Lovely site, not much space for tents as touring caravans covered most of the site. Very quiet for a week in July with hardly any of the caravans occupied and only a handful of tents. Price was a little higher than we usually pay for a camping pitch.
Owners very friendly and helpful.
The noise from the trains didn't really bother us too much, and didn't disturb our sleep
Toilet block was the best I've seen on a campsite. Extremely clean and well kept. I think it was being cleaned 2/3 times a day. The only issue I had was that the showers didn't stay on for very long.
Facilities to the site were good. Nice clean washing up room and lots of local information and leaflets in the reception area.
The petrol station next door came in handy but as Sheffield was only 20 minutes drive we found a tesco for the majority of shopping we did.
Great base for exploring the peak district, we visited the cavers, Chatsworth house and Lyme park, also went for a drive around the reservoirs and loved finding out about the Derwent village that used to sit along the side of the reservoir.
Would certainly use the site again, if only for the toilet block!

We visited this site for the weekend. It is mainly for caravans but there were about a dozen tents. The owners were friendly and the toilets, shower and washing facilities are new and very clean.
When I telephoned to book I was asked about the size of our tent, after checking the size I emailed the campsite with the details including the size of our canopy - our pitch was small and we didn't have room for the canopy which with a rainy weekend was a bit inconvenient. The tents were packed in and I think there were far to many tents in a small area.
The main Sheffield to Manchester railway line runs right by the site, there are several trains an hour which although this disturbed the peace it was bearable during the day and there are a couple of trains during the night which did wake me up. There was a bit of noise from the nearby road during the night too.
The village of Bamford is about 3/4 of mile away where there are 2 pubs and another further out. There is a bakery and convenience store in the village and in the other direction is a Petrol Station which we went to selling bread, milk etc.
There isn't a playground on the site but there is a nice park and recreation ground about 5 minutes away for the children.
I think the owners are going in the right direction with this site by the improvements they are making but I don't think I would visit again because of the noise of the trains and the road.

The owners took over this site in December 2009. In over 50 years of camping they are certainly up with the best in terms of friendliness and helpfulness. They are spending a lot of money upgrading the site, including the entrance, water points and, particularly, the shower facilities which are amongst the best we've seen, even on the Continent. They were spotless, being cleaned 3 times a day.
The site is ideally placed for visiting key tourist spots in Derbyshire. There's nothing for children to do and a 'no ball games' rule - but this seemed to be ignored and no one was bothered about the children playing.
THE big drawback is the railway which runs right next to the campsite. During the day it's not really a problem but sleep can be disturbed at night. The two-coach commuter trains aren't too bad as they rush past in about 10 seconds and finish running around 11pm. However, the heavy goods-carrying trains are over 30 cars long and rumble past in about 30 seconds or so. If there's one at 0100hrs and another at 0400hrs you're sleep is pretty much broken. Especially if the occasional service locomotive flashes by in between. I guess if you've had a good few drinks or are a very heavy sleeper you may not hear them but, otherwise, expect broken sleep.
We'll use the site again and hope the owners are successful - but it would only be for a weekend. I wouldn't want to spend another full week of broken sleep.

This is a nice friendly campsite and the owner made us feel very welcome. Though there isn't much space for tents, there were 4 tents on the site and some space for a few more, but I wouldn't advise coming here with a big tent at a busy time. I found the table and chairs useful and loved sitting by the stream at night with candlelight.
The toilets and showers are very clean, they were cleaned twice or more daily and the site wasn't busy so they weren't getting dirty. The showers are warm and in separable cubicles but don't keep clothing on the floor. The only thing I found slightly annoying was that the shower would go off after 20seconds or so and then you would have to press the button again.
The petrol store on the main road is very useful, fairly priced and has most essentials. The village store is quite a walk in the heat so we were delighted to find this. The local bus services are quite good, usually hourly but they do arrive on time which is a step up from my local ones! Obviously a must visit would be Castleton, great town, we went to speedwell caverns which was enjoyable, slightly overpriced and not very well lit but still interesting, I wouldn't advise going to more than 2 caverns though.
Also Hathersage, Elliot's cafe has beautiful cake =D And David Mellor's cutlery Museum was a nice surprise and sold lovely home made lemonade
Also as this seemed like it would be an issue when I first read some reviews I think I should make a comment that the trains are not as bad as you would think, not once did they disturb my sleep
To conclude, great site, good value and we would definitely consider coming again

This is a small campsite, predominantly populated by caravans. There is a relatively small area for tents. It was a busy weekend, and we were encouraged to pitch our tents as closely as possible to one another; so much so that our new neighbours crossed guy ropes with us. There's no room for cars next to tents; they are parked away near to the entrance, although you can get the car close for pitching/packing.
Washing facilities are new and good; plenty of hot water and good showers. Bizarrely, the water drains away from the shower into the changing area, so watch out for anything left on the floor. Radio 2 piped at all hours in the wash block.
Bamford is a small village with a general store and grocery. The local pub - The Angler's Rest - serves good beer and good value pub food. The steak and ale pie and sirloin steak were both well above general pub fare. There's also a convenience store just round the corner at the petrol station on the main road.
The railway line running just next to the campsite is a tad noisy, but not enough to disturb my sleep, and you get a similar level of noise from the road, with lorries coming and going from the route over the Snake Pass.
The guy in charge was very friendly and helpful.
Overall; OK. Top location to discover the High Peak, but we'll be looking at other sites when we return to the area.

Stayed here around Easter time this year for three nights camping with E/H. The weather was pretty bad and the site was fairly muddy-though the owners were extremely helpful and very friendly.
The facilities were of a high standard, plenty of hot water in the showers (though my partners were cold one morning). The toilet/shower block was always kept remarkably clean considering all the mud and grass from the bad weather.
The wash up area was modern and well lit-though we experienced a shortage of hot water-nothing that a pre-boiled pan of water didn't solve.
Many have complained about the trains being an issue, neither my partner nor I felt they disturbed our sleep at all. Perhaps don't book a campsite next to a railway line if you are a light sleeper?
We didn't venture much into the village, though the little shop at the petrol station was well stocked and suited for our needs.
There was plenty to see and do in the surrounding area. There is a station less than a five minute walk away from the site with regular trains to Sheffield.
Would have no objection in staying here again in the future.

Newly taken over. The owners were very helpful. They have put a lot of hard work into the site since taking it over in December. I enjoyed hearing the trains.
It was waterlogged when we were there at Easter, but that was because of the excessive rain we had had. The owner did offer to toe us off if we got stuck.
The only blight is the 2' Diameter pipe that runs straight through the middle of the site and the frontage of the site needs to be tidier if you want to attract punters straight off the main road.

We recently stayed at Swallowholme for the Easter weekend. As per previous reviews this is a small and basic site but that isn't always a bad thing. The owners were really nice and asked if we needed any help. The shower and toilet block is new and it is a credit to the owners as the shower was absolutely fantastic! They were nice individual cubicles with good drainage and a dry area for hanging your clothes. My only small criticism was that the shower would have been a bit too hot for my 2 year old but we were only there for one night so it was OK; this might also be because the site was quiet the water might have been hotter than normal.
It was a VERY wet weekend but the grass faired very well. It was obvious that a lot of work was being put into this site as the owners only took it on in December 2009. There is a train line that runs alongside which is a busy line and does go through the night. It wasn't unbearable but could annoy some people. This a good base site for the Peak District with a great pub (Anglers Rest) just up in the nearby village (Bamford) which was really nice and great with kids. Would definitely visit again and we wish the owners all the best.

This is a brilliant site and the owners are very helpful and friendly. Very clean toilets and showers. Close enough to walk to the garden centre, and Bamford is a very nice village. After the first night you get used to the trains, in fact you do not realize they are there. There is a bus service just outside the site, and the train station is just across the road

A lovely site with good sanitary and washing facilities. The reception was great and entirely helpful, and the regulars,(who make up most of the site) were friendly.
There is a walkable pub with food, and some adequate shopping in the village. There are some excellent walks from the site, e.G. To Hathersage along the river and back via the golf course (but see OS map).
There is noise from the road and the railway, and we got bitten to bits! Serves us right for not taking stuff.
There is a lot of North Derbyshire. Visit!
We will certainly hope to return.
