We were looking for a quiet place in beautiful surroundings near Ringwood to pitch our tent, and Back of Beyond was just that. The field for the tents was set back from the caravans in a lovely field surrounded by oak trees giving us a lovely exclusive feel. The toilets and shower blocs were nice - lovely hot water pressure in the showers. Highly recommended for tents, nice and quiet without being too "serious" or "solemn".

Just spent a lovely week at Back of beyond (in spite of torrential rain for first couple of days). The site is very pretty, the owners are really welcoming, the pitches are a good size and are flat. It is in a great location for exploring the New Forest, Bournemouth and Poole, Southampton etc. The showers etc are adequate, though they were perhaps stretched over the bank Holiday weekend. We really appreciated the security at the entrance (barrier operated by swipe card). Downsides - There is some traffic noise though it is rarely intrusive, and there is some aircraft noise as you are close to Bournemouth Airport, but it is occasional. There are only two washing up sinks, and one of these is on the back wall of the shower block with no shelter, so for the first two days when it poured with rain it wasn't practical to use it. A bit of shelter would improve things. The drive really is very poor though. We had a trailer and it was bouncing around all over the place. They could do with filling a few of the pot holes. Out and about - Sainsburys is five minutes away, and there is a good Chinese Take Away nearby (the Panda - menus in reception) There is also a chippy and a pizza/Kebab take away in the same row of shops but we didn't try those so can't vouch for them. Things to do - The walk from Beaulea(?) to Bucklers Hard is good, or go to Milford on Sea and walk out along the shingle spit to the Fort (at the end you are closer to the Isle of Wight than to the mainland). If town centres are your thing try Southampton, lots of parks and open spaces.

A very quiet site set half a mile off the a31. Found site with no problem after reading other reviews and the campsite lane is not as bad as a lot say. Toilet block nice and clean, small shop in reception and owners very helpful. Lookout for red deer in the next field along with ducks rabbits and squirrel's that were just some of the wildlife seen from our caravan during a lovely week on this site. Places to visit all within 10-15 miles of site are Bournemouth, Christchurch and the New Forest all great days out.

Amazed to see the site almost full in April then realised most of the vans were empty just being stored on the pitches - great for them but leaving little choice of pitch for anyone else. Toilets ran out of paper on the Sunday morning and a good clean would do them no harm at all ! Showers only stay on (push button) for 17 seconds so a very stop start type shower which is great for saving water but not so good for washing shampoo out of your hair. The river is not moving so has become stagnant and smelly. The woodland walk is great for the dogs and easy walking but was made fraught by dogs running around off lead and out of control. Slightly cliquey feel to the site with all the permanent people knowing each other well and the casual visitors not being very welcomed but the site owners were very friendly and helpful. Grass needs cutting but that could be due to the weather but we aren't tempted to go back and see if it has been done as we have visited other better adult only sites. The all-inclusive pitch fees aren't really, as you need another ten pounds for the gate card and dogs are charged at one pound per night each.

I read previous comments about the state of the lane leading up to the site and yes - it is awful, especially when fully laden. Like others I found it difficult to locate. From Ringwood, the site is on the opposite side of the A31 dual carriageway - go past The St. Leonards Hotel and at the next island, turn back the opposite way and it's the first turning on left (see sign for the Shamba site). Be warned - the drivers here are very fast and bad tempered and drive very close to your rear bumper. They do not care that you are going slow due to not knowing where you are going or are fully laden! The A31 is a very busy road at all times, even Sundays. But onto the positive aspects. This is a great site. The owners are friendly and helpful, the pitches are big. This is our first experience of an "adults only" site and what a difference it makes. It is so peaceful. As others have noted, the shower block is always clean, shame there is not more washing up sinks (one outside and one inside one of the ladies loos). There is a woodland walk and a pitch and putt course if you need something to do. The reception sells basic groceries like bacon, eggs, sausages, beans and ice cream in case you run out or have forgotten to pack them. The nearest pub is 20 minutes walk - just go back up the lane (YOU NEED TO TAKE A TORCH AT NIGHT) and turn right onto the A31 - it's just 10 minutes from there. It is reasonably priced, serves real ale and the food is ok, although some of the daily specials are boil in the bag catering packs. If you fancy a cooked breakfast locally, then visit Sainsbury's, just 5 minutes away. If you fancy a curry, go to "The Curry Garden" in centre of Ringwood, one of the best I have had anywhere. There is a fully stocked camping shop just a couple of minutes away on the Oakdene site, it's got everything you could need. This site is ideal for touring the New Forest, it's just 5 minutes away - I have never seen so many thatched roofs. I would recommend this site to anyone looking for some peace and quiet without children.

Not that hard to find, but not that easy either, just look for the sign for Shamba on the A31 Eastbound and keep going on up the lane to the top. Very nice, flat and quiet site, with large pitches, lakes and woodland walks, living up to it's name with friendly and helpful management. Great for first time evers like us. Mainly caravans and tents, with some lovely secluded pitches. Toilets and showers excellent, clean, with loads of hot water on a well maintained site in general. Looks busier than it is as lots of "static" vans there for the season but not always occupied. Very dog friendly, and only spoilt for us by one inconsiderate dog owner with 5 very large dogs, who was happy to let them foul our pitch. (Beware of Sha-Pei Rescue!) Had we been there for longer we would have moved to a lower field which we discovered is dog free. 3/4 mile stroll to local pub/restaurant which was good value for money, all other facilities are only a short drive away. Highly recommended if you like peace and quiet, and are not bothered by the fact there are no bars, cafes, or pools on site.

We found the site easily, thanks to previous reviews. The road down to the site was very bumpy, so take care if towing. Site was very quiet, ideal for a relaxing break. The toilet/shower blocks were always spotlessly clean, always hot water available - and also has free hairdriers!
The only criticism we had was, if you have a tent, be careful where you pitch it. If you pitch on 'block D' don't go near the chemical waste disposal, as the smell at times was disgusting - this is not marked on the map you are given on arrival.
A really enjoyable stay, with two good pubs within walking distance. The Woodmans does two meals for the price of one, and food at the St. Leonards Hotel was also very reasonably priced.

September 2005 Arrived here around 5pm on a Friday for a weekend stay.
Was fairly shcoked to find the main field with the hook up was almost completely full mostly with caravans. We were expecting to be fairly alone at this time of year.
However you must explore the site before pitching up. There are several glades off the main field and I was able to pitch in one of these and trail my hook up lead 5m or so through the trees and plug in to electric in the main field but still be fairly isolated. A hook up or 15m or over might help you get more isolated through the tree-line.
The main reason I booked at an adults only site was for peace and quiet. I don't think I heard another raised voice during the whole two days I was there. The weather was brilliant and people were just sitting in the sunshine and doing whatever they liked but in virtual silence. It was a wonder! Everyone there respected the silence and was enjoying the silence at the same time... wonderful!
Site owner was friendly on arrival and fairly knowledgeable about the area. I did get lost trying to find the place, it is pretty poorly sign posted. The glade I pitched in was flat and about 80% grassed with some bald patches. the pitch and put course is only for fun. It's basically 9 flag holes plonked in a large lighly wooded field. There are no greens as such and the areas around the flags were pretty rough! They had no left handed clubs though! Played boules as well. Both were free although they asked for a donation to some cancer charity.
Shower and toilet facilites wer clean. However I went for a shower around 2pm after a run and there was no hot water! The road is still heavily potholed, but they are far enough apart to drive around them.
All in all a nice place, rabbits and squirrels were abound every morning and evening, very cute!

August 2005 We stayed at the campsite over the bank holiday weekend and can only say what a fantastic site it is. I agree that the directions are difficult to understand and we did go round the roundabout several times before seeing the signage but it was well worth it. Coming from Ringwood look out for the coach / bus park on your left, as you approach the roundabout turn to your right and then sharp left signposted Shamba campsite.
Facilities great, showers always hot,(but please other campers wipe the floor with the mop provided after use!) very peaceful and all campers were respectful of each others space. On arrival we were given time to look around and decide where we wanted to be which was great and you immediately felt at ease. Thank you to Mel and Sue. We are definitely going back.

July 2005 Quiet(ish), clean and easy.
General:
There is some noise from the main road so this site is not as tranquil as other adult only sites. Fantastic private woodland for dog walks and pitch and putt. Shop is basic with fresh bread in the mornings and news papers on request. There are many caravans pitched all year and many were empty when we visited. I especially like the "Pitch where you want" policy although it did lead to one caravanner pitching within 2 meters of an absent VW camper - Please do not pitch close to awnings with absent vans !
Groans:
Some of the toilet cubicles had run out of paper on Sunday morning - beware !
Fishing:
The "naturally stocked" pond is not very deep and there is little evidence of any fish. I fished for a day without a nibble. I spoke to some other fishermen walking around the ponds who had heard rumours that someone had once caught a couple of Roach. The "river" is no more than a stream and not a serious fishing prospect. The fishing is free so one can't complain, lets hope the owners stock the pond soon.
