We visited this site for the first time for 5 days as we were told you had to book for 5 to get electric over the bank holiday. There were others who didn't stay for five though so not sure if this was correct or if they decided to leave early.
We were pitched with EHU on the higher/top field overlooking the smaller childs park. It was a nice spot with a large pitching area. Our kids loved to go down to the park and enjoyed the play field too. The park was quite noisy until after 10pm each night we stayed and it didn't get chained up as mentioned previously. It didn't spoil it for us (our kids were already in bed) but if you were very close to it and had a young baby its worth considering.
The staff were friendly and the shop proved very useful for the odd treat or essentials and the opening hours seemed long.
The shower block was clean most times we used it and the only problem was one busy day but this was from other inconsiderate campers who didn't mop the showers after use or those who let the kids go to the toilets alone.
The last night we stayed we had gale force winds which was quite scary on the top area as its quite exposed. Some peoples tents didn't seem to cope too well.
Overall, although a little expensive (as they charge extra for people, extensions etc) I feel it's worth it as its so large, has good sized pitches, interesting layout and great for the kids. The two parks are excellent. It is a little secluded but helmsley is quite close but you'd be quite happy staying on site if you need to
We will definitely return but probably not on the higher field.

This place is great. Everything about it: location, facilities, people etc. Get booked in early as it gets busy. However, as people have said, it never seems full because it is so spacious.
The food in helmsley is great, lots of local produce to try. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and we went horse riding at Bilsdale, which was very well organised and value for money.
Just go, it is great!

We have just got back from a weeks stay here and thoroughly enjoyed it. The showers/toilets were spotless, there is even a family bathroom which is handy for smaller kids.
We were right by the big park which was great for us having 3 kids. The shop is handy and well stocked with fresh bread etc. The staff were friendly and helpful.
The site is a bit in the middle of nowhere, however we didn't find that a problem. We would def go back.

This campsite is a joy to visit!
On arrival you have to check in at reception which can get a little busy as it also is the campsite shop but once called forward you are soon on your way to set up camp. We were pitched on the rally field at our request, we love it up there. The only slight issue with it is that it is a little walk to the truly excellent toilet / shower block.
Our daughter (10) was off to the park and only ever returned to be fed.
The site is fairly well sheltered and offers ehu for those that want it.
There is so much to do in the area, castle howard, the lovely town of helmsly as well as flamingo land and eden camp.
We will definitely be returning.

My husband has been camping many times in the past but this was my first time, however we had a great weekend at the Golden Square.
Its a very nice site, the toilet block seems a little dated but clean and well maintained and I never saw any queues for the showers or toilets, even at busy times.
The washing up facilities are good too. There are 4 stations and there was a small wait time at busy period e.G. After breakfast time but they quickly went down. The only complaint would be about the lack of consideration from other campers who think nothing of leaving the remains of their meals in the sinks, but that is nothing to do with the site itself.
There was an excellent play area for the children which was always busy and full of fun, and there was also a crazy golf course. The site has also a well stocked little shop that seemed very popular.
Helmsley village is about 4 miles away and is a gorgeous little place. We can strongly recommend Makins for fantastic fish & chips. There a lots of quirky little shops and some great quality deli's, bakeries and butchers to stock up on some extra treats.
One thing I would say though is be careful if you're fancying a drink in Helmsley becuase its not easy to get back to the site! There are only 3 buses per day, and taxis are very scarce but if you're up for the walk back (with the last mile uphill!) its worth a look.
The only real negative points to mention about the site is hard ground/rock pegs in order to set up with any ease and avoiding wrecking your standard pegs. With the great kids facilities its very popular with families and therefore a little noisy, but that to be expected and it tends to quieten down by about 9pm. However, we had some 'noisy neighbours' who thought nothing of playing music and shouting at midnight, but that's just bad luck.
Overall, its a good site and we will be back.

They charge extra for children, be warned when you arrive the tariff does not incl your children supplement per night, also for another car which you cannot bring onto site charged extra.
Try getting your tent pegs into the hard core 1inch below grass, Short rant over.
The children did enjoy it though, and the other customers on site very pleasant, its too far out of town to walk so you have to drive, quite exposed so last weekend very windy on top of a hill. The playground is well equipped.

Just back from a weekend at the site. Weather was changeable along with rain. We were recommended to this site and were not disappointed. We arrived at 11.30 but even though told that 1pm is the earliest to check in, we were allowed straight away.
We pitched in the Rally field outside the gates. Great pitches. The shop was well stocked though surprised that they closed I think around 7pm on Saturday as thought they would get good business up to 9. The actual site was on different levels and made it very picturesque.
Couldn't fault the shower blocks. Only three miles to Helmsley and the site was actually in the middle of nowhere.
Great site and will be going back.
Well done.

Stayed here on a friday and saturday night, and I have to say I enjoyed every second of it, because we hardly saw the kids, they were happily trying to kill each other in the parks while we were left in peace. Booking in was a breeze, and although there were quite a few people there that weekend, because the site is built on a few different levels, you don't feel penned in in the ' pile 'em in' way.
The showers although a little dark were spotlessly clean, but one area of improvement is the games room ( which seems a bit of an afterthought) but on the whole, a very enjoyable time. This site appears more suited to families, rather than couples after a quiet weekend, due to the amount of kids. But it soon went quiet after dark, and a good nights sleep was had by all.

We chose Golden Square to visit for our first trip out in our motorhome as it wasn't too far away, got good reviews having lots of facilities and good play parks for our 20 month old.
Upon arrival around 7pm on the Friday we were given the choice of pitch either right next to the main reception which would be noisy or a quieter pitch out of the way. We chose the quieter pitch even though it involved reversing the motorhome up a gravel track between parked cars and vans with everyone watching.
The site was very busy and had great facilities that were always kept clean, plenty of hot water in showers. Staff were polite and cheerful, thought they might made sure we were ok with it being our first ever trip out however it is a large site and they were very busy.
Site is situated a few miles out of Helmsley and we didn't dare move the motorhome from its pitch due to its awkward location so we had to make the most of the site's facilities which our daughter thoroughly enjoyed.
We left the site on Sunday, drove up to the barrier expecting it to lift however it didn't so had to run back to the reception to get out, seems like a rather strange system, surely the barrier should lift when trying to exit and just block people trying to get in. I'm sure there's probably a perfectly good reason for having it work how it does, everyone else seemed to manage so must just be me!
Probably wouldn't stay here again due to its location and having a motorhome - need a site that is within walking distance of a town or some pubs!
By the way our pitch was 30A so avoid it if you can unless you're camping and just have a car to park!

This is a great site well laid out and always clean, plenty of places to walk the dog and you always feel that your kids are safe. Helmsley is only a 5 min car drive and is a lovely place with plenty of shops and a nice chippy. Our 3 boys love it here but I am afraid we will not be returning due to the attitude of the owners who were very abrupt and short with us. Such a shame.
