This is my 2nd review of the Red Shoot. Spent a very wet weekend here, it rained as we set up on the Friday and didn't stop raining until Saturday night!

Even with all that rain the site was still coping. Yes, it was a little squelchy underfoot in places but what site wouldn't be after rain of biblical proportions!

Toilet blocks are still clean and warm, shop is great and the staff are very friendly.

Location is superb and being right next to the Red Shoot pub is a bonus when the weather is that bad.

It does help if you've been before as if you book well enough in advance you can make sure you select a flat / sunny pitch (although most pitches are fine anyway).

It's a little expensive but we love the site and location! Booked to go back in August.

Lovely little oasis in the middle of nowhere. Smashing campsite, pretty, clean and friendly.

Showers could be a little warmer and the time lag could let it run a little longer but they're minor points.

Really close to local amenities but far enough away too.

Horses everywhere but not actually on the site

Love this site, we've been twice and will go again

You can BBQ and they provide bricks. Water points are plentiful and the whole site has a really nice feel to it.

Stayed here for a week, very busy at the weekend, fully booked but lovely atmosphere -children of all ages playing, no-one being a nuisance. Lovely little play area for children under8. Well stocked shop with papers and fresh baked bread every morning.

Very quiet and peaceful during the week.

Beautiful site right in the New Forest - donkeys and ponies in pub car park next door!

Lots of lovely walks/bike rides from the site, having never been to the New Forest before I would heartily recommend this site.

As a regular visitor to the Red Shoot campsite, we returned again in June 2012 and the site had been improved again.

With the staff as friendly as ever, the toilet/shower block has been updated again, there as now freshly baked croissants available in the morning and the shop continues to stock all you can want including the standard items such as bread, milk etc.

Though the weather was ok during our stay, it did rain very heavily on Saturday night, but the pitch drained extremely well and we had a very relaxing Sunday morning in the sun packing away our bits & pieces.

The site very family friendly and is extremely well run so there is no excessive noise later in the evenings making it great for children sleeping or adults enjoying a final night cap.

We will be returning again and would happily recommend the site to anyone. A great site in a great location.

This is the 2nd time we have visited Red Shoot. The site is in a lovely position in the forest with plenty of walks and bike rides close by. The on site shop was well stocked and I thought reasonably priced.

The toilets and showers we reasonably clean considering the amount of people using them. Never had to queue for a shower or the washing up area. The Red Shoot pub next door did good food at a reasonable price.

The only thing that I felt let the site down was how cramped it felt when we first arrived and the pitch we were give felt as though we were perched on the end of a row. But after the constant rain and gale force winds the site thinned out and we felt happier.

Happy to recommend and will be back again but maybe not at peak time.

Once you've found the site - our satnav wasn't that brilliant this time - you can relax: you will be in a peaceful rural site with any number of walking options available. The nearest is to the Red Shoots pub, only a bottle's throw away from the site. Don't worry about being close to the pub; the site is large enough for you to be well beyond earshot of any excessive sounds of merriment. The other walking options include large and beautiful tracts of the New Forest.

The facilities are comprehensive, first-class and kept in excellent condition. Information about local events and places of interest is available and bread or croissants can be ordered for the following day's breakfast.

It's easy to jib at the £20 a night charge (for a campervan + 2 adults), but this is fairly typical these days and the site is excellent in every respect.

Fantastic site, we love it here and keep returning. It does get expensive to pitch here during the main summer moths but in April, May and September its perfect

Friendly heck in staff with good checkin area and an on site shop which stocks all the basis at reasonable prices

Great facilities toilets / showers very clean and warm

Fab pub - cheap, tasty food, nice size portions and has its own micro brewery

Right on the doorstep to the New Forest with some fantastic walks and great for the dogs

Noise is kept to a minimum which is great

This may be a wonderful site during off-peak times, but our experience of the site during the Jubilee weekend was so bad that there's no way that we'll be trying to go back there again.

We liked:

* The pub - a good selection of beers, and good food. However, we went there to watch the Jubilee flotilla, and somebody spilt a pint all over the free view box, and the staff there were too scatty to be able to sort anything else out.

* the toilet block had underfloor heating - a *huge* plus on a cold and damp weekend that had us wearing every item of clothing we owned!

*the park - a good play area for the children - although as it was so close to the entrance, it was not really suitable for children to go wandering around on their own.

We didn't like:

*the cramped, on-top-of-each-other feeling we had. We were with friends in the sheep paddock (the sheep were in the corner). However, the paddock was also home to at least 10 other tents - and at a push there should have perhaps been 6 in there. We were told twice by wardens that they were full, and then more tents arrived!

* the showers - although the floors were heated, the investment should have been put in new showers: the water ran down the back wall of the shower, so you had to press yourself against the wall in order to get a shower. The worst showers I have ever experienced - and that was horrendous given the cold, wet nature of the weather!

* the constant rule sheets - they were on every door - it was like being at school (except that they weren't spelt correctly!)

* the seemingly hypocritical nature of the rules of the site: the rules clearly said (everywhere!) that there was to be no noise after 10pm (or it may have been 1030, I don't recall!), but on the Saturday night we had the out-of-tune warblings of a singer belting out of the pub until well past 11pm. The noise level ruling was completely ignored by most, with several large groups making a lot of noise until late most nights.

This may be a good campsite when it's not so busy, as its setting is superb, and the pub is lovely, but we won't be visiting again, as I felt that the sheep who had been penned in the corner of the sheep field had more room!

Stayed at the site for 2 nights on probably the hottest weekend of the year so far! The pitch was of a good size with electric very close. The toilets were always clean and well stocked, with hot water plentiful at all times of the day, nice showers although don't put anything within 6' of the floor that you don't want to get wet from yours or your neighbours shower under the dividing screens!

Washing up facilities well organised 4 separate sinks, with the added bonus of large draining rack on the wall, again there was plentiful hot water.

Children's play area was clean and well maintained but hidden from view from all the tents, with no shade and positioned right next to the main car/camp entrance. My children were very happy in it but probably not suitable for children above 8.

As mentioned in other reviews the 10:30pm noise curfew is very well observed, however the lights from the toilet block windows and those situated on top of each electric point mean the site is never truly dark, so I could clearly see in my tent at 3am but conversely didn't need a torch to walk to the toilet block! The pitches are arranged in rows with gravel drives in between so although this meant great access at times during the night it felt like we were camping next to a footpath.

The Red Shoot Pub which adjoins the campsite was good, the food was hearty fare, and the beer fantastic, but the server we got wasn't up to date on children's meal alternatives, plenty of space to sit outside with the dog and the attraction of seeing the New Forest wildlife right up close, eg 2 horses came to say hello during tea but kept at bay by the pub fence.

In summary this is a good site but one we will probably not use again due to the lack of area to play ball with the children and the need to have to go somewhere during the day to entertain the children as they are likely to be quickly bored if you remain on site.

This was my third visit to Red Shoot, and probably my last. It has become so down-market, while still keeping the higher New Forest pitch prices.

This weekend (Fri - Sun) the campsite was so busy, they had opened up extra fields to squeeze more people in, but there was no increase in the provision of facilities. The queues for toilets and showers and even the washing up were horrendous. I could tell lots of people were getting quite cross about this, but I never saw any staff trying to help out.

The shop closed because it had sold out of bread, water, ice cream, toilet roll - pretty much all the oft-replenished items. General things this site has done well in the past, such as litter picking, have also fallen victim to the higher number of people passing through. So well done to them on improving their business, but they should really be looking after their regulars until they have increased capacity available!

There were a few school D of E groups there, but the noise level at night, particularly the Saturday night, was low. I think the 10pm curfew is the best thing about this site.

It would have been nice to see some friendly staff trying to sort out the problems as they arose.
Management response: 1. At busy times we do open up extra fields. This is to enable us to give everyone more space and NOT to increase the numbers of units. Over the last 10 years we have reduced the number of pitches we have in our main camping area by 30 as a direct result of the increase in the size of tents. The opening of extra fields at peak times just enables us to accommodate the same number of units that we have always had.

2. At no time in the 40 years that I and my family have been running the Red Shoot Camping Park have we ever had to close the shop due to lack of stock. We did not run out of water, bread, ice creams or water at any time during May of this year. Inevitably, at busy times, stock may run low and the choice may be reduced but we certainly did not sell out of any of the staple goods that we offer.

3. I concede that there may have been queues for showers and washing up sinks at high demand times but this is a very common occurrence on many camping parks. We have more than the required number of showers, toilets and sinks for the number of pitches on our site.

4. With regard to litter. A litter round is carried out at least daily during quiet and busy periods, this has not changed.
