This is a lovely small site just 3 miles from the A5, but in the countryside, so very quiet & peaceful.
Directions: If coming from the North, come off the A5 for Montgomery turnoff, then approx. 1. 5 miles along road watch out for Cartref caravan sign on right hand side of road, a further 1. 5 miles another caravan sign (does not say Cartref) as they are only allowed one sign which is named, again on right hand side of road, turn left here and the caravan park just on the left.
Site: A warm welcome to greet us, we were shown to our pitch which we booked in the adults only part, I think this field has 12 pitches. Our pitch was very big, on gravel with a small grass section to either side & back, and hedged off from the next pitch, which we like as you then have your own space. I hate pitches where you don't know where yours ends and the next starts. There was loads of room for our caravan, porch awning and car with room to spare. Not all pitches in this field are as big, you are asked at the time of booking size of van & if you will be putting an awning up. The pitches are set around the edge of the field with a wild flower section in the middle and seating. There is also 3 car parking spots in the field. I did notice people from the other field coming for their car but this did not intrude on us. Please bear in mind you either have to pay by cash or cheque as they do not have a swipe card machine. There was no rush for us to pay, we got set up and went to pay the following morning when we found out about types of payment, and I paid by cheque but was advised if I wanted to pay by cash there was no rush, just when we got to the cash point.
We really enjoyed the site, showers were warm, not boiling and no control over the heat setting. I never had to wait all the time I was there. The shower is a push button type and went off after about 12 seconds.
Out & about: Once out of the site you are not too far from the Park & Ride, about 3 miles, and if you have a OAP bus pass it's 80p each return to Shrewsbury. There is a Co-op to the front of the Park & Ride which is handy. We visited Shrewsbury, Chirk & Powis Castles (both NT) the garden at Powis is lovely. Hawkstone Park Follies is a great day out but you need to be reasonably fit as a lot of walking and climbing steps. Please note if you are a member of the Caravan Club you can get into Hawkstone Park Follies by giving them a Days Out Voucher and showing your caravan membership card. We got a discount 2 for the price of 1, £7. 25 for the 2 of us, otherwise concessionary rate was £6 + each. Take a picnic and have it in the grounds. We also went to Llangellon Canal & Aqueduct, so a nice place to base yourself to get about.
We plan to go back to this site at some point as there is things we still want to see & do in the area.
A lovely site, and quiet, what more can you ask for.

Great little site. When we arrived we were offered any pitch we liked, as it had rained a lot, the owner suggested a particular pitch which was a good choice.
The site is small and has an adult only area. There are lots of planters, seats etc. Making it quite pretty. There is also a big dog walking field (dogs kept on lead) and a small playing area for children - not great but adequate and there's loads of room for ball games etc.
The shower blocks are kept in pristine condition and has 3 showers in each. The water was always hot and plentiful. There are 2 dishwashing areas - which turned out to be fun - as I'm quite short I couldn't keep the light on, so OH had to wave his arms whilst drying up - we did move the light slightly and returned it back to its' natural place. Next to the wash area there is a hut that houses local information.
The owners are very friendly and helpful with a good knowledge of the local area.
The area is great, lots to see and do and never having to travel too far. There's Shrewsbury and all the smaller towns and villages for shopping, but also there's great walking and beautiful scenery in the Shropshire hills.
The site is so good, going back in September!

We stayed at this site for 4 nights and found it to be a very good location to tour Shropshire and north wales. The site toilet blocks etc were spotless. We couldn't find any constructive criticism, the owner was very helpful when we first arrived and helped to site our van. One piece of warning, when turning off the main road coming from Shrewsbury watch out for the camping sign, it can be missed.
All told this was a very quiet site with good facilities.

What a wonderful site this is! We stayed here for 3 nights in early August with our 2 children (age 5 & 2). When we arrived I went to check in and found the owner to be very friendly, he showed us to our pitch and even helped un-hitch our caravan and made sure we were happy. We had a half hardstanding half grass pitch, which we liked and there were small hedges separating each pitch, which gave a nice bit of privacy without feeling too closed off.
The toilet/shower block was always clean and quiet too, never had to queue for the shower. There was an adult only section to the campsite as well as the family friendly section, a separate field was available for the children to play on with some swings a see-saw a few tyres to climb on and a small football pitch set up. It was great for the children to run around, although with young children we had to go with them as we couldn't see them from the caravan.
There was an information hut containing all sorts of leaflets and folders with things to do and places to go, although when we were unsure the owners were more than helpful finding somewhere for us to go. We visited Park Hall Farm as the owners had some discount vouchers available and it was a great day out. There was a petrol station with an extensive shop just down the road if you needed anything. All in all we really liked this site and will be going back.

This was our second visit to Cartref Camping & Caravan site, our first visit being in August 2008. The owners acquired the site three years earlier; they had made some wonderful improvements including flower beds and had planted lots of shrubs and privet hedging as well as building a new facilities block, including an undercover pot wash.
We returned this August and was delighted to see just how well the site had matured, the flower beds were full to overflowing and the private hedging had now grown too give the pitches a high degree privacy. The pitches are of good size with plenty of room without feeling cramped, the facilities block was as good as the day it had been built, maintained and cleaned to a very high standard, even although the site was almost full we never had to wait of a shower.
The owners had added an adult only area consisting of eleven hard standing pitches, so the site now has a total of forty six pitches, but it never felt crowded as the site was well laid out with plenty of space.
The children had a separate field to play in so they could enjoy their game of football without interfering with the campers.
The site was fairly well full most of the time, this I believe to be down to the dedication and hard work of Pat and Alan, always tending the site from early morning to late at night, also the pitch fees are very inexpensive for such a wonderful site. The owners were always available to give help and advice, about what not to miss in the local area during your stay.
There is much to do and many places to visit within easy driving distance, although this being our second visit, we still did not manage to visit all the places on our list.
We are campers of many years experience; I would rank this site very highly on my list sites that I much visit again.
Do keep up the good work.

I'll start with the positives. Everything! We stayed here for 3 nights to attend the Shrewsbury Flower show. Was greeted at the gate in the evening by the owner a very congenial man who guided us to our pitch and watched/guided me in reverse into the pitch. He then explained all site facilities and locations.
First impressions are vital and this site is immaculate. The grass is mown and edged and boarders are landscaped. Most of the pitches are private, we stopped on No. 8. All areas of the site are well kept.
The toilet block is the jewel in the crown. They are very new with flowers and plants in the gents let alone the ladies. Showers are plentiful and hot on a push button system.
A board is put out at the entrance every day letting you know local news such as traffic delays or in our case Flower Show information.
The Oxon Park and Ride is easy to get to about 10 minutes up the road with a large co op store, chippy and Chinese takeaway alongside.
We liked it so much we managed to get the last pitch to return over the August Bank holiday to visit the Shrewsbury Steam fair another excellent local event.
So for £15 a night it was excellent value for money and would of been happy more!
If I could put 100 out of 10 I would.

Wow! what a gem, stayed overnight enroute to anglesey, arrived about 8pm and was greeted by a most charming owner who showed us to our pitch, and then told us where everything was even stating that if you need any help just give me a shout. This is one of the best sites we have ever stayed on, toilets and showers are first class along with the spotless grounds. I highly recommend this site to anyone looking for a top class site in the shrewsbury area. Also many thanks to the owner for fitting us in at such short notice.

We have just spent 6 sun baked days at this fabulous campsite.
We were welcomed by the owner who showed us to our pitch, he explained where things were and said 'give me a shout if you need anything'
Our pitch (27) was spacious, flat and had a pleasant outlook.
The showers are spotless and cleaned at least 3 times a day, no queues and always hot water.
There is a information shed that Alan put the days weather forecast on for those without TV or radio.
The gardens and grounds are well maintained and
You can see a lot of time, care and money has been spent on this site, with more improvements to come. Its such a quiet, relaxing place, everyone waves or passes the time of day with you, it has a happy atmosphere.
Both the owners often did a little walk about chatting with the campers and would say ' give us a shout if you need anything'
Well, day 3 into our holiday we did need to 'give them a shout', we had car trouble and Alan put us in touch with a garage to sort the car out, but this would take a while, so the exceptionally kind lady that she is handed us the keys to her car and said ' its yours to use while you need it'
I was extremely touched by this act of kindness and don't mind saying I had a tear or two, our holiday would not be ruined after all.
We were very grateful.
When did you last hear of owners doing that?
I cannot recommend this site highly enough, if only more campsites had this level of customer service and such helpful owners/wardens.
100/10 and highly deserved.

What a fantastic find! The owners are really helpful, the pitches all have electrical hook ups and hard standings, the site is immaculately kept and the shower and toilet facilities are the cleanest and best we've experienced! There is an adults only section which is a nice touch if you want peace and quiet. The site is set in lovely countryside. All in all we would highly recommend this site and have booked to go back again!

This is the second time we have stayed here this year.
The site is an absolute gem. Pitches can be either hard standing or grass but all are excellent.
The site is well laid out with little hedges between each pitch and central gardens in both the family and adult sections.
Alan seems to always assist in unhitching and ensuring everything is ok, along with a host of information about where to go or things to do.
Shower block is kept immaculate with free hot showers. The toilet disposal and waste water points are attached to the shower block and are excellent.
For £8. 50 per night for pitch and electric, awning and adjacent car parking and £3. 25 per person is exceptionally excellent value.
I would recommend this site to anyone whether with or without children.
