Had a lovely stay here recently. Very friendly site and the owners were lovely too. The facilities are spotless and maintained to a high standard. A few trains went by on the nearby bridge but this didn't bother me at all, in fact, I rather liked it and thought it gave the place a quirky charm along with the friendly ducks that came to visit our tent. It is very near to Stanage Edge, Ladybower, Derwent and Howden dams and the Bluejohn mine and many other places. I would definitely go again. Highly recommend.

The site is really well located for walking and biking in the Hope valley. There is a station 2 minutes walk, so it is easy to go out on the train, eg. Edale or hathersage then take a walk back. Petrol station shop 5 mins walk, Anglers Rest pub 10 mins walk. Garden centre with bike hire, 10 mins walk. Friendly welcome from the managreress. Pitches decent size, most with hard standing, however most are permanently occupied by long term vans, half of which have nobody in them, which can be a bit frustrating if you can't get in. Site itself was quiet, and well looked after. The permanent residents all seem to be constructing gardens and structures to make second homes. The negatives, some days there was no hot water in the showers, this happened at 830am, and 4pm, other days there was plenty hot water. The train line is elevated and is right next to the site, trains are frequent through out the day and evening, but not too noisy, the noisy ones are the massive bulk trains carrying cement or stone, and these were very infrequent but did thunder past in the early hours a couple of times. Would go back.

We have just returned from 4 days at this great site, the owners are very friendly and helpful, the site is beautifully maintained, the toilets and showers are immaculate and the location is ideal for walks. The Anglers Rest pub in Bamford village is now a community owned pub, post office, cafe and restaurant run by villagers. We had 3 meals there and the food was great, such generous portions that we struggled to finish! the pub is now warm, friendly and welcoming. We cant think of anything negative about this place and will go again

Having had a lovely stay here a couple of years ago we chose to return with family and booked two pitches together. We knew about the train noise (and it is very noisy with trains running from 6. 45 to 10. 45pm right next to your pitch) but we were fine with that. As usual we were greeted in a lovely friendly way by the lady who owns the site and directed to where our family had already pitched their caravan. Here lies our first massive disappointment. The motorhome pitch has been squeezed in to a corner not wide enough to stand out onto hard standing. Very narrow. If reversed on your door opens on to next doors car ( a season pitch) and the tiny triangle of grass left is the only access point to the picnic area. No privacy at all! If you pull on as we ended up doing, you have to share the outside pitch with your neighbour. So my family and us shared the outside space. That I could have accepted however at this side was the access to a public footpath and so everyone used the pitch to access it. Privacy. Err. None existent. It was like Piccadilly Circus! The site was full which resulted in the electric going off 3 times one night and no hot water in the showers. My brother had to rescue his grand daughter from the cold showers and take her to the mens. By now we were not at all happy, but taking it in our stride so as not to spoil the break. Then the lady who owns the site was passing and I took the opportunity to politely say, that as return visitors we were really disappointed with things. She was more concerned about telling us what an inconvenience it was for her having to come out and sort the electric and that we should expect loss of power and no hot water as they were busy! Having said again how disappointed we were she finally promised to come and talk to us the next say and sort out a refund. Happy with that we awaited her visit. It never happened! Not one for confrontation we just left, the following day but will never return. If nothing else, it would have simply been polite for her to come and see us - clearly that was too much trouble! What a shame!

Management response: In response to this review we can once again offer our apologies for the customers disappointment. This was offered at the time and as the group left without seeing us on the Monday morning, as had been suggested to them, an e-mail was forwarded to the person who had booked the stay, that day (11.06 am), to offer compensation by way of free nights stays with us in the future. A copy of this e-mail has been submitted to ukcampsite.co.uk to prove our acknowledgement of the complaint.
As the review states that they will not be returning then regrettably this will not be possible. We do not consider that this review is completely accurate. Problems with electricity tripping at busy times on cold evenings is due to people using household items with high wattages when the supply they are provided with is only capable of a maximum of 2.3kw. If somebody uses a high wattage household kettle and not a camping kettle or a household heater, together with other electrical items then the electricity will trip.
Anybody who has stayed at our site will confirm that we do not class resetting electricity an inconvenience merely part of our job. Obviously the person who has left this review was upset that the electricity was off for a period of time and that she had had to suffer a cold shower (for which we did offer our apologies), but we worked hard to rectify these problems as quickly as possible at the time.
With regard to the pitches, these were allocated due to the fact that the two units were together otherwise they would have been on different pitches on the site and would not have been next to each other. Presumably this would also not have been acceptable.
The comment with regard to the public footpath has been addressed.
We appear to be in a ‘no win’ situation and the saying ‘you can’t please all of the people all of the time’ springs to mind – even when you try your hardest! |

Being a hot weekend, everywhere we could find was full. All it took was a quick call, and they said, as long as we can squeeze on the end of the grass, we could have a pitch (for a very reasonable £12). It was good of them considering the weather that weekend, and how full they seemed.
The site itself it well maintained, with a central tap, and the best toilet/shower facilities I've seen of any campsite. The shower blocks look brand new, with small touches that make it more comfortable (floor squidgy after showers, etc).
Another bonus is how close the car-park is, and that there is in itself a separate car-park away from the tents.
Checkout is 11:30, check-in from 12, which is very reasonable.
Down the road there is the Anglers (turn left) which is a 10 minute walk, but with no food and more of a locals pub, it's best off having a trip up to the Yorkshire Bridge (mile and half) for some great food. Very walkable, and mostly pathed.
Defiantly coming back later in the year.

Just returned from a lovely stay at this site. This was a last minute decision to go and we didn't wanna travel too far from home. What a good choice it proved to be. We were made to feel very welcome from the moment we arrived and shown to our pitch. The grass was perfectly flat and a great idea to have a picnic bench next to each pitch, very useful.
The showers/toilets were spotless and very well looked after.
There is no play area, we have a 3 year old boy, but he was more than happy to play on the grass with his scooter and loved feeding the very friendly ducks.
The site is in easy reach of some really nice places, castleton, bakewell etc so its an ideal place to stay.
As other reviews have said you are directly next to a train line, but we found that no problem at all, my lad loved watching them fly past.
So glad we have now found somewhere close to home and will definitely return very soon.

We (my wife and I) had a great camping experience at Swallowholme C&C park starting with a warm and friendly welcome by the owner.
At this time of year, the site was not full, but we had several neighbours and had plenty of privacy room to accommodate our Bear-Lake 4 tent and easy accessible EHU.
Toilets and washing facilities were very clean and certainly no hot water issues experienced. There are some steps to climb to get to them, but not problem for for us, but may be for some.
The area was very scenic and felt quite remote (and only 1/2 hour away from our Chesterfield hometown) - however, if you like walking, this is obviously a well-renowned area for that preference - during our stay we came across hundreds of back-packers in the area. Being a tad lazy ourselves - we made use of the car to travel to several nearby villages - including Buxton town.
Within a couple of minutes walking distance form the site there is a filling station/shop that is fairly well stocked for provisions(ok - it sells booze too, for medicinal purposes of course)
Overall, for us, this wee gem of a site is well worthy of its review rating and we will most definitely recommend a camping stay :-)

Have just stopped for 1 night. Site was very easy to find and access.
Was greeted by a very friendly and helpful owner. Shortly followed by 2 ducks.
Relatively small and quiet site with a clean shower and toilet block. Even loved the proper taps - made a pleasant change to not need to hold down them down and hope they stopped on long enough to get wet
Was given some great advice by the owner (not the ducks) about a nearby dis-used railway that takes you safely and directly to the reservoirs in Derwent Valley (about 2 - 3 miles away).
There's a carboot on every other Sunday in Hope (about 3. 5 miles).
You are next to a railway line but can honestly say it didn't cause a problem at all.
There is a nearby recreation playground for kids
There's a convenience store / garage about half mile in 1 direction and a pub (The anglers rest) in the other direction. They even had free dips on the bar and table - bargain
All in all - would happily recommend

Very nice site and the owners are very friendly and helpful. The tent area is not huge but plenty of room and electric hook ups. I did hear the trains through the night but my wife never woke once from them so its a bit of a personal thing, although in the day and the evening sitting outside the tent they are quite nice to watch pass by.
The toilets and showers were spotless and they seemed to clean them very regularly (rather than just mornings and afternoons like some sites).
The shop/ garage at the end of the road is close and has a bit of every thing. We went to bradwell to the co-op for 'big shop'
Brilliant location for walking either drive to castlton & Hathersage or there are a few good walks from off the site.
I agree with the earlier comments about the anglers arms we tried it and found it was lacking in atmosphere and smiles, the Yorkshire bridge inn is much nicer.
For anyone wanting to explore the area I would totally recommend this site

Just returned from 2 lovely nights at Swallowholme Campsite. Booking over the phone was simple and friendly and upon arrival the owners were very helpful and efficient. The site was very quiet with only a handful of other guests although there were a lot of touring caravans pitched up but empty.
The rain never stopped for 2 days (to be expected for Derbyshire at the end of October!) which did turn the pitch into a muddy quagmire (as the pitches are grass not hard standing). This is not a complaint, just an observation as it did not detract from our enjoyment.
The facilities (toilet block, showers and wash room) were all spot on and kept very clean. Plenty of soap and hot water so no complaints there.
Yes the site is near to a fairly busy railway line and trains do go past regularly but once asleep we were never woken by them. All in all a handy location for Castleton, Hathersage and Ladybower and although no views of rolling fields or pretty countryside we would happily return.
