We turned up on the spur of the moment, at the last moment on a Bank Holiday. I know, I hear you say, that's probably not the best idea you've had; you would be right normally.
We had visited the site in 2003, and thought we would see if it was still there. We had loved it the first time round, and weren't disappointed this time round either.
We were welcomed by one of the new owners. We explained our situation, she got her partner. They were very helpful, they gave us a pitch at the end of the campsite (luckily for us). An added bonus for us, was there was a picnic table near the pitch. We ended up playing snap on this later on.
The ducks were still there, and are cheeky (we loved this and did the time before). We fed them, and so did the little girl from the next pitch. Be warned though, you feed one, you feed them all(she found this out, the hard way).
The site has been updated and modernised, showers are great, atmosphere lovely, there is a little bit of train noise (occasionally). But we never really noticed - as the location was great for: shops, Hope, The Devils Arse, Snakes Pass Inn, Ladybower, and there was also supposed to be fishing nearby (if that's your thing, or your partners).
Everyone was well behaved, the owners even did a walk around at night and early morning. The site was very tidy and welcoming. You cant ask for more, or for better. Oh, and only £16 for the night (non hook up). Thanks to them for a lovely stay.

We wanted somewhere to stay whilst visiting friends in Sheffield. We spent two nights here and then a further night one week later. The owners were fantastic, came out in the pouring rain to show us where to set up, so we didn't have to get wet finding the reception.
The washing facilities were impressive: scrupulously clean and even had piped radio.
The only downside from our point of view was the Sheffield-Manchester railway line clipped the corner of the site with regular trains up to about 11 pm.
Yes, we will definitely visit this site again.

Just returned from 3 nights Wed-Fri. Really clean, tidy, site. Owners helpful, put my ice pack in their freezer night before we had day out at Chatsworth. Cats very friendly! Toilets always clean with plenty of toilet roll.
Showers also very clean. Be careful you don't put anything on the stool, it will get wet. Otherwise plenty of hot water, on push button timer. Toilet/dishwash is up quite a few steps, so may not be very accessible for some.
Trains do run by fairly often and a couple of times during the night. It is quite loud at night, but we got used to it and went straight back to sleep. Our 8 year never stirred once, (except for the loo!)
There are no ball games, but we checked with owner for swingball and she was fine with that, as we weren't in anyone's way. Pitches quite spacious, and didn't seem to be too crowded in,
We were pitched under the trees, which was a little difficult when getting tent pegs in, but lovely in the evening sun. You don't get sun therefore in morning, so if you need to pack up early you may still have dew on the tent. I left it till last minute and was fine.
A great site for touring the area, everything seems within 45 minutes drive maximum. Small site, therefore no play area possible, but recreation ground just down road. We will definitely return. Excellent value.

My teenage son and I stayed here with a tent for 3 nights. Very welcoming and friendly owners. Note the site is next to a railway line, so you have to expect some noise from the trains although they did not seem to bother us at night.
You are not allowed to park the car beside the tent on the camping area, only a minor inconvenience to save the grass from becoming cut up by the tyres.
The grass is kept short and they collect the grass cuttings so you don't end up trailing grass in to the tent in the morning when the grass is wet from the dew.
There are plenty of picnic tables around the site, so if you only have a small tent or are back packing then assuming its fine you have somewhere to sit and eat.
There seemed to be quite a few electric hook ups, although we didn't use one for tents as well as caravans. There is a pipe which runs across the camping area at around head height for some of its distance which you need to be careful of at night when going to the toilet block.
The toilet block is good, kept very clean with plenty of hot water and free hot showers, and piped BBC Radio 2! A minor point the gents (can't comment about the ladies) could do with some coat hooks; there is nowhere to hang your clothes when using the wash basins. There is also free hot water for washing up and a complimentary bottle of washing up liquid by the sink.
There were two D of E school groups camping next to us for the last night, but they were no problem and the site was quiet at night. Being a fairly small site there is nowhere on site for children to play, but there is a proper playground just a short 200m walk away.
The site is well placed for the Derwent valley reservoirs, with walks and cycle rides from the site. Castleton with more walks and the caverns is only a few minutes drive away. There is a 24hr shop at the garage on the main road and also a small general store about half a mile up the road in to Bamford.
All in all a very pleasant site, and we enjoyed our brief stay.

Booked into this site for the Easter weekend and it was full!
The owners are lovely and really accommodating, they have done loads in the short space of time that they've owned the site. The shower/wash blocks are really nice and clean (with piped Radio 2!). There are loads of caravan pitches which seem to be statics and quite a few were empty. The tent area was nice (albeit a bit uneven) and the atmosphere was really friendly. They have provided picnic benches on the site and alongside the river.
We used the site as a base to explore Bakewell (12 miles) and to cycle around Ladybower/Derwent lakes (3 miles up an old railtrack to get there) and it was excellent.
There is a petrol station/24hr shop 5-10mins walk, and a pub in Bamford (~25mins). There isn't a kids play area on site, but there is a recreation ground with tennis and a lovely play area about 200yds up the road.
We will be using the site again with friends later on this season!
Points to note:-
- Cash/Cheque only (not really an issue)
- Hot water in the shower block was intermittent, but the owners were really obliging and sorted it out (not really an issue)
- Train track next to site - infrequent train during the night but didn't really notice it (again not really an issue)
- Pipe running across the site (could be an issue in the dark if you are tall!)

Stayed at this site for three nights after Easter.
The site is very clean neat and tidy. The toilet block/washing facilities are clean enough to eat in, plenty of hot water, showers take a few seconds to warm up.
The proprietors are very welcoming and available for enquiries from early morning to evening, they are also extremely helpful with advice on places to visit, eat and drink.
The nearby convenience store is just that, there is another local shop in Hathersage on the B6001 which has a varied and in my opinion better range of goods.
The only drawback as several people have mentioned is the railway and the nearby road, we found that putting cotton wool in our ears gave us a good nights sleep.
Would have no hesitation recommending this site, especially if the absence of children is a factor.
With the proposed alterations the site can only get even better

Wardens on the site are very friendly and have a nice site, excellent toilet and shower facilities but not ideal for children as they cannot play ball games or ride bikes.
The train line is very close which didn't bother us in the daytime but did at night, very loud.
Wouldn't visit again mainly due as no area for kids to play.

We visited the site on the 4th of September, we were made very welcome they gave us a choice of a few pitches for the tent. The railway line was not a problem and the toilets and shower blocks was immaculate and were always kept very clean. The site was nice and quite and everyone on the site was very friendly. It is not far into bamford and the local shop had everything you need if you run short of anything. All in all very well run site and clean. We would definitely go back again.

Very friendly and helpful owners, despite a very late booking for a high season weekend. Also welcomed by a very fluffy ginger and white cat - perhaps one of the reasons why dogs are not permitted at the site.
Toilet blocks are very well designed, and kept very clean. There are squidgy devices for campers to push water away from showers after use. Plenty of hot water in all showers and sinks whenever we tried.
Only problem we encountered was with noise from neighbouring tents - one man who spoke loudly on phone to his wife, way past midnight to tell her about his tent mate's snoring; and children who started shouting at 0715, then kicking football around while their mother packed up tent, and while 2 neighbouring tent occupants were cooking breakfast - not too unexpected or unreasonable, having given up on trying to sleep by 0800. Ear plugs kept out train and road noise, but not voices.
For children (and to prevent danger to others when cooking), there is an excellent play area and playing fields just a few hundred metres away - we walked past it on the way back from Thornhill. A public footpath goes through the campsite towards the river bank under the railway line excellent walking country.
