We've just spent a week at Newberry Valley and found the site to be in a very convenient location for Coombe Martin, being only a 5 minute walk into the centre of the village. Our pitch was spacious and reasonably near to the toilet/shower block, although some of the pitches where quite a distance away. The site was well maintained, the wardens spent a lot of time mowing and strimming; however on the first day our car was caught by a stone flicked up by the strimmer.

We hung a washing line between our tent and the adjacent fence to dry our towels, but were told to remove it as the site has a no-washing line rule.

The site has a new toilet and shower block which contains separate shower rooms with toilet, rather than cubicles. We were surprised at the lack of cleanliness by our fellow campers, who left dirty floors, sinks and toilets. The facilities were thoroughly cleaned once a day, but would have benefited from more.

As mentioned in an earlier review, there is a pack of wolves nearby. This fact is highlighted in the site booklet as an attraction, however this does not allow for the fact that the wolves howl during the night and disrupt your sleep.

After perusing the reviews and website for this camp site we were anticipating a veritable camping paradise.

Situated in a pleasant valley location the site had a cramped feel to it and our allocated pitch was a narrow strip of grass next to the main access road - a thoroughfare with a constant stream of cars and bikes sailing past within a foot of the tent.

The amenities block was of industrial proportions. Although modern and well equipped it was heavily used and quickly became odorous with wet slimy shower room floors.

The volley of howls from the Wolf Centre next door was rather disconcerting, especially in the early hours of the morning.

We enjoyed though visiting Woolacombe beach and cycling the Tarka trail from Barnstaple to Bideford.

To sum up, modern amenities but a lack of space, over formal feel, rather run down local area and over priced pitches minimised the feel good factor for us here.

Just returned from our first visit to Newberry Valley. We were welcomed and shown to our pitch by a very friendly warden. We had a 'Super pitch' in the top field which was plenty big enough for our tent, car and gazebo. The pitches were very well maintained and nicely spaced.

The shower block and toilets (amenity block really) were quite a long walk from where we were pitched, but was well worth the walk. They were nice and clean and even provided a cloth, mop and bucket (which I thought was a very good idea)so that you could tidy up after yourself and most people seemed to do this. The showers were lovely and warm and there was even a bath for a small charge.

Reception contained a small shop within for daily needs, although the local Spar in Combe Martin was open quite late and there was a superstore not too far away in Ilfracombe.

We had a small dog and there were plenty of places to walk her, the dog walk area was very nice giving a lovely view of the site from the hillside. There was also a woodland walk.

The local beach (where dogs were permitted) was stoney but very nice and only a short walk from the campsite. Woolacombe beach which was a short drive away also provided a dog area (parking expensive) but a lovely sandy beach.

For me the best part of my stay was the peace and quiet, it was amazing, it was so nice to be surrounded by such wonderful scenery, pure tranquility. The sound of the wolves nearby was fantastic.

All staff were very friendly, helpful and welcoming. I would highly recommend this site to anyone who loves peace and quiet and a real friendly atmosphere. This is a site I will certainly be visiting again, a real gem, I loved it, wish we could've stayed longer.

Just returned from a 3 night break and can honestly say it was one of the best camp sites we've stayed on. We had a super pitch which was more than big enough and very sheltered. We are very fussy but the new shower block is the cleanest we have ever been in with each room having a shower, sink and loo and no need to take coins as inclusive in the pitch price. We never had to queue even at busy times. There were also plenty of sinks for washing up. The site has a strict noise curfew at 10. 30pm which suited us fine after a busy day boarding on the various beaches (Woolacombe 15 min drive and Croyde 30 min drive are excellent for boarding).

The fishing lake is well stocked and we were lucky enough to catch a few small ones - however we did see someone catch a 16lb carp. A short stroll and you are in Coombe Martin which is a quaint village with a few pubs and restaurants.

Overall a brilliant campsite if you want a quiet break - not for party animals! Its quite pricey but in our opinion worth it. Definitely recommended and we will return!

Visited this site for sixteen nights during July and August. Found it to be a very friendly site with all site going out of their way to help in any way.

A good site shop that would order bread from the local baker daily We had a large pitch that gave ample room. Washing facilities are the finest I have ever used both in the UK and Europe.

As an angler I found the campsite lake perfect for an evenings fishing.

The site manager keeps in touch via e-mail I will be back in 2012 looking forward to meeting old friends

Just returned from a brilliant week staying at Newberry Valley. The site has excellent facilities, we managed to get 2 adults, 2 children and pushchairs in each shower room. The showers are free and always warm and kept clean at all times. The washing up area is always spotless and indoors.

The pitches are well maintained and mowed after a tent leaves, if vacant for a day or 2 the pitches are mowed again before another tent is pitched.

We had a premier pitch which was very generous and well worth the extra money.

The wolf centre is based on the same site and hearing the wolves howl at night was amazing and something you just wouldn't experience at any other camp site I know of.

There is a warden on site at all times and the curfew is taken seriously.

All in all an excellent site within walking distance of Combe Martin. Will definitely be visiting again.

On arrival at the campsite we were quickly shown to our pitch by the friendly staff. We had a large pitch which was more than ample for a 6 man tent & car. Toilet block very clean & central with each shower room with a toilet, basin & loo as well as separate loos available, washing up, laudry etc. Very very pleased. Campsite is off a hill on way out of Combe Martin approx 1/2 a mile from the shops. Path opposite leads to coastal paths & beach. Campsite is in a valley with wonderful scenery and a forest walk. Our pitch had hookup & water which seemed to be the same for all pitches. All in all a very nicely kept site witch nice toilet block, shop & excellent location

We booked this site as it offered extra-large pitches which are described as 'premier and/or super' and that they are. We required a pitch that would accommodate our 8x8m Tent and trailer, so we opted for the super pitch, offering a 10x10m pitch with electric. This proved ample space.

We arrived at the site - pitches are ready for 12pm (vacate at 10am - I don't think these times are mentioned on their website) we were shown to our pitch which was at the far end of the site.

The toilet blocks - that's probably the wrong description. The amenity block.

With free amenities including individual toilet and washroom cubicles, shower, toilet and sink cubicles, and a bathroom with toilet facilities (£2 for 20 mins water). The dishwashing facility inside the amenity block consist of 5 sinks with ample hot water. There are 5 washing machines and 5 dryers (at a cost) including a fridge and free iron and board facilities. The block is situated in the middle of the site and were fantastically clean. The Wardens and Staff make an excellent effort in their cleaning and this shows throughout the whole of the site.

Our only gripe was the distance to the amenity block from where we were pitched, however, this is negligible compared to the quality and cleanliness of the amenity block. I know which I'd rather have! :O)

There is a fishing lake, beautifully kept and fenced off, stops straying children wandering into the lake area. The ducks were also a feature of our holiday, we kept the local bakery in business for the week!

The playground was 'well hidden' in a quiet and shaded area of the site. The shop is open 9-5 and provides the basics, milk, eggs, bread, papers etc.

The site is situated 800m from the beach therefore ideal for walking into the village and all the amenities, with a local Spar shop which sells everything!

I must recommend the 'Top Chip Shop' on the main Road opposite Combe Martin Church (you will need your car. Long walk)

Well Done Newberry Valley - looking forward to my next visit.

We have just returned from a 9 day break at this campsite. (we cant call it a holiday as didn't feel like one and we left a day early after having enough)

The positives about this site

The toilet block which includes free individual shower rooms, 1 bathroom which costs £2 for 20 mins running water to fill the bath, individual washrooms, laundry room and dishwashing area, nappy bin; were all in very good condition being newly built last year, but we do not go on hols for the condition of the toilets. Clean and tidy large pitches. Location to Combe Martin being only 5 mins by road or cut through opposite the site is convenient. Also good central location to visit surrounding area. Lots to do near by for children. Dinosaur and Wildlife Park, Watermouth Castle and Theme Park, Woolacoome Swimming centre, Tunnels Beaches and Aquarium, Zoo, lots of local beaches and rock pooling also all within short distance of Combe Martin.

Negatives

We arrived to a warden instructing us military style on where we had to put the caravan which was facing a road and hedge. Constant noise of the staff driving around the site on their buggys. From 9am we were unable to sleep due to either being woken by loud staff vehicles or mowing of the grass. When I say they cut the grass, cut the hedges, or were strimming constantly I really do mean it was one or the other form about 9am, even when your curtains were closed they would come near the caravan strimming, moving etc. We have a 8 month old child who would wake at 6 and go back to sleep at 9am, it was impossible for him or us to go back to sleep for longer than 30mins before being woken. There is no exercise area for your dog on site, just lead only walking areas. There is Newberry beach which allows dogs but it isnt very big or nice. We found one nice beach which allows Dogs- Instow near Bidiford. The area we did not feel was very dog friendly and Combe martin we found to be Run down.

This of course is just our opinion and we do prefer a more relaxed feel to a site, but its location is excellent. I suspect the constant gardening is to keep the park to a high standard and to maintain the pitches before the next arrivals- I would advise the owners to consider making the arrival time later and then the staff would not be rushing early in the morning to cut the grass and at least people can have a lie in on holiday.

Just returned from our second holiday to this campsite.

Positives: Superb location and setting. The site is well laid out, relaxing and quiet. We had a Premier pitch - which is more expensive but gives more space and as we have a large tent this works best for us.

The newly improved shower and toilet block is absolutely first class. UK campsites usually fail or fall down when it comes to the showers and toilets - not in this case and I wish that others would visit this site and see how it can be done.

The site is child friendly - all in all a great site and we are looking to return for a third time next year.

Negatives: Not many - we really like this site. Perhaps the playground could be updated/improved with a few extras but our children spent hours there so this is only a minor thing.

Summary: A great site in a superb setting with clean facilities which will be hard to beat!
