If you are a cyclist or backpacker, Bainbridge Ings has a reserved area at the top of one of their fields, which is vehicle free
Nice to get away from all those caravans, trailers, cars and oversized tents.
On a Friday night in July, when the rest of the site was turning away cars, caravans and motorhomes, the Tents-only section had only two tents. Almost like what camping should be.
Nearby Hawes has all the services you need, and although it has given itself over to tourists instead of farmers, and is still overrun with motorbikers, it is a very nice stop at the top of Wensleydale.

I agree with all previous comments regarding this site. Good location, camping fields beautifully maintained, very soft ground for pitching tent.
As site is on a slope and there was a lot of rain when we were there we did notice flooding towards the bottom of the field - could have sailed toy boats on the temporary lake.
The pitches are clearly marked out but are so narrow - by far the narrowest pitches we have ever stayed on - our tent (which is like a tunnel) could only go on the pitch lengthways and there wasn't even room to park our car between our pitch and the pitch next door.
Yes there is lots of room in the middle of the field but I think the owners could do with sacrificing a number of pitches to allow a little more privacy.
Toilets/showers were adequate, warnings about the hot system having difficulty in keeping up at peak times which I've never come across before. Also felt that the toilet/shower block could have done with some sort of covering on the concrete floor.

We stayed at this lovely site for the last week in July. We as a family of four, never had to queue for the facilities, and never had cold water in the showers.
It was very quiet and relaxing despite being almost full. No noise in the evenings apart from the sheep bleating, which is a gentle way to drop off to sleep.
A short walk across the field to Hawes, we had a couple of meals in the cafe next to the ropemakers, we suggest you try the delicious beef yorkshire puddings. The restaurant in the cheese factory is also excellent, we had a lunchtime meal and an evening meal there both very good.
The view we had from the campsite was second to none.

Stayed here for a few nights with a small tent, a motorbike and my son. It's a really nice place with excellent ground (soft and no stones) and it feels cosier than it looks in the photos.
In fact the ground is so good I probably didn't need to take sleeping mats and could have used the luggage space for other things. The cost is reasonable and the facilities are fairly basic but perfectly adequate.
Only 20p for a hot shower which is fine, there is plenty of time to shower. The owners keep the place looking nice and are very relaxed and accommodating.
It's a nice short stroll into Hawes where there are plenty of friendly pubs to eat in. At the end of the village there is a high quality chippy (try the eat-in side) and opposite that there is a cafe (open from 9am) which serves a full English breakfast that keeps you going until the evening.
It's a good location from which to access the Lake District and the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. It is certain that I will stay here again.

Just returned from a weekend here, and would definitely return and at 13. 50 a night is a good price.
Each pitch is around the outside of the field. Plenty of space for kids to play if you have children, which we don't. Our pitch was next to the road, but it is rarely used so noise was not a problem.
Each pitch is marked out with white posts so stops people taking up too much space and you can take your car up to your pitch so no carrying your stuff.
There was plenty of toilets which were always clean and plenty of loo roll. Showers 20p for 5mins and there was no problems with them being too busy even though the campsite was full the weekend we went.
Owners were very friendly and helpful, showed us to our pitch (last one available) they did say if they were full they would direct us to nearby sites as you can pre-book a pitch. They re-froze our icepacks for 10p which was very helpful.
Overall site was very clean and tidy, there was no noise after around 10pm, and the owners were always around if needed.
Would definitely return!

Just got back from 6 nights' stay here, should have been 7 nights but we will come to that later!
This site is beautifully positioned 10 minute or so's pleasant walk into Hawes, a small market town in Wensleydale. At this time of year Hawes is something of a honeypot for tourists so is very busy at weekends. The site itself was busy during our stay, with tent pitches full every night, and deservedly so.
We had every type of weather possible during our stay, and the position of the upper tent field means good views in good weather but you are fairly exposed to wind, we also had some heavy rain but the field appeared to drain well.
The owners were very friendly and helpful, and allowed us to choose our pitch from the three available on arrival. As mentioned elsewhere, pitches are on the narrow side but the layout allows for a large, well mown area in the middle for kids (and adults!) to play, which our 2 loved. In general there is a chilled out vibe, and on most nights the site fell quiet once dusk fell.
Washrooms, loos and showers were of the 'basic but clean' type, although there were queues for showers in the morning and I overheard complaints about lack of hot water.
There are signs up to advise that the hot water struggles at peak times and consider showering another time, which I tend to do anyway. This being the busiest time of year, I would imagine it isn't a problem the rest of the season.
Hawes itself has some interesting shops, and some good pubs, I can recommend the Crown for exceptional bar food.

Was a last minute thought to go away for the night about 5pm on the Saturday night.
Quick look on UKCampsite.co.uk and the top of the list was Bainbridge Ings, quick phone call and they had space but do not take bookings if it is one night however the pitch should still be there on arrival (and it was).
Lovely quiet campsite, in a beautiful area.
2 large tent fields with roomy pitches, only pitches around edge of fields would have been lots of room in the centre to play. Also another 2 fields with static and tourer caravans in.
There was 5 motor pitches on the edge of one of the fields, 3 hard standing with EHO and 2 without EHO on the edge of the grass but flat and mowed like a bowling green.
Hawes was 15 minute stroll away (map was given on checking in showing the route and local area).
As we arrived quite late and with 4 adults and a 4 year old unfortunately the pubs were out of bounds but the cafe in the centre was still open, just making the 9pm last orders, food was ok, think it had been sat there most of the day which wasn’t great but it filled a hole.
3 showers and 4 toilets in the male, basic but clean. 20p for a 5 minute shower, which made me rush a little (unnecessarily as it turned out as I had a fair bit of time left at the end)
There was a note about picking your time for a shower due to the hot water running out at peak times, I must have selected my time wisely as I had no issues, lovely hot shower.
Had an internal (with laundry) and external wash room but as we ate out didn’t use them
The surrounding area of the dales is always a place to visit with little villages and attractions to see.
If in the area wouldn’t have any issues returning to this site

We visited this site whilst walking the Herriot Way earlier this month. We got a very friendly welcome from the owners - although the site was full they always keep several pitches for backpackers.
We were directed to a field away from all the family groups which was nice. Pitch was lovely, 90% flat and ground that you didn't need a hammer for. We were able to book a pint of milk for collection in the morning from the reception.
On the whole the site seemed to be full of family groups and had a very chilled out and tolerant vibe. One toilet/shower block per gender and an additional toilet block per gender, basic but functional. 50p for the showers for 5 minutes, but mine lasted a lot longer (bohemian rhapsody x 1. 5 in fact).
Hawes is a 5 minute stroll away and a good base, we were only passing through but found it useful for stocking up - a couple of outdoor shops, a chemist, couple of nice looking bakery's for lunches the next day. Would certainly return with the car or on foot again.
Good points: good pitches, marked out to avoid overcrowding, great location for walking
Bad points: Basic but functional facilities, wouldn't be overly 'non family group friendly'.

Lovely quiet campsite, in a beautiful area. Set in the the grassy hills with plenty of sheep and lambs surrounding the site.
Hawes is just a short 10-15 minute stroll away. Has 3 pubs, chippy, spar and plenty of little shops. Stayed in 1 of the pubs till 01.30 with all the locals. Beautiful waterfall in the centre of the town.
2 large tent fields with plenty of room in between each tent, only pitches around edge of fields so plenty of room to walk around tents. Also another 2 fields with static and tourer caravans in.
Showers and toilets basic but clean at all times, 20p for showers and hairdryers.
Would definitely go again.

We stayed here over Easter in our motorhome. Hard-standing pitches were gravel, but most were on grass. The site is sloping, so chocks may be needed.
The showers are toilets aren't spotless but definitely usable (showers are 20p). They have fresh water and chemical disposal points on-site. The weather was great when we were there and we sat outside a lot.
It was quiet and the views of the Dales are amazing! Staff were helpful and at reception they have plenty of leaflets about attractions in the area, and WiFi is free, you just have to ask.
The quaint village of Hawes is only a short walk away where there's shops, restaurants, tea rooms, etc. And many scenic walks.
This is definitely the best campsite for visiting Hawes and the Yorkshire Dales.
