We have been visiting fen farm for seven years every year. Very nice site very relaxed when you're there, very very clean shower blocks and toilets and plenty of them. Pub across the road is nice. Crabbing off the jetty in east mersea great fun for the family. Walk to the beach and have a BBQ is great whilst the sun goes down. Country park is just up the road and is great to take dogs for a walk and have a picnic and see the boats.

First trip camping as a family, we chose Fen Farm to meet up with two other families for what turned out to be a cold and wet bank holiday weekend (3 nights). Total 6 adults, 8 kids from 3-10.
Fast check in, we were told that we could go pretty much anywhere in a choice of 2 fields but one field had better drainage (things were quite wet) and this was pointed out to us by staff. Electric hook ups placed all around the outside of the fields with water points at each hookup so no walking for ages with heavy water containers. Mixture of caravans and tents.
Great play area for the kids, we just left them to it. Awesome shower / loo block - warm, clean and even had a radio playing. I could have sworn that the showers had underfloor heating but can't guarantee it.
Staff - thank you so much. One of our kids left their coat in the play area the day we came home. After contacting the site, they found the coat (now soaking wet), dried it out and sent it through the post back to us - couldn't ask for more.
Nearby pub (Dog & Pheasant I think), friendly local pub, seated and fed the 14 of us having just walked in off the street. Good food, nice ale and friendly barman.
Sea 5 mins walk away or 10 minute drive to West Mersea to the harbour. Spent a few quid in nearby chandlery and ended up on the jetty crabbing. Great fun for a few hours. We caught 53 crabs in that time. A visit to the lifeboat station (we ended up going on all three days). Again, friendly staff answering all the kid's questions and showing us around.
This camp site is in a great location - the causeway over to the island gets flooded at high tide. We were stuck for about half an hour trying to leave but that was our fault for not checking. The kids want to go back there and we would be more than happy to do so. I highly recommend Fen Farm. Thank you for a good start to our family camping.

Just spent 2 nights here just to find out if what everyone has told me is true, and it was its a fantastic campsite with everything you need right on your doorstep.
1. facilities, excellent the best showers/toilets and wash rooms I've seen.
2. fields great, soft ground, plenty of room, your not bothered by staff unless you ask for help, then they're helpful.
3. surrounding area, Mersea is a lovely place, clean and plenty to look at. lovely beach and plenty of shops for provisions.
Near the campsite is a lovely pub, we only had a drink but the food looked good.
We had good weather, so all in all were happy campers,
Will defo come back.

Our second visit to this great site. Lots of space so you never feel that you are on top of other campers. Lovely toilet and shower block which was spotless at all times even though the fields were quite soggy and muddy due to the non stop rain of recent weeks.
We had a nice welcome and the staff were really helpful when we realised we had forgotten to pack our gas cylinder. They were also helpful when we called the day before our trip to check the condition of the site following the flooding that the surrounding area had experienced.
Our kids love coming here because of the play park. They spent every spare second playing there and socialising with the other children. The fact that we could pitch our tent in the play park field meant the kids could enjoy a little freedom while we watched them from our tent.
The beach is great for beach combing and we enjoyed a good hour and a half exploring it one afternoon.
Only negative is the wifi service. We paid to use it but the reception was so poor that is was hopeless. We are hoping to get a refund from the wifi providers as it really was a waste of money.

Friendly reception on arrival. Liked that the fee was a flat rate per night, no extra for each child / electric etc. We were given the choice of which field we wanted to camp in and chose the one with the playground as we have a 10 year old, 7 year old and 1 year old.
We arrived on the afternoon of Easter Monday and the site was fairly quiet. There was very little road noise which is a big bonus as we often find campsites noisier than being at home!
Toilet and showers very clean. Liked the sun-tube lighting and solar panels. Radio in the loo block was entertaining - nice to hear what was happening in the outside world!
The showers I had did run a bit hot and cold but my husband had no such problem. Liked that we could just put our freezer blocks in the freezer whenever we wanted for no charge. There are only two indoor and one outdoor sink for washing up, so I think this may cause a problem at a busier time.
West Mersea is a busy little place with plenty of shops -eg: butcher, bakers, green grocer and a Tesco and Co-op.
Beach near the site sand and shingle with lots of shells. Walked along to Cudmore Grove country park which was very pleasant with toilet and ice cream facilities!
The shop on the neighbouring campsite was very close and useful to be able to use.
Only a 20 minute drive into Colchester for more shopping. Castle Park playground is massive with loads of play equipment.
Just the sort of relaxed campsite we like and will definitely return.

Stayed for a week at Fen Farm for October half term 2011. It was lovely and we will be going back this coming weekend.
We had stayed at another site which was much more commercial on Mersea island before, and are fairly local to Mersea so we know what to expect of the local area. Fen Farm was recommended to us as being a good place to relax AWAY from the arcades and kids clubs - and on reading reviews on here and visiting ourselves I can confirm it is totally true.
The site is well kept & the loo/shower block has won awards. Basically other than award-winning toilet block (and washing up station/ launderette etc) the site has very little in the way of facilities. THIS IS A PLUS as far as we are concerned as we can appreciate the area more by going off site!
Pitches are first come first served, no problem last time but have yet to see if we will struggle to get adjacent pitches for us & camping friends on a busier weekend- we last went at a really quiet time (despite the weather being glorious for October).
On site there is a playpark and a reception with a few buckets and spades for sale. Directly adjacent to the site is the shop belonging to the adjacent Static Caravan park (usual groceries & papers etc). Down the footpath is direct access to the beach. Less than a mile away is an extensive coastal Country park. At the far end of that is a foot ferry to Brightlingsea. All good ;)
Please note that the river Blackwater is tidal and low tide exposes vast stretches of mud - it's lots of fun, and there is also a facility to hose your kids/ dog down outside toilet block! Don't be expecting the golden sand you get at Clacton. Here you can watch the kite surfers, catch crabs, make mud pies, search for pearls in oysters etc. We found a starfish!
Everything else you need is on the Island - and considering it's only a few miles long it isn't exactly a problem - it's called supporting the local economy! It's what the locals do as occasionally you can't get off the island at high tide. (if that's set you in a panic read on - & there are Vets and Health centre on island!)
1) Groceries - largish Coop supermarket, Spar, & Tesco express in E Mersea village.
2)Veg - excellent farm shop on other side of causeway / Strood
3)Fish - Mersea Fresh Catch & other renowned fishmongers landing fish daily - including Mersea Oysters and the famous Company Shed where you can eat in taking your own wine!
4)Meat and Bread - traditional butcher and baker in E Mersea village
5) Wine & beer - well other than the lovely pubs especially the Victory, and the usual off-licence sales in supermarkets there is a VINEYARD and a BREWERY - what more can you ask?
6) Camping supplies eg Gas - large selection of camping accessories at shop on Waldegraves site.
I think I've sold you on Mersea Island and Fen Farm? If not then you'll be wanting the bright lights and amusement arcades - try Clacton.

Returned from a lovely 2 night break at this site. It is close to the sea so great for walks or water sports. WE had fun with my son beach combing. We arrived late so had to find our own space, reception had advised me on how to access the pitches. They are well sheltered and plenty of space as end of season.
There are two play areas for the children, equipment could do with a paint but the children do not mind.
There is plenty of space for them to play on and paths to cycle on.
Toilets are wonderful and worth their award. Large shower in both ladies and mens so if you have children you have space for them to dress and undress without getting clothes wet. There is also a family toilet and disabled facility card on request for a deposit.
Four Washing up areas are under cover and one outside. Always plenty of hot water.
You have use of the shop on the ajoining site which stocked food and drinks no camping equipment but the neighbouring site shop approx 5 minutes drive which you can also use stocks these items.
Staff on site were friendly and helpful. We will be returning to this site again next year.
Pub close by which does good food

Friendly Welcome and helpful staff
Really family friendly site, ball games played every day with lots of different families joining in.
Large pitches with plenty of space between them (we stayed at a time when they were fully booked!) I would suggest they could do with planting a few hedges and trees for better privacy.
Fantastic location just a stones throw from the beach. Great local shop just a short walk off site and also a lovely family pub just at the end of the road. A short bike ride away were plenty more shops, pubs and a fab fish and chip shop.
Showers and toilets clean and tidy, with radio 2 playing in the background which was quite amusing on the early morning toilet run :-)
Would definitely go back

A site susceptible to high winds as it's very close to the sea and is very flat. We booked for three nights and on arrival was told to drive around and find an EHU that was not taken.
We had plenty of space on our grass pitch. As far as I could tell there wern't any hard pitches available as the few that were on site appeared to have caravans that were permanently parked.
There were four fields to choose from, one containing a children's playground. There is a path that leads directly from the site to the nearby sea front that consisted of an oyster shell strewn beach. A walk along the beach led to a nature reserve.
The toilet/shower block has a sign saying it had won the best toilet block for 2011. I have an issue with this. The block was clean and warm with piped radio playing. It appeared to be ample for the site, but it was quite whilst we were there. My issues were that the lighting in the block was very poor. I don't think the main lights were on at all in the evening.
Also if you are a male requiring a wet shave, there are no mirrors by the sinks, only two for use with electric shavers. There were no private cubicles, not a problem for me but these issues make it hard to believe this is the best toilet block in the country.
There is a shop on site, but as our stay was short, we did not need to use. If you are looking for night life this is not the spot for you.
We visited some interesting places on the mainland including Historic Harwich and Maldon where Thames barges are moored. A visit to West Mersea around the moorings is very interesting with lots of house boats to see.

We visited here on backpacking trip round the island over the weekend. Toilets were immaculate and even had piped radio.
Loads of room for kids to play and nice and close to beach. Next door site has shop that you can use for milk, bread, icecreams etc.
The site is a few mins walk from The Dog and Pheasant pub which sells food. Very well presented site - all clean and tidy. It suited us as it is on the coastal path.
Did not see the owners as we arrived late and left early but left money in an envelope in reception box - thought rates were very reasonable.
Will definitely return with friends and bigger tent!
