We, (my wife and I and our little dog), stayed here for four nights, taking advantage of the 'four nights for the price of three' offer.

The site is well laid out, roomy and very well looked after by the staff. My wife used the disabled toilet/shower room and said it was the best she had ever used.

I used the general toilet block and found it always very clean and well looked after, I couldn't fault it.

What we were most impressed with was the relaxed attitude towards things like where you pitched your caravan and especially no signs saying dogs on lead at all times, we hate that.

If there is a down side it would have to be the beach, at low tide it's just a large expanse of mud, but round high tide it's shingle and shells, lots of shells and quite pleasant to walk on.

The surrounding area is all you would want really with a lovely country park to the East and a largish town to the West with plenty of shops a garage and take aways etc.

Worth a special mention is the local pub, the Dog and Pheasant, we are not really drinkers but we do like to eat and the food is excellent, well worth a try, and as an added bonus it's within walking distance of the camp site, see the site map.

All in all a brilliant camp site, well tended and with friendly staff.

We stayed for 7 nights at the end of August and had a fab time. Everything was there that we could expect.

My niece (4 years old) loved it, we stayed in the field where the children's playground is so we could give her a little independence but at the same time keep an eye on her.

Everything on all the reviews previous I would agree with but I do have a negative.

We were badly bitten by mosquitoes. I ended up at the emergency doctor because my foot swelled and my bites blistered on the 2nd day.

I feel that if we were told about the mosquitoes on check in then we would have been prepared (especially because it seems that I am allergic to them). When visiting the chemist in West Mersea on our penultimate day she said we should have been warned about the mosquitoes because it is an annual problem. We wouldn't have sat outside in the evening knowing what we do now.

This is the place for you if you don't get bitten!

Because of the mosquitoes I do not think I will visit again!

Very friendly/helpful staff and well kept site. Only down side we arrived on friday evening and struggled to find electric hook up as pitches not marked out so free for all which could have really spoilt our stay here.

We would like see speed ramps added in the main driveway as people sped down to the reception especially those staying on the static caravan site horrified at the total ignornance, this is camp site with kids playing, on their bikes and walking to the shop on the next door site.

On a plus side great location for beach. Toilets/showers, dishwahing and general site were fab and very clean espcecially as site fully booked. I marked this down on child friendliness only due to vehicles speeding on to the site which other parents wouldn't be aware of so be a warned if they walk to the shop on cosways site!

An excellent little site. Stayed for a week in August and have only just left the place today. Superb for families and very well run.

Not a site to go to if you want all the facilities provided (club, pool etc), but if you are looking for a quiet place to stay, with plenty of room for the kids to run around this place will definitely fit the bill.

The site is not crowded and the owners are keen to not pack in as many tents and caravans as possible so as to make sure it's comfortable for those staying there.

The toilets and showers were always kept clean and I don't think we ever found it in anything other than clean and presentable condition. Will definitely be going again.

If the owners read this, thanks for a great holiday! Very impressed, a fantastic find!

I have just returned from a two night stay with a group of friends.

There were 8 adults and 5 kids in total but we had no problem pitching together.

Blessed with great weather the kids had great fun in the park and on the beach. The facilities are brilliant with the cleanest and best showers I have ever used on a campsite.

The fields are all level with good drainage and the booking in procedure was easy and the staff helpful.

Lovely little shop just off site and all in all a brilliant site.

Granted the cost is more than other sites but it is worth every penny.

We visited this site and took advantage of their stay 7 nights pay for six. This was our first visit to Fen farm but definitely won`t be the last.

From my Initial enquiry the staff were excellent friendly and helpful, on arrival the receptionist was really nice, and advised us if we wanted peace and quiet choose one of the fields away from the children's playground,

We chose Berry field and it was great, well kept and pick your own pitch, there are so many nice walks around, and the dog loved it, 2 mins and your on the beach,

The facilities won Loo of the year 2011, it didn't matter what time you went in they were spotless with radio two playing softly they were heated and lovely hot showers, only downside is that they are push button.

Visit here and you really need to visit the Dog & Pheasant just a short walk outside of the site. Excellent food and realistic prices.

The only downside to this site is the mobile signal is rubbish, you can purchase wi fi but this was expensive £7 aday.

Stayed here for a week at the beginning of July, The site is a mixture of Statics well segregated from the touring fields and 3 fields all grass for touring with lots of electric hook ups.

A very clean and one well appointed modern shower block serves the whole touring site, a Reception office but no shop but you can use the shop a very short walk away on the adjoining camp site.

I found the reception staff very friendly and help full after booking in we where invited to look around and choose our own pitch but to observe a 3 metre gap between units, the hook ups are 16 amp and there are stand pipes dotted around the area.

We arrived on the Sunday on a very quiet after noon and had the field we choose to ourselves the pitches are virtually flat so did not require levelling ramps and the field drained fairly quickly only showing signs of water logging on the day we left after 'torrential summer rain' No extra charge for Awnings or dogs.

The field nearest the shower block has a fenced off children's play area.

The Beach is a pleasant walk away through the camp site but is mostly shingle until the tide goes out.

The site only got busy on the Friday afternoon when loads of Hardy tenters arrived in droves.

We would visit this one again but do check tide times as the approach road to the Island can be covered by a high tide. I can see this site being crowded and noisy in the Holiday season

We enjoyed our stay here. Well-kept, flat fields with excellent facilities. The nearby beach is an estuary one with a mix of banks, sand, shingle and mud but nice enough all the same. Not much else nearby. There is a pub, Dog and Pheasant, through an opening in the hedge although I can't vouch for it as ours was a short stay.

You can walk into West Mersea along the coastline but you'd need to allow getting on for two hours to do it comfortably. There's no buses and a taxi is about £10. If you like seafood you must get to The Company Shed - a great experience.

I recommend Fen Farm but would have some concerns over staying there at peak periods. It was wonderfully quiet when we were there in midweek but is a large site and I fear that the facilities, while excellent, could be overrun at busier periods.

We stayed here previously in April 2010 (see my previous review), so we knew what to expect of Fen Farm.

Having previously been in our Campervan, this time we were in a tent and had two families of friends with us also in tents; we were not let down by the site and our friends were very happy. Granted, the weather helped, we had two scorching days and a great time wandering down to the beach; the bottom line with Fen Farm is that it’s a great site and reasonably priced.

There are four good size fields allocated to camp in, with EHU/water in most areas. There are a number of what appear to be semi-permanent plots for caravans but for the most part, you can park where you want provided that you stick to sensible distances.

Facilities wise, there is a children’s play area fenced off in the corner of one field. There is also a second play area down the beach path, near to the separate static caravan section of the site. The central toilet / shower block is excellent, very clean and well equipped. There is a small shop in the adjacent camp site which is a short walk through the hedge to and facilities on the Island further afield are more than sufficient, with a Tesco Local, a CoOp, a number of small local shops and a few good pubs and restaurants.

Mersea Island can be a bit windswept and the site certainly suffers from this on occasion and it is worth bearing this in mind if the weather is looking indifferent and you’re in a tent. As a destination for a weekend, Fen Farm is great; for a longer period, it’s quiet and could be quite bleak in some weathers.

Mersea Island is a few miles out of Colchester and whereas the Island itself offers limited shopping and opportunity to explore (unless you’re in a boat) Colchester is a town that offers a wealth of opportunity to explore historical sites, a good nightlife, cinema, a fantastic zoo and good range of shops. Further afield, the coastal towns up the coast from Clacton to Dovercourt offer a variety of different experiences for the summer.

Will we be returning to Fen Farm? I very much expect so and so will our friends!

Booking in was fine. Told we could pitch our tent on any field. We choose the one with the play park in it so we could keep an eye on our children. Nice flat site.

The weather was bad the weekend we stayed here - very windy and torrential rain. We didn't let this spoil our trip though.

Toilets and showers wonderful - liked Radio 2 playing in them. Washing up facilities were fine - only 2 sinks so on occasions there was a wait. No payment to freeze freezer blocks - just take them in and out of the freezer as you please.

The country park nearby is a great place to explore. West Mersea is a 10 minute drive away - Tesco, Boots and takeaways there.

The only thing we hated was the site was extremely noisy. The 'No noise after 11pm' rule was broken all over the place. Loud music till 12:30pm, drunken people arguing and shouting till the early hours etc. The Warden must have heard most of this as they were based nearby and presumably let it continue. Very disappointing. Apart from that a good site.
