top field again. Also was eaten alive by midges on top field so anti bite is a must. As for facilities and friendlyness 100% spot on.

We were looking for a nice quiet site for a couple of nights and we were not disappointed!

We arrived on friday afternoon in the rain, we were put in the ultra quiet field which was empty so we did manage to find a dry spot right next to the river.

I could not find fault with any of the amenities-

Toilets and showers were kept very clean.
The main site and rally field were lovely.
On site shop was well stocked and reasonably priced.
On the whole a very quiet site, we will return next season, though I wouldn't advise taking any teenage tearaways (ours were away with friends for the weekend) as its just not that type of site.

We went into holmfirth on friday night for a few drinks and a meal, after sampling every pub there we were recommended to try the Massala Lounge and I have to say the king prawn madras was out of this world, all very reasonably priced and a complementary coffee to finish off a great evening.

This was a pretty late booking, but the owners were very friendly and helpful and showed us where they wanted is to pitch.

I have to say I was a little disappointed to be put in the top field which was very sloped when the bottom field was practically empty- would have been nice to get the choice! I hate the feeling of rolling downhill at night. The bottom field is flat and next to the river- very scenic. I would try to get on there if you can.

The facilities were great, very clean and the little shop on site was well stocked. I loved the pond and the woods surrounding the campsite- there are several wooded walks you can take from the campsite itself which was nice. Although not far from the main road, you couldn't hear any road noise which is a big plus!

Dont have children, but the play area didn't look too amazing. There are lots of other things to do for kids though.

The campsite was well lit at night, but not too overpowering. Many of the lights were on triggers as you walked past. There was a curfew at 11 and it was pretty quiet and relaxing.

Would return here again if I could camp at the bottom field!

This was our third visit and not the last - possibly the most relaxing site we have visited.

We always ask to pitch next to the river just so we can watch our kids paddling, this keeps them occupied for hours.

The muddy grass of last year has been replaced with stones which, don't look as nice but is much improved, we managed to pitch with the grass banking to sit out on.

Catherine greeted us and was fantastic in showing us where to pitch and even helping us push the caravan into place - I have never known such helpful site employees.

The shop was as fantastic as ever with prices still reasonable this year.

The showers were ok, clean enough and always hot, even with a nearly full site, we didn't have to wait.

The walks along the river and though the woods was brilliant and the wildlife wonderful, no Heron this time but the ducks were fantastic amusement for the kids.

We can't fault this site.

Spent the weekend under canvas on the site. Was a wet weekend, so went in the upper field, got the last top spot, like others have said about all fields, river spot would be good, but very boggy at the time we were there. Bottom field was very busy.
Had no probs with the loo's etc, they did very well to keep the floors clean with how wet it was. Shop is well stocked and the prices are not to high. Have a pot noddle machine, which the kids loved, noodles big part of camping.
Ground was very boggy on leaving, but put down hardcore to get out of gateways, which helped a lot.
Brockholes village is a 5 mins walk from site and there is a pub, P.O, costcutters, takeaway, playpark (which had a lot of empty beer cans in !) Holmfirth has plenty to offer as well.
At 12.50 for 1 adult and 2 kids per night, a good stay was had even if bit wet.
