Just returned from a weeks stay at this campsite and couldn't fault it. Staff are very relaxed, and this continues through the atmosphere of the whole site. We were told to pitch wherever we liked, and there were no departure time rules. Facilities (hook up, showers, toilets, washing machines, dryers) are clean, well maintained and plentiful. We (2 adults & 2 children, 5 and 7 yrs) enjoyed crabbing, the beaches in east and west mersea,a trip to brightlingsea on the foot ferry and meals at the Dog and Pheasant pub were great. We will definitely return!

We spent 5 nights at Fen Farm (tent, 2 adults and dog), and had a lovely relaxed holiday. There were a lot of people who use this site a lot and I can see why - the standard here is very high. Clean, well organised and maintained. Very child friendly too.
You need your own transport really to get around off the campsite - there is a van from the local village shop (about 1.5 miles away)and an ice cream van that visits regularly, and as we were leaving on the Saturday morning there was a market stall set up for toys/beach stuff etc. Colchester, Clacton, Frinton and Walton on the Naze are in easy reach by car and we had fantastic days out.
The Dog and Pheasant pub is about 5 minutes walk from the site and does food pretty much all day up to 8.45pm.
The beach at East Mersea is a couple of minutes walk away through the camp site and you can let your dog loose - what a bonus! Also the beach up the road at West Mersea(about 5 miles)was very dog friendly too. West Mersea also has a couple of indian restaurants/take aways as well as a fish and chip shop if you don't want to cook.
We will definitely be back - great site.

First time at Fen Farm after a recommendation from a friend and we weren't disappointed.
One of the great things here is that they let you pitch up where you want. When you want. We took our 6yr old out of school on the Friday and rocked up at the site about 10am. There was just us and another tent setting up. The other was pitching while kids still at school and were then collecting them after, a smart idea and one we might adopt next time here too. So a really nice and relaxed approach after the normal regimented affairs we seem to go to (all of which are run well). So we got a nice position not too far from the play area, which was excellent and fenced off with only the one entrance.
The owners were really helpful in sourcing the normal bricks for the off-ground disposable bbq.
Also really nice (as dog owners) was that we saw a couple of dogs off lead on site, little scottie and a collie, both of which behaved impeccably. Which is refreshing so long as the owners are responsible. I don't know if the site knew about this, but I didn't see anyone complaining and I hope this point doesn't put off non-dog owners alike, as they stayed at their own tents or walked around with the owners, no bad dogs.
The facilities were really good and clean, no issues there whatsoever, I could have happily stayed in the shower until all the water was gone. If that's solar heated water, it's pretty amazing, really warm not too hot.
Went crabbing for the first time ever (ashamed to admit that, gutted that my folks never took me as a kid) what great fun. In the absence of a fishing lake, a drive to the jetty at West Mersea is highly recommended. Helpful hint.Parking is really sparce, park on-street down Victory Road and a 5 minute walk is all it is. Go to The Company Shed just a little further along after the jetty, they will ask for only 20p for charity (go on, give them what change is in your pocket) and they will take out the last couple of fish heads from the counter bin to go crabbing with. We would literally chuck the bait in the water and pull up 5 crabs at a time, some quite sizeable ones too. (I'm told bacon is also an excellent bait).
All in all, we had a great time and it's only 1hr from us door to door so will be going back.
Okay, I know what you are thinking. What's the downside, all sites seem to have them (or we like to point them out). Well. The only minor pains for me, was that the ground was really tough to hammer the tent pegs into, and I use a club hammer not a rubber one, a couple of inches down would be all I got before trying a different spot. Also, the Chinese takeaway in west mersea, not too good, but all you have got and doesn't deliver either.
West Mersea has a co-op and Tesco Express, and a little gem of a kitchenware store opposite a leisure centre. Popped in for a knife and they hit me with the sucker punch of some delicious chocolates at the counter too.
There. That's it. Thanks for reading.

A nicely laid out campsite with very good showers and loos, a laundry room with free use of freezer for your ice blocks. For some reason, being in East Mersea I had expected it to be smaller and not quite so busy - clearly this side of the island is just as popular as the West! (and rightly so) A great location not far from the beach and good for cycling to West Mersea (around 5 miles, but all very flat) Pub nearby was okay, real ale lovers and gourmands might be a little disappointed but we were quite happy with what was on tap and on the menu.
Lots of electricity and water points. Only downside to this site is the price: £22 per tent, regardless of size or whether you want electricity or not. So for families this is probably good value, but not fantastic value if it's just one or two of you sharing a tent and no need for 'lekky. The site allows you to have off-ground BBQs but no campfires.

We camped at Fen Farm over a weekend (Friday to Monday) and it was busy being the holidays and a weekend.
This is a large well laid out site but it was noisy on the Friday with people screeching around in cars at 1am! The other two nights were far quieter.
We pitched on a field 'away' from the playground as advised by reception but its probably best to be further away than we were if you don't want to get woken up at 7am by lots of young children.
The site was reasonably clean although when we arrived we had to put a fair amount of rubbish into the bins as bin bags, broken chairs etc had been left sitting next to them, although this was probably children who couldn't reach to open these large bins! We didn't see the loos being mopped out at all by staff all the time we were there although the loo rolls and paper towels were kept stocked up well and you had to constantly swish the flies away when you were in the loos - yuck!
There are some really nice walks nearby and of course the beach (some sand, some shingle and lots of oyster shells)is a very short walk.
We had a trip to Brightlingsea on the foot ferry which was interesting and slightly wet!
A good, fun weekend and a site to be recommended. We will definitely come back but will probably try to do this in the week as it was a little cramped on site on the Saturday (ok during the holidays but difficult with children who are at school!). We had EHU and had no problems with this at all and in fact had more space as there are of course only 2 units to one hook-up. If you were non-electric it was tight on space!
This site was remote and would really benefit from having a small shop stocking some basic items.

Fen farm is one of those sites where you arrive, pay and pick your own space. I love this, no hassle from the owners but they're there if you need them.
First week of summer hols but not very busy. Our 4 kids aged 7,9,11,12 had a great time. Lots of room to run about, ride bikes and make friends. Its one of those sites where you feel safe to let your kids explore and hang out and know they are ok.
Short walk to the beautifully clean beach meant we had fun close by. When the tide was out it was too muddy to play but then we had fun crabbing! we got loads of little beautys :-)
Short walk along the road to a local shop which had all you need for backup. Nice little pub that we used to sit in the beer garden and a small farm that we visited to pick our own raspberrys.
Three sinks on site for washing up with very hot water. Shower outside for those muddy beach walks.
Now comes the biggest let down for me. I think I would use this site again but this was a big turn off for me. Outside the shower/toilets the constant smell of sewage was gross and the fly prob was just out of this world. A couple warned us about it when we arrived, they had candles burning to keep them away. We sometimes felt like we was in africa. They crawled on our bodies, all over our food, it was awful. The showers/toilet were swarmed by them too. There was no escape. I have never seen so many flies in my life.
This was the only bad point tho and I hate bringing it up cos it was a clean well maintained site. The poor cleaners worked 24 hrs to keep washing mud off the floors, something campers could do themselves I might add!

Just got back after 2 nights with electric hookup
Great site with large fields - great sense of space and privacy
Toilet/ shower facilities were fantastic - clean, warm, lots of hot water and Radio 2 playing!
Nice walk down to the beach and only a short drive to West Mersea and the shops etc
We had a lovely lunch of oysters and wine down at the harbour - a lovely treat
Would definitely recommend

Well we've just got back from Fenn Farm and what a great weekend was had by all, phoned them Thursday to see what time we could arrive on Friday and were told ' any time after 9am ' which was great, on arival I asked what time we would have to leave by and this time was told ' When you are ready to leave there is no hurry' well this was a nice change.
Now to the site itself it's very well kept and looked after there are three or four large fields to pitch on we were told to just find a space and pitch where we liked which was quite nice, all was level and there were plenty of hook up points with taps on them as well. Though I must say the EHU did trip a bit too much for my liking not enough to be a pain but perhaps 3 times during our weekend.
There were no charge for the two dogs or for the awning, lovely play area for our friend's kids and just a 5 min's gentle stroll to the beech. The loos/shower rooms were very clean every time I used them there was always hot water whenever I wanted some. The staff seemed nice and helpful I did not have much interaction with them but they seemed fine, very helpful when enquiring about a takeaway for Saturday evening.
All in all a very good clean site which I can't wait to visit again, maybe for 3 nights next time. Would highly recommend this site to anyone in the area.

Just back after a great weekend with the school mums and two children age 5 and 6. The site is clean, quiet and so much fun for the children they just didn't stop all day. Really was a lovely place to stay with nice people and the lovely walks to local places handy. You can even walk to the campsite nearby and pay to use their facilities which include pool and bar. Another nice walk along the seafront to Nature Reserve and foot ferry to Brightlingsea. Didn't do this but would do next time. Really would recommend this site for families with small children who are safe playing in the park all day long!

What a fantastic site! On arrival, the very helpful receptionist showed us on the cctv all the fields on the site and told us to take our pick. Having 3 children, we picked the one with the play equipment on. The pitches were not marked out, so you could pitch where you wanted, which was lovely. There was also vast amounts of space between pitches and loads of room for the children to kick a ball around.
A very relaxed site with superb facilities; the showers were always hot and extremely clean, as were the toilets, (clean that is!). The washing up area, was clean and well maintained too, the only criticism being that there were only 2 sinks inside and 1 outside, but, again, the hot water was constant.
No problems with noise at night at all, although the crows did make a bit of a racket at 4am!
The best thing about this site, was you paid one price, you didn't get charged more for children, the dog, 2 cars and the gazebo!
The pub was a short walk away, and although we didn't go there, we were told that the food was excellent. There was no on-site shop but the moblie shop from the local village store visited site for about an hour a day.
All in all, a fantastic site! Looking forward to our next trip there.
