This was our first visit to Norfolk as we are normally Cornwall visitors through and through, but to be fair Norfolk is very picturesque but just hasn't got the wild coastline for me, any way back to the site,

We booked this on the afternoon before the day of travel as keeping an eye on the weather, wasn't sure about the site, something about the website had me thinking the site was more toward holiday homes and not tourers, but that was obviously me as it couldn't have been further from the truth. The Receptionist was very friendly polite and couldn't have been more pleased to see us, giving us our sort of welcome pack with info on the site etc.

The Reception is sited at the 'Village Square', this seems to be the hub of the park with a spa centre, free outdoor pool, shop, bar restaurant and other facilities set around it, it really is a lovely place and at night time entertainment is put on in the bandstand which adds even more to the atmosphere, there is also an act playing in a lounge at the back of the restaurant, again adding to the experience.

To the pitch

The pitch was level neat and more than big enough for our Monty even with the car parked at the side,

We were sectioned off from our neighbours via hedging but a lot of the pitches are all open but still spaced well apart, the pitches are surrounded by lovely trees and bushes of all kinds, along with wildlife such as rabbits, stoats and Jays paying visits.

The toilet shower and washing up block were always clean and although we were only there for 2 nights we never had to queue, my only slight criticism would be that the hot water for washing pots could have been a few degrees warmer, but that is just nit picking.

The peace was only shattered by a group of families kids, they were not misbehaving just 4-8 year olds having a good time running round screaming, although I do think the parents could have kept them quiet and under canvas before 7am.

The whole site is great it, even as you enter from the road you can tell its going to be a smashing place, clean, tidy, well ran with lovely fellow visitors as well as staff, you wouldn't actually have to leave the site to find something to do, I would have no hesitation in recommending this site to any one and although its not our beloved StIves we will definitely be returning.

What a great place to stay ! We love Kelling Heath as it is fairly local to us and it is set in the most amazing scenery. With different types of pitches available, all with hook up this site appeals to young families and the not so young ! Toilets and showers are good although some areas of the site are served by older type blocks which are kept very clean. There is a leisure centre which we felt was a little expensive, several restaurants and bars and a shop which sells just about everything and prices are about convenience store prices. At weekends entertainment is provided both indoors and outside in the village square, which if the weather is kind is a great place to be. The nice thing is you can take your own drinks to the square to keep the expense down. You will also find there petanque pitches and table tennis tables.

Whilst we were there some individual decided to hold his own alcohol fuelled disco with ultra loud music and very quickly security stopped this and the whole family were asked to leave ! Despite being very full we heard very little noise after 11. 00pm. We found all the staff in every area of the site very pleasant, helpful and courteous.

Pitches are in three areas, one of which is the dedicated dog area, the other areas being dog free. Pitches are well spaced out and some very large ones are available.

With a large playing field, adventure area for children and its own railway station there is a lot to do here. Plenty of different trails to follow, an abundance of wildlife, and dark skies if you want to see the stars ! If you do go. Take a torch !

We would not normally opt for such a large a site but it suited our needs on this occasion. We were very pleasantly surprised by how good this site was. Arriving late due to traffic congestion en-route caused no problem and we were able to pick up our pitch details from the bar.

The 'Red Squirrel' pitch was spacious, flat and fully serviced. The camping area was large and well laid out. The toilets and showers were all clean and warm throughout the bank holiday weekend. We really liked the village centre at Kelling Heath and the amenities on offer there. The shop in particular was well stocked and we thought, fairly priced. Staff were efficient and courteous at all times. Night times were quiet on the pitches and seemed to be well managed by the wardens. The night sky was amazing, highlighted by the lack of light pollution on the site (take a torch)

It was a real treat to be able to catch the steam train from the site's platform into Sherringham but prices were hiked unreasonably due to the 'Thomas Special Weekend' Tickets normally available at reception were not available due to this and that made it impossible to budget for the cost until actually on the train. We thought this was particularly unfair to families with excited children who's options were limited, or very costly, once the train had started to move. It has to be said that this was no fault of Kelling Heath or to the volunteers who man the railway but of the organisation who promote the 'Thomas' brand. At the end of the line, Sherringham had plenty to see and do and the beach was lovely.

The surrounding area is wonderful with quaint villages and small harbours dotted along the coast. The coastal areas abound with birdlife and Blakeney has boat trips to watch the seals. There are some great places to fish for crabs at Blakeney too.

We would certainly use this site again and more than likely will do.

Date of Visit: April 2014 Unit:  Trailer Tent
Reviewer: Markinapub 1 review from this member

The last time I went camping was a rather aborted affair – Skegness, May 2004, and a torrid experience all round, with torrential rain and gusting gales all but destroying our tent. Tempers frayed, we abandoned the experience, shoved the children in the back of the car - along with said broken tent - slammed the boot lid shut and watched as the suspension on the rear of the car went ‘pop’.

It has taken my wife ten years to persuade me to return to camping but a rather impetuous purchase of a trailer tent on eBay has seen us sleeping back under canvas once again, with Kelling Heath our first destination to try out our new purchase.

And what a great experience it has been. Early April weather was never going to be in our favour but there was no rain, some sun and, keeping my nerves on edge, probably a bit too much wind. But Kelling Heath is a revelation in camping.

It’s a more ‘premium’ campsite, set on the Norfolk coastline near Holt and Weybourne, amidst beautiful wood- and heathland with plenty of trails to appreciate walkers and cyclists.

Camping facilities are designated in to three large, well serviced areas, although some of the pitches are a little open to the elements; set in this area, expect winds from the coast to gust occasionally and guy your tent/awning out well!

Some pitches are set amongst trees or near bushes and some are more enclosed but you can choose from three types of pitch: Serviced, Serviced Premium or Fully Serviced Premium. All come with electric hook-up included in the price; Serviced Premium is a guaranteed pitch size of a minimum 100sq meters; Fully Serviced Premium pitches are as Serviced Premium but also include a dedicated water, waste and TV Connection for each pitch.

The site is open for much of the year, with prices for touring pitches starting from £18. 95 per night but, if camping’s not your style, there are plenty of static luxury holiday homes or woodland lodges to rent, too.

On-site facilities are excellent as well. The washing, laundry and toilet facilities are exemplary; well-lit at night, modern, very clean and warm, even on the chilliest April evening.

The Village Square is the hub of all your needs, with a modern reception area, well-stocked shop, three table-tennis tables, a petanque terrain, plenty of tables to sit at to enjoy the sun with a warm or cold drink, and a breeding area for red squirrels provides young and old with delightful views of these rare creatures.

Brackens Café and Pizzeria is just off the village square, offering takeaway pizzas, burgers, fish & chips, and a warm conservatory to enjoy a coffee in. The Forge & Terrace bar and restaurant area offers sit-down meals, although this is quite upmarket for a ‘camping’ holiday; we were asked if we had booked (we hadn’t, and for a second it looked as if this might be a problem) and a meal for a family of four with drinks set us back the thick end of £80 on our first night. Drink prices at the bar, however, are reminiscent of a city centre establishment and pretty standard for an on-site pub.

WiFi is also freely available in the restaurant and bar areas, although if you’re lucky enough to get a decent data signal on your mobile phone I recommend you use that – at the time of our visit WiFi was notoriously difficult to make a connection with and pitifully slow once we did, regardless of make and model of device.

Every member of staff we dealt with was polite and friendly, eager to help us with any enquiry we had.

If I were to pick fault anywhere it’s with the cost of the health & fitness club, which offers pool, sauna, spa and gym facilities but is price-prohibitive for most touring guests. I don’t mind paying to use facilities but, when they are exclusively available only on site, a family of four wanting to use the indoor swimming pool would have to buy a day pass at a cost of £33, and that’s too much. Guests in Woodland Lodge accommodation get access for free.

There is an outdoor pool available separately from the end of May to the end of August, tennis courts and an ‘eco gym’: for walkers, the Trim Trail is littered with outdoor exercises!

Out and about you’ll find the beautiful coastline, pretty local villages and towns and great local pubs, plus Kelling Heath has its own stop on the North Norfolk Railway, which runs a steam engine or diesel service throughout the holiday season from Sheringham to Holt. Either buy a Rover Ticket (family of four, £34 from reception) or simply sit by the side of track and watch yesteryear steam on by.

All-in-all, Kelling Heath is an excellent (if perhaps slightly highly priced) place for a short stay or a full family holiday and we’ve already booked again for another weekend trip. (Discounts are available for repeat visitors…)

Kelling Heath is a quality site in heathland setting. Obviously a big busy family orientated site in the busier periods but great at this quieter time of year.

Particularly liked the Forge restaurant with 3 course meal for £26 - pheasant when we were there; leisure club was very enjoyable (extra cost), very relaxing with no more than half a dozen people using the pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. Adults only after 6pm. Very good shop with local products section

Very friendly staff in all parts. Red squirrel breeding programme. Has its own rail halt on the Poppy Line, Good location for car, cycling and walking. Dark skies provide impressive view but take a torch!

Discount of 20% on breaks later in the year if you have a 2 night stay

Not for us at peak times but lovely at this time of a year

Took a break during the Feb half term holiday as this site is really popular and quite difficult to book up during the main Summer Holiday Period.

Selected a Premium Pitch on Yellow Dragonfly Field. Pitch is a great size, with hook up, TV connection, drinking water and waste outlet. Chose not to put up awning as pitch was muddy and had quite a few potholes filled with gravel.

Touring site not busy as it was Feb so only 1 toilet block open. This only had half facilities open to save on cleaning but never had to queue for showers. Judging by the number of pitches, this site looks like it could get very busy indeed!

£60 for 2 adult and 2 child leisure passes. Being half term pool was busy in day time but quieter towards evening. Watch out, all children have to leave pool by 18. 00 so don't leave it too late in the day! Gym was spacious, well equipped and well maintained unlike many other holiday parks.

Pub/Restaurant menu was limited with many items already sold out which was really disappointing. Half term week must have come as a surprise to the Catering team!

Reception staff were very friendly and gave warm welcome and sound information about the local area.

Ideal base for visiting the coastal towns of Cromer, Weybourne and Sheringham. We were very lucky with the weather. Try Funky Mackerel Café in Sheringham for a huge flapjack!

All in all, enjoyed the break away and visiting the local area. Certainly pleased to have visited Kelling Heath at a quiet time though.

Stayed for a weekend early September 2013 - had won the 'Name the Red Squirrel Babies' competition and had vouchers to spend in 2013.

We stayed on Yellow Dragonfly this time round - the first time we stayed we were on Blue Butterfly - facilities were great and our neighbours were friendly.

Had fun setting up as arrived late Friday night (Hull is a bit of a trek away) managed ok in the dark though - the remark OH heard from one of our neighbours was 'OMG they have just put their tent up in the dark'

The site is great for Dark Skies visiting - my son spent many a trek to the toilet block weaving as he was watching the stars instead of the path.

Staff were courteous, polite and very friendly, the restaurant serves gorgeous food, the drinks went down very well as well.

Prices are what I was expecting - you get what you pay for.

Have previously done the Bat Walk on a night and have hired bikes and done the cycle route - having bought the book of routes from reception. This time round we did one of the walks and also did the Scavenger Hunt. This was one of the highlights of the weekend as OH and Son found themselves a dead adder and insisted we took it back as evidence - they got themselves an extra prize for that.

The Red Squirrels are amazing - not that I am biased (as we won) - the breeding programme is amazing and it is great to be able to show my 9 year old animals that we don't normally get to see.

I could go on and on but I won't - as someone that goes basic camping with my Scout Group this site is exceptional (I wonder if they would let me bring my group)- this site offers different camping experiences not offered by many other sites.

Will we return - YES! - just wish Hull was closer!

I have recently camped at Kelling Heath and think it is a great site with a few minor problems. First of all it is in Norfolk which although it is a pretty part of the country it is quite isolated and the nearest place of civilisation is Norwich. The site's facilities were kept amazingly clean and the grounds were maintained brilliantly. I would've given the facilities a 10 out of 10 if it hadn't been for one minor issue that was whenever they were cleaning the restrooms you weren't allowed to go in them and on one occasion we came back from swimming wanting a shower and they wouldn't let us. They were very polite and said they would be done in about 10 minutes but even so they us in to the disabled shower. The customer service was very professional although other employees were better than others. We went out for a meal at the bar twice and the second time we did not enjoy our meal. Firstly people that came after us got served before us people who asked for the bill after us got there bill before us. When we complained the waitress that hade made the excuse that they were busy and she was doing things as best she could. Apart from that incident service was great and we had no other issues. We do not have a dog but if you did you might want to reconsider coming to Kelling Heath as the facilities in red block are not as good as the other blocks, there is a chance that you may feel like second class. The staff have attended our every need and if you consult the office the staff are not at all strict about where you put your tent/caravan/motorhome and are happy to help if you need it. The adventure playground was amazing and the children in the family loved it the assault course was great too and fun for all the family. On site bike hire is a great and convenient idea its not too expensive and the workers are friendly and helpful, the bikes were all in a good standard and by a well known make. The railway is another convenient and fun thing to do on a day. I feel that Kelling Heath is a lovely site with a nice atmosphere and I hope other people enjoy it as much as I did!

A weekend stay that went really well. Not quite top marks as the busy nature of the site means there have to be quite strict rules. Can't say it spoiled our stay but other sites are a little more relaxed and more Customer focused. Great rural location and the facilities are good. As a place to relax this is good. Pitch size is good although in some areas you could feel a little claustrophobic. The toilets and shower areas were very good and clean. Staff can be a little curt but you can't be overtly friendly with thousands of campers. Well worth a family break as there's plenty to explore and time to relax here.

We've just returned from a 4 day break at Kelling Heath. (2 families both consisting of 2 kids each and 2 adults)

Good points - easy to find, friendly staff on reception, nice large plot, plenty of open spaces for the kids to run around, beautiful surroundings, woods and heather fields. Lovely swimming pool, bars, restaurant on site. Clean toilets. Plenty of hot water for showers - any time of day/night.

Bad Points - there isn't really any - apart from at night there is NO lighting - its very, very dark - I would suggest to them to use a small maybe solar lights on walk ways to the toilet/shower blocks - as on a few occasional night trips - I met a couple of loose dogs & I believe to be a muntjac deer - which is a bit scary when all you see are their eyes lit up by your torch!

There is also the Norfolk railway which runs partly through the site - so be warned of early mornings if you ever get lucky enough to think you will get a lie in! - it wont happen here!

We do plan to return next year with more walks and catching the train for a ride along the coast.
