Finally visited Fen Farm after so many people raving on about it and I was not disappointed.
The fields are large and you can pretty much pitch anywhere. The field we stayed in had electric hook up and water dotted around the field and also had a small park in one corner which was a winner for my kids.
The important bit - For me camping is just the best with 2 smallish kids but I have hang ups over showers and toilets so this is always an important point for us to consider when choosing a site. Fenn farm did not disappoint.
The shower block is fantastic. On cold evenings it was warm and clean and not once was there no toilet paper (and it was quite busy). The toilets were always clean and the showers were great with a small changing area included in each cubicle so was easy to take a child in as well.
The beach is a short walk away, although not sandy, very stony - never the less kids loved it.
Great place, great showers!

I picked this site off the UKCampsite.Co.Uk and booked accordingly. This site is very spacious, level and very very quiet. I stayed for 8 nights from the 22nd - 30th April and benefited from the sunshine which the county of Essex recently enjoyed.
Access to the site from Colchester was very clear, and I had no problem in my 29ft unit. The beach is less than five minutes walk away, and the site appears to be used by many local people, who visit at weekends and presumably holidays. If you are looking for plenty to do, then this is not the site for you, but if you are looking to de-stress, then yes it is wonderful at Fen Farm.
Being a tourer, I have visited many many sites, so can compare. All the reviews already listed here for 2010 are correct, so I will not go into describing the surrounding facilities, but I did purchase some oysters from the famous oyster farm at West Mersea. I have just two comments to make:-
1.The water in the showers is quite hot, and therefore, young children should be accompanied, and
2.Whilst at this time of the year the site was quiet, I am a believer, that all dogs should be kept on leads whilst on the site.
Notwithstanding my two constructive comments, I would if visiting the area again, have no hesitation in staying at this site. I wish them well in the future.

What a great site!
It's situated on the rural side of the island which is lovely and quiet. West Mersey has a little more going on which is where we had some oysters from the Company Shed, yum yum!
Only hindrance (which is no reflection on the campsite) what's with all the noisy campers?! Do they not have a clue?
The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The campsite was tidy and the toilet and shower bock was spotless

This is a lovely campsite with sea views (although quite far away) and very flat.
This is an easy to find site and the directions on this website are spot on. Please note that at high tide on and around the very high tides during the year, Mersea Island does get cut off, but this only lasts an hour or so.
Upon arrival we checked in and were met by two cheerful staff who took our cash and passed us a site map and site rules. The cost was £20 per night for a pitch whether you use the electric hookup or not. The number of people and size of unit did not affect the price. Hookups are rated to 10amp, so plenty enough for most appliances.
The site is located about a 10 minute walk to the sea. This is not a sandy beach in general, but shingle. It is dog friendly and exposed, so can get windy. If you walk along the beach to the left, after a couple of miles, you reach the foot ferry to Brightlingsea. If you walk to the right, you will pass about four other campsites, some with shops etc. But keep going, and it took us about two hours, and you get to West Mersea. We had fish and chips and an ice cream, but got a taxi back.
The site has a good clean toilet and shower block with plenty of each. The showers are push button (only last about 20 seconds per push) and you cannot change the direction of the shower head, or adjust the temperature, but they were just about right. Hairdryers available at a cost of 20p. They have the radio piped into the blocks.
Also in the block is the laundry and washing up area, this consisted of a couple of washing machines and a couple of tumble driers. I did not use them, so do not know the cost or how effective they are. There is also an iron and ironing board for guests use, again probably costs, but I did not use them
They also have an outdoor shower on this block for when you return from the beach. Plus disabled facilities which requires a key from reception.
The pitches are all flat and spacious and we had plenty of room for campervan and awning, bikes, tables, chairs etc. They do have some super pitches with waste and fresh water, but did not use these.
There is a pub called the Dog and Pheasant about a minute stroll from the edge of the site and they sell the everyday range of beer, lager, wines etc. They have a reasonably priced menu too and the food was served quickly and was very tasty. Worth a visit if you don't fancy cooking. Also very friendly staff and locals who made us feel very welcome and we returned a couple of times during our stay.
There is a small village store about half a mile up the road, that sold newspapers, basic necessities, bread, milk etc. But for larger stores, you have to travel to West Mersea where you will find a Co Op, Spar etc. This is about two miles away by road.
Locally there is a not a great deal unless you are happy on the seafront, but either a couple of miles away is the foot ferry to Brightlingsea, which is very pretty offering a wide range of shops, restaurants, chippy etc. If you were to drive it is abhout a 40 miles round trip.
Colchester is only 10 miles away and has all the larger shops, plus nice walks and the castle. Plenty to see and do in and around Colchester.
Overall a nice site, with good facilities and one I would consider returning to, if ever in the area again.

Just spent two nights here and the weather was as uncooperative as you'd expect over an Easter weekend, but we had fun!
Mersea Island is east of Colchester on the coast and is joined to the mainland by a causeway which at certain tides is impassable. The island has two main settlements, East Mersea and, rather coincidentally, West Mersea.
The main campsites are located at East Mersea and this one has four large fields set aside for camping and caravanning, as well as a separate area which has a large number of permanent statics. The entrance from the main road has a long drive before you get to any camping so you're well away from the very small amount of traffic, and I mean small, there's not much apart from campers as you're right near the edge of the island.
The island has a very good vineyard and brewery, a Tesco Local, a very good Co-Op, some good local stores (picked up a little portable heater for the awning without trouble) and within five minutes walk of this campsite, a good local pub - The Dog & Pheasant. There is also a local shop five mins up the road and they do a mobile shop call to the campsite every day for an hour so you can get essentials without leaving!
The fields all have quite a few hook up points, regular taps and small rubbish skips and are growing hedges around them to offer some wind protection and seclusion. There is a small children's play area with slide, climbing frame, swings and see saw and a nice footpath which is about five minutes slow stroll to the beach.
The main toilet and shower block is new, clean and well looked after, with about half a dozen showers and toilets in each sexes accommodation, the showers were piping hot and wonderful! There is also a laundry room and indoor and outdoor washing up facilities in this block.
The site is quite secluded and even though there are a fair few statics and conceivably, a lot of campers, it's relatively quiet, not too busy and is certainly well maintained - over two days over the bank holiday weekend the facilities were always clean!
There's lots more to do on the island and if seafood is your game, you're in for a treat; but there's lots more and far too much to include here.

What a great site!
It was fully booked the weekend we stayed but we had no trouble with noise at all.
Office staff were very friendly and the facilities clean. Plenty of showers a great washing up area with washing machine/tumble dryer if needed. I wouldn't stay too close to the park as I imagine it gets rather noisy.
We ate out at a seafood restaurant as recommended by the office - very nice.
Only thing I could say bad about our stay was the huge number of wasps. Tons.
We will definitely return one day.

Visited Fen Farm for first time August bank holiday with small group of two tourers and two small tents.
Good points: Well-laid out, clean & tidy, excellent facilities, loos/showers/washing up spotless, new-looking washing machines/ice pack freezer; short walk to beach and dog walks; no arrival/leaving times; lovely sea views.
Bad points: No night warden or noise patrol - a large group arrived on Friday with two gazebos and partied until 1.00 or 2.00am for THREE NIGHTS; no shop on site although village shop van comes round each day - a small shop with milk, paper ordering, ice cream, etc would be good; fairly exposed and windy site; ground rock hard so take suitable pegs; cess pit v. Smelly by Sunday and not emptied until Tuesday; shower water a little too hot on Sunday, which was a hot day (no controls, so watch kids); a bit pricey at £25/£22 per night, although we were allowed to fit two one-man tents in with our vans and split the cost.
Dog & Pheasant adequate for food/drink (waited long time for only meal we had there). Company Shed good for seafood but you need to put your name down early.
Group vote = possible return.

We arrived on this site after a family crisis and needed to get away for a few days. Lovely site, you tent where you want. The ground is hard and bent a few of our tent pegs. We only saw a bit of it, but it looked really clean tidy and the other tenters were incredibly friendly. Sadly after putting our tent up at 7pm, one of our tent poles snapped, so there was nothing left to do but go home.

3 Camp Sites in 7 days - 3rd review.
I can only agree with many other campers to Fen Farm.
Booked and paid by phone.Nice & easy.2 Adults 2 Children & dog, 3 days only (this time) at £66, no discount if hookup declined but dog was free.
Arrived 11am, pitched in 1 of the 3 fields available, lots of space to choose from.
Ground hard so had to go out to get some stronger pegs - no big deal.
Toilet/shower block very clean, spacious and lots of hot water.
We met some very nice people, as first timers(as a family camping)it was good to see how others kitted out their tents with tv's, fridges, lights etc etc.
Local pub was nice, 5 min walk, beach fine and local shops including takeaways at west Mersea good.
Look forward to going back to fen Farm.Soon.
